Safari icon changed or modified

Hi,
I use Safari mainly to consult a genealogy site which is quite unusable with Firefox. Yesterday, I was unable to open Safari, neither from the Dock nor from the Apps subfolder where it stands.
Normally, I had put the application in a subfolder "Internet" within "Applications". Looking inside this folder, I found:
- a file "Safari", 45 kB in size, in the subfolder,
- a file Safari, version .1.8, 12,8 MB in size in the "Apps" folder.
I could open the app clicking on the second one.
Both share a strange icon:
I know this one but I'm unable to find to which software it corresponds.
I'm also a little bit anxious about a safety risk. I checked for viruses with ClamXav, for trojans with MacScan, for corrupted prefernces with Preferential Treatment. I repaired permissions. Nothing!
I will be grateful for any information and/or correction about this problem.
Note: iMac 21" Core i5 2,5 GHz, OS X (10.6.8), RAM 4 GB, HD 500GB

After a backup, I trashed Safari with AppDelete and downloaded the .dmg as Alberto said. Unable to install : "a more recent version of Safari is present on your hard disk".
That's because the WebKit framework that goes with v5.1.8 is still installed. AppDelete will not get rid of it because it has no idea it belongs to Safari. All it does is search for "safari" and delete those, no different than you can do with a good search utility. There are some instructions on how to 5.1.7, but I see no reason to do so in your case.
My only problem is that the icon is still the same as above, not the typical compass
Indeed, as far as "my" icon is still wrong, I can't say that the question is solved.
The icon is the generic icon for all Applications, so it's only a cosmetic issue. You might be able to solve it with a safe-boot to rebuild all the system cache files. If that doesn't do it then probably a rebuild of the launch system database is in order, but if it were me I would ignore it as it will fix itself sooner or later.

Safari icon changed and cannot launch safari

    Try these things first:
    1) See if the Safari icon in the Dock is linked to the Safari application. Command-click on it and see if it shows Safari in the Applications folder. If not, the alias on the Dock is corrupted, or it is no longer pointing to where Safari is (hopefully, Safari is still in the Applications folder). If Safari is in the Applications folder, but the Dock icon did not properly find it, remove the old icon from the Dock and drag Safari onto the Dock to establish a fresh icon and link to the Application. If Safari cannot be found, do a Spotlight search for it, or restore it from a Time Machine backup (if you have one). If not, download it and reinstall it.
    2) If you can locate Safari from the Dock and it still won't launch, then trash Safari's preference file. From your Finder, Option-click on the Go menu and scroll to select the Library folder. Open the Preferences folder and locate the com.apple.Safari.plist file. Send this to the Trash and try to relaunch Safari.
    Hope this helps!

  • Safari 3.0.4 crashes after Safari Icon 2.7 mods

After unsuccessfully attempting to change the Brushed Metal appearance of Safari using Safari Icon v2.7 the browser keeps crashing upon launch.
I had changed the icons, but couldn't change the overall appearance. The settings to do that were faded. I poked around the preference docs for Safari Icon and got the idea (probably erroneously) that if I changed the Safari version number in Safari Icon's Nibs folder from 2.0.4 to 3.0.4 that would enable the appearance settings.
It did. So I changed the appearance to Aqua. And from that point on Safari kept crashing. I went back into the Nibs folder for Safari Icon and changed the browsers version number back to 2.0.4. Safari still keeps crashing.
I ran Onyx and Tech Tool Platinum, still keeps crashing but maybe hangs on 5-10 seconds longer than before the maintenance utilities were run.
I also trashed Safari Icon. Maybe that was an error on my part, but it's gone. Safari still keeps crashing upon launch.
Nothing else seems to be affected on my system.
I logged in as another user and Safari crashes for that user as well.
Do I reinstall from the installation disks? Is Safari necessary for anything critical? (I don't mean for browsing, as in benefits of Safari vs Camino vs et al. I mean for using Software Update, that sort of thing).

    Thank you for any assistance.

    Hi
by 'hosed' I meant corrupted, somethings been changed inside the application package that's causing this problem.
In theory, Sure, if the input managers were fine before, then likely it's nothing to do with them.... just an observation really, that you have a few installed, most of which operate on all user accounts.
I guess pacifist will have detailed instructions with it, dunno, ( other than you'd get the update, open it with Pacifist & choose the Safari application ) I never used it myself; but have a search on this forum. There have been some detailed posts on re-installing Safari this way.
Unpkg- you download the appropriate update for 10.4.11 ( intel or ppc processor, depending on what mac... ), I believe the Delta ( not combo) update contains the full Safari application, if you're trying to save bandwidth. Then you open the pkg with UnPkg - it'll create a folder on the desktop that contains every file that the update would install. Inside this, in the applications folder, you should see Safari. Trash your existing version, then copy the new one into the main Applications folder, then repair disk permissions via disk utility.
I don't know offhand if any security updates since 10.4.11 have modified Safari for Tiger ( there were some small changes for Leopard ) so, it's possible that any such updates will need re-applying.
I can't speedily find any info on your safari Icon changing application, but I'm assuming it changes just the Safari application package & no other files. If there's a possibility it modifies other things, I'd suggest you download the 'combo' updater mentioned above, since you might need it .

