Safari...gone!!!   10.411 G5 Power Mac

Don't ask me how this happen, but Safari is gone, 10-23-08. I also lost my Mac.mail account. Well sort of. I have the window open with all my folders intact ,now it asks for a password and when I type it in it rejects it. It won't allow me to create a new mac.mail account.
1. Try to downlaod Safari from Apple site, and it would not download. It quits during installation.
2. Inserted disc #1 that came with the computer and it will not download. It quits during installation.
NOTE: No windows of explanation appear, they just plain quit.
All other applications and software on my computer works just fine.
I'm a NOVICE unlike you the expert.
Frustrated...
Jomo

Do you have a backup of your entire system from before this happened? If not, then you need to get a backup system and back up everything daily to avoid these types of situations.
The first thing you should try is Repair Permissions. If that doesn't resolve anything, then take note:
You cannot download Safari from the Apple web site; it makes no difference what you think it says on that web page; you cannot do it, so don't waste your time trying. If you want to reinstall Safari, you must do all these steps, in order:
1. Repair Permissions.
2. Insert your Mac OS X install/restore disc, navigate to the Optional Installs folder, then open the Optional Installs.mpkg file.
3. Check the box to install Safari only and run the installer.
4. Download and install the 10.4.11 Combo Update. This will get you Safari 3.1.2.
5. Repair Permissions.
If Mail doesn't accept your password, then your Keychain may be corrupted. Open Keychain Access and go to Keychain Access > Keychain First Aid and see if repairing it will let you access Mail. If not, then you'll need to go back to Keychain Access > Passwords and delete your password for that Mail account, then re-enter it when you try to access Mail and tell Mail to save it in the Keychain.

  • Safari Download not working on Power Mac G5

I am running 10.3.9 system software with 512MB ram. It is the model with all the hardware in the monitor (19" I think) , it has no tower.
I cannot install the new snow leopard system software or updates to several software programs including safari.
My questions are, is it time to just buy a new Mac Book for 999.00 or are there cheaper upgrades that can be done (More Ram) and keep the existing model.
I currently have the new macbook pro and love it, but the other MAC is for family use?

    Hi Dave,
Time to buy a new Mac for family use. You can't upgrade on the old model to Snow Leopard because it requires an Intel Mac.

  • Power Mac G4 hard drive a goner?

    Hello,
My Power Mac G4 "died" last Sunday. Initially, the it wouldn't start up at all. So, after reading some suggestions on the net (I have a Mac Book pro), I changed the battery.
It booted but the question mark folder came on. I couldn't even open the CD tray. Further reading had me use the command-option-F-O during start up and I finally got the install CD in.
I booted via the CD but when I went to utilities, my hard drive was nowhere to be found! It just showed the DVD drive and a USB flash drive that I had.
I called the local Mac service shop and he said that it would take from $50-1000 to diagnose and perhaps fix the problem.
Can I salvage my hard disk? Or is it a goner?
    Thanks guys.

To start with, anyone who would give you such a ridiculous ballpark figure of $50-$1,000 to diagnose/repair a G4 with an AWOL hard drive has lost touch with reality. Depending on which model G4 that you have, its market value may be substantially less than the upper figure quoted. The fact that the hard drive isn't detected on the bus, would likely indicate that it has an electronic and/or mechanical problem. If either is the case, none of the software solutions ("DiskWarrior" or "Data Rescue") will work, because they require a mechanically-functioning hard drive. You can check the data ribbon cable for abrasions in the insulation that may have caused a short, but that's probably a long shot. You should also check that the power connection is plugged securely into the back of the drive, even though it's typically such a tight fit, that it rarely comes loose. The possibility of unexpected hard drive failure is the primary reason for routinely backing up the data, so you only need to worry about buying/installing a replacement. Professional data recovery companies can retrieve data from the most severely damaged hard drives, but the cost is quite expensive for the home computer user. If you don't have files on the hard drive that you need to retrieve, I'd suggest replacing it with a new one. If you post back with the G4 model/processor speed that you have, a compatible replacement can be recommended.

