Safari heavy cpu load
hi all,
since lion i have great cpu-load (activitymonitor) and temp rises around 20°c higher, when safari is open.
safari-webcontent: 65% cpu
safari: 45% cpu
temp.: normal 48°c rises to 68°c !
compared to this, firefox 6.0: 4.3% cpu
so, when safari is not open, all ok, as before ...
thanks for help.

This happened to me again Friday, first time since the incident I reported here. Check of the system log showed a PMU error just prior to shutdown, also looks the something strange happened to the system clock a few minutes before the shutdown. According to the time stamp on the log entries, the clock was reset back about a month for a few entries, then corrected itself.
Since this time the machine wouldn't come back on, I called apple support who talked me though the PMU reset procedure but nothing worked. However, after letting it sit for several hours, I was able to power it back up. I ran the hardware checks from the install CD, but (of course) it showed no problems.
The mini is now being checked at the apple store in Cambridge (print-outs of the system logs plus a copy of this thread convinced them there was some sort of problem).
(I used the Drive Utility to run the fix permissions and verify disk - nothing unusual showed).

X230: what is expected temperature during heavy CPU load?
Hello all,
after few seconds of heavy CPU usage on my x230 termal sensors show temperature slightly above 100 degrees celsius. I think it's way to high and probably should call the service to replace the fan, clean the heatsink etc, but wanted to make sure.
For comparison, my previous machine (x201) did not ever go above 85 degrees during similar tasks.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Probably your heatsink is clogged with dusk or the thermal paste between your heatsink and Intel CPU dried up, causing poor heat transfer. Even in full load, the CPU temp should not exceed 90C.
I suggest that you contact Tech Support to replace the fan.

Osx 10.9 Mail & Safari High cpu load
Hello,
A few weeks ago I updated to OSX 10.9. After working a few days with it, I run into several high CPU load issues.
2 processes: mail-webmateriaal and safari-webmateriaal (dutch).
Now I use Chrome instead of Safari which solves 50% of my problem, but it is not so easy to change to another mail-client...
Does anyone have a clue about the possible cause, but even more important, a solution?
Best regards,
Johanjvdstoel,
Ditto. I have the exact same OS 10.9 issue on a Late 2008 iMac with a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo that is maxed out at 4 GB RAM (seemed like a lot of RAM at the time).
Mail, Safari, and Firefox--but not Chrome--whether running any 1, 2, or all 3 programs together keeps the CPU running hard at and often above 100%. This occurs even when the programs a sitting idle from the user's perspective. Disabling all extensions on Safari and Firefox did not help. Nor did running Onyx to clear all catches system wide.
Calling on anyone with a virtual PhD in Maverics (or real Apple OS 10.9 street-smarts) for suggestions.
Best,
Pete -
Setsockopt() hangs under heavy CPU load
Good morning,
I've got a problem that under 100% CPU load setsockopt() tends to hang for a few seconds (at least up to 9 seconds, after that time a watchdog process kills the other process so I don't know how far that can go). The call is as follows:
setsockopt(sckt_fd, IPPROTO_IP, IP_OPTIONS, (const char*)(&ip_option), ip_option.length+1);
From what I can see the failure can happen if besides 100% CPU load there's also a major network activity. The process that hangs has a real time priority, although based on this:
http://www.princeton.edu/~unix/Solaris/troubleshoot/schedule.html
I can see that the syscall itself does not run with the same priority as the process.
I have found the following Solaris bug:
http://bugs.opensolaris.org/view_bug.do?bug_id=4764836
However I cannot find any information what patch it is fixed in, if it is fixed at all in Solaris 10 because the bug report mentions Nevada.
So I have a couple of questions:
1. Any way to find where the bug (or related bugs) has been fixed?
2. Is there anything I can do to make Solaris perform setsockopt() for the process with a higher priority than for other processes?
Thanks for help.Barry Hemphill wrote:

All iMacs get very hot. The 'fix' for heat issues is to use third party software to crank up the fans. This has been issue #1 with iMacs since the first Core 2 Duo models. What didn't Apple just set the fans higher?
There are always manufacturing defects or flaws that can happen. Remember the first gen macbook pro? It was a nightmare with the whole heating/thermal paste issue...
Now with i5/i7, it's even more toasty inside an iMac and must be extremely difficult to keep it cool and quiet in there.
The quad core iMacs are unfortunately somewhat of a 'first gen' product as seen all over the interwebs. :/
Cranking up the fans is a safe move at this point I would say. -
[SOLVED] Heavy CPU load for no apparent reason
After my laptop is left on for about 15 minutes or so, with KDE 4.1 and a few programs running (firefox,a few okulars, dolphin, pidgin, emacs, conky), the load on my laptop climbs to over 4. 'top' shows X using 73% cpu, and about 10~15 kio_thumbnail process running, each using 1% cpu or so, and dolphin using about 20% cpu. I'm not using any desktop effects/compositing, which has caused similar issues before. But this has started happening regularly sometime in the past few days after an upgrade. Any ideas as what could be the problem?

