Safari in Lion hijacked by malware

I hope someone can help...
I have the new Lion operating system and was in Safari this morning trying to find a game for my son to play. I clicked on a site and I got a pop up window from www.theconsumerwinner.com telling me to answer a survey...only option was to click ok. I did not...I force quit Safari instead. When I restarted Safari the website and popup comes back and has basically hijacked my safari. I cannot get into any of Safari's menu options...even help.
I went into the Safari folder and deleted the history from today, but it's still there. How can I get rid of this? I love my Safari...luckily I have Firefox installed for a work program, so I'm using it for now.  I want my Safari back though...
Please help.
Thank you!

You have acquired either a flash cookie or a tracker cookie.
For those who do not know about Flash cookies, more properly referred to as Local Shared Objects (LSO), they operate in a similar way to regular browser cookies but are stored outside the purview of your browser, meaning you cannot delete them from within your browser, whether Safari, Firefox, Opera or any other. Typically they are issued from sites or 3rd party sites that contain Adobe Flash content. Since virtually all internet advertising is delivered in Flash, Google/Doubleclick and all other internet advertising companies are sure to be tracking your browsing behavior with Flash cookies. These companies can see you traverse the Internet as you come upon the plethora of sites that contain their embedded advertising. Check out the Wikipedia entry here.
In Mac OS X they are stored in the following location:
/User’s Home Folder/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/#SharedObjects
The settings for the Flash cookies are stored in:
/User’s Home Folder/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/sys
In OS X Local Shared Objects, or Flash Cookies, are appended with a .sol suffix. Flush deletes all the Flash cookies (.sol) and their settings.
Flush can be downloaded from this website:
http://machacks.tv/2009/01/27/flushapp-flash-cookie-removal-tool-for-os-x/
If you want to retain certain Flash cookies but not others, the excellent add-on for Safari called SafariCookies  does just that:
http://www.sweetpproductions.com/safaricookies/index.htm
which not only does that but much more equally useful stuff!
This article covers the issue in more depth:
http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/08/you-deleted-your-cookies-think-again/
Flash cookies are also known as 'Zombie Cookies' and are used by a number of firms, including Hulu, MTV, and Myspace. Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at the internet security firm Sophos, told BBC News that the source of the trouble was Adobe Flash itself, which he called "one of the weirdest programs on the planet".
"I think it's highly unlikely that these large companies have abused Flash cookies - which are different from browser cookies - with malicious intent," he said.
"I think it's much more likely that the vast majority of users are simply oblivious to the bizarre way in which Adobe allows them to configure the software."
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-10787882
And a more recent article:

For other tracker cookies:
If you allow a Trojan to be installed, the user's DNS records can be modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's  (that's you!)  DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.
You can read more about how, for example, the OSX/DNSChanger Trojan works (by falsely suggesting extra codecs are required for Quicktime) here:
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/trojan_osx_dnschanger.shtml
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X.  It's available here:
http://macscan.securemac.com/
First update the MacScan malware definitions before scanning. You can also contact their support team for any additional support - [email protected] [/b]
The DNSChanger Removal Tool detects and removes spyware targeting Mac OS X and allows users to check to see if the trojan has been installed on their computer; if it has, the software helps to identify and remove the offending file. After a system reboot, the users' DNS records will be repaired.
(Note that a 30 day trial version of MacScan can be downloaded free of charge from:
http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
and this can perform a complete scan of your entire hard disk. After 30 days free trial the cost is $29.99. The full version permits you to scan selected files and folders only, as well as the entire hard disk. It will detect (and delete if you ask it to) all 'tracker cookies' that switch you to web sites you did not want to go to.)
VIRUSES
No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download for Tiger and Leopard (check with them about Lion) from:
http://www.clamxav.com/
The new version for Snow Leopard is available here:
http://www.clamxav.com/index.php?page=v2beta
Note: ClamAV adds a new user group to your Mac. That makes it a little more difficult to remove than some apps. You’ll find an uninstaller link in ClamXav’s FAQ page online.
If you are already using ClamXav: please ensure that you have installed all recent  Apple Security Updates  and that your version of ClamXav is the latest available.
Do not install Norton Anti-Virus on a Mac as it can seriously damage your operating system. Norton Anti-Virus is not compatible with Apple OS X.