  • Safari icon in Dock changed

My Safari Dock icon under Leopard spontaneously (as far as I can tell) changed to a folder icon (actually the Download folder icon). I dragged the icon out of the Dock to make it disappear. Then I attempted to put the real Safari clock icon in the Dock. When the clock icon got to the Dock, the icon changed to an envelope with a sheet of paper in it. I don't know which application uses that. I can't even find that envelope icon anywhere on my iMac.
Command I on Safari shows the normal Safari clock icon as still being present.
Trying Safari as another user produced the normal Safari clock icon. I could drag the Safari clock icon from the Dock, and then replace it by dragging the Safari application icon to the dock.
    What should I try next?

The Safari Clock icon does not stay in the dock on my iMac, even when I select "Keep in Dock" in the menu. Each time when I close Safari, the icon disappears after a few seconds. I have just changed to a new iMac, transferred all my content to the brand new machine, and it is still happening. My Dock preferences are synchronised across to my other machines, but in those machines the dock acts normally. Is this a corrupt preference issue? If I trash my preferences, what else goes?

  • All my html documents replaced with Safari Icon!

With 10.6's safari all my html document icons were changed.
The creator application icon has been changed to Safari and NOW All open in Safari. (I presume because of the .html)
I want them, LIKE BEFORE to open as text in the _application that created the html document_.
When I want to view it as a webpage, I will drag it to Safari myself.
HOW do I fix this so that each Document Opens with the Original APP ??????
    Thanks
    -Sandy

No luck. It did change back all my APWKS html files to safari Icons which meant changing them again
So I verified/fixed permissions. Got two suspicious replies (dont know if it means anything)
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Here might be a clue. Whenever I had trouble before (10.5) it was either one of the two below that I learned to live with. But nothing like what's happening now.
    1) APLWKS crashed using spell check. (So I saved first) On rebooting APLWKS it worked fine
    2) Font Selection was slow in going down the list.

  • How do I stop Safari from Changing Visited Links Color's?

I recently switched from Firefox to Safari since I find Safari much faster. I do have one annoyance though. When I click a link (especially in forums) and revisit a page with that link, Safari is changing the link's color. Firefox did this too, it changed visited links from blue to purple.
I would like to set it somehow so Safari doesn't change the color of visited links at all. Is this possible? When I googled I saw many different posts about using custom made CSS style sheets. I just want to get an 'official' or more relevant answer since many opf those posts were years old. I'm using the latest Safari.
    Thanks!

AFAIK, it's not possible with preferences, per se. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7183566 and http://www.yourhtmlsource.com/stylesheets/csslinks.html for possible hints. You might also investigate modifying one of Safari's css files, inside the Safari app—left as an exercise, with no guarantees that you won't cripple something.

  • Is there a way to hide the Safari icon?

I have some good web filtering software for kids, but it doesn't work with Safari. So I want to remove the Safari icon from their accounts (without making a seriously restricted account.) All I want to do is hide the icon, not remove it because the web filter software will likely include Safari in the near future.
What I don't want to do, so please don't suggest it: I don't want to use the built in parental controls for Safari because it doesn't work like I want it to. I also don't want to set up a seriously restricted account for the kids - I want them to have "Standard" user privileges.
    Suggestions?

If you really want to do that, be aware that Safari would be invisible to everyone, not just the kids. Even so, you'd need to login as the Admin user and use a tool like Super Get Info to change the visibility setting for Safari. After that's done, you would need to remove the Safari icon from the Dock of each account for your kids; otherwise they'd still be able to run Safari, even if they can't find it.

  • Setting up Private Browsing window to open up when Safari icon is clicked on first.

Setting up Private Browsing window to open up when only Safari icon is clicked on first, and remains after shut down.

    Hi css,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like to click on Safari in your Dock and have it open a new Safari Window. As you said in your post, clicking on Safari in the Dock brings the Safari window forward. There are a couple of possibilities to help resolve this situation. You can control-click (right click if enabled) on Safari in your Dock which will give you the option to open a new window. You can also click and hold on Safari, otherwise known as Press, to display these same options.

