Safari getting slow, pokey and buggy?
Ok,
Is it just me or is poor Safari slowly becoming the ugly step sister in the Apple product family?
It started life with much pomp and attention, but as Microsoft has stopped Explorer for mac (crappy product anyway..) Apple has also seemed to stop focusing on this product.
I find the last few versions to be very slow.. almost like they are stuck in mud when downloading pages for the first time. The Loading update keeps showing but nothing really loads. Often it is simply a matter of stopping the load and doing it all over again.
I just find this strange and wish Apple would focus a little less on the "featuremania" of Safari and perhaps just a little more on making it the smoking fast and reliable browser it once was.
Greetings,
Which version of Safari are you speaking of? Your problems are not the fault of Safari, but rather problems on your system that have not been addressed. Lots of things can affect the speed of Safari, including whether or not you have any Input Managers, corrupt files, etc. So, did you use disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities) to Repair Permissions before and after you installed Safari? If not, do it now.
Next, Quit Safari if it's running and open System Preferences>Network.
In the DNS Server tab, make sure IPv6 is turned off, and enter these two DNS servers to replace the ones you currently have:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
click Apply Now and quit System Preferences.
Next, do these things in order:
1. Go to Home/Library/Cookies and delete the Cookies.plist file.
2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
3. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Web Page Previews and delete the contents of that folder.
4. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
5. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
6. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete these files (if you have them):
Downloads.plist
History.plist
Form Values
LastSession.plist
WebpageIcons.db
Then restart Safari and see if the speed is improved.

Safari getting slower and slower
Memory use looks normal, history is clear, Line speed check shows normal, have re-installed and yet it continues running slower than IE.
May be a Win7 thing...not sure but also not useable due to this.Is it still slowing down for you, groingo?
Does it make a difference if you have plug-ins disabled or not? I get the weirdest slow-down effects if I have plug-ins disabled, and, for example, try to do a print preview. The Performance tab and the CPU readings in the Processes tab in Task Manager seem to suggest Safari is simultaneously maxing out and trying to use just a single processor (my Lenovo has two) under those circumstances. Print preview is blazingly fast, with no excessive CPU use, if Plug-ins are enabled. -
Safari is slow, crashes and asks for certificates
Safari is running very slow. The first page opens normally then every page after that it runs very slow and crashes some of the time. I am also getting a lot of notices for "unauthorised" cites and am being asking to verify certificates. These notices are for common pages like google and gmail.
I am also posting my post recent crash log.
Any advise would be very helpful.
Thank you.

Click: Update
If there's an update available, go ahead and install then restart your Mac and try Safari.
You need to empty the Safari cache also. Launch Safari. Hopefully it won't crash before you can do this.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari / Empty Cache.
Or... Option + Command + E on your keyboard.
Regarding certificates. Back to System Preferences / Date & Time then select the Date & Time tab.
Make sure: Set date and time automatically is selected.
Certificates won't be accepted without the correct date. -
Hi all, once again I'm driven to post about dreadful Broadband speed.... a few years ago it was the dizzy heights of 227 KB/s, then a long period at around 120, then down to 75, 50 for a while, and now tonight's speedtest is 36 KB/s.
I lodged a fault complaint in March, and after the usual round of 'reset your router... is the light steady blue... can you plug it in to the master socket' which I always get the gentleman at the other end assured me that he would run a few tests then call me back. Two months on I'm still waiting, and the speed has now dropped even further.
I did get a fairly nasty message from a mod after my last post complaining about the speed, so stayed away from the forum for a while, but it's really desperation that has made me come back again. I just go away from my PC, often for days on end, as the speed makes any kind of activity impossible, and no-one wants to know. no-one wants to help, I just get fobbed off with the same instructions of 'reset your router'.. 'is the light steady blue'.... I built my own PC and to be honest if I could cure the fault I'd have it done by now. Even the new Home Hub 4 has only slowed things even further.
I'm driven to complaining out of desperation, I'd rather just hope things will get better and not annoy anyone, as it always seems to be my fault for being stupid and having to bother a poor engineer into coming out to my house, but if I knew anyone I'd pay them myself and get the whole thing sorted.
Can anyone please give me any advice on who to talk to or what to do, I'm nearly driven to tears of sheer frustration of blank white webpages, disconnected downloads and hours of bufferings or lost connections. I've put up with it for months but I can't see what else I can do other than appeal for help and risk being accused of being a serial complainer... again...
Struggling with less than 50 KB/s… a quarter of what it used to be.Hi Welcome to the community forums

