Hi zenbeetle3,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion forums!
Though your problem is similar to the original poster here it is usually best to start a new topic to get the best and quickest help. Sometimes users will not see your question when imbedded in another topic.
"OS X 4.0 isn't available anymore according to the Apple store online"
That 10.4 Tiger install disks are no longer available through the Apple Store but I believe that you can still call Apple and order the disks for Tiger 10.4.
That said, you will need your system install disks to reinstall Safari version 1.3 which you can then update to version 1.3.2 (v312.6). You will first need to uninstall all vestiges of the Safari 2.0 install first. Safari 2.0 was for Tiger 10.4. You will need to delete the application and associated files for Safari such as the .plist file found in your Home folder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. (I'm not sure why you do not have any .pkg file for Safari in your Reciepts folder. Do a search in finder for any other files for Safari and drag them to the trash as well.
You will need the original disks for your computer or a set of retail Panther install disks. You cannot use another set of install disks from another computer (machine specific disks) or upgrade disks. You may be able to get replacement disks from Apple by calling them with your computers serial number for a small fee. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a set of retail Panther disks from a reseller.
Next, download the Pacifist utility (you will need 10.3.9 at least to download and use this version.
Using Pacifist you can extract Safari from your install disks. You should then reapply the 10.3.9 Combo update.

  • Safari doesnt work and software update wont open

i have os x 10.3.9 and my safari doesnt work anymore, as well as software update. does anybody know how to install it back onto the computer from the os cd? or where can i download safari 1.3 (full version)? the apple web site does not have it, it only has updates.

Try deleting the com.apple.Software update plist from Home/Library/Preferences. Safari can be reinstalled from your install disk. It may be listed under optional installs or custom installs. Safari 1.3 is terribly out of date and will crash on many sites. A better alternative is Camino which has the look and feel of safari and is quite stable.

  • Firmware and Software updates not working

Enjoyed you tests on the YouTube site regarding Vado HD? I have now bought one and it's great as you said, I have a problem though I downloaded the updated firmware and Software from this web address:http://support.creative.com/Products...odName=Vado+HDThe problem I am having is when I run the exe's a window opens up with message: supported Vado?HD is not detected, I have tried running them from both my hard dri've on the computer and also from the hard dri've on the Vado HD? question is have you tried to update Firmware and Soft ware? does it work for you? It might help that I bought my Vado in the USA but I am using it in the United Kingdom and have it set to PAL and Europe, could this be the problem? In any case do you think the update is an important one?. Would like to resolve if possible though. Thanks for you anticipated help

  • The in-app Help Center searches but does not open links.

The in-app help center is not working. Ideas?

The most common reason for this kind of problem is a corrupted plist or cache file.
To fix this, in the Finder, click the Go menu, and choose "Go to Folder"
In the dialog that opens, type   ~/Library/Preferences and press Return.
This will open your user Library folder (which is hidden but can be "permanently" unhidden) and inside it, your Preferences folder.
In the Preferences folder, locate and delete the following:
    com.apple.help.plist
    com.apple.help.plist.lockfile
    com.apple.helpviewer.plist
    com.apple.helpviewer.plist.lockfile
Then go back to the Library folder, locate and open the Caches folder.
In the Caches folder, locate a folder called com.apple.helpd. Inside it delete Cache.db andHelpcache.plist. Do not delete the Generated folder (it contains the Help files for all of your installed apps.)
Below the folder called com.apple.helpd, there is another folder called com.apple.helpviewer. Delete Cache.db from it.
Restart your computer. Help Centre should now work properly.
Things like this happen with different applications (Help Centre is an app) sometimes. You can follow a similar strategy with other applications too. One common one is Microsoft Word, its has similarly named cache and plist files that can get corrupted and can be deleted.
Another way to accomplish all this and more: download (from Macupdate or Versiontracker) a utility called Onyx, and run it. When it starts up (skip the disk and Smart checks at the beginning, for now), click the Cleaning icon. In this section of Onyx you can tell it which caches to delete. I suggest you checkmark everything in System, Users and Fonts. Then restart your computer. Some applications will be slow for a while as they have to rebuild their caches, but doing this can repair a lot of strange behaviour. You can schedule Onyx to run regularly and do its work automatically.
    Good luck.

I just updated to Lion and my Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint will not open because PowerPC applications are no longer supported. I bought this software from Apple and the store installed it when I bought the MAC. What do I do?

Buy version 2011 of MS Office.
Or you can download OpenOffice, LibreOffice or NeoOffice, which all come very close to working with MS files just like MS Office does.
Or iWord, I have heard, you can purchase.

You do not need to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.

    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Safari and Firefox do not open search engines

I have an IMac 8.1, with OS 10.5.8.  Recently, our internet browser programs (safari and firefox) will not open any search engine (google, bing or yahoo).  However, I am able to navigate to web-sites that I manually type in (e.g., www.cnn.com). Does anyone know what the cause, and fix, to this issue?  Also, this behavior did coincide with a recent update to our Intego Antivirus software, but I think this is unrelated.
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks,

Also, this behavior did coincide with a recent update to our Intego Antivirus software, but I think this is unrelated
Maybe not. Most, if not almost all, anti-virus software interferes with OS X and is not required.
    Try installing Glims:
If you want to fix your Google search to a specific Google location, I recommend that you download and install the free plug-in Glims:
    http://www.machangout.com/
which not only does that but much more equally useful stuff! Such as enabling Safari to run full-screen, and more.)
(It adds items to Safari Preferences).
Not only does it already list a number of search engines and regions, but you can also add any other search engine not already listed in Glims by using the method described here:
    http://www.machangout.com/tutorials/addsearchengine
Just enter the name you give the search engine in the name field, and the URL for it in the Query URL field.