  • Help iMac w/Lion. Virus/malware Safari can't shutdown. Got pop up saying I won a prize. Did not select OK. Have to force shutdown. On restart of Safari get same pop up. Locks up Safari. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    PiCked up a virus/malware please help me get rid of it. While browsing with Safari got pop up saying I won a prize. Click OK to find out what I won. Did not click Ok, but cannot close Safari without using forced shutdown. Powering down computer and restarting then selecting Safari brings up same prize window. Just installed Trend Microsoftware for Mac. It's scanning now. Don't think it will work.
    If I open another on same iMac everything seems ok.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    I am also running Lion and had the same problem: a persistent popup on top of a half-opened Safari window saying that I had won a prize and should click OK to claim it.  If I forced Safari to quit, the same pages and popup menu would appear when I then reopened Safari.  From what I can tell, the problem results simply from the fact that Safari in Lion defaults to auto-reopening web pages that were open when Safari last quit, including those suspicious pages that may have prompted the user to force-quit Safari in the first place.  I solved the problem this way:
    (1)  After force-quitting Safari, I went to my user Library folder and found the Saved Application State folder within.  I then found the folder for Safari (com.apple.Safari.savedState), opened it and deleted its contents.  Now the next time I open Safari, there will be no pages to auto-reopen.
    (2)  Since this problem could happen again, I decided to disable the auto-reopen feature in Safari.  I did this by highlighting the "com.apple.Safari.savedState" file and choosing the File-->Get Info command, and then in the Get Info box, I turned on the Locked checkbox.  This prevents Safari from adding any files to this folder.
    This solution has worked well for me, and it has the advantage of not requiring the user to reset Safari.  It also preserves Lion's auto-reopen feature for all other applications.
    I need to give credit to David Pogue for the information I used to solve this problem.  He describes this procedure on page 169 of his book, Mac OSX Lion, the missing manual.

  • Search engine hijacked by Yahoo in Safari Mountain Lion?

    I installed Mountain Lion these past days and since then, my Safari browser is hijacked by Yahoo, although I did set Google as my default search engine, and even changed DNS to google (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). I am at a loss - what is happening?  Help?

    In Preferences>General what is your default Search Engine?

  • Stuck in a limbo: can't install Safari or Lion/Mountain Lion, can't access App Store

    If someone would take up this challenge and attempt to solve it with me, I would appreciate it! I have troubleshooted for 2 days now to no avail.
    This is what happened:
    1) I accidentally installed Safari 6.0, even if I have Lion 10.7. which doesn't run the new version
    2) This disabled my use of Safari and my access to App Store
    3) With a combination of AppDelete + Pacifist I tried deleting all Safari files, and re-installing old Safari 5.4 from scratch.
    I rebooted, repaired permissions and did a disk check.
    4) Rebooted again, tried to open the newly installed Safari, but it gives an error:
    "Check with the developer to make sure Safari works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X."
    5) At this point I thought to revert back to a previous point in Time Machine. Unfortunately all the points in Time Machine somehow showed Safari 6.0 (even a month-old points), so reverting back to an old point didn't help.
    6) I try logging into AppStore to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but I can't do that, since it needs Safari to run and I don't have a Safari anymore!
    7) Now I tried re-installing Lion from restart + cmd+R, and it asked for Apple ID to start the installation.
    --> At this point I am getting desperate, as this computer was purchased second-hand, so I don't have the Apple ID used to install Lion!
    8) I try searching for Apple's official support, but obviously my warranty has expired, besides it's based in another country so they can only call cellphones from that country!
    So I cannot enter App Store; reinstall Safari; reinstall Lion; or upgrade to Mountain Lion. I have no access to Apple official support. I currently work in a developing country with limited access to any MAC support.
    I don't know what to try anymore!
    - How can I enter App Store without Safari?
    - How can I reinstall Lion without the original Apple ID?
    - How can I upgrade to Mountain Lion without App Store?
    I'm STUCK! Please help!!

    Anyone?
    I finally managed to download the newest combo update and installed it successfully!
    However Safari still doesn't open. It keeps saying the following:
    Check with the developer to make sure Safari works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.
    I also finally got access to App Store: but the download of Mountain Lion doesn't complete, because it seems to need Safari.
    So I'm still stuck with the two issues:
    i) Safari doesn't work, and I can't get it to work unless I can reinstall/upgrade the OS.
    ii) I can't upgrade the OS without Safari!
    --- unless someone knows a way to install Lion/Mountain Lion _without_ Safari??
    Thanks for all your help!

