Safari held hostage by MacKeeper

Suddenly and randomly, my Safari browsing sessions are getting hijacked by a MacKeeper screen that is impossible to close or navigate away from. It is impossible for me to do anything else in Safari, other than close it completely. There is a button that says "please consider cleaning your Mac from junk" (geez, these fools can't even write English correctly) and an "OK" button which I refuse to click. (See picture below.) The screen comes up suddenly, even without me clicking on anything else. I have already deleted all Safari cookies based on a previous suggestion I read - no success.
I'm sure this must be happening to others. I think Apple should sue MacKeeper for interference with business, because Safari is unfortunately about to lose mine permanently if this malicious MacKeeper screen can't be stopped. Any suggestions?

That's not MacKeeper. It's a malicious JavaScript ad placed by the criminal developer of MacKeeper.
Quit Safari. If it won't quit in the usual way, select
 ▹ Force Quit...
from the menu bar, then select Safari from the list and press return.
Relaunch Safari by holding down the shift  key and clicking its icon in the Dock. That will stop the bad page from reloading automatically. From the menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

  • Are my numbers documents really being held hostage until I pay to download a new version of Numbers?

I'm confused...are my numbers documents really being held hostage until I pay to upgrade for a system that I thought I already had/

Figured it out.  I had downloaded the newest version in November and evidently had both versions in my dock and for some reason it was fine until today when it decided I had to delete the old version off the dock in order for it to work.  All is well.

  • BIG PROBLEM!  volume alias trashed files held hostage please help

I have no idea how this happened but...
somehow the Invisible Alias(s) to all of my internal HD's (except my boot disc)
    were placed in the trash.
I discovered this when I was emptying the trash and a few of the files could not be
trashed I looked at the names and they were my Internal HD volumes
Needless to say this freaked me out
so when looking inside the trash nothing was there.
Doing a terminal command I made all invisible files visible and sure enough
there is a folder in the trash entitled
    "Volumes"
inside of Volumes lives alias(s) for all of my non boot disks
to make matters worse when I go to the HD's which are still visible on my desktop
all of the files give a " cannot be opened" message
The files which are held hostage are for my Doc film I have been working on for
    1.5 years.
I have tried to verify and repair the disks using both Disk Utility and Drive Genius
but they both give a " Disk cannot be unmounted" error
I have not restarted the computer (as I am afraid)
and I don't know what to do
it would appear that the info is there
    just help hostage...
    Please advise

    thanks

I found some help on another forum
and basically I did need to move my volumes out of the trash via
a terminal command that put them at the root level.
I still have no idea how my invisible alias' for my HD's could have ended up there
but at least things seem fine now
thanks for your response by the way.

  • Safari is corrupted by MacKeeper

I am very frustrated with Safari. I got MacKeeper ad page (I don't know how) in Safari few days ago and now, each time I load a legitimate site, I get a page with advertising. I had to delete the page to get to the site that I wanted. I had to delete several Ad pages just to get here in this page. I have Adblock (which was working fine until few days), my settings are to block popup windows. I have deleted everything related to MacKeeper), I have reset Safari but nothing works.
I am quit sure that is a common problem that usera have experienced. Could somebody help me with this extremely frustrating problem? Thanks.

To avoid the problem in the first place, stop doing what you just did: downloading unknown, unnecessary software on the advice of a stranger on the Internet. That approach is not going to save you if you keep up the same behavior.

  • I have Safari and Firefox browsers on my MacBook. When using Safari to access webmail, I will get a MacKeeper Advert on the site, but not when using Firefox. This is consistent.  Can Safari software "block" the MacKeeper Ad, please?

Have tried to identify the site referral, but the opening page and back page of the webmail site have multiple advertisers.  My guess is it would require something tailored to the word or image-word MacKeeper, MACKEEPER and Mac Keeper or MAC KEEPER.

    Try http://safariadblock.com/
It's a Safari extension - so easily switched off or uninstalled. If it doesn't block those ads right off, you can customose it to block most annoyances.

  • I have popups blocked on Safari, but just had MacKeeper popup.  Confused.

How did I receive a MacKeeper popup in Safari when have "block popups" checked in Safari preferences?
    Thank you.

    Hi...
That particular pop up tends to bypass the Safari ad blocker unfortunately.
    Go to   ~/Library/Safari
Move these files to the Trash.
    Downloads.plist
    History.plist
    LastSession.plist
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.