Safari and a strange high cpu load
I have noticed that recently when i start Safari my cpu load starts to get crazy.
CPU load on one core reaches 92%and falls to 10%, then another core gets 90% load and falls to normal. It is happening continuously. My MBPro get extremely hot and loud.
Everything gets back to normal when I quit or force quit Safari.
Any ideas what is going on?
Other browsers like Firefox and Opera act normally.
Safari Version 3.0.4 (5523.10.6), Mac OS X 10.5.1 all updates till today.
EDIT: I've just done Empty Cache in the browser and the problem disappeared.
Message was edited by: BartoszOk, I found out, why I had a high cpu utilization.
It wasn't Safari 5's fault, but I had a big host file for blocking ads.

3 Kernal panics and high CPU load
2 problems: 1.) I've had 3 kernal panics since I bought my macbook a couple weeks ago. The latest one happened when I was just reading something on the screen, then I adjusted the screen angle (and prehaps the screen saver came on then too) and the screen goes black and the kernal panic notice comes up.
Another kernal panic came when I unpluged my headphones, and the 3rd I can't remember.
Is this a lot? It's more than 1 a week for moderate usage.
Now today I find that the CPU load goes up over 50 % (40-50 of it user) as seen with activity monitor, iStat pro wigit and core duo temp wigit. The temp also goes up to 80 degrees, all with no programs open! In addition, the total CPU usage listed in activity monitor is around 15%. Where is all this extra CPU usage coming from, and how do I stop it? Reseting sometimes solves the problem for a few minutes, then it is back.Glad to know we're making progress:
Now I'm way out of my depth having only ssh'd a noisy five-year-old, but I recall seeing on sites like MacIntouch that the Finder often tries to endlessly remount a share using SAMBA.
For instance: (from http://www.MacInTouch.com)
<<A lot of people have notice very heavy CPU load, but have been unable to determine which process it is that is causing it.
I had this same problem, tracked it down and worked around it before learning that many others were facing it. It's caused by Windoze File Sharing/Samba. For me, the problem only happened if Samba was enabled across a reboot. In this situation, nbmd tries to start up, hits an error, and quits, and is immediately relaunched. This repeats in excess of 20 times/second, causing the incredible load. I'm not sure why it doesn't show up as load, at least in the kernel task, but it doesn't.
The solution for me was to simply quit Windoze File Sharing and restart it. That generally allowed nbmd to come up without problems, but they would start up again after a reboot. I finally just turned it off WFS altogether (don't use it that often).>>
There now, that's as much as I know, and I offer it in the hope that those who know what ssh and SAMBA actually are, might be able to make some use of it...

How do you spread CPU load over more cores?
Hi
I recently bought a macbook pro quadcore i7 because my 2007 macbook couldn't cope with the demands of Logic when using it rewired with Ableton Live, and had lots of CPU overload messages.
I am really disappointed that having spent so much money to overcome this problem, it has only slightly improved the amount of overload messages. I read the article below about how to spread CPU power over the cores, now I have 8. I still can't figure out though how to control which channels are using which core and spreading the CPU load to cores 5-8 which don't seem to be being used. Any ideas?
Can I rewire from ableton to different cores?
In my project, the 2nd core keeps overloading whilst the others are down. Is it to do with aux channels, master channels, buses etc?
Or should I upload my memory to 8GB RAM?
Thanks
Steve
Here's the article:
About core activity
Logic breaks tasks down into threads that can be assigned to a single core for execution. It's not possible to split a single thread across multiple cores, although a single core may run multiple threads at the same time. This is one reason that you may sometimes see uneven load distributions across the available cores on your computer. If one thread is very processor-intensive, the core running that thread may show much more activity than the cores running less demanding tasks. This is the main reason that you may get "Core Audio Overload" warning messages even though some of the cores on your system may not show significant activity.
To monitor Logic as it uses the cores on your system, double-click the CPU meter in the Transport area.
A window displays a meter for each core.
The same concept applies to channel strips as well. Each channel strip—and all plug-ins it contains—is processed by one core. If you are using many processor-intensive plug-ins on a single channel strip, the core running it may show heavier activity. This is especially true if you are working at high sample rates (88.2 kHz or higher).
Redistributing core loads
If you find that a single core has much higher activity, use these strategies to redistribute the load.
In the example below, there is a single Software Instrument channel strip with plug-ins routed directly to Output 1-2. The channel strip for Output 1-2 has a large number of plug-ins.
In this example there is activity on two cores: the left core is handling the Software Instrument while the next core processes the Output 1-2 channel strip. You can use routing capabilities in Logic to distribute the load to more cores without changing the sound, as in the next image.
The resulting signal chain is Inst 1 > Aux 1 > Aux 2 > Out 1-2, as shown in this table:
Channel strip
Input
Output
Inst 1
Bus 1
Aux 1
Bus 1
Bus 2
Aux 2
Bus 2
Out 1-2
Also, the first four plug-ins have moved from Output 1-2 to Aux 1 and the remaining four plug-ins to Aux 2.
After adjusting the volumes to the respective channel strips appropriately, the result sounds identical, but now the load is distributed among four cores instead of two. You can use this concept to redistribute plug-ins from Audio channel strips, Software Instruments, Auxes, and Outputs (as in this example).
In the image above, there is still a very heavy load on a single core, even though it's using the routing described above. Notice the Inst 1 channel strip is selected. When a Software Instrument track is selected in the Arrange window, Logic enters "Live Input Mode". In this mode, Logic turns on every plug-in in the channel strip's signal path so the channel strip can be played live from a MIDI controller. All of this must be handled by a single thread and therefore just one core. It's a good idea to keep a track that uses an Audio channel strip selected in the Arrange window, unless you're actively playing or recording to a Software Instrument.OS X Snow Leopard introduced Grand Central, where the OS will distribute the load better to more cores, however it takes time for software to adapt to these changes and make a rewrite of the codebase and test it out, Apple's included.