  • Safari on Lion will not allow popup windows to return data to the website

    I have a web-based application that uses pop-up windows to capture certain user changes. One example is the user changing the default number of hours to a new specific number. The problem is that with Safari on Lion, the data does not get returned to the website.
    I have tested this function with Windows and IE, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari with no problem. I have tested it with my Macbook system running Snow Leopard and Safari, with no problem. I have tested it with my Macbook and Firefox with no problem. I've used the Firefox Firebug debugging tool with no errors found.
    Debugging has proven that the data is being captured by the popup, and it is assigned to the returnValue. However, the website never receives that data - the object is empty. This error is happening with every popup I've tried in the system covering a wide range of uses.
    The only thing I have found that fixes/masks the problem is turning on the Developer menu in Safari, and then starting Javascript debugging. In that mode the problem does not occur, but I can't find any errors to fix.
    It seems as if there is some change in Lion that affects the security of popup windows and returned data, but an internet search turns up no similar complaints. I have been able to reproduce the error on 3 different Macs running Lion.
    I have verified that pop-up windows are not blocked, and java and javascript are enabled. I've also compared the settings on my system with the failing systems and find no Safari settings that make any difference. I've tried all the simple things like system reboots, safari resets, and cookie cleaning.
    I would appreciate any ideas or information that might help. I am an experienced developer but relatively new to Mac's.
    Here is the code that calls the popup and waits for the returned data :
    if (window.showModalDialog)
    retVal = window.showModalDialog(templink, "name", "dialogWidth:275px;dialogHeight:350px");
    else
    retVal = window.open(templink, "name", "height=350, width=275,toolbar=no, directories=no, status=no, menubar=no, scrollbars=no,resizable=no, modal=yes");
    if (retVal == 'cancel')
    return;
    else {
    frmnewhrs.lid.value = tempid;
    frmnewhrs.newhrs.value = retVal;
    frmnewhrs.submit(); }
    This is the code in the popup that captures and sends the new data :
    function preSaveCheck() {
    var tempstr = document.getElementById("newhrs").value;
    if (tempstr.length > 0) {
    window.returnValue = tempstr;
    window.close();}

  • HT5275 how to reinstall safari for lion?

    Please advise how can i go about reinstalling safari?

    SINdustries wrote:
    An alternative is to install ana application called pacifist which has a free trial
    It can allow you to install small portions of the os
    To use Pacifist, the OP will need to download the OSX, anyway, to access the .dmg installer. If that is the case, then the safest and most reliable course of action is to just reinstall the entire system, considering the complexity of Safari and it's integration with so many other parts of the OSX.

  • Why is there no Passwords tab in my Safari Mountain Lion Preferences?

    I need to remove a stored password from my laptop, but there is no Passwords tab in my Safari Mountain Lion Preferences window. How can I get past this roadblock?

    Do you have some other software installed, like a password manager, that is removing the Passwords tab?
    Take a look in Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access. Your password may be stored in there. Look in the Login Keychain, Category: Passwords. You can just select the password and delete it.
    You could reinstall Safari perhaps to restore the Passwords tab. I don't think you can just download Safari by itself, though. You'd have to reinstall Mountain Lion. Alternatively there's an app called Pacifist that will let you extract the Safari installer package from the ML installer. CharlesSoft — software you always wished someone would write

  • Safari in Lion has stopped working.

    Safari in Lion has stopped working.  All my peers that have lion have been having this problem, and those that still have Snow Leopard have no issues with their Safari. The loading animation only gets to about as far as "http://" and just hangs there. It says it's connected to the internet (i've tried with both wi-fi and ethernet). I have no idea what happened, as it had been working for a solid month before this.
    I'm sadly writing this message from the firefox browser .
    In the past to get it to start working again (for a short period of time), i would:
    Emtpy Cache in Safari
    Reset Safari
    Remove my Wi-Fi remembered internets
    Delete Wi-fi
    Reboot the computer
    Re-add Wifi
    Reconnect to the internet
    it would still hang for a bit, but eventually it would load a page.
    If anyone has any advise, it's much appreciated.

    Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
    These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
    Below are four lines of text in monospaced type, which are actually shell commands -- little programs. They’re harmless, but they must be used exactly as given in order to work. Some of the lines will probably wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
    Step 1
    Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the window, and press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
    Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
    This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
    Step 4
    ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Sta}* 2> /dev/null
    Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address will appear in the output of the above command. Change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
    Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Safari in Lion

    I noticed several features with Safari in Lion which I don't particularly like.
    First, I would prefer the program to open with the home page which I can set myself and not with the last page that was open in the previous session. Perhaps one can choose this manually, however, I haven't discovered how.
    Second, leafing through the past history pages using the mouse sounds very nice. However, when you use Safari for internet banking which undoubtedly many people do, it is not so handy if Safari also keeps the page with your site identification, PW etc. in memory. Maybe one can prevent this by clicking on private browsing prior to the internet banking session, but one doen't always remember this.
    Any comments?

    Go to:  System Preferences / General.
    Deselect:  Restore windows when quitting and re-opeing apps" under Number of recent items.
    it is not so handy if Safari also keeps the page with your site identification, PW etc. in memory. Maybe one can prevent this by clicking on private browsing prior to the internet banking session, but one doen't always remember this.
    Website passwords are stored in Keychain Access /Applications/Utilities not "memory" therefore the page will remain open until you log out of that site.
