Safari hangs and cannot be forced to quit...

Mountain Lion 10.8.2
Since the 6.0.2 update, I am finding that Safari hangs 4-5 times a day, and cannot be Forced to Quit. Doing a Force Quit only causes a hard crash and you need to reboot.
Anyone else seeing this?

Moving back to 6.0.1 did not resolve this issue.
I am now investigating two possibilitites:
1. There was a supplemental Mountain Lion update for 10.6.2. Since I only started with 10.6.3, someone recommended I install that update. I have.
2. In the Energy system preferences, someone suggested that I turn off "Wake for Network Access". Since I have no other systems which would need to wake my MacMini, this seems like a good idea.
My MacMini is starting up now a LOT faster (3-4x) after restarts since the Supplemental Update.  We will see if having Wake for Network Access makes any difference.

  • Safari hangs and won't force quit

I tried searching for this but the problem prevented that.
After repairing my permissions yesterday, Safari won't let me do certain things like right-clicking an image or goto various sites or let my use tabbed browsing. I just get stuck with the spinning beachball.
If I try to force quit Safari just disappears from the force quit menu while still existing in the Dock and in the background. I tried running top to get the process id and kill it but I couldn't find Safari in there.
I really need some help on this as I have to hand in an assignment online on monday.
    Anyone got some ideas?

  • Safari hangs and cannot run games on Facebook, says reloading over n over n over.....

When i use Safari and open webpages when I go to log in it hangs forever and sometimes never loads the page. I can not play any games on facebook either, keeps saying reconnecting over n over n over no matter what i do.  Firefix works perfectly and have had Verizon out 3 times thinking it was my internet connection.  Any suggestions?

    HI Michael...
From your Safari menu bar (top of your screen) click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:  Remove All Website Data
Now back to the menu bar, click Safari > Empty Cache
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, try deleting the cache associated with Safari.
Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db. Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
For Lion v10.7x:  To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Try Safari.

  • HT1338 my mail is not on screen and cannot be force quit as well!! Help?

my mail is not on the screen  and cannot be forced quit as well - all the other applications seem to be working- cant turned computer off either!!

Try bringing up the Force Quit window from the Apple menu (or with Command-Option-Esc on the keyboard).  Is this where you tried to force quit Mail before?  If Mail is listed, select it and try a Force Quit.
If the Mac does not shut down because it is stalled during the log out process, press and hold down the Power Button to force a shutdown.  Then press and release to start up again.

  • I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediately started having consistent problems with Open Office 12 (would hang, and need a Force quit to recover). Has anybody else seen these problems? Any solutions other than going back to Snow Leopard? (I did).

I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediately started having consistent problems with Open Office 12 (would hang, and need a Force quit to recover). Has anybody else seen these problems? Any solutions other than going back to Snow Leopard? (I did). But I'd like to use iCloud with iPad.

Hi Pete. The repair of disk permissions can help resolve  any application crashing or misbehaving.
As for Lion and the two camps, I think that is a reasonable observation. In my office we have about a dozen Mac's and about one third of those Mac's had problems after updating from 10.6 to 10.7. The main problem for these Mac's was a loss of wifi stability. But for the other two-thirds, Lion was a smooth transition.
Personally, my Lion experience was fine. But I did get a new i7 MacBook Pro with Lion already installed and only had to migrate my user data from a 10.6.8 TM backup.
So I think that is a key for Lion's operational success. A clean install of Lion on a new Mac would not cause too many operational issues. But an installation, or more correctly, an update to Lion from SL increased the chances of failure for some users - especially when old software & plugins resided on the Mac. And I would say that they were the people that you saw at the Apple store.
As for the "latest release of Lion fixed my problems" statement, my experience with these and other forums is that people mostly only go there to complain about the problems they are having. If they are having no problems then they either keep it to themselves or they try to help the users who are experiencing trouble...

  • Safari hangs and poor performance in MBPR (Mid 2012)

Safari hangs and poor performance in MBPR (Mid 2012)? OS X 10.10.2 is up to date

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.
If your browser is Safari, then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. If the Downloads button (with the icon of a downward-pointing arrow) is showing in the toolbar, click it and then click Clear in the box that appears. The download history will be removed. Any change?
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select the Advanced tab in the Preferences window and uncheck the box marked
              Stop plug-ins to save power
    Any change?
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If Parental Controls is active for any user, please turn it off and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Follow the instructions in this support article. Any change?
Open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Photos, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • Apple TV will stream music but will not connect to iTunes library to stream movies or podcasts.  During the unsuccessful connection process, iTunes becomes unresponsive and must be forced to quit.

