Safari History not saving recent searches

My Safari is not saving recent history. A few days ago my trackpad wasn't opening programs and now it seems to be fine. Now my preferences change every time I restart. Similarly, every time I reopen Safari, the newest history that shows is a few days old. For a few days now it's shown Friday the 17th (it's Monday now). I cleared the history and when I restart the application the history shows up like as if I never cleared it.
Any help would be great, thanks.

Repair Disk actions from the Install DVD
Did Disk Utility report that the disk, "appears to be ok" ?? The instructions at that link were to check the startup disk for problems, not repair permissions.
I didn't know how else to get to the user accounts
Open System Preferences / Accounts. You can access non admin accounts there.
If you haven't set one up, follow the instructions here.
Creating a new user account: 10.5
The reason we ask that users try another user account is to "test" Safari there. If you have the same "history" problems there with Safari, that's why you need to check the startup disk.

  • Recently migrated to new laptop, backuped with FEBE. Bookmarks, History not saving anything since then

About a month ago I backed up my full profile and bookmarks from my old computer and restored/imported them into the new one using FEBE and the "Import and backup" tab, respectively. Both have the latest (18) version of Firefox. I followed all the steps to restore the old full profile into a new one, and then imported the bookmarks. So far so good.
At the beginning it was all fine, but about a week ago I realised I can't bookmark, nor see any history saved in the corresponding log windows. When I press Ctrl+D I don't get any window asking for confirmation to save the bookmark. When I try to make Firefox Show All History, I get a completely blank page. Nothing at all. I've tried disabling all the extensions to no avail. Still the same problem. I've tried closing and reopening Firefox, restarting the computer, same. I also checked the places.sqlite file, it's fine.
By the way, all the "Ctrl+Shift+B", "Ctrl+D", "Ctrl+Shift+H", "Ctrl+Shift+Del" options are in light grey, as if they had been disabled. On the contrary, the "Show All Bookmarks", "Bookmark This Page", "Show All History" and "Clear Recent History" ones are in black, as normal.
I've tried a few tentative solutions, none has worked so far. Please help. Thank you very much for any comments or observations.

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder.

  • Safari/KeyChain Not Saving Yahoo Mail Login/Password information?

I have a MacBook Pro laptop, Mac OSX Version 10.6.8 and Safari browser Version 5.1.7  Snow Leopard. The problem is ... I recently changed my passwords on my Yahoo Mail accounts.   Safari will not prompt to save my login information for Yahoo Mail. It works with other web sites and worked with yahoo mail before I changed passwords.
My attempts to correct the problem have been unsuccessful. I have tried the following:
    1. Ran Updates
    2. Clicked on Safari > opened Preferences >clicked Auto-Fill all 3 boxes checked
    3. Finder >Applications > utilities > KeyChain     I found Yahoo mail and removed the old ones.
    4. With KeyChain open > Clicked KeyChain Access > Clicked KeyChain First Aid and Verify    No problems found
    5. KeyChain Access>  File > New Password Item>  Typed in KeyChain item Name as https://login.yahoo.com and tried mail.yahoo.com typed in Information and saved.
I have checked the apple sites, the only thing I have found is what I did in #2. the boxes were already checked.
May be I am missing the obvious here. If there is a solution I would appreciate the help. ?

I'm having the exact same issue with Yahoo only on my iMac after changing the password.  I've been trying to fix it since yesterday, and yes I'm updated.  I also tried several fixes for the trojan.  Not luck for me yet.
    Corrections Completed for Safari 5.1.7:
    1- verified all updates completed
    2- deleted cookies for everything
3- deleted keychain access for yahoo account. Interesting is that after deleting cookies and keychain, the username and old password keep populating but it hasn't stored the new password because I never received the prompt to store.

  • ICloud Safari History not syncing across my devices with Yosemite and iOS 8

I have a MacBook Pro with the latest update of Yosemite installed, an iPad 2 with iOS 8.1.1, an iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1.1 and other things seem to be syncing like my bookmarks, reading list, and all other iCloud data as well as iMessages and text messages. But the one thing that does not seem to be syncing is my browsing history in Safari. This is supposed to be a new feature of Yosemite and iOS 8 and it is working for a friend of mine but not me.
How can I fix this? I've tried going into iCloud settings on all three devices and turning off Safari sync and then turning it back on but no luck.

I spoke with Apple support again this weekend. The first support specialist told me that Safari browsing history was not a feature at this time. When I sent a screenshot of the notes of what updated in Safari 8.0.2 on December 11, 2014 from the AppStore, I got transferred to a senior support specialist. They had me try things like log out of icloud and then reset my network settings on my devices. But that unfortunately did not work. My next step which I did not have time to do, is to see if it is my iCloud account by creating a new iCloud account, logging out of iCloud and then resetting my network settings and then logging into iCloud with the new iCloud account and see if Safari history syncs.
I'm not sure what they will do for me if it is my iCloud account because I have so much on that account and have email addresses that I don't want to lose. And if it isn't the iCloud account they said it is probably my devices but I am not sure what they will have me do to try to fix it if it is. Set them up as new? I don't really want to do that, it takes forever to get everything back on the device.

  • Safari is not saving new bookmarks

Safari will not save new bookmarks. What do I do to reset or fix the problem?

I had the same problem and in fact could not even retrieve my old bookmarks . What finally worked was something very basic, please try rebooting your IPad after leaving it off for 30-40 seconds , worked for me . All my original bookmarks are back and can add new ones too now.

  • Safari 6 not saving searches in history.

