Safari Ignores Downloads
If I click a link to start downloading files (even the ones on Apple's website), the file doesn't start, the page simply reloads. This is irritating because I have to Ctrl-click the link and select Save File to Desktop, and even more irritating for websites that make you click a push-button to download files. Anyone else having this problem?
Hi Dave,
You probably had SpeedDownload installed and didn't use the uninstaller to remove it.
Try downloading the installer from yazsoft.com using the ctrl-click method and re-run the installer (you'll have an option to Uninstall).

It's strange, and Safari has been doing this since the day I got my Mac, even after upgrading the OS twice through Panther and Tiger. When I go on a site (including Apple's) and click a link to a non-browser file such as a dmg, zip, sit, or app, Safari will simply do me the favor of reloading the page without starting the download. The only way I can save something is by Control-clicking on the link and selecting "Save Linked File As..." The part that drives me nuts is when websites use an auto-downloading script or a button that doesn't directly link to the file, which just causes the page to reload. Now I can't download the new iTunes because the page does nothing other than reload when I click the "Download" Aqua button.
Quit Safari if it's running. Move the file
Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
in your home folder to the Desktop. Test again. If downloading now works as expected, then that's where the problem lies. Otherwise, it's still somewhere in your Safari settings, but I wouldn't know where. You'd have to ask the "Speed Downloader" developer what to do next. -
Safari ignores installed certificates?
Hello
I'm a support technician working at AO Foundation in Switzerland, a non-profit organization researching bone fracture healing methods. Recently, we opened a surgery reference area of our website which requires the user to download and install security certificates for access. I've been having trouble with security certificates under Safari, having gone thru the following these steps:
1) goto www.aofoundation.org/subscribe/
2) Complete the subscription process
3) Using the username & password received in the emails, go to www.aofoundation.org/downloadcenter and download a security certificate
4) Install downloaded certificate to the keychain by double-clicking it.
5) goto www.aofoundation.org/surgery/ and click the blue "Enter AO Surgery" button
6) Because you've already installed the certificate, click the blue "Go!" button
Theoretically, that's all that's needed to make the certificate work, right?
Under Firefox, I have to import it to FFox's own, internal certificate store, and then I can enter the surgery reference without any problems. But I seem to be missing something in Safari? Why does Safari ignore the installed certificates?
Keychain mentions the certificate is from an untrusted source, and yet even setting it to "Always trust", Safari still ignores it. Or rather, it doesn't even let me select any security certificate, I just get rerouted to the "You have no certificate installed" web page.
Help?Problem still exist as of today...I updated my Safari 5.1 on Friday (7/22/11) and I'm also having this problem with no help on fixing it....

Why is the contents of Safari's downloads folder different than the actual folder?
Why is the contents of Safari's downloads folder different than the actual folder that resides in my users folder?
Problem is if I delete that .plist I'll delete those downloads. I'm still able to launch those downloads from that location so that tells that file is probably not corrupted. I need to be able to located that folder and transfer the downloads from it before I do anything like this. So that begs the question, where is that folder located? When I do a folder search I'm taken to a Downloads folder, but it's not the one that is showing up from within Safari as it's contents are too different.

Hi,
We have an application built using HTMl 5 and Javascript running on IPad2, iOS5.1 Safari 5.1.
When a file url is clicked instead of asking for Save or Open or Cancel options, the file gets opened on IPad by default.
Is this default behaviour which cannot be changed or can it be configured to ask user preference?
When we try to download a file(.pvw file -> a model file) in the above application, safari throws "Download failed" error.
Please suggest what needs to be done.
Regards,
PramodSafari on an iPad in general does not allow downloading of files. That's a safety precaution in the iOS SDK to keep unauthorized content off of iOS devices. Safari will open from the web site file types that it can handle, but direct downloading isn't normal behavior, and I don't believe the behavior can be changed, though you can try asking in the developer forum, either here or the one to which you have access as a member of Apple's iOS developer program.

How can I download and read a SWF file on IPad 2? The message returned is that Safari cannot download that file
SWF files are flash files, which are not supported on the iPad : http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/
If you want to play the file then the iSwifter or Skyfire browser apps might work (they don't work on all flash sites) but you won't be able to download it -
Safari automatically downloads "Unknown" file
In the last few days I have found that Safari automatically downloads files called "Unknown". It sometimes happens when I am using another application so it doesn't seem related to something that I have just done. Also I find that Safari is DEAD slow with some pages or part of the content of some pages.
Here's what I have tried so far. I have deleted all the plist files in both the user account and the library folder in the system folder. I have zapped the PRAM, rebuilt permissions and restarted in safe mode. I have Resert Safari and Emptied the Cache under the Safari menu. I have also updated my antivirus and run it. Nothing has helped.
The sites that load slowly do not behave the same way in Firefox, but I would like to use Safari for most of these most of the time. Any suggestions of a cure would be most welcome.Hi Linc.