I recently upgrade my Macbook Pro to OSX 9.0.4 and the system is running sluggishly slow, Activity Monitor showing kernel_task always running above 500% CPU load, system fan always running loud at startup but laptop is not overheating. Below is the EtreCheck report, hoping if anyone can help me fix this issue, much appreciate it. Btw, I have done the SMC reset, but nothing has helped.

0 B Page-outsThe kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
☞ high ambient temperature
☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display. -

After disabling Netflow, the load of the RP has been decreased dramaticly from <80% to ~30%. But we can't disable Netflow at all because we need the flows to get information for our DDoS protection.
We have now increased CPU ressources for processes:
(no scheduler max-task-time)
scheduler allocate 10000 4000
CPU load is (very) high again:
c6k-05.nc#sh proc cpu sorted
CPU utilization for five seconds: 90%/21%; one minute: 85%; five minutes: 86%

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At or near the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "System Version." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

OSX Lion QuickTime Internet Plug-In causes high CPU load
I have OSX Lion installed.
Now I have a CPU load between 80 to 130% caused by the Quicktime internet plug-in if I watch my ip-camera with Safari. Also I get no Audio out of my ip-camera anymore. In SnowLeopard everything was fine, Safari CPU load at 30%. What is wrong ? Can anybody help me ? It is an Y-Cam Knight SD and a MacMini core 2 Duo.
Karsten Preussner from GERMANYI had this same problem and couldn't get it to work at all. I tried to install the 3IVX plugin listed here and it didn't do anything. So I uninstalled it.
Then I thought to try my Macbook Pro and see if it was working on that computer, sure enough it was. I checked the HD/Library/Quicktime folder and it only had 4 items in it, whereas on the Mac Pro (that was not working) had 19 itmes in there. So, I moved all 19 out to a new folder and copied only the ones that were in the MBP. When I opened Safari IT WORKED!!! NO MORE PLUGIN FAILURE.
So, I must have just had too many old things in the quicktime folder that was causing it to fail.
Here is a screenshot of my HD/Library/Quicktime folder contents. The top folder shows the 4 items that should be in there (Perian is optional) and the bottom window in the screenshot shows all the stuff I previously had in there which caused the failure.
So If you are having this plugin failure, try removing all but these essentials from your HD/Library/Quicktime folder. It worked for me! -
CPU load alert on Enterprise Manager
Hi,
We have Oracle Database R1 (11.1.0.7.0). We see alerts on Enterprise Manager; "CPU Load is 2164260864, crossed warning (10) or critical (20) threshold." frequently.
Our CPU utilization looks normal; CPU in I/O Wait (%) = 0 but Run Queue Length (5-minute average)= 21,474,836.47 is critical. Currently we do not have any performance problems and we do not take a heavy load.
How can I check if this is the real load on our CPU and how can I learn what really causes it?
Thanks,
Hatice>How can I check if this is the real load on our CPU and how can I learn what really causes it?
might solution/answer be Operating System dependent?
How do I ask a question on the forums?

My Safari won't load any page.
Hi. I'm amsuherdi1111.
Recently my safari won't load any page/website. My safari can start loading a website after I restart my mabook pro. And then after a day, the safari won't load any website again. What might cause this to happen? Another application that use internet like steam, mail, skype, etc. is working normally. Oh and it's not only safari. Google Chrome also have the same problem.
I'm very thankful if any of you who can solve this, this problem is killin' me XD1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger.

At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window.

Safari will not load any page and freezes then crashes on startup
Hey all,
Been having nothing but problems on my MacPro for the last several months. All started when my hard drive went bad. I bought a brand new hard drive, installed Lion from scratch and then started gradually restoring my files from backup. But I've continued to have massive problems. Everything from permissions issues to freezing, etc. I've reinstalled Lion about 5 times now! Knock on wood, I'm almost back up and running OK, but I have one outstanding issue I can't figure out.
Safari just plain will NOT function. It's Safari 6. It was working, things were loading and running fine. But the other day I came back to my machine and it was frozen. Got a message saying that web pages weren't responding. So I tried forcing a reload and the application crashed. Now I can't get it to work at all. I've cleared the cache, deleted just about all the preferences, etc. Won't load. Comes up with blank page, sits there unresponsive and eventually crashes. I've tried re-installing it multiple times.
I think either some file that I need is locked or corrupt or something but I think it's at the core system level. It's not a user issue because when I log in as root, I get the same problem.
Any help would be appreciated.
