Safari in Rosetta

I am trying to watch videos on a news web-site:
http://www.ctv.ca.
They inform me that for those using Intel Macs, at this time they do not support Flip4Mac, and recommend that we run Safari in Rosetta mode and use Windows Media Player 9.
Any ideas how I might do this?
Thanks in advance.

Just a follow-up. Since learning about how to run Safari in Rosetta mode - so simple really, just ctrl click on the Safari icon in the Application folder, Get Info, and as pointed out, check and de-select the Rosetta option as needed. I just want to add, that if some of you are also finding it difficult to run some Windows videos, ie .wmv - with Safari and Intel Macs, in addition to changing Safari to Roseta mode, you also need to de-select the Flip4Mac option from Systems Preferences to run those videos. Only then will Windows Media Player launch (using Rosetta Safari) and play the .wmv clips that are embedded in the webpage - and currently not viewable with Flip4Mac.
It's worked for me on countless sites I was having difficulty with before.
Thanks everyone.

  • Safari and Rosetta no longer needed

With the update today to OS X 10.5.7 and Safari 3.2.2 I don't have to run Safari through Rosetta in order to play YouTube flicks. Now unfortunately my Plantronics Bluetooth headset no longer works with Safari. I can system sounds and I can play iTunes songs just fine, but anything that comes from Safari is muted. I set system preference to use built in speakers and I can hear all audio from Safari. I have reset the headset and restarted my Mac. Very odd.

    Hi Robert
Repair permissions via Disk Utility, then restart the system to see if that makes a difference. Otherwise, contact Plantronics about updating their Bluetooth driver.

  • Can't view WMP files in Safari on Intel machine unless in Rosetta??

I am trying to set up my parent's new Mac Mini w/ a core Solo Intel chip. They want to be able to view videos on CNN, but the only way i've been able to get them to work is by downloading the WM9 player, then launching Safari under Rosetta, which is noticably slower than if it were running natively. Is there any other way to get streamed WMP files to work on an Intel machine using Safari? Should I just get Firefox set up on their comp. for compatibility?

    Hi,
Windows Media Player and Flip4Mac are both PowerPC only at the moment, so yes you'll have to use Rosetta for the time being.
Windows Media Player never will be available for the Mac Intel platform (Microsoft no longer develop it) but Flip4Mac are working on porting their plugin 'sometime soon'.

  • Windows Media Player in Safari - Rosetta

There have been some videos embedded in web-sites that I have not been able to view with Safari. They are Windows Media videos that most often I have been able to access with Flip4Mac - a plug-in that translates the .wmv into QuickTime.
I now find that certain Windows videos can only be viewed when I disable Flip4Mac and go back to using Windows Media Player v. 9. However in order to do that, I have to use Safari in its Rosetta mode.
I've figured out how to do this. It's quite easy really. In case anyone is wondering: Go to Applications and Control Click on the Safari icon there. Open Get Information and check the Rosetta option. Re-start your computer and voilá - the video can now be rendered correctly. (Remember to disable Flip4Mac via System Preferences first.)
OK - but why is all this necessary? Can someone explain why doing this actually works, and how come some Windows media-made video clips are fine with the Flip4Mac conversion to QuickTime whereas others require this Safari Rosetta - WMP v.9 procedure? Moreover, besides trial and error, is there a way of knowing which method to use, when I see a link to a Windows Media video link in a web-site?
    Thanks in advance,
    ~ john

  • Safari issues "fixed" running under Rosetta

I have found that unless you run Safari under Rosetta there are compatability problems with some sites. In particular, I was unable to load images of my old computer to that auction site when running native but it works fine if I run Safari under Rosetta. I read elsewhere in this forum that there are Flash issues as well.
I have reported this to Apple so let's hope we get a new version or an OS update soon!

    viking79,
Choose Get Info for the Safari app. Click the
    checkbox "Open using Rosetta."
    Jim R.
Is there a way I can make a shortcut for each method of opening Safari? So I could click one icon to launch it in Rosetta, and another to launch it native? Or it would be nice if I could just right click on the icon in the Dock and select Rosetta or native.
    Thanks

  • QT 7.2(no video) via Safari, on Intel Mac. Unchecking Rosetta worked for me

I had similiar problems after the QT upgrade on my Intel iMac when trying to play official trailers on the Mac site, using the Safari browser: no video (white screen), only audio. (Firefox worked however).
Turns out that I was running Safari under Rosetta. Closing Safari and using Finder > Applications, select Safari and ctrl-click to 'Get Info', uncheck 'Open using Rosetta' ... now the videos work again.