Apple TV 3 will stream music via Home Sharing from iTunes on Mac running 10.6.8 but will not connect to iTunes library to stream movies or podcasts.  When trying to connect, iTunes becomes unresponsive and must be forced to quit.  ATV will stream movies purchased through the ATV but not those purchased through or ripped/copied onto the Mac.  I've tried fixes suggested for similar problems (rebooting ATV and Mac, signing out then back into iTunes Store) to no success.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

This is the most bogus example of Apple rip-off EVER.  They do not advertise this *feature* and yet expect people to invest in an Apple ECOSYSTEM?  My experience with Apple TV using a central media "server" (a dedicated Mac Mini) has been atrocious.  I continually get "Cannot connect..." messages and with typical Apple "it just works" mentality, there is no reason stated.  I HATE APPLE TV and I HATE APPLE.  Peddle your crapple somewhere else.

  • Safari hangs and crashes

I've owned a MPB for 13 months and for 13 months it's been nothing but headaches.
I know that to other Mac users this sounds negative because Apple products are cool, but my experience with my MPB has been nothing but negative.
I've written to the Cupertino office, I've written to the Apple store where I purchased this unit, and am currently waiting for an answer (been about ten days since i mailed out copies of problem logs and description of problems).
One trip to genius bar = zero resolution.
Two apple care calls = zero resolution.
Countless inquiries on the forums = zero resolution.
    Safari hangs and crashes.
Word will lock up really badly. The other day I had a doc opened, started a new doc, it took my MPB 17 seconds to start a new doc.
XL will lock up though not as much (and I don't use it as much).
I'm a blogger, so I use Safari and Word from morning to night.
This morning no video (vimeo, youtube, other video types) would play on Safari.
On safari some weird flickering of different color panes sometimes occurs. Sometimes I get some grey vertical bars across.
When I go full-screen while watching Netflix the screen goes dark, I have to refresh the page, restart the movie.
If anyone has a suggestion as to what to do, please help me.
These problems have been present since day one. This was a unit which was an exchange. The first MPB I got from the Tysons Corner store in Virginia had a graphic card on the fritz, I returned it after 3 days.
    Can anyone understand my frustration?

    Hi
I'm not using Tiger so I don't know the terminology used in OnyX's Tiger version. Anyway, the steps are in the Automation panel. I believe "maintenance scripts" is used in both versions. Not sure about the caches. Have a look at this post for explanations.
If the above doesn't help, I suggest you start a new thread, as your issues may be different than the originator of this thread. Include a copy of the entire crash report (note: If the crash report says "hang", then OnyX is usually the remedy.) Otherwise, select "report" on the quit panel, then copy/paste the entire crash report to your post in the new thread.

  • "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."  Trying to format my iomega external HD for use with Mac

Hi. Trying to connect iomega ext. HD. i have to reformat for Mac. When i plug in & go to Disk Utility, the external shows up and i'm supposed to click "partition". When i do, a box comes up saying ""Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." I quit and relaunched, same results. After googling my question, i came up with this:
"Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."
(Quitting and reopening Disk Utility does not help.)
The following also appears in Console log:
*** malloc[419]: Deallocation of a pointer not malloced: 0x290a410; This could be a double free(), or free() called with the middle of an allocated block; Try setting environment variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug : for architecture i386 object: ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes malformed object (unknown flavor for flavor number 0 in LC_UNIXTHREAD command 27 can't byte swap it)
    Workaround
    Quit Disk Utility.
From the Finder's Go menu, choose Go to Folder....
Type the following, then click OK: /Library/Receipts
Temporarily remove these iTunes receipts from /Library/Receipts (sort the folder alphabetically as a list):
    iTunes.pkg
    iTunes4.pkg
You can put them on the desktop, for example. Do not remove iTunesX.pkg or iTunes Phone Driver.pkg.
Open Disk Utility and repair disk permissions again.
    Quit Disk Utility.
Put the removed iTunes receipts back in /Library/Receipts.
Note: This issue does not affect Disk Utility's verify or repair disk features.
All seemed good, for a moment, until, upon going back to Disk Utility after removing itunes4.pkg and putting on desktop (i did not have itunes.pkg to remove) the same thing was happening. When i highlite my iomega ext. on left of page, disk perrmissions is grayed and does not allow me to click on it. Same problem from the start. Can somebody please help me out here? That would soooo awesome. Thanx!

