Safari hogging CPU and won't run
Sorry for posting here, but I couldn't find the Safar for windows section.
I run WinXP (fully up to date), with 2Gb RAM, (with one 1Gb on my gfx card), 1.8Ghz processor
Having updated to the latest Safari I'm finding that it hogs CPU so much so that when I select a page from the top sites screen my PC locks up and I have to use the application manager to kill Safari.
The same thing happens when I try to go to a website just by typing into the address bar.
Anyone having similar issues, or able to help me out as to how to fix it?
Thanks
Try turning off plug-ins, java, javascript
Empty history, caches, etc or go to where XP would store the application temp files, in Windows Vista/7 that is AppData\Local and \Roaming
Disable or turn off extensions, 3rd party can break with any Safari update
make sure you have current Flash etc
I'd stick to Firefox or something - use NoScript, HTTPS Everywhere, FlashBlock, etc.

My Safari keeps crashing and won't start at all. Im using Yosmite.
What should i do?If you have another browser:
Use free AdwareMedic by clicking “Download ” from here
http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php
Install , open, and run it by clicking “Scan for Adware” button to remove adware.
Once done, quit AdwareMedic by clicking AdwareMedic in the menu bar and selecting
“Quit AdwareMedic”.
or
If you don’t have another browser:
Remove adware manually by following the “HowTo” from Apple.
“Remove Genieo, also known as InstallMac”
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987
Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Turn those off and relaunch Safari again.
Turn those on one by one and test. -
I installed iTunes on my Windows 7 PC and now Internet Explorer crashes and won't run.
I installed iTunes on my Dell PC running Windows 7 and now Internet Explorer crashes and won't run. Are there any known conflicts, or likely issues that may be causing this?
I've rebooted, and the iTunes program seems to operate fine. I used it to upgrade my iPad's OS to 8.1.3.They aren't related and shouldn't affect each other.

I have been a happy user of Firefox for many years. Around last April first I opened Firefox and was offered an update to v 4.42.0.0 which I accepted. Installation seemingly went well. I forget now exactly what happened but the result has been that ever since April 1 I haven’t been able to open the Firefox browser when clicking on the Firefox icon. My computer now was running very slowly. I tried to uninstall Firefox, but a popup told me I couldn’t because Firefox was in use. This confused me because I couldn’t see it being used. Only now I have found that on Task Manager processes that “firefox.exe” was consuming 99 % of the CPU. After removing firefox.exe by clicking End Process my computer ran better. I uninstalled Firefox I had on my computer and installed Firefox 5.0. Unfortunately I have the same problems: Firefox does not open when clicking on the icon, the firefox.exe process consumes 99 % of the CPU and my computer runs slowly.
Born2die! Brilliant. I am a desktop clicker and never knew Firefox had a safe mode.
Thank You!
I was unable to start in safe mode initially. The second time I disabled all of the Add-Ons and she started up just fine. I enabled them one by one hoping to track down the culprit but the problem seems to have gone away.
BTW I am running ver. 3.6.8 (in response to cor-el's earlier post) and
Firefox is in the process of downloading 3.6.10 (which I am starting to think may have been what caused this whole problem to begin with)
Incidentally, whats up with all of the Java Console Add Ons?
I have:
Java Console 6.0.11, Java Console 6.0.13, Java Console 6.0.15
Java Console 6.0.17, Java Console 6.0.20, and Java Console 6.0.21
What are they? Do I need them? Can I uninstall them? Is this due to using Open Office?
Also, .NET Framework 0.0.0 Should I uninstall it? -

Downloaded Logic Pro and won't run
Downloaded Logic Pro and won't run. Keeps telling me couldn't open due to a problem. It says to update my software or reinstall it but it' won't let update it neither.
Bought the software in app store, installed it and it just won't run. I have OS X 10.6.8 just donwgraded from lion and safri wouldn't work either since.
The error window tells me maybe I should re install the program or update my software. I've done both, donwloaded the upgrade (Logic pro 9.1.7) and the install helper keeps telling I can't updrade my software like that. I need to chek for actualization through my computer. But the computer actualization finder "thingy" won't find more softaware to update.
This are the details shown in the error report: (I don't understand any of it)

Mail and safari hogging cpu - corrupt preferences?
I am having a major problem when I run Mail or Safari under Mavericks on my iMac - they hog all the CPU making it hard to do other things unless I keep quitting the Mail Web Content or Safari Web Content processes using Activity Monitor. This also has shown up in other discussions on this board and no one seems to have a resolution to the problem. But the curious thing is that I only have the problem on my older iMac, but on my new MacBook Pro that also runs Mavericks, runs Mail with identical settings (and is accessing the same server) and runs Safari with the same bookmarks there is no problem. So the problem must be with something on my iMac that is causing Mail and Safari to keep running these Web Content processes and taking over the CPU.
In the old days I would have assumed it was a corrupt Preferences file and deleted that, but no one has sugggested this. Is this possible? If so, what should be deleted? While everything had been working fine, this morning I installed the latest update to the operating system and I am back with the same problem (although I am only having Mail Web Content hogging the CPU and not Safari Web content this time). I am posting below some information from the log as you suggested (sorry if it is too much but I don't know what you are looking for). Let me know if there is anything else you need. Thanks for the help LInc.