    Are you having problems using other browsers? If not;

  • Safari, Rosetta, and media players

This is my first mac and first post on the forum, so forgive me if this has all been covered ad nauseum. I had been using my girlfriend's PowerBook G4, and wanted to get one for myself. The guy at CompUSA sold me on the MacBook Pro. First thing I noticed was the heat thing. As long as this isn't going to affect the life of the machine, I'm not worried about it. My main concern right now is that I can't listen to music on MySpace or stream video using Windows Media Player like I could on the PowerBook. I tried opening Safari using Rosetta, and it did not help matters. Sounds like this method is working for many of you. Anyone have an idea why this isn't working for me? Is anyone aware of the hot temps causing any problems other than discomfort?
    Isaac
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

As for the temperature, it shouldn't affect the life of any components. The Core Duo is specified for safe operation up to 100 °C (212 Fahrenheit). Of course, the fans will cool it down way before it reaches that level... but it seems like Apple chose to keep the MBP quiet and rather put up with some heat. It's a tough choice... some people will always complain, either because the fans run too much or because the machine is running too hot.
I can't really help you with Windows Media Player because I don't have it installed. But I can tell you it's been discontinued and won't be updated for the Intel Macs. Instead, there's a new QuickTime plugin that Microsoft officially recommends for playing Windows Media on the Mac:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx
This Flip4Mac plugin will not yet work with Intel-based Macs, but should be updated soon.

  • DivX "for Mac" and Safari -- anyone get it to work on Snow Leopard?