When using Safari 6 in Mountain Lion, it doesn't seam like Safari is remembering my searches.  If I type something into the address/search bar, click enter, select a link, but when I click back it doesn't go to the search page.  Many times it will go back to the last page I navigated to rather than the search page.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Of course after you asked it too all day for the problem to happen again.  And yes it is in the History.  I typed "arrow fletching" in the address/search bar, results came up, I clicked the first entry, didn't like and clicked back.  I was taken to the youtube video I was looking at before my search.  Using both the track pad swipes and arrow buttons it would just skip between the youtube video, and the first link I clicked.  Right past the actual search page.  When I opened up the history the search was there.  I even clicked the entry and it brought up the search results.  No idea what causes it to skip the search page.

  • Firefox 16.02 has a stored history from 1 month ago. After a crash, Firefoxit reloads this old history, not my recent history. Why? Using WinXP SP3.

Recent history is stored correctly. Yet, when I open Firefox after a crash, recent tabs are not shown, just the tab configuration I had open about one month ago. How do I reset this so Firefox knows my recent tabs?
Previously I used History/Restore Previous session. Now I just changed Firefox to show, my windows and tabs from last time when starting. I then killed my Firefox session and restarted - I still get the tabs from 1 month ago.

    Hi,
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.

  • Desktop & Safari Preferences Not Saved

I just upgraded to an iMac G5. The original system was Tiger 10.4, so I used Software Update to upgrade to 10.4.3. Now I have several problems:
Safari home page doesn't save my preference but reverts to Apple
Desktop appearance preferences don't save. It reverts to the blue default
The Help menu doesn't work! It gives me a blank screen. If I click on the home button, it takes me to the home page for Help, but nothing on it works.
Can anyone please help me with these problems? Also - how do I select Safari as my default browser, since it keeps selected IE?
    Thanks and happy holidays!
    Jill

    Hi, G.
    1. Given the range of problems you are reporting, the first thing I suggest is a general check: run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    2. re: Safari and Desktop preferences: be sure you are the Owner and have Read & Write access to your Home > Library > Preferences folder. and any folders therein.
    3. Re: Help Viewer: See my "Troubleshooting Help Viewer" FAQ for comprehensive advice on fixing issues with Help Viewer, including the issue you mention.
    4. Default browser is set in the Safari > Preferences > General tab.
Before you run a Software Update in the future again, See my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ for some tips that might help prevent these problems or provide you with a fallback position in case an update goes badly.
    Good luck!

  • Preview not saving Recently Opened documents

I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.1) on my Unibody MacBook Pro and my iMac. Ever since upgrading to Snow Leopard, files that I've opened in Preview won't save in the "File > Open Recent" menu. Previously if I opened a file called "Statement.pdf" and then closed it, that file name would appear in the "open recent" menu and I could open it directly from there. Now, nothing saves there. I can open and close dozens of PDFs in Preview and nothing saves. That menu item works fine in MS Word, but not TextEdit. I have deleted the plist files for Preview and TextEdit, but it didn't help at all.
From my limited testing, it seems like this problem only affects Apple applications (but I obviously haven't tested all of my apps). Anyone know how to fix this? It is one of my most frequently used features of Preview.

I've always had that set to None under 10.5. Setting it to some other value does seem to fix it, but it applies universally. Under all OS's prior to 10.6 it did not apply universally.

  • History not saved in the .json file - need help saving history

The backup of the bookmarks AND history does not save the HISTORY. Help me here, why does the bookmarks get backed up, but not the History ?
The experience of clicking on the History menu, then SHOW ALL HISTORY pulls up a Library applet that IMPLIES that the History will be preserved in the backup.
I think there are more than a few people who would use this since migration to a new machine means severing one's HISTORY, unless a backup is available.
    David
    ps, thanks Goliath

Bookmarks are backed up in the JSON file, history isn't.

  • "Safari History Items" in Spotlight

"Safari History Items" show up in my Spotlight searches. This despite the fact that I have "Webpages" unchecked in Spotlight preferences. So, maybe Safari History Items and webpages are two different things? So what does "Webpages" refer to? Mac Help does not contain descriptions of what the categories in Preferences refer to. Also, if turning off Webpages in Spotlight prefs does not remove Safari History Items from Spotlight searches, what does? I like to turn off items in Spotlight that I can just as easily access from other programs, like mail messages in Mail, events in iCal, etc.

PITA isn't it! AFAIK, they're webhistory, but can't be deleted from a search. If you want to report this issue to Apple's engineering, send a bug report or an enhancement request via its Bug Reporter system. To do this, join the Mac Developer Program—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report or enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.
Alternatively, you could delete the files in /Users/"username"/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/History/ every so often and they won't show up.

  • Recent searches will not clear from the search box in Safari

    Hi,
I've been trying to get my recent searches to clear in Safari from the search box at the right corner of the browsing window. So far, I have tried the following:
    1. "Clear recent searches" in the menu that appears when you click on the magnifying glass.
    2. Changing my preferences not to auto fill other forms (after deleting everything that was already listed as auto-fill).
    3. Deleting Google cookies (since I use the Google search in that search box).
    4. Clearing the history.
    5. Emptying the cache.
    6. Resetting Safari entirely.
    7. Throwing .plist files for Google and Safari into the trash (and restarting after all of these).
    8. Completely dumping all Safari files and the application in the trash and then reinstalling Safari.
And yet my first searches from a year and a half ago are still showing up in recent searches. It won't get rid of the initial ones even if it does delete any recent searches from the past few weeks--they just get replaced with whatever I searched when I first got the computer.
Any suggestions? I'm about ready to trash Safari entirely and just go with other browsers exclusively.
    Julie

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