  • Phone number held hostage?  Security and Privacy Risk

Let me preface this by saying I do not own an iPhone.
The previous owner of my phone number, however, was an iPhone user.  Apparently there is a way he could link the number to his Apple ID.   After getting rid of his phone, he never disassociated the number from his Apple ID.
The problem this creates is that now anyone who wants to text me from an iOS device is unable to do so without turning off the iMessage service.  Since my (his) number is registered to an Apple ID, my HTC appears to iMessage as another iOS device and thus texting never goes out to the cellular network... the previous owner is getting any text sent from an iMessage-enabled iPhone meant for me.
Effectively, Apple has created a situation where this person, or any person with an iOS device for that matter, can knowingly or unknowingly manage to hold a celluar number hostage from a texting perspective, creating a security and privacy risk.
Has anyone run into this before and if so what is the recourse?  There has to be some was for Apple to dissociate a number no longer used by a previous user.

Unfortunately, I don't have an iPhone or a support contract so Applecare won't even talk to me without me ponying up $19.  I see no sense in having to pay for a problem I didn't create.

  • Aperture 3 won't export at all: images held hostage

Complaining about Aperture 3 is almost pointless now with the mess the program is obviously in, but I encountered a rather distressing problem I hadn't seen reported yet.
I can't export anything. All of my photos are locked into Aperture. If I select any export option (say, Jpeg 50%) Aperture will start exporting it and never finish. It will sit there for hours if I let it. The file will never export. Activity viewer just shows Aperture attempting to export the image and never finishing. Basically, it's holding my images hostage.
The crashing and hangups I can deal with (for now), but if I can't export a photo the program is literally useless to me. If anybody knows a way to fix this issue, please help.

I have now solved my problem, and it only cost me a day :-|
I had a few corrupted master files. Aperture was running a task to process a lot of pictures, and whenever it was reaching such a corrupted file, the task would hang, and it would not be possible to start other tasks like exporting pictures.
That rebuilding the library helped temporarily was just because after a rebuild Aperture would spend some time updating Places information, before it would start the processing task that would then eventually hang.
I identified and deleted the corrupted pictures, which solved my problem. Finding the pictures was something that I had to do by hand, though.
Since the problem is usually not with the pictures that one is working with at the moment, but with completely unrelated pictures, one possibility is to export the current project as a library and then work with just that library.
So the problem was with corrupted files that I had in my library. Still I think that Aperture should handle a situation like this more gracefully. If a task hangs, it should be possible to learn which picture it is currently working on and to kill the task.

  • Video Held Hostage - How Do I Export from FCP 7 to PC Edit?

I went out of town to shoot part of a project. Please stay with me here...this is a mess!
The TV station that helped me is not yet HD but DID have a Panasonic HD camera that we used to shoot interviews and video captured onto a P-2 card.
Then, because their server could not accept/hold and later export HD video, we exported the P-2 contents onto a Mac with Final Cut Pro. But I don't use Mac or FCP. I need the video onto a hard drive or a thumb drive or a DVD or ANYTHING that I can take back with me and edit on a PC-based system called Edius that also works off the time code that is attached to the video files and we can see in FCP.
Our first idea was to just use FCP to capture and then export the video files onto a portable, external hard drive...but we soon learned the hard drive had to be formatted for Mac. Of course, once we did that, I could not access anything with a PC.
Then, we decided to export as .mov files onto thumb drives. That would have worked except we found the thumb drive would not accept a transfer of any single file greater than 4GB. A couple of interviews are longer, so that didn't help.
So now, I'm going back home with the external hard drive formatted as Mac and all the FCP files loaded onto that. We do have access to a Mac laptop owned by one of my colleagues but here's the question:
Everything else we've shot is all is PC-based. We want to edit the project in PC-based Edius. How can we take the files on the ext hard drive, open them in FCP, and then export the picture, sound with split tracks audio, and the time code , in some fashion onto SOMETHING that a PC can read and we can use to edit? In other words, we want to preserve and export every element that FCP can now see so that we can use those elements to edit in PC.

