Safari history window

How can I expand the safari history window to full screen so that all the information is viewable on the screen?  I need to see the time of the sign on.

You pose an interesting question and one that has given me pause from time to time as well. AFAIK there is no way to expand the history window unless I have missed something. I just tried it in another browser - iCab - and I see no way to expand the history window in that one either.

  • Safari history - how to restore from Time Capsule?

    Background...
I couldn't open Safari today (beachballing with no window opening whatsoever), presumed the "com.apple.Safari.plist" file was corrupted so deleted it from "~/Library/Preferences", and restored a copy using Time Machine from my Time Capsule from yesterday before I had the issue. Safari settings from yesterday restored and working.
    However...
My Safari History going back 2 years has deleted to just one month ago! How can I restore these from a previous Time Capsule backup? Is it just "History.plist" file from "~/Library/Safari" that needs to be restored, or also the one titled "HistoryIndex.sk" in the same location, and/or any others?
Also, do I need to restart machine after restoring all files needed, or should the history show immediately after just relaunching Safari?
Note: I tried doing the "History.plist" one only, yet still just get the one month of history showing. This is really urgent as I have sites in my 2 year browsing history I need to get to again!
Help very very gratefully received :-\

Though I am still finding that with circa 2 years worth of history, they may be starting to delete from the back-end after a while; so I presume there may be a theoretical max amount of sites and/or dates Safari will keep in there regardless of setting "Manually" for history deletion.
I doubt there's a maximum size specific to the History plist, but that (or corruption of it) would be the only limitation. And yes, plists do get corrupted with some frequency.
And I don't know, either, what would happen if the plist got to a maximum; whether you'd get a message, or it would drop the oldest entries.
That must be a huge+ file after 2 years! It's a bit surprising that it hasn't gotten corrupted before.
If your browsing history is that important, I'd suggest finding some other way to keep it that long, such as bookmarking the critical sites. That would take much less room (and be less subject to corruption) than the history of every site you've ever visited, every time.
And/or, there might be a 3rd-party app that would help. I don't know of any, but it might be worthwhile to look for one.

  • Deleting Safari History Items with Restrictions Set

    Hi All,
My daughter's iPad mini has restrictions set to 'limit adult content'. One of the apparent benefits of this was the the 'Clear' button on Safari history and 'Private Browsing Mode' were disabled. I was then able to periodically audit the history to check nothing untoward. I could also temporarily remove restrictions to clear the history before re-enabling them.
However, I have just noticed that if you swipe left on an item in history, you are given the option to delete - without removing Restrictions first.
Is this expected behaviour or has a particular update caused this? Is there a setting to prevent history deletion?
    Many Thanks,

You can clear just history on iOS 8, but there's no analogous easy way to do it in Yosemite.
For Yosemite, to clear history manually, you must:
Go to Safari's History -> Show History
Click in the History window and Select All (Command-A or Edit -> Select All)
    Press "Delete"
Note that due to cacheing and the fact that History may now be synced across devices via iCloud, you may need to repeat steps 2 and 3 multiple times before you delete all History items.
For iOS 8, display History, tap "Clear" and choose the option you prefer.

  • Safari history from today shows huge list of sites I did not visit. Is it a virus?

This morning I visited a few sites for buying concert tickets. Now, my Safari history from "Earlier today" shows dozens, maybe hundreds, of sites -- most of them repeats -- that I didn't visit (hotels, limo services, etc.). Does my laptop have a virus? Should I/can I do anything?

Linc is absolutely correct and yet being absolutely and totally misleading here.  Although there are no Mac viruses, there is Mac malware.  See my Mac Virus Guide.*
That said, he's still right that this is not likely to be malware.  Have you closed Safari since this morning?  If not, close any Safari windows (or move them off to the side, or use Exposé to view all of Safari's windows)...  do you see some "pop-unders"?  (These are small windows opened behind all other browser windows and left there to be found when you close the window, and typically contain ads, usually for rather questionable products from unethical companies.)  If so, that's probably the reason...  and the fact that they are repeated may simply be that each time you changed pages on that ticket site, a new page was loaded in the pop-under window.  Check the history for any pop-unders by control-clicking the Back button in that window.  (If the Back button is not visible, choose View -> Show Toolbar.)
If there are no pop-unders, it's hard to say what might have happened without more information.

  • How to recover safari history from time machine?

    Hi guys,
I need your help ... I use time machine for the backup and I cancelled the history of Safari few days ago and now I need to recover it.
Where and how can I find it among the time machine files?
I have already read some suggestions in the web that told me to find it in the user/Library/Safari/History but I can't find any Safary folder in my Library :-(
    Many thanks in advance

Triple-click the text on the line below to the clipboard, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/Safari/History.plist
Quit Safari. Disable Safari synchronization in iCloud, if applicable.
    Select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the Finder menu bar. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window should open with a file named "History.plist" selected. Restore the file from a backup that predates the unwanted changes. If you disabled sync, re-enable it and test.

