Safari History Deletes After it is viewed

When viewing the Safari History for a specific date, and one clicks on a previously viewed link, that link is deleted and moved to the "last viewed" list.  It is gone form the history of that day.  This is really frustrating; is this by design, or is it a bug?

Go to   ~ / Library / Safari.
Move the History.plist file from the Safari folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
If you are running Lion v10.7:  To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library
If the future when you post for help please tell us which Mac OS X you have installed and which version of Safari. The more details you provide, the easier to assist you. Thanks!

  • My history deletes after one day.

I have "delete after 90 days" ticked and also "clear history when firefox closes is unticked". It seems to delete everything when I turn computer off. I only have the currents day's history there while it's on.

I noticed that everytime i closed the browser, the history of the current day was gone as well, even though the option 'clear History when firefox closes' was turned off.
I manually turned them off in about:config by making them false
Privacy.ClearOnShutdown.Cache etc and switched from 'Use Custom Settings' to 'Remember History'
and it seems that firefox no longer clears the history upon closing. It is strange however that it does not seem to use the settings set in the Tools -> Options -> Privacy Custom settings
This is not a problem for all firefox users in our enterprise though, and for now an isolated incident.
Hope the above helps some people as well.

  • Cannot Reset Safari - History reappears after Quit

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion and I'm seeing some strange behavior with Safari
Every time I Quit and reopen Safari is opens a random page - not my home page
I attempted to "Reset Safari" and all of the book marks reappear after I quit and re-open
I have 2 accounts on my iMac.
This is only happening for 1 of the accounts - If I clear the history on this account it goes away.
    Thanks

Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist  (preferences)
Quit Safari. Now open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar top of your screen click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Click Go the move the  com.apple.Safari.plist    file to the Desktop.
Quit then relaunch Safari. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.
If that didn't help, type this:   ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.

  • Help!  Text Messages and Call History Deleted after Update

My Galaxy S4 updated automatically this morning and my text message history and phone call history are gone.  Is there a way to restore this?  Very frustrated.

        aroth1188,
I understand the importance of retrieving your text message history.  Did you have the Verizon Messaging application installed on the device?  This application may have your messages backed up for you to restore.  Please let us know if you still need further assistance.

  • Is there a relatively easy way to view deleted safari history or pages viewed for an iphone? Browser has been cleared, cookies have been cleared, but I'm wondering if the information is still accessible in my phone somehow?

As I say, internet has been cleared, and under settings, the advanced cookies & history has also been cleared. Is there an easy way of viewing this info again?
Also, the "private browsing" option, is there a way of disabling it or at least having that option password protected?
And what is "web inspector"? Is that something that I can set up on my pc that will monitor iphone activity?
    Thanks!

If doing a restore is the only way, would someone be able to tell me how to do it and whether or not I will have a heck of a time getting all my info & apps back onto my phone afterwards?
    Thanks!
How does this relate to your first post?
Are you talking about restoring as new? or restoring to a backup?
    Why are you restoring?
If it is to recover History  and you think that you have a backup that contains the missing history you could restore to that. Doing this will restore your iPad to the state that it was in at the time of the backup, Apps, Games, etc.
Note that there are PC and Mac applicatons that can read iPad backup files and extract information. Check the internet for these. I do no know if they extract Safari History.

  • History not deleted after rest in safari 7.0.5.

Hi I just reset history by ticking reset safari but nothing has been removed.  Where did I go wrong ?

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Safari/History.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Show Info in Finder (or just Show Info)
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
☞ Does the dialog show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section?
☞ In the General section, is the box labeled Locked checked?
☞ What is the Modified date?
If you don't have read and write access to the item, change the settings as directed here. Note, however, that if one file has wrong access settings, most likely others do as well. If the item is locked, unlock it.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

  • Can I lock or block the ability to delete safari history?

Can I lock or block the ability to delete safari history?