I am using iMovie 10.0.4 and cannot get fast-forward or slow-motion functions to work. I have organized my clips into a Project and attempting to edit them in the Timeline. With the target clip selected in Timeline, I am unable to access the fast-forward or slow motion functions in the menu bar nor by right-clicking to select the Speed Editor. Example screenshot below. Thanks for any help you can throw my way.
Hi,
I have this problem too.
Do you have the issue only on new projects ?
Do you still have an old project where you used slow motion ? if so, just duplicate the project and cleanup all clips from the new project and you have a clean empty project with working speed controls. It works for me.
Let me know.
I've created my own question about it because I didn't see yours at first.

hi,
I am using macbook air. When ever i work on safari and try to open a webpage it takes too long to open a page. Many a times blue bar stops and start again. I have to keep refreshing it many times.
When the web page opens then even youtube works properly and I can listen online songs without interruption. (This is just to tell you that internet speed is fine).
I am using WIFI.
Please help me if something is wrong in safari or elsewhere. At times its highly irritating.Hi dev1987,
Welcome to the Support Communities! The resources below will provide some basic troubleshooting steps for your issue. Hopefully one of these will help.
Wi-Fi: How to troubleshoot Wi-Fi connectivity
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4628
iCloud: Troubleshooting web browser issues with iCloud.com - Apple Support

Troubleshooting the cache
Most web browsers use a feature called "caching" to display frequently used information, images, and web resources. Caching stores or "caches" this information on your computer, so your computer doesn't have to download the same information every time it visits the same webpage. Caching makes subsequent visits to the same website or webpage faster.
To clear Safari's cache on a Mac (Safari 6.0 and later)
Close any open Safari windows.
Choose Safari > Preferences > Advanced.
Select the checkbox labeled "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Close the Advanced window.
From the Safari menu bar, choose Develop > Empty Caches.
Safari 5.0.1 or later: Slow or partial webpage loading, or webpage cannot be found - Apple Support
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203387
When loading webpages in Safari 5.0.1 or later, you might experience the following:
Slow performance
Partially-loaded pages
Webpage "cannot be found" message
Your DNS server(s) or your router might be affected by DNS prefetching in Safari 5.0.1 or later.First, try a different DNS service
Try a different DNS service, such as one of the DNS services below. This will test to see if the root cause of your issue lies with your selected DNS servers.
OpenDNS (http://www.opendns.com/)
Google DNS (http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/)
Or, search the Internet for "Third-party DNS services" for more options and information
For information about how to change DNS settings in Mac OS X, see Editing DNS and search domain settings.
If the issue persists in Safari, return to your original DNS server settings if desired, then continue with the next section.
If the issue persists, disable DNS prefetching
Choose your operating system below to learn how to disable DNS prefetching.Mac OS X steps to disable DNS prefetching
Open Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities).
Execute the Terminal command below to disable DNS prefetching:defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
Quit Safari, then open it again and test for the issue.
I hope this information helps ....