    Hello, dtharachai.
Thank you for the question.  Here are a couple things you could try to troubleshoot this issue.  You can try to repair the program Apple Software Update by following the first article below.  After you process these steps, attempt to uninstall this program.  If that step does not work, I have included a more in depth troubleshooting article that will help you uninstall program.  Once this is done you should be able to install Safari.

  • Very poor implementation of XMLHttpRequest streaming with Safari for Window

I hope this post reaches Apple engineers. This is critical for us to resolve this. I am a member of the developer network, so if using incident support is necessary, it can be used. Do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. I have implemented a test to compare XMLHttpRequest streaming performance for different browsers. Safari for Windows 5.0.3 had the worst results compared to Chrome and Firefox. Furthermore, I think this problem was introduced after Safari 3. The test consists of a server pushing messages of about 350 bytes to the browser at a rate of about 300/s. Once server pushes 10,000 messages, it closes the connection and browser opens new one repeating the cycle. There were several problems associated with Safari: 1) Safari could not process much more then 300 messages/s, that is quite low. Chrome had no problem processing 1,000. If, for example, 500 m/s was used, Safari would quickly allocate hundreds of meg of memory and crash. 2) Safari starts with about 64MEG of memory allocated. Once the test page is opened, memory quickly climes to 150MEG and as test progresses to >400MEG. Once the connection closes, it drops to 150MEG again. Chrome's memory did not fluctuate at all staying at 32MEG for the same test. 3) CPU was steadily claiming as test progressed and then dropped as connection was reset, creating CPU spikes. It reached about 50% CPU before connection was closed. Chrome's CPU stayed at about 2% all the time. This is the code: Server. Should be run with the latest Java Tomcat 7. • How do I retrieve my cleared safari history on iphone?

How do I retrieve my cleared safari history on iphone? I accidentally clicked clear cookies and data as well, so everything is basically gone and there are very important stuff that I NEED to recover. I tried to do the settings>safari>adavanced>website data, but nothing worked, because since I cleared cookies as well, everything's just gone.

You restore the phone using a backup made before you cleared it. If you don't have a backup from when it was present, then it's gone.

  • Drag File From Safari Download Window to Other Volume - Moves not Copies File - Bug or Feature ?

    Hi,
Appreciate comment on what I thought was unusual Mac OS behavior.  Running Safari 5.1.5, OS 10.6.8.
Mac OSs in my experience copy a file when it is dragged and dropped to another volume/drive. (Let's leave classic desktop out of this.)
It may be the first time I've ever done it in any version of Safari, but just dragged a file directly from the Safari Downloads panel onto another drive's icon - and it appeared to "move" the file from its original download destination to the other drive and not simply copy it onto the other drive.
Didn't look like a copy and standard Finder delete since I didn't see file in the trash, although it was gone from the finder window for the download folder (Desktop in my prefs), and afterwards Safari Download Window magnifying glass icon "can’t show the file “filename” in the Finder because “filename” has moved since you downloaded it." It's reproducible.
Assuming it's not unique to my configuration, is this a bug or "feature" ?
    Thanks.

    HI,
From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the General tab.
You can deselect: Open "safe" files after downloading.

  • Search syntax for Safari history? how to remove items from specific pages?

I'm using Safari 5.0.3 and I prefer keeping the browsing history quite long for accessing contents I had been searching in the net some weeks ago.
However, that way I'm collecting lots of clutter and therefore I'd like to remove selected entries from the history, e. g. from the page where I'm reading daily news etc.
I tried to use the search field (accessible with Cmd-F in the history view) to search for parts of the corresponding web address, e. g. "http://www.heute.de", but I do not only get the history items from that site but many others from google and other pages.
So I'd like to know: is there a search syntax to use the search field, like address=www.heute.de* which enables wild cards, operators like OR/AND etc.?
If not, is there a 3rd party tool which can help or can I use spotlight/the finder to find and remove the unwanted items from the browser history?

    Hi beckmart
there might be ready-made apps or add-ons to do that - but this may help...
quit safari, open Home/Library/Safari/History.plist using PrefSetter
enter the url you want removed in the search box, no need for quotes - say www.google.com
expand the 'web history dates' section at left to see individual results, then select the first one & shift-click the last (don't use select all) to highlight/select all the results - then press the delete key to remove them. Then save the file.
Naturally, a backup copy of history.plist would be wise - but the above seems to work very well.

  • How did old Safari History Items I haven't visited in years appear recently?

I upgraded to Mountain Lion on Saturday October 13th. I then ran software updates, and got everything up to date. I was home alone, and the only thing I went to YouTube for was to get guidance for setting up Facebook and Twitter notifications. That's it. Today, using spotlight, some Safari History Items appeared for October 13th, 2012 for sites I haven't visited in years. However, none of them show up in my Safari Histroy. What gives?
Please help! I'm being accused of looking at inappropriate material when I didn't.
I'm at a loss to explain what really happened. Any concrete help will be greatly appreciated

Triple-click the line below to select it:

    HELP PLEASE
    Very worried!!

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