Your child should have their own account. That account can then be restricted with "Parental Controls".
There is a substantial set of "Parental Controls" available, including limiting to ONLY a WhiteList, OR a blanket "adult sites" restriction with or without an additional BlackList of your choosing.
There is also a restriction to whom s/he may send emails and with whom s/he may send instant messages. This is important.
Keep in mind that the REAL enemy on the Internet is not pørn. Pørn may give them a distorted view about how adults deal with sex.
But pørn will not make arrangements to meet your child after school. The REAL enemy on the Internet is unrestricted Chat rooms with strangers.

  • How can I turn off Recently Websites when opening new Safari window? After tapping on the two overlapping boxes on the bottom right of Safari, a new blank window appears with Favorites, but now in iOS 8, recently viewed websites are listed.

How can I turn off Recently Visited Websites when opening new Safari window?
After tapping on the two overlapping boxes on the bottom right of Safari, a new blank window appears with Favorites, but now in iOS 8, recently viewed websites are listed. How can I turn this function off? I do NOT want my new Safari windows to have history displayed of previous websites I visited. I only want my Favorites (on the top) to be displayed. Please help.
Thank you for your time, patience, understanding, kindness, and concern.

Thanks for replying, but that isn't the answer I am looking for.  Also, there is no + sign, UNLESS you do tap the overlapping boxes.
Let me try to ask my question a little more clearly:
When I tap the two overlapping boxes on the lower left (the option to Open New Windows), the new Window that appears will show your Bookmarked FAVORITES. But with my new iPhone 6, and the new iOS 8.0.2, when I tap the two boxes to open a New Window, my Bookmark Favorites show (as they always have and should), but below them, there is a dividing line underneath them, and it says Recently Viewed Websites, and has these websites available to tap.
So my question is, HOW DO I TURN THESE OPTION OFF?
*UPDATE  (10.13.14): Since I have asked this question, I no longer see these Recently Viewed Websites under my Bookmarked Favorites in my new Window tabs. So I hope that Apple fixed it, or somehow it was a mistake, or somehow I changed an Option on my iPhone 6 that stopped this for reoccurring.
Thank you for your help bobseufert! I appreciate your concern, kindness, and the time to try to help. I am grateful.
    Have a blessed day.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Safari 6: Remove History Items After One Day does nothing?

I don't like getting autocompletes from a million past sites, so I clear my history every so often. I prefer to do it manually, but Safari 6 deletes all the favicons--not just of the history but of your bookmarks too! Permanently. So I thought I'd try automatic history clearing instead: After One Day.
But three days later, the History menu still shows the full histories for the past 3 days.
Yet another bug I guess? Is this universal behavior?
I'm on Lion at the moment.

    HI Reuben,
Might be corrupted Safari preference files... try this.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
    Quit Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete all the sub-folders within that one.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete any of these files you have there:
    • Downloads.plist
    • History.plist
    • LastSession.plist

Repair disk permissions...

Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Can NOT delete Safari-History

Safari 4.0 History and Top-Sites can NOT be deleted or removed!

Then ending Safari and restart it - wht happens: the complete hisrtory of yesterday including top-sites is back!
    Whats the problem?

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    See if this helps...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
If that does not help ... Quit Safari
Go to ~/Library/Safari and delete the Downloads/History/ and TopSites.plist files.
Just move those files to the Trash, then relaunch Safari.
Also, since you just updated to 10.6.2, if you didn't do so already, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. • Safari on my iPad. I have an original iPad and since updating to the latest iOS safari forces me to restart the iPad about two to three times a day. Three problems: 1. It just blacks out. 2. The reading list does not delete after the story is read. 3. Ema

Since updating to latest iOS safari fails several times a day.
    1. Just quits.
    2. The items on the reading list will not delete after visited.
    3. The screens goes grey when I go to email a reference.
Is the a solution other the restarting the iPad or is this something apple ought to fix?

    See if the following help.
Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies And Data (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Clearing History with Yosemite Safari without deleting cookies

This is a go around and not a question
Hello, I have found that the only way that I can clear the new Yosemite safari history is to; click on history; select show history; select all and press the delete key.  This clears the history list without clearing the cookies.

Worked for me.  My credit card company would always have to text on my phone to give me a code to me in order for me to get back into their website.  This was a real pain because I am on this site almost daily checking my transactions.  I did what you said and I was able to get back into my credit card website right after.  I am optimistic.