Pardon me for the length of this post --  it's just a very involved question to which DivX has no answers, and I've literally wasted this entire week trying to get the so-called DivX "Bundle for Mac" to work, with absolutely no joy.
    27" iMac Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz, 12 GB RAM, OS X 10.6.7
    Safari (v. 5.0.5 [6533.21.1])
    Safari Extensions:
    DivX HiQ 2.1.1.94
    DivX Plus Web Player HTML5 <video> 2.1.1.94
As anyone who has used YouTube in the past year or however long this option has been available, many videos, under the regular YouTube control bar at the bottom of the video window, have an additional option: DivX HiQ, with a blue "play" button with black arrow, and in white text on black, the message "Press play for higher quality video." EVERY SINGLE time, until yesterday (about which more anon) I've selected DivX HiQ, the YouTube screen turns into the gray DivX Plus player window for a few seconds, sometimes I get a brief "Buffering…" message (sometimes not)* (see below), then a window pops up telling me "DivX Plus Web Player could not download the video, please check your internet connection." (screen shots on request).
I have DL'd AND installed -- several times over the past few days -- DivX for Mac, version 7.3 (right up-to-date as of 11-30-10 -- great support for the Mac OS), with little or no success or noticeable results. Finally, yesterday, it somehow (I thought) installed correctly: at least instead of nothing whatsoever happening after the install, this time I was whisked magically away to <<http://www.divx.com/en/software/download/installed/mac?os=mac>> where I was rather breathlessly informed "Congratulations! You can now enjoy the highest quality digital video | divx.com." Well, this was something new -- this was the first time I'd ever gotten this far. Then I was shown many movies, promising new marvels:
The first movie informed me "You have successfully installed DivX software." This WAS something new. Then it told me about the "DivX Plus Web Player… Now Featuring: DivX HiQ… Boost web video quality and performance… … Look for the DivX HiQ Button on your favorite video sites… see better quality and performance with a simple click… Try it out on your favorite sites… YouTube. Vimeo. And more.
Then I played the NEXT movie, all about the DivX Plus Player, and here I TRULY saw something I'd never seen before: *a DivX Plus Player window, that actually said " Connecting… Buffering: … " and then -- mirabile dictu! -- an actual video began to play, and actually continued to play, with no stops, fits, or error windows, right up until the end. This WAS something new under the sun. It continued, extolling the manifold virtues of "DivX to go," which was of no use to me. The next video was about the DivX Plus Codec Pack, and the video told me about the wonderful things DivX could do in Windows 7, if I was brain-dead enough to USE Windows 7. Useless info, but that video, too, opened up the way I believe the *HiQ videos are supposed to open up in YouTube, for example: "Connecting… Buffering: …," and then actually opening and playing. BTW, I hate to sound like a troglodytic Luddite, but I have no idea what "MKV" video is.
The final video, which ALSO opened up the way I believe the *HiQ videos are supposed to open up in YouTube, for example: "Connecting… Buffering: …," spoke to me about the manifold joys of DivX Plus converter, which ALSO requires the DivX Player application, and since the DivX Player application (v.7.2 (build 10_0_0_184, Copyright © 2006-2009 DivX, Inc.), which, I was given to understand, was actually a PART of the DivX software I had finally "successfully installed" (according to divx.com's delirious greeting), has never worked, none of what all these videos talked about was going to do me much good. HOW has it never worked, you ask? It has never worked in this way: I click on the DivX Player app icon, the DivX Player window opens, and the Mac OS beach ball spins merrily away, and spins, and spins, and spins -- at this point, I usually go to the kitchen for another cup of the strengthening coffee and the hopefully headache-reducing ibuprofen. When I come back, the beach ball is still spinning, so, resignedly, I go to the "Force Quit" command, where, invariably, I see the message "DivX Player not responding," and, resignedly, I force quit it. Again. This scenario has occurred without variation every single time I've tried to open the DivX Player application. It has never actually opened correctly, it has always shown up in the "Force Quit" window with the comment "DivX Player not responding," and I have always had to Force Quit it.
Now Here's what may be termed the icing on the cake: fairly well buried in the "DivX for Mac" install package is a pdf "read me." Among many other fables is THIS whopper:
"For online video tutorials visit the following URL in your web browser: http://go.divx.com/mac/tutorials"
I did just that, and though the link works, there IS no page on the DivX site for "Mac tutorials." When you click on the link, you get redirected to "http://support.divx.com/faq/view/supportFAQen100/video_tutorials_main." Except for a video tutorial under "DivX Converter_ -- for which I have no use -- entitled "How To Edit Your DivX Converter for Mac Output Settings," and these two: "How To Export To DivX In Final Cut Pro for Mac," and "How To Export To DivX Using QuickTime On A Mac" -- neither of which do me the slightest bit of good, since A) I don't use, nor can I afford, Final Cut Pro, and B) what good would it to to export ANYTHING to DivX when the DivX Player for Mac does not, and has never, done anything but hang until Force Quitted?
A brief digression on that very subject of "hanging:" there's a little section in the obscure "DivX for Mac" pdf that reads:
    "5. Known issues
Network connection is lost during download
A lost network connection in the middle of a download may hang the DivX Player For Mac. If this occurs, you may 'Force Quit' the DivX Player For Mac by simultaneously clicking command-option-escape and selecting the application from the list or by right-clicking the icon in the dock and selecting 'Force Quit.' You may then resume the download by re-launching the DivX Player, selecting 'Download Manager” from the File menu and clicking 'Resume.'"
Wonderful advice, if I could ever get to the point where I was actually downloading something, but since MY particular edition of DivX Player for Mac saves me all that bother by hanging immediately upon launch, DivX has very kindly saved me the trouble of having to go through all that "Force Quit" - "Resume" nonsense. Of course, I never get to download anything or use the DivX Player on YouTube or anywhere else, so that's a bit of a downside.
So back to the putative "Mac tutorials" on the non-existent "http://go.divx.com/mac/tutorials" page: other than the three totally non-germane examples I cited above, there is nothing that I can find on the re-direct page (http://support.divx.com/faq/view/supportFAQen100/video_tutorials_main) that is the least concerned with the usage or behavior of any component of DivX on a Macintosh computer. That's certainly not uncommon, but for a company that purports to sell products that actually work on the Mac OS X platform, EVERYTHING about the DivX site is so totally Windows-centric, one would be inclined to believe that DivX is not even aware the Mac OS X platform exists. For example, here's the list of tutorials under "DivX 101 - Learn How" on the page that, according to the DivX for Mac Read Me, was supposed to solve all my problems with running DivX on a Mac:
    Featured Video Tutorials
How to register your PS3 for DivX VOD playback
How do I make DivX player my default video player?
How to register your DivX Certified device with the DivX Plus Player
How to stream DivX Plus HD (MKV) files to your Xbox 360
How to use the DivX Plus Converter
    Featured Text Guides
DivX Plus Converter for Windows User Guide
DivX Plus Player for Windows User Guide
    DivX Codec 5.x User Guide
DivX Codec 6 and Virtual Dub Guide
It's wonderful that DivX has tutorials dealing with XBox360 and PS3, but the Mac seems to have been lost in the shuffle -- I think, from an aesthetic point, the guy in the sideways hat and the emphasis on animé and "blow 'em up" games in what few tutorials are actually there pretty much sums up DivX's idea of their market focus. Maybe they're right, but if this "free" version, that so far I have not been able to get to work as advertised on my 27" iMac, is supposed to entice any Mac user into forking over even the piddling $20.00 for the "Pro" version, the "free" version isn't DivX any "gotta have it" favors.
Now for the final mystery: I have two Safari -- v5.0.5 (6533.21.1) -- extensions from DivX:
    1. DivX HiQ 2.1.1.94, which is supposed to allow you to watch videos on YouTube, Vimeo, etc. in the DivX Player for Mac, but refuses to work when enabled: EVERY SINGLE time I've selected DivX HiQ, the YouTube screen turns into the gray DivX player window for a few seconds, then an error window pops up that says "DivX Plus Web Player could not download the video, please check your internet connection."
    2. DivX Plus Web Player HTML5 <video> 2.1.1.94, the little blurb in the Safari Extensions window for which says "Increase performance and video formats for your HTML5 <video>
Clicking on the "by DivX, Inc." link in the Safari Extensions window of either of these extensions takes me to http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus/web-player
"High-quality video shouldn’t stop at your browser. DivX Plus® Web Player gives you the best web video performance around, even on sites using Flash®. The latest feature, DivX HiQ™ beta, lets you replace the default Flash player on popular sites for improved performance. Of course you can still watch stunning DivX® and DivX Plus HD (MKV) videos right in your browser, and even enjoy MKV features like multiple audio tracks, subtitles and 5.1 channel AAC audio."
That's all well and good, but, not when it doesn't work. I don't know what the story is with these Safari Extensions: a manual (unfortunately the only way you can do it), category by category search of Apple's "Safari Extensions Gallery" turns up NO information about these extensions, neither does -- as far as I can tell -- a search of the DivX site. Am I supposed to use BOTH extensions? Neither? One or the other? Which? So far, if I use them, I get the HiQ option in YouTube (and elsewhere), but when I click on it, I get the error message above, and the window reverts to the usual plain old YouTube window. If I disable the DivX Safari extensions, I don't even get the HiQ option.
Has ANYONE gotten the DivX for Mac Bundle v7.1, or even the DivX Plus Web Player for Mac, v2.1.1, to actually work on a Mac running OS X 10.6.7?
If so, PLEASE tell me how you got it to work.
I'd gladly for over the 20 bucks for this product if it actually worked, but not until it does.
    Bart Brown