I think you will need to upgrade to Leopard 10.5.8 to get the iTunes and Safari versions which will work with your iPhone.

  • I had to reinstall Lion because my computer was non responsive. Now all my stuff (applications, etc) are gone. I have a time machine backup - does that have my applications and if so how do I get them from the backup to my computer? It is power mac 2 x2.8

It is power mac 2 x2.8 GHz Quad core intel xeon running 10.7.3 - purchased in 2006
Or how can I transfer the appliucations form my laptop?

Ok. I have 2 hard drives and one of them died apparently so..not knowing what to do, I did chose reinstall Lion after command r open start-up. The whole thing is a mess but my computer is back up and running with the second hard drive. I had a time machine backup which I've been dragging stuff out of. i had to re enter serial numbers and do all sorts of initial set up stuff. 1) How do I get all of my icons (like my HD icon and external drives icons) to appear on my desktop again? I can only find them through a finder window. 2) i now have to type a password to get into my computer (user) - I 'm the only user and don't want to have to do that.

  • All ports on my power mac G5 have gone out.

A few months ago all the ports on my power mac g5 went out, usb ports, ethernet, firewire, headphones, everything is out except for the power button. What can I do?

    Hi, one thing to try...
reset FW bus, same goes for USB reset...
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

  • Power Mac G4 MDD problems with Hardware test Memory errors

I have been troubleshooting slowness and unexplained lockups on my Power Mac G4 MDD. I've had the system since 2002. I tried to run hardware test (the disk that came with my system), and I get an error message at startup:
Invalid Memory Access at %SRRO: 00034870
    %SRR1: 00003030
I run mac-boot, and get another memory error
    Invalid Memory Access at:
    %SRRO: 056106dc
    %SRR1: 00003030
Does this mean my memory has gone bad? I don't get any other screens for testing hardware.
The lockups are varied, but many seem to deal with Safari. I have also repaired disk permissions and repaired disk. I then get security error messages when I restart, and I choose to fix them, and things are fine for a while, but then it slows down some and starts locking up again.
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    Marbot61

    Hi Marbot61,
You might be interested in the thread "error when booting from AHT CD" on this forum. Since four different users have had the same error message in two days, perhaps ram chips are actually ok, and there is something else going on with the AHT CD boot process.

  • Power Mac G5: A common dilemma: to upgrade or buy new

I know there are a lot of discussions on this topic going around, but everyone's needs and uses are different, so I'd appreciate any input on my situation.
I own a Dual 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5 with only 1GB RAM and a failing 160GB hard drive.
At this point, I basically only use this machine for web browsing, iTunes, and Garageband, and am running Tiger.
I had been having some major hard drive problems so I wiped my system and re-installed Tiger , importing everything from my iBookG4 (which, I recently dropped and the screen connection has failed and is unusable except for as an external hard drive in target disk mode. it is probably too expensive to fix for what its worth so I will probably try to sell it for scrap).
Anyway, everything was ok for about a week until I opened firefox and noticed all my settings and bookmarks were gone. When I restarted my computer, my music, pictures, documents, and movies folders were all unable to be located (although my applications were fine and my hard drive still showed that the space was the same). I'm not sure if I imported some problem from my iBook or if my hard drive was just messing up again, but I've decided that I either need to upgrade or get a new computer.
Basically, I am thinking about upgrading my memory, getting a new hard drive, and upgrading to leopard (mostly for time machine). Or, possibly getting a new iMac or waiting a bit and then getting a new iMac or even (gasp) a PC (highly unlikely).
I was going to get the memory from ramjet and I was thinking of only adding 1GB to make 2GB but could be persuaded of getting more but 400Mhz DDR memory is a bit more expensive than other types. As for the hard drive, I was thinking about getting a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA 3.0Gb/s 320-GB Hard Drive with a 16 MB cache. I could pay $15 more for a 500GB with 32 MB cache but i really don't need the space and am unsure whether the cache will really help much. Seagates used to have a pretty good rep I thought, but now they seem to be getting mixed reviews, so I don't know.
Obviously, I am no computer expert, so any help would be great. Would it be worth it to spend between $250 and $325 to get the memory, drive, and leapord when I could maybe sell my G5 and my 23" apple cinema display (the old clear kind) and get an iMac? I could maybe get about $700 - $800 for the G5 and around $300 - $350 for the display. Will an iMac be faster than my G5 with the upgrades? I don't think I need a mac pro for my current uses.
Thanks for your help. Feel free to offer advice on what to do with my iBook too.