i'm just scared i will do something wrong on my own and lose my data.
You shouldn't be scared of that, because you should already have backups. If you don't have backups, then backing up is the first priority.
Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and restart. When you hear the chime, hold down the C key and keep holding it until the Apple logo appears on the display. You should now see the language selection screen. Select your language, then choose Utilities > Disk Utility from the menu bar. In the Disk Utility window, select the external drive (not the internal). The drive may already have a data partition, in which case there will be another icon below the drive icon. Choose the drive icon, then select the Partition tab. Create a single partition with the default options (GUID partition table, Mac OS X Extended Journaled).
When the partitioning is done, select the startup volume on your internal drive in the DU window. Select the Restore tab. Drag the icon of the startup volume to the "Source" field. Then drag the icon of the newly-created volume on the external drive to the "Destination" field. Make sure you have this right. Then click the Restore button, and the data on your startup volume will be copied to the external drive.

  • What should I do if ipad hang and cannot turn it off?

What should I do if Ipad 2 hang and cannot turm it off?

    Try a reset:
    1. Hold the Sleep and Home button down (together) for about 10 seconds
    2. Until you see the Apple logo (very important)

I already verified and repaired the disc and its permissions but the problem keeps coming back.
Today, for the first time it quitted suddendly ( find below the copy of the report ).
Do you have any idea what I could check ?
Thanks in advance fon any help you might be able to provide.

You need to update your Flash plug-in to the most current version. Make sure you select the Intel version.
When the install is complete, Safari automatically opens to the Adobe Flash page confirming the plug-in was correctly installed.
Quit Safari and "repair permissions" using Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.

  • Safari hangs and Lion Crashes

    Hi,
I was borwsing the web in my MacBook Pro using Safari 5.1. I was composing a email on Gmail when the colorful spinwheel appeared. I let the spinwheel to run for about 45 seconds before attempting a Force Quit. Since Safari did not get out of its spinwheel (hang), I then went to the Apple Menu and opened up the "Force Quit" menu, I selected Safari and proceeded to force quit the progam. This is where things got wierd, after force quitting Safari, the whole system became unresponsive, I was not able to make any selections on the Apple Menu. However the most bizzare part of the issue was that the cursor still moved but nothing was selectable on screen, so I decided to make a key combination (cmd+option+power button) to make a force restart (I don't like the forced restart method where the user presses the power button for more than 5 seconds, I am told that the key combination of forced restart allows the EFI to reset the whole system).
Has anyone experienced such symptoms when using Safari?, Is this a common issue?
    Thanks for your time!

Lion in it's current released form ( 10.7.1 ) has lots of strange glitches and Safari is a memory hogging performance killer. If you open Activity Monitor with Safari open adn browsing like you usually do, then you will notice two connected processes : Safari itself and "Safari webcontent" , these two can also be accompanied by the evil Flash plugin of course.
"Webcontent" is new in v5.1 and is a sandboxing around any open website, a security "firewall" for the web - if a website has malware that wants to sneak via Safari into your Harddisk, then the webcontent process will forbid that.  Safari ( as all apps and the OS itself ) in Lion runs by default in 64bit usermode mode, making things even worse, because the App has unlimited access to the physically available RAM ( memory ), so if Safari goes crazy due to some websites, it can occupy every ressource in Mac OSX so bad that the rest of the OS becomes unresponsive. Because 64bit Browser will also need 64bit plugins, and as we all know that flash on its own is itself ressource intense, you might imagine what happens if such "webprocesses" have embedded flash movies in them ..
So, momentary tragically this mix of 64bit computing and the security sandboxing model leads to all sort of issues, including memory leaks and hangs ( not only in Safari , but it is a number one source for that ) .
You can limit the available memory, this cures some issues = run Safari in 32bit mode. This will also force the flash plugin to 32bit mode, making it more ressource friendly ( to some degree at least ) .
Reveal Safari in your application folder, right click "get info" and checkmark "run in 32bit compatibility mode".
To avoid having the flash plugin active all the time ( or to play videos in Quicktime ) , I recommend the safari extension "click to flash" ( free ) installable via safari's Settings Menu. Only movies that you want to see will then play ( after you click them, as the name implies ) - this limits memory usage of Safari, too.
A befriended developer who has already the final version of 10.7.2 update swears that it cures virtually all existing Lion and Safari issues. It should be available on or before October 12 together with iCloud and iOS5 and the new iTunes . Apple reveled oct 12 as the introduction date for their new line of apps and iCloud, and because 10.7.2 integrates all these needed stuff for it to work, it must come out the very same day or even before. ( this is no "Speculation" which is "forbidden to discuss here" -- it's a simple matter of fact , watch the last keynote held by Apple CEO Cook where they introduce iphone4s - it has all the infos )
So. only 2 days left maximum, then we all be happy I guess

  • Here's a fix for Safari hanging and taking down the system..