Safari cannot download Windows Media Player
When I try to download Windows Media Player for Mac on my iTouch the message says Safari cannot download it. Is there a solution to this problem?
The answer is in your question. The iPod touch (not iTouch) is not a Mac.
To play Microsoft's proprietary WMV format you need to convert them on your desktop computer to one of the many open standards the iPod touch can play. -
Set safari to download pdfs rather than try to use Adobe Reader plugin?
Some websites try to open a pdf file in Safari using the Adobe Reader plugin. I don't have this plugin (and don't want to), and I would like Safari to download the pdf rather than trying to use the Adobe Reader plugin. This option exists in Firefox - is there any way to set Safari to do the same thing?
On my machine, OPTION-clicking a link, downloads it or the PDF that it points to. Alternatively, load the PDF and then OPTION-click on the URL and hit the enter key. Sorry, but that's all I have to offer.

Safari 8 downloads a blank.html file issue
Hi all...
I am new to web developing in jsp. I am facing a issue that safari 8 downloads automatically a blank.html file. while safari 7 does not has this isssue.
what may be the reason for this ?
should i configure safari settings or coding problem ?
What to do to fix this issue..
thanx in advanceWhile you can try switching Off Safari - Preferences - Extensions; and clearing data for that sitein Safari - Preferences - Privacy... it's often a problem with the site coding or server, and can't be fixed at your end.
Of course, if this happens everywhere - still try without extensions, and also test in a new or Guest user account. -
Possible reset safari and downloads window bug
I have noticed, at different times on different macs...
Reset safari, open the downloads window and the items in there do not clear out. In fact, it takes two reset Safari's to clear them out. Now, I have them set to download to desktop and not the downloads folder. I can reproduce 1 out of 3 times.
Safari 3.1.2 and Safari 3.2
Message was edited by: powerbook1701I have checked on multiple computers and even the Apple Retail store, the issue continues to happen, but there is no rhyme or reason what the trigger is:
I have noticed with Safari 3.2 and 3.2.1 that when resetting Safari, the downloads window does not always clear out. Upon an additional reset, the window does clear out.
If the downloads window was open, then you close it, reset safari, and then reopen the downloads window, whatever was there is still there (until you reset again). -
Automatically changing Safari's downloads folder
I want to have a automator script which can automatically change Safari's downloads folder. How should i do?
If you don't mind using GUI Scripting, and provided Safari is already open, the following script should do the trick:
set downloadsPath to "/POSIX/path/of/destination/folder"
tell application "Safari" to activate
tell application "System Events" to tell process "Safari"
click menu item "Preferences…" of menu 1 of menu bar item "Safari" of menu bar 1
click button "General" of toolbar 1 of window 1
tell window "General"
click pop up button 5 of group 1 of group 1 -- "Save downloaded files to:"
key code 125 -- down arrow
keystroke return -- "Other…"
keystroke downloadsPath & return
delay 1
tell sheet 1
if exists static text "The folder can’t be found." of sheet 1 then
display dialog "This folder can't be found:" & return & downloadsPath buttons {"OK"} default button 1 with icon 1 giving up after 10
click button "Cancel" of sheet 1
click button "Cancel"
else
click button "Select"
end if
end tell
click button 1 -- close the window
end tell
end tell
Tested under OS X 10.9 “Mavericks” with version 7.0 (9537.71) of Safari.

My customers who use iOS cannot download the video files I send by Adobe Send "Safari cannot download this type of file" is the report they get. I have tried created a zip file of the clip but get the same result. Please help
This error seems to point at a problem not directly related to the encoding. The message might be misleading but I read "Safari cannot download this type of file" as relating to the file type - the end of the name (perhaps MIME type setup, but let's start with the file type).
But... some web searching finds others say that iOS cannot download files AT ALL because it has no filing system you can access. Clearly (?) you just want it to show the movie, but I don't know any more than that.
Perhaps someone else has worked in this area. Also worth trying suitable iOS forum.