    Memory: $60 for 2 x 1GB, I'd call that very affordable.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/3200DDR2GBP/
Disk drives: 2 x $69 for pair of WD Caviar 640GB
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD6400AAKS/
It is not about capacity as much as speed and quiet, cool, and how well it handles OS X. I use half the drive, other half is unformatted free space. I'd skip the Seagates. 7200.11 is current.
I expect new iMacs in '09 as they are overdue.
Hard drives you keep or put in FW case.
Current Leopard is 10.5.4 DVD but would be nice to see another DVD now with 10.5.6, $109 (Amazon, maybe less Newegg?).
    iMac vs others:

Sounds like three things you may not be doing or have:
SuperDuper for backups. You don't need Leopard.
Disk Warrior. Everyone, or I should say "HFS+" needs #1 disk repair utility.
Backup drives. Two backup sets you switch between, and a small "emergency" partition on one for running Disk Warrior and such.
I replace or move older drives to backup use and put new boot drive in on a yearly basis. Some new drives and memory should be all you need. A couple people even stress their system with graphics and video, and upgrading to 3 or 4 new drives revived their system so that they could hold on and wait another year.

  • How do I Connect both an iBook and Power Mac G5 to Windows XP Pro network?

I have an existing Windows network at home, with a Motorola Surfborad Cable Modem, Linksys Wired Cable/DSL VPN Router with 5-port 10/100 switch (BEFVP41), Linksys Wireless G Access Point (WAP54G), Linksys Etherfast 10/100 Workgroup Switches (EZXS55W v3) and several connected devices including: two Windows Desktops (wired), a Humax TiVo (wireless), Two (2) SlimDevice Squeezeboxes (wireless), and a Microsoft X-Box game system.
For some reason, I cannot successfully connect either a Power Mac G5 (wired) or an iBook (wireless) to the newtork and internet. In both cases, if I attempt to connect them, the router does appear to see them, but I can't get connection to the Internet.
Also, if I try to access either the Router or the WAP via their respective Access URL's: http://10.0.1.1/ & http://10.0.1.2/ nothing happens.
I have disconnected all the other connected devices and tried to connect them with no results.
Re-starting the cable modem, router or WAP didn't help.
If I connect one of the Windows PC's to the same cable I have tried unsuccessfully with the Power Mac, The Windows PC connects to both the Network and Internet immediately!
Additionally, I have checked out the entire wiring system, which are Cat5E cables. This included re-checking all connectors and testing each wire run. All cables are "straight through" with no opens, shorts or cross0overs.
I am sure that I am doing something wrong and that there is an "easy fix", but it's beyond my meager knowledge.
If someone can supply me with "Step by Step", detailed instructions on how to accomplish this, please help me.
    Sincerely,
Gordy in Reading, MA - USA

    Hi Gordy,
Well, that's certainly some setup you've got there.
Also, if I try to access either the Router or the WAP via their respective Access URL's: http://10.0.1.1/ & http://10.0.1.2/ nothing happens.
I'm not sure about those URL's. Plug your PowerMac into the router , then launch Safari and type 192.168.1.100 in the address bar it should allow you to access the routers settings via the web-based utility. Please check and see if that much that works and post back.