There appears to be a serious bug in Mac OS X's lookupd which can pull the rug right out from under Mac OS X Tiger. While this bug could possibly be triggered in a number of different ways, there has been a recent rash of reports that have been tracked to some mainstream Web sites such as FoxNews.com using links to an adware site js.adsonar.com. This document describes a quick way out of the hang and a simple way to block links to js.adsonar.com from taking down Tiger again. While this doesn't fix the underlying lookupd bug itself, it prevents Mac OS X from hanging, while allowing you to continue using Web sites like FoxNews.com with full Java and JavaScript access enabled.
The symptoms of this problem are as follows:
    • You're surfing the web and the page you are on fails to completely load.
    • No further pages will load in your browser.
    • You can switch to other applications that may already be running and save any open files.
    • You can no longer launch any additional applications, their icons will bounce in the dock for a while and then they will just stop bouncing.
    • You can no longer use any other Finder functions.
    • You can no longer use command-option-escape to force quit.
    • You can not log out, restart or shut down.
Apparently these symptoms indicate that a low-level component of Mac OS X, lookupd, has hung. Since lookupd is used by many other parts of Mac OS X, it effectively hangs Mac OS X itself.
If this sounds like a problem you are having, try the steps in the following link to fix it.

    Hope it helps,

    Hi Bee,
There is indeed "such a bug", though you may be fortunate enough to not be affected. Unfortunately MANY others are affected by this. I spent three days helping track this down (many of those 38 posts were while tracking it down in the Tiger discussions) and find a fix to this and thought that others might benefit by my efforts... By the way it's NOT a Safari bug, it happens in any browser, it's a "lookupd" bug which may be triggered by surfing to certain sites which contain links to "js.adsonar.com", which if you have JavaScript enabled can hang lookupd and take down your entire system... consider yourself lucky that it hasn't happened to you...
Here is some background information if you don't believe me:

I only posted this fix to the specific threads where people were having Safari hang, incase it might help them. Forgive me for trying to help them... I thought that was the point of these boards and that was why they started threads about their issues... I'd be willing to bet that this fix will indeed fix many of their problems...
I also posted one additional new topic here on the Safari board and one on the Tiger board for new readers looking for solutions to the same system hangs they may be getting while surfing.
If this fix does indeed help any of you other readers, please post back here so that Bee can indeed see that I'm not just posting here to waste my time...

  • Safari Hangs and has to be restarted

Safari will open, will navigate to a few sites and then just stops working. It needs a force quit, then does the same the next time it's opened.
I've run a disk verification and repair. I've also deleted the flashplayer files (as recommended by some) - no measurable benefit from any of this.
    The setup: 1.25 GHz eMac PPC G4, 768MB ram, OSX 10.4.11, Safari 3.2.1 (4525.27.1)

The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 / )
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

  • Safari disappeared and cannot install

    Mac OS X 10.4.10
I tried to install Safari 3 Beta, but I Force Quit during installation because some applications were open.
    I lost Safari,
found from a friend the Max OS X Install Disc, 10.4.9 version for MacBook and try to install like in
"Safari disappeared in OS X Tiger v.10.4.10"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1082242&tstart=0
But when I try to install only Safari, Optional Installs.mpkg doesen't open. Maybe my Installer doesn't work anymore?
Since I lost Safari, applications like Mail, iTunes, Onyx, Adium or Acquisition dont open.
Word, Firefox, VLC open without problem.
When I try to put the Intallation CD I and start the complete installation I have one grey view with some kernel panic...
What do I have to do ?

    Trash the com.apple.Safari.plist
You will find it in Home folder>Library>Preferences>com.apple.Safari.plist
    Now try again ...
** Or start a NEW topic in the OSX 10.3.9 OR EARLIER forum with as TITEL >Application not opening<
    Good luck ...