Late 2011 MBP i7 gets slow with and after Aperture
My first post, please pardon my ignorance. I have read similar threads but I believe my situation is a bit different.
Anyway, my late 2011 MBP i7 4GB ram, running on SL gets very slow after I open/browse/edit in Aperture. The system does page out to 1.3 gb. When using Safary and email, it becomes very painfull even after I close out the Aperture. The whole system becomes laggy and menus become delayed. The only solution is to reboot and my mac is back like new until I open the Aperture again. Every program is up to date and only about 160gb out of 500gb HDD being used.
Heres what I've done so far:
1. long hardware test checked ok
2. NVRAM reset
3. downloaded Kasperski and found no viruses
4. rebuild/repair aperture database
5. ordered 8gb crucial ram, should be in in a few days
Is it due to not having enough RAM? My previous 2006 MBP Core 2 Due was almost as fast running on Lion and 4GB ram. I would expect a significant speed increase on my 4 core i7, but unfortunately it's not the case.Paging out to 1.3 gig effectively means that a lot of stuff is sitting in virtual memory on your hard disk. The i7 is great for improving the speed of whatever is in memory, but anything that is paged out is limited to the performance of the HDD and SATA bus.
The cheapest and most effective first step is to max out your RAM. It's a modest investment that will benefit you immensely. The second step is to replace mechanical disks with SSDs. Currently, this is a pricy proposition, but the performance improvement can be nearly 100% over a mechanical drive system.
At the end of the day, it's about how much money you want to spend to go as fast as you can afford. -
Safari starts getting slower and slower loading pages
Hi, i have always been a pc person, but recently made the switch to mac. i love it, but have an issue with safari. My internet speed is 17mbps so thats ok. Now after a few weeks of browsing the safari gets slow at loading pages, i have deleted history and emptied the cache. I had spoken with support during the 90 days free support. Now that has expired. They told me to get to the "verify permissions" then do "repair permissions" as there are a lot of error messages that are brought up. Once i have done this the internet is fine again - but obviously somethig is a miss as it starts slowing down over the weeks. Would upgrading to the latest version of snow leopard sort this? any ideas of other reasons. any help much appreciated
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl. If you are running Snow Leopard, run Safari in 32 bit not 64 bit.)
Do you have enough RAM? Less than 1GB can cause slowness. Is your hard drive too full? Less than 15%, or 15GB, of free space can also cause slowness.
Adding DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
(An explanation of why using Open DNS is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Wikipedia also has an interesting article about Open DNS:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
form values
download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

What is wrong with safari 5.0.6 and 10.5.8 - SLOW!!!
Hi guys
First post and that is because I have not had a problem with my Macbook Pro in 2 years since getting it.
I have been reading here and there but my safari 5.0.6 is getting sluggish. It take longer for webpages to load up and any kind of video content such as YouTube etc is jerking. It doesn't load as quick and stops and starts every 8 secs or so.
Facebook takes longer to load and even basic sites like BBC.
I have tried the whole reset safari and cleared the cache plus changing DNS etc.
Also created a new id and still just as slow.
I am coming to the conclusion that there is something wrong at the Apple HQ and they need to release some patches to get things working again!
Any comments or ideas welcome.
Cheers! If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here: http://www.opendns.com/home/nobloat ) and further independent information can be read here:

If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The latest versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:

Why is Safari becoming slow and unresponsive?
Ok - I have exactly the same problem. I can run safari and use it. After a short while it becomes slow and unresponsive. When I quit I get the rainbow ball of death and the only way I can stop the application is to force quit.
It is definitely linked to a particular network account as the guest account check above shows that it runs fine on another account.
As I watch system memory in actvity monitor while I use safari the fhe following occurs:
1. free memory gets gradually used up to about 50%
2. Inactive memory gradually builds to about 50% of total
3. Then page in and page outs build massively and the swap file goes into overdrive
I have 32GB memory on board but even so it doesn't take long for Safari to gobble it up.
At the same time CPU % shows 90-100% and Real Mem sits around 15-18GB.
By this stage the whole machine is slow and unresponsive as safari ***** up all its processor and memory resources.
I have taken the following action:
1. reset safari using the reset process built into the app - no difference
2. deleted the preferences file - no difference
3. deleted the Library/cache file - no difference
Thought about resetting NVRAM but decided that it wouldn't make much difference because it seems to be linked to a user.
Any thoughts/suggestions on other actions I can take would be welcome.
Are there other cache or preference files that I should be trashing. Can I delete and reinstall safari? I don't really want to have to go through the process of establishing a new user and rebuilding a reasonably substantial docs and photo library and set up.
Help.

Safari gets stuck loading pages and cycles indefinitely
I am new to Macs. I am using Safari to trade stocks and many of the pages I use must be refreshed every few minutes. These pages are located in etrade.com, ameritrade.com, google finance and yahoo finance. At any single point, I may have up to ten or so tabs open in my window and refresh each as I need. However, Safari will have a tough time refreshing the pages most of the time and will get through about half of one, then get stuck and start cycling indefinitely. At that point, I need to stop loading, reload/refresh the page a couple more times, each time Safari getting further along and getting stuck again, until the page properly refreshes completely. I understand that I am using a lot of pages at once. But that should be no problem and should have no affect on the browser and other pages. I have a 2.93 GHz processor, 4 GB RAM, and 256 GB SSD hard drive. The computer has no software on it so far. No music, nothing so far. I've never had this problem with Mozilla or Explorer on PCs. Even this Apple page had to be reloaded, now that the problem has spread to all pages I browse online. I have no other problems with the notebook. Does anyone know what's going on with my browser and do I need a software update or need to get the computer flushed and everything reinstalled? Thanks for any help.