  • Power Mac G4 MDD Random Power Shut Down

I am located in Thailand and have a Power Mac G4 purchased in November 2003. Last month the computer shut-down at random times and during various types of operations. CPU and hard drive temperatures were well within range, the installed battery tested at 3.5 volts. A new UPS was purchased with surge protection, no software was provided or appeared necessary. Often times the computer would re-start if I let it set for 30 minutes or more. Sometimes if the power plug was removed and re-inserted or the UPS re-set, the computer would start.
Associated hardware consists of Canon Printer, Mac keyboard, Kensington turbo ball, stand alone backup hard disk, flash card reader, ViewSonic moniter (8 to 10 years old), flash card reader, USB hub and audio system. Am connected to the internet via a router with one other computers on the line.
The problem has occurred with and without the attached hardware except for the monitor, keyboard and turbo ball which had to be attached to operate. The keyboard, turbo ball and computer where serviced by local Apple service center. The keyboard and turbo ball checked out OK. After sever attempts since the shutdowns were random and could not be forced, the service center after much testing and waiting decided the logic board need replacement which was done (400+ USD). A new power supply was ordered but they stated it did not need replacement.
Since the new logic board was installed and run for three days with no problem, the computer was returned with 90 day warranty. The problem almost immediately returned but has run OK for long periods of time before a random shut-down occurs. The shop was contacted and we are continuing to observe the problem but I hate to give up the use of my only computer for another month, like the last repair.
The following chart is a play by play account since the repairs.
The shop and I are completely stumped and any comments would be appreciated
*Power Mac G4 MDD Random Shut-down Problem*
Note 1: shut-down is same as pulling the power plug.
Note 2: below is complete list of events, on dates not shown, computer working normally.
    DATE TIME EVENT
May 9, 2008 noon Picked up computer from Phuket Alpha after replacing logic board and
complete check-out. (Power supply not replaced)
May 9, 2008 evening Shut-down several times, could re-start a couple of times and then shut-
    down and could not re-start.
May 10, 2008 all day Computer working OK.
    May 17, 2008 5:34 AM Shut-down.
Turned off UPS, turned on UPS and computer started by itself without using
    Mac start button.
Shut-down minutes later, would not re-start using any method i.e., re-set
    UPS, pull-out power plug etc.
May 18, 2008 noon Turned on computer, OK.
May 19, 2008 1:30 AM Selected sleep from Apple drop down menu, computer shut-down.
May 19, 2008 4:30 AM Turned off UPS, turned on UPS and pressed start button on computer, started OK.
May 19, 2008 1 hr later Shut-down while using Safari
May 19, 2008 evening Started computer OK, then placed in sleep mode.
May 19, 2008 8:00 PM Pressed space bar to wake-up Mac, computer immediately shut-down and
UPS alarm came on. Re-set UPS and computer came on with high-speed
sound of (fan or hard-drive) which ran for several minutes (estimate at
least 5). Computer then worked OK for many hours.
May 22, 2008 6:30 AM After using all night, computer shut-down while using Safari.
May 22, 2008 1:00 PM Pressed Mac start button and computer operating OK.

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
Replace the power cord. If this doesn't alleviate the condition, (from your description) I would consider the PSU to be the most likely suspect.

  • Power Mac G4 (FW800) freezes often, with an occasional kernel panic

I recently purchased a Power Mac G4 (FW800) on eBay for $160, minus a hard drive and stock video card, along with a hard drive cage.
Since I opened the box it came in late Saturday night, the lovely machine has constantly stalled, crashed, and for a while, I received kernel panics left and right-in fact, I had one today, but it was the text version (unlike the visual kernel panic, which is the kernel panic seen in OS X 10.2+, and I have 10.4.11 running on this machine).
Often, if I multitask, import music on iTunes, or do intense activity, it freezes.
To solve the problem, I have done multiple memory tests, have performed disk checks (verified disk permissions and have verified the disk itself, and have done repairs on the disk), have swapped RAM for more stable ram (I was getting a RAM error for a while with some generic RAM).
I would hate to sell the machine for parts, but if worse comes to worse, that may be the route I may go under. Is there anything I could do to avoid having to go that route? From the inside, all of the motherboard capacitors look fine, but I haven't checked the graphics card yet, but I doubt that's the culprit. I want to see if I could push my luck with Apple sending the AHT for the Power Mac, since I can't find any on eBay, but I'm working with a vintage Mac here, and this is New York, so my luck may be out.
Interesting, I installed iStat, and it has been giving me misleading readings. It says my CPU is at over 1000ºC, when I know through Temperature Monitor that the CPU is around 100º-110ºF and rarely goes above 115ºF.
There are some things I haven't tried yet:
    1) Buying actual 2.5v RAM. That may hopefully be the key.
    2) Removing the USB card I put in, along with my Broadcom-equipped Belkin Wi-Fi card I put in.
    3) Calling Apple and begging them to send me a copy of the AHT for the Power Mac, and with that, hopefully, a copy of the system software.
Any suggestions? Comments? If need be, I'll post the system/crash logs for you hardware junkies.
    System stats:
    Power Mac G4 (FW800)
    1.0GHz PowerPC G4 on a 133MHz bus
1GB PC2100 DDR SDRAM (originally had some PC3200 in the machine).
    120GB Seagate HD
    Stock Phillips CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo
Pioneer DVD-111D (the nice DVD burner I cannibalized off my beautiful homebuilt Wine-doze PC)
    Belkin 54g 802.11g Wi-Fi card
    Masscool XWT-MTU25 USB 2.0 card
So far, I have removed iStat, have gone ahead and pulled out the USB card. We'll keep fingers crossed.