Edius has added ProRes support quite a while ago if I'm not mistaken. But you will probably need this:

  • Audigy 4 held hostage by Neverwinter Night

I just recently got NWN2 and started playing through it. I noticed a few odd things about the game, especially when it would randomly disable the sound. This I got around by opening the options menu, and it would automatically re-enable sound. Annoying, but it can be fixed easily. Also I noticed it would always force my system into stereo mode, which while annoying as well, I can li've with until I leave the game. But a week ago I wanted to change my system's EAX mode, so I went to the EAX console. I clicked on Enable Audio Effects and... there were no options there. ?I thought that was odd, so I went in to the Edit button and thought I could configure it manually, even though the defaults weren't there. Once I clicked on Add... it said that my card lacked the resources to add any more options. I found that odd, as I used to be able to add 2 or 3 items. So I used the software autoupdate on the site 2 days ago and it brought me up to the newest driver and fixed the issue. Yay!?Today I am running into the same issue. The only thing I've done since the update is play NWN2 and browse online. Since NWN2 has a history of mucking with my sound card, I believe this to be the cause of my problems. The only difference between then and now is that before it showed things like chorus and reverb on the Edit menu, as well as all the additional effects in the Add... menu. Now it does not show anything in either window, or in the Midi and Source tabs. My system still plays sounds, but my EAX settings are not functional anymore.Message Edited by Laramon on 05-25-200706:29 PM

Since I was in a little bit of a hurry and didn't want to look for my CD (could be easy or hard, depending on my luck), I searched my computer for the CTZAPXX.EXE file, and found it. I figured it couldn't hurt to run it, and lo and behold it had an option to rebuild my install. "What the heck?" I thought, "let's try it!"?After it finished, it said that it would have to restart my computer to finish the install, but I knew it didn't replace any system files and so declined the restart. I checked my EAX console, and viola! Everything was back to normal. Everything sounds crisp and clear again, EAX environments working, everything's peachy. My question is this: If I have to do this repeatedly (say, if I play NWN2 again and this happens), will this cause any issues? Or am I correct in my presumption that my system files aren't changing, but some configuration is just getting reset to defaults and thus making things work again, thus being harmless?

  • Focus held hostage by JTable... send help.

    Dear you,
I'm making a gui with a JTable, some textfields, buttons and comboboxes.
I'd like to have one of the buttons get the focus when I open the gui but everytime I end up with the JTable getting the focus.
I've used the requestfocus method everywhere I could fit it, in the main, in, around , before, and after making the button etc. I've used tired using the componentlistener too but didn't have any success.
Anybody got an idea what I can try?
    Cheers.
    Hilldog

You can only request focus on a component that is visible....make sure that you request the focus for the desired button only after the entire gui is visible.

  • Is My Document Held Hostage?

I'm using Pages '09 Version 4.3 (1048). A document I saved and put in a folder now won't open. I get a graphic saying I need a newer version of Pages to open. Must I buy the version? Or is it a free update? How did my document get hijacked into a version I don't even have?

    PeterBreis0807,
Thanks, your response appeared as I sent my reply off. It appears that any document I put into iCloud in the past couple days is now a Pages 5 document. So basically, my documents have been converted for a program I have not chosen to download. I don't remember paying for it??? I am really annoyed about this!!!
After checking my Applications, I found that Pages 5 is indeed in my system (Pages 9 is still there too). I could not delete it as many of my files were inadvertently saved as Pages 5 documents. When I tried to seek out those 'corrupted' (Pages 5) documents to convert them back to Pages '09 4.3, I found I cannot keep the original names of the documents and now have to to save them into a newly renamed folder. And you also mention that we risk damaging the file if we convert it back.....
So I not only have to (try to) convert all my 'shanghai-ed' files back to Pages 9, I have reorganize, and rename them too and risk having them get messed up...Looks like I may have to consider switching to Word. Until then, will I have to avoid using iCloud and go back to using memory sticks???
    This is a nightmare.

  • Flash player held hostage by utility "All My Apps";How do I free it from all my apps program?

I successfully downloaded Adobe Flash Player (I thought) to my hard drive from the Adobe site. However, when I tried to launch it I got a message indicating that it was not on my drive as a default program. I then went and opened "All My Apps program" and there it was, captured by this utility as if it was downloaded from there;"All My Apps" is a utility for free downloads also.It has become very aggressive and launches itself at start-up! I thought to remove it from the start-up program files but it continues and now has hijacked my Adobe, amongst other applications. Please advise a/some solutions! The version of Adobe Flash Player that I installed is:10,3,183,5 running on Windows 7, Internet Explorer 8, 64Bit,with no debugger.

Here's a link to the direct download, which should give you a .exe that you can double click.  Please note though that you need to run the 32 bit version of Internet Explorer with this version, not the 64 bit.
    http://www.adobe.com/go/full_flashplayer_win_ie
Why won't Flash Player work with Internet Explorer 64-bit?
    Thanks,
    Chris