IMac early 2008 getting slow. EtreCheck summary in french
Hello all,
I have tgis problem with my iMac for a while (I guess since I switched to OS X 10.9).
Some applications are getting slow opening and closing (Mail, Calendar, AddressBook, iPhoto, ...)
For example, active windows of Mail won't close immediately when I click onto the red button. I need to do it many times, switch to another app and back to Mail, and then try again. It is an erratic process. And this happens with other apps.
Rather frustrating.
Here under is the description of my problem in french (pretty much the same as I wrote here in english) and the picture of my iMac by Etrcheck.
If anyone can help, that would be great.
Thank you for your attention.
Description du problème :
Depuis assez longtemps maintenant, mon iMac ralentit.

From comparaison with previous check, it appears i recovered Hard Drive memory: from 58.53 to 107.86 Go.
I don't see the Safari item anymore. Nor the Bit Torrent stuff.
Mail seems to be more efficient. But when OS X reinstalled, Mail opened at first with re-load of all mails; i saw 23 569 mails total reloaded from SENT, to DRAFT, RECEIVED, etc ... for the last 10 years. Some of the mails have files included. Could be the problem for Mail being so slow. Even now when I open Mail it takes time to order properly all emails by date (and this is only for the INBOX display)
I don't know for the RAM. Kind of expensive and the result might not be as expected.
I still can't take screenshot with the keyboard shortcuts... something went wrong i don't know what. If someone has a clue I could then send shots of some of my windows to make sure I have things right.

I use Safari 5.06 and have a 60/60 Mbps line. When I start Safari I usually get my full 60/60 speed, but if I open three or four more windows, everything slows down to half speed or worse. Why? (I do understand that secure lines SSL etc. pages with much content like video etc, will take more bandwith but this is not an issue here)
All help and suggestions is greatly appreciated!
KimsterIf Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file: Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db and also clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers: 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220 (You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
The latest versions of Flash 10.1 and later appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.

Safari 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 problem
Safari 4.1.1 stops loading some pages with only one item to go, and only on some websites. I recently updated to Safari 4.1.2 and it is worse. I am using airport extreme 7.4.2 wireless to access the internet.
The pages that stop loading, always stop with one item to go. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If Safari is getting very slow:

Safari do not open and ends up not responding
Hi,
Safari no longer works for me after a software update. Safari will not open and ends up not responding upon launch at which time I have to force quit.
I have gone through the Mac help forums without finding a suitable answer and I tried the following actions but unfortunately not one is working.
-I have tried to uninstall and install safari again (to uninstall the program I have deleted also all the cookies in preferences and library and application support);
-I have created a new user and safari does not work for the new user either.
It seems to me that the mac feels that a safari window is open but I cannot see it.
Any suggestions would be very appreciated.A few things you can try (I see you have tried some of them already):
If your Safari won't open, one or more of the following procedures should fix it:
1. Go to Home/Library/Safari/ folder and remove the following two files:
¥ history.plist
¥ lastsession.plist
(Safari may not load properly If these two files are corrupted.)
2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/ and remove the contents of that folder.
(These are just webhistory files and are not required for Safari to run. However, similar to preference files, problems can arise if they have become corrupt.)
3. Locate the cookies.plist file that's located in the Home/Library/Cookies/ folder and remove it.
(Again, faults in stored cookies may interfere with Safari's launch.)
4. Check whether any of your third-party internet plug-ins may be interfering with the launch of Safari by carefully moving them to the desktop (do NOT delete them at this stage). You can find these in two places:
Home/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ folder, and Global plug-ins are located in the Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/ folder.
Also look in Library/Input Managers where other third party add-ons may lurk. If you find a SIMBL folder, please note that some SIMBLE.bundles may require updating or possibly removal.
Restart Safari and place them back in the correct folders, one at a time, closing and re-opening Safari each time. If you discover that one of them was causing the problem with launching Safari, trash it and download and install a fresh copy.