Did both, and I still freeze up when importing iTunes songs. I'll include some kernel panic logs for reference, for you techies.

I purchased a used Power Mac G4.  It is running OS 10.4
The problem is that it does not have iMovie installed.  Online help states that I need the restore disk, which I don't have.  Is there a way to get it, or is there another alternative?
The other problem is that updating the software requires a password from the former owner.  The machine boots to desktop without a password, it's just needed for updating Safari.  Is there a way to reset that?
The machine is in other wise fine shape and I'd like to make it useful.
    Thanks,
    Jay

If you are in the US call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
If you are in another country:

Have you asked the vendor for the password?
iMovie is part of iLife. You should be able to purchase the relavent version on eBay or Amazon.

  • Power Mac G5 PCI Ethernet Drops Internet or always loading.

    Hi,
I have a very weird problem.
The ethernet card on my Power Mac stopped working and I bought a PCI Ethernet card to replace it. I also have the Airport Card installed and the wireless internet works perfect but it is not ideal to stream video to my PS3 or my Macbook.
The PCI card presents a very particular problem, when I connect using the PCI ethernet, I try opening Safari with apple.com as Home page and it never loads, it loads to the middle and stays there. If I try loading another page after like iPhone blog, sports or google, it loads fine and seems to be ok. If I try YouTube or Google video, it happens again and it freezes.
    I have tried the following:
Open Firefox and since Firefox has Google as Home page, it loads just fine but after browsing 2 - 4 websites it sort of freezes.
Erase the network location and network setting for PCI ethernet.
Physically change the slot of the card on the Power Mac.
I got the PCI Card replaced by a new one and still same problem.
Change the cable, router port (I have a Time Capsule).
I would like to know if there's any way to identify this problem to the card or the computer or the network settings. It is very weird and I don't know if I buy a PCI wireless 802.11 n card will be different?
I did a speed test and gave me 9372 kbps download speed and 732 kbps uploard speed but as I write this topic the progress bar is stuck at the middle and is still like loading the page.
I would appreciate any suggestions and Help!!
    Thank you.

I should have asked earlier, but did you do the basic trouble-shooting step of resetting the PRAM.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Also if it might work without the drivers, did you try it previously with the driver not installed?
As a test, you can try creating a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane. Log out and log in to the new account. Do you have the same problem in the new account? If you do not, the problem is somewhere in your current user account. If you do have the same issue, the problem is with your overall system or with hardware.
If the latter (the issue recurs in more than one user account), do you have a place, such as a second internal drive or external FireWire drive, where you can install a fresh Mac OS X system, and boot from it? If it works with a new installation, you have narrowed the problem down to your current overall system. You can focus your trouble-shooting there. Or you can do an +Archive and Install+ option re-install. This option will give you a fresh system while preserving your user data, but be sure to do a backup of at least your personal data in case something bad happens.
If you have the same problem with a fresh system installation, this product is somehow not compatible with your hardware.