IChatAgent hogging CPU, now won't log in or even display windows other accounts
iChat just started malfunctioning for me, (possibly coincidentally) right after uninstalling Acrobat Reader 9 and installing Acrobat Reader X. Running OS X 10.6.8.
iChat will now cause the entire computer to lag, and Activity Monitor indicates iChat Agent is hogging the CPU, and continues to until I quit it through Activity Monitor.
I have since
Uninstalled Acrobat Reader X
Deleted all com.apple.iChat and com.apple.iChatAgent plists
Repaired permissions, both from normal booting and off the Snow Leopard DVD.
Reinstalled iChat using the Snow Leopard install disc and then ran the 10.6.8 combo upgrade to bring it into line with current.
Problems have not subsided, and now, when recreating my account logins (AIM and two Jabber accounts), while it will log into my AIM account, it won't even display windows for the two Jabber accounts or Bonjour when I add them. The Window menu doesn't even give the option to bring the Jabber accounts up, and when the Bonjour window is selected, it asks to log in to Bonjour and never does.
And still, iChatAgent goes nuts and has to be forced to quit or my Macbook slows to a crawl.
Help?Hi,
In iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts deselect the options to Use this Account on both your Jabber IDs
Also try and deselect the option to Automatically log in on Launch.
Shut Down iChat then restart it so it only then loads the AIM Login.
Has iChatAgent stopped going crazy in Activity Monitor ?
If it has, delete com.apple.ichat.Jabber.plist
Restart iChat
This will causse the .plist to be rewritten from Defaults and info in the Keychain (It does not hold your Buddy lists - these are held on the server as Jabber IDs only.
Go to the Preferences > Accounts and Select Use this Account on one Jabber ID.
Does it Login and has iChatAgent remained settled in Activity Monitor ?
If one work login the other.
Reset Automatically Login on Launch and restart iChat.
NOTE
All I have really asked is to Delete com.apple.ichat.Jabber.plist and restart iChat.
I have given other instructions to see if iChatAgent is having trouble with AIM's Login and cannot move on.
I have also suggested that you make sure both Jabber IDs cannot Login on iChat Start Ip as steps along the way. (Ity may highlight one ID is more troublesome than the other).
If It seems the AIM Account is sending iChatAgent bananas then Quit iChat then delete com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and then restart iChat.
DON'T Delete all the iChat .plists as we will learn nothing.

IMovie '11 hogs CPU and freezes
I've been importing a few video files in iMovie (from local hard disk, not HD) and it has been taking over 1hr each time... for about 1hr movies.
During each, activity monitor will show that iMovie is taking about 150% of CPU usage... never less than 95%, and I even saw a peak at over 200% (how can something go over 100% is already beyong me, mathematically... but 200%?!)
I should be glad that iMovie is using all the power possible, but I don't get the results. It's incredibly slow, and everything else is freezing. I have trouble using the computer. Even typing in an email or switching between screens is slow... when it happens. I may not be using the most powerful machine there is, but I doubt it's normal behavior.
I have a 3.2GHz processor and 4G of RAM.
I tried closing all other programs (even though activity monitor showed they were not using much CPU), but it didn't change anything.
I noticed today that this huge CPU usage and the worst freeze happens for over 40min while the progression bar of the import barely changed and stuck at about 2-3%... and then the iMovie icon starts jumping and from that point the computer goes back to acting normal and the import finishes in less than 5min.
It's like there is a bug with the process at the beginning of the import... not the import process itself.
Anyone has any idea of what's happening?
Thanks
(When I export small projects -just movie cuts with no effects- it uses a lot of CPU too and slows down the whole computer... but not in as bad a way, and the process clearly goes on normally... and working in iMovie to create projects is usually OK.)That is utter nonsense about 200% explanation! Tools such as TOP in the CLI are unix based tools, and were originally designed for computers that had 1 CPU. The world has evolved A LOT since 1970s. Unfortunately a lot of the geeks who grew up with that technology are as thick headed as religious nuts who opressed women in Saudi Arabia and won't even let them drive! They insist that things should function ONLY THEIR WAY and anything else is nonsense. It is absolutely ridiculous for top to report more than 100% for the CPU utilization even on multi-core machines! When it says 200% CPU Utilization it means that the operating system is over utilizing the CPU, which is impossible, mathematicaly and realistically. The solution is really simple. A few code changes to TOP and it can report 100% for any number of cores or CPUs. But the unix zealots that are responsible for coding things don't want to make these changes, they are stuck in 1970s and refuse to move. We need coders who are not afraid to step up and make the real changes needed.
Try this. Open up iMovie, close any open projects, unhighlight any events that might be highlighted so no clips are shown in the clip viewer nor the preview box. Technically speaking iMovie is doing nothing and shouldn't take up more than 1% of the CPU. Now if you run TOP, it will show iMovie using around 90% of the CPU. How the heck is that good design? It uses 100% of the CPU when it's doing nothing!!! Imagine if iTunes used 100% CPU when it was paused?!?!!? But iTunes is good, it uses only 1% of the CPU while in pause (which I think is still far too much CPU usage since it's doing absolutely nothing, too!).. iMovie is terribly programmed and has serious user interface issues. Like for example. The buttons in the middle for making a clip a favourite, or a star, etc... those buttons are huge and are ALWAYS there.. Even when a clip is not highlighted and when you are editing the project timeline and the buttons are not needed. So much iMovie 11 functionality is ********!! I am shocked that a company as creative as Apple can put out such a bad product!!! But it's the best proudct of it's kind, so we should be thankful!
Here look at this screenshot.. iMovie taking up 100% of the CPU while doing absolutely nothing! -