  • Safari Icon Suddenly Generic?

Out of the blue my Safari icon is now the generic Application icon. Application works fine, just the icon. Could not find any similar posts on the matter. I recently (a few days ago) installed the latest Security update.
Anyone else having this issue? Better fix than hunting down a Safari icon and replacing the icon image?

    Hi again, Jeremy,
You are welcome, sorry not much help.
Okay good Safari is in apps. folder, some folks do keep apps. in other places. : )
Did you install anything new, just prior to Safari's icon changing to the generic app icon?
What size is your Safari app? Mine is 21.MB on disk, this is on Tiger 10.4.8
    ppc.
Have you tried doing a Disk repair, with a restart from the Tiger install disk 1 cd/dvd, holding the "c"?
Try logging into another user account or test account,is the Safari icon there?
If it isn't I would suggest your reinstall the update that you have running on said computer, you have both, 10.4.1 & 10.4.8 showing in your specs & two different machines therefore I am not clear which is having the issue.
There is a Safari compass icon in the Resources folder.
Applications, highlight Safari, from the Actions menu,
click Show Package Contents/Contents/Resources/ I have tried to copy it so that I could send it to you if you liked, but without much success,
Good luck, please keep us posted.

  • Where is the Safari icon located.

I have found a bunch of custom icons for OSX on line and have started using them. I replaced the trash can empty and full, some of the icons in the finder sidebar etc. through system/library/coreservices. I backed up to original folders and corrected disk permissions afterward. Everything is working fine. But I can't find all of the icons I would like to replace.
Where is the safari icon for example? I looked in dock, finder and coretypes bundle. I can't seem to locate it. Can anyone help?

    Hi Jason,
When it comes to changing icons in the system or in applications, the possibility of creating some system problem jumps. As an alternative, I use CandyBar, which simplifies this process immensely.

  • I got a iphone yesterday and today I was rearranging the icons and now I can't find my camera or safari icon

I got a iphone yesterday and today I was rearranging the icons and now I can't find my camera or safari icon any ideas what happen?

They can't be deleted so one of 3 things happened:
    1) You moved them into folders or to different pages. Reset the home screen layout if you can't find them.  Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout.
    2) You set up restrictions on them. Settings>General>restrictions.
    3) You added an Exchange account for which the administrator has specifically prohibited the use of Internet browsers and cameras on phones.
The only thing you can do in case 3 is remove the Exchange account and appeal to your IT department to change the policy.

  • The Safari icon has renamed itself Safia

When I run the mouse over the icons in the dock, the name of the Safari icon appears as 'safia'. It also appears as this when I look in the Applications Folder. What has happened? How do I change it back to Safari?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3)

    Bridget C-
Click the application icon once so that it is highlighted. Wait a couple of seconds and click in the text area of the icon.
The area should change to an editable text box. You can rename their.
It is quite possible that in the course of working with your Mac that icon somehow became selected and some other text was inadvertently typed in.

  • Deleted Safari Icon by mistake

While deleting some apps that I was not using, I deleted the Safari Icon by mistake. How do I get this back on my Iphone? I know people have said its not possible, but I did do it,its gone.

Safari can not be deleted from the iPhone. There are two possibilities
    1. You moved it to another space. Use your finger and swipe! that should change the space. Sometimes IconServices or other background services may cause the icon not to appear so restart the phone before you restore!
    2. You are an advance user and jailbroke your iPhone and using 3rd party un official tools, you were able to delete Safari. If this is the case then you'll need to speak to people in that community for support on how to get Safari back. If you did Jailbreak your phone then it is possible that a simple restore will not be able to fix your problem because a restore may end up bricking your device.

  • Safari icon

Downloaded and installed security update 2013-001 for os10.6.8. This had Safari 5.1.8 bundled with it. The application works but the icon in the Dock and in the Application folder is not the usual Safari compass but an unattractive generic application icon. Doesn't really matter, just not pretty to look at in Dock. Delete and start using Firefox? Anyone else found this? Apple's subtle way of saying move on?

    Hi
No that didn't work. The icon remained stubbonly the same no matter where I dragged it.
However I have managed (don't ask me how) to change the icon so it is now the Preview application icon. I was following the suggestions set out below having downloaded a safari icon (or something very similar to it). Double clicked on the icon and this opened in Preview but when I tried to copy and paste the paste option on the safari Get Info page that was greyedout. So I tried draging and dropping and there was a green plus sign over the offending "not safari" icon but when I dropped the Preview icon appeared in the top left hand corner not the downloaded icon.
Oh.. I was logged on as the Owner and had read and write permissions
