  • Frozen halfway through shutting down

Hi, I also posted this under iMac cd/dvd drive forum, but thought I'd give it a shot here too just in case:
Help! I have a brand new iMac (got it for Xmas) and am very computer un-savvy so I need some assistance. I loaded a cd which never showed up on the desktop, and it made everything other than Safari unclickable (kaleidoscope whirly showed up). I tried the eject button on the keyboard, looked online on how to force eject, tried that, didn't work, then found online some suggestions to shut down then restart the computer. I forced shut down, got the dialogue boxes for shutdown and everything I had open, but now it's frozen halfway through shutting down. I can see my desktop background and mouse cursor, but there's no dashboard, no menu at the top...I tried holding down the keyboard shortcuts for force shut down, tried holding down the power button on the back...HELP!!!! I'm starting to freak out. I've had to get on my laptop in order to post this since NOTHING is working on the iMac. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

  • My library freezes halfway through loading

I updated Itunes software to most current version 7.3.1 and now my library freezes halfway through loading. I've powered down and restarted and was able to backup library with the finder to an external hard drive (I think?). I've tried downloading the software again reloading it power down and back up and still the same issue. What should I do?

it is different for each player. for the zvm, slide power/hold button to the on position and gently press and hold the reset button for a few seconds, release reset button then release power slider and ther it is. try trouble shooting on the creative site, and there are also sticky posts on the forums on this issue ([url="http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=dap&message.id=3">here[/url])Message Edited by dazed on 02-22-200709:27 PM

  • Safari not opening properly - sticks halfway through loading

    Hi there,
My Safari window on my iMac keeps opening but then the pages won't load fully - for eg, the start page comes up with the apple homepage which starts highlighting blue as if it were opening but then sticks halfway through this process.
    Firefox is working fine though.
    Help!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Safari stops downloading halfway through and i cant retry it

    Hello,
I'm having a problem with my Safari in Macbook Pro and it's really making me angry.
So the problem is that when i try to download anything that's more than 100MB or even more than 50MB safari stops downloading it halfway through and it doesn't give me any explanation or anything really and another issue is that i cant retry it ; i tried to download it again and it doesn't make any difference it stops downloading maybe after it downloads a couple more MB than the last one. I tried using Google Chrome and i have the same problem with that too.
    I appreciate any helpful tips.

    Several ideas ...
Since both browsers are affected, check with your ISP. There may be a bandwidth stipulation.
Disable anti virus software if installed.
Check Safari > Preferences > Extensions. If there are any installed, switch to OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
Little Snitch or Mac Keeper installed?  Either one are problematic.

  • Why does my iMac shutdown halfway through loading on startup?

I get a chime then the Apple logo appears, then the progress bar gets to about halfway, then it shuts down.
    Specs
Late 2009 27" iMac Intel Core Duo 3.06ghz
128GB Samsung SSD installed in place of Optical Drive.
    Stock 1TB HD
12GB RAM, 2x4GB and 2x2GB. The 2x2GB sticks are the stock RAM.
    OSX Yosemite.
      Background Info
I haven't used the iMac in about a month as I have a Macbook Pro from work that I use primarily.
I turned on the iMac yesterday and the Startup was VERY SLOW, like 5 minutes.
I looked at some forums and saw that I should make my SSD my primary boot drive. I did this and restarted but the boot time was the same.
Next I shutdown the computer and restarted the SMC. This made the boot time a little bit faster, maybe 2 minutes but it still wasn't acceptable.
Next I reset the NVRAM 3x and this made a significant improvement. It was now at about 25 seconds.
When I finally logged in I opened up Photoshop and Firefox and they both just bounced on the task bar for about 2 minutes. Photoshop finally opened but Mozilla did not. I looked in the Activity Monitor and I kept getting CrashReports that were taking up 75% of the system.
I did some googling and it seemed like I needed to run First Aid on the SSD.
I went to Disk Utility and tried Verifying the Disk and it gave me an error saying that it could not be verified and that I would need to open it up in Recovery Mode.
I restarted the computer and held down CMD+R and nothing happened, it just stayed on the white screen. I held down the power button until it shutdown and the powered it back up holding option. It showed that I did not have a recovery partition (even though I remember having one in the past). It did show my Samsung Drive.
I clicked on the Samsung Partition and it loaded about halfway then shutdown.
I tried just starting the computer up normally without holding anything down and it would do the same thing.
I decided that I didn't have anything on the computer that I desperately needed so I was just going to reinstall Yosemite.
I downloaded Yosemite on my MBP and made a bootable USB drive for it. (This took about 4 hours).
I went back to my iMac and plugged the USB drive in, turned on the iMac, and held down option (expecting that it would give me the option to boot from the USB Yosemite Installer) and it chimed, the apple logo came on, the loading bar got to halfway, and it shutdown.
I tried this about 5 times and it did the same thing.
I tried resetting the NVRAM and it just shuts down.
I've tried Safe Mode, resetting the SMC, option, etc. Nothing works.
I left it unplugged over night and tried starting up this morning and I get the same thing.
Yesterday I took out the 2x4GB ram sticks and made sure the stock 2x2GB sticks were properly seated. I tried resetting the NVRAM and it still loads halfway and then shuts down.
I don't know what else to try. When I used it more often a couple of months ago it was very fast upon start up and running memory intensive programs like Reason, Autodesk Inventor, Parallels, Ableton Live, etc.
I am very comfortable taking the computer apart I just don't know what to look for.
    Thanks for the help,
    Kyle

  • Safari has frozen. And it won't let me restart! What to do?

Safari froze (i.e. it won't let me do anything on the page but the window will still move around on the screen if I click on it).  I tried to close it.  When I did a notification popped up that says are you sure becuase multiple windows are up, per the usual.  i tried to click Close but nothing has happened.  It has been days! I tried to restart or shut down and a notification comes up that says the action was blocked by safari becuase it is still open (I yell "I CAN"T CLOSE IT!"). Please Help!!!
Oh and it is not giving me the Force Quit option when I right click Safari.  It still just says quit, etc.  Clicking quit again doesn't do anything.

  • HT4623 my safari is frozen--won't load?

Safari won't load, I keep getting that "twirly" thing.  All others work.  How do I fix it?

Force quit Safari. Command Option Escape keys together. Then choose Safari from the menu window. Or control click the icon in the Dock then hold the alt key Option Key and choose force quit. Or open Activity Monitor type safari into the search field then select and click the cross button in the top right hand of the window menu.
    Hope this helps.