I downloaded 3.0.2 and installed. the install appeared to work fine, but when I try to run safari, i get no error and it won't run. I've turned off firewall & AV software, etc. I have uninstalled and re-installed. I even tried reinstalling 3.0.1 after uninstalling 3.0.2. all to no avail. any suggestions?
Windows XP Projust a suggestion but have you tried cleaning safari from your registry?? The reason I ask is because if you save bookmarks then uninstall safari and then reinstall it still has your bookmarks, so not all files are being deleted upon uninstall. Don't know if that helps you but its worth a try

Hp g62 freezes and won't run except in safe mode
My hp g62 won't run except in safe mode and when I run normally it freezes. I been reading in the post of the same existing problems and tried the start up test and it failed the short Dsp. What should I do
Hi @Daver1976 ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP G62 Notebook and Short DST failing. Here is a link to restore the BIOS.
You could try safe mode disk defragmenter it will scan your computer. Just click on start and type disk. Select C: and select defragmenter.
Please note remove any and all USB devices, and remove memory cards from the card reader slot. Disconnect all non-essential devices.
Here is a link to do a hardware test. It can let you know if something is failing and the code it gives you would be helpful.
Hope this helps you, please let me know if you receive any errors.
Thanks.

Firefox 3.6.3 & .4 uses 100% CPU and won't always close or open
Firefox intermittently uses 100% of CPU and I have to manually turn off the computer. Firefox also does not start or finiosh correctly, the process is alive and I have to use Task Manager to end the process In the meantime I have installed IE7, as I cannot access internet banking with Firefox. Very disappointing as I have ben an enthusiastic user and promoter of FF.
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== After upgrading to 3.6.3, and is no better with 3.6.4, despite deleting all add-onsI also have this problem which has been getting worse with recent successive updates of Firefox. As a long-time user and advocate, I am about ready to look for an alternative browser. Firefox will not close and exit properly, requiring direct cancellation through Task Manager; starts up very slowly (often 1 to 2 minutes); and frequently locks up the CPU with 100% of cycles while doing NOTHING; offers to restart crashed sessions, but cannot recover and reload those sessions; will not operate correctly while any other application accesses the internet, like uTorrent. Firefox is set to delete cookies, etc. whenever the session closes, sqlite database is vacuumed regularly, CCleaner regularly wipes remaining accretions, and disk is defragged. Currently running 3.5.5 but will NOT upgrade until this problem is solved since later builds report the same problems. I know several other users who have experienced the same problem and I can no longer automatically recommend Firefox to users and clients. Is anybody paying any attention to this problem? What is being done to address this fault? Why is there no response to the original poster? Is this really a support forum or just a way to preoccupy and distract the users who suffer this malfunction? Wireless 54Mbps connection. No Adobe Flash, QuickTime, MS Silverlight, etc. installed on this machine. Firefox 3.5.5 with the following add-ons:
Aardvark 3.0
Adblock Plus 1.2.1
Adblock Plus: Element Hiding Helper 1.0.6
Free Download Manager plugin 1.3.4
Highlighter 0.1.4
MR Tech Toolkit 6.0.4
repagination 2006.4.5.1
Save Complete 1.0.1
Session Manager 0.6.8.3
Tab Mix Plus 0.3.8.4
Unhide Passwords 1.2.5.1
User Agent Switcher 0.7.2
Thanks for any help or suggestions. -

Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
☞ high ambient temperature
☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That behavior may be normal for some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display. -
My 2009 iMac freezes and won't run more than one application at a time - how can I fix this?
Help! My iMac has been getting worse regarding freezing, especially when trying to open iPhoto. It will load slowly, and then I get the pinwheel of death for ever, until I shutdown and try over again. It usually takes several tries, and usually overnight. How can I resolve this issue?
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long. -