Well, I can start banging my head against the brick wall again.
"I have never knowingly come across Divx in any shape or form. YouTube uses either Flash or HTML5."

    Hi,
Thanks for your answer. After some more experimenting, i finally got it to work ... However, not every embedded DivX movie will play.
I just deleted another codec in the Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime folder. (One of the codecs mentioned on http://perian.org/#support was still in the folder). Before I had only deleted the files whose name has "DivX" in it.
I did NOT install the DivX Web Player plugin.
Now some DivX videos play, some don't... So maybe I should re-install the DivX Web Plugin? But the Web Plugin never worked for me ... If I re-install it, won't I go back to where I started?

It could be that your previous DivX player was out of date.
As Perian says, you need both.
First, I certainly wish you (or my search of Apple Discussions, which, inexplicably, did not turn up this discussion) had referred me to this discussion before -- it would have saved a LOT of time.
Now, to your reply to Philippe Pauwels:  "As Perian says, you need both." Both WHAT, exactly?
From the initial release of Perian 0.5, September 29, 2006, to the latest release, Perian 1.2.2 - Tuesday, April 13, 2011, there is not a single mention of DivX in the entire 2006 to 2011 version history. The only information on the Perian support page regarding DivX is the paragraph that states, in part, "Please consider removing obsolete QuickTime Components: ...DivX, DivX Decoder..."
Can you please tell me what you mean by "Perian says, you need both," in regard to putative DivX Extensions, Plug-Ins, Components, whatever?
Finally, on July 12, 2009, you posted, in a reply to martin Alper, a list of  "the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear/play pretty much everything that the net can throw at you." Taking into consideration that it's 2 years later and most versions have newer updates -- including Mac OS X itself -- some items are no longer among us, and some NEW ones have shown up. could you please update or comment on this list, for the benefit of all sufferers?
    Thank you very much,
    Bart Brown
Your list as of July 12, 2009, taking into consideration your wise caveat that "nothing in life carries a guarantee!:
The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3 and 4, QT 7.4.x, 7.5.x and 7.6 and OS 10.4.11 and 10.5.7.
Download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 11.1 for Mac from:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15540
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlas h
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.
It is suggested that you first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
You should also ensure that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2009-001 (and for Tiger only, 2009-002). (N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back, as the lack of this plug-in can cause QT content in some widgets to cease functioning.
And there is an additional kid on the block: SilverLight. Microsoft has created their own version of what a replacement for Flash could be. You can read more about it here:
    http://silverlight.net/
So, if you go to any sites that have been designed for this new Silverlight stuff, you can download the plug-in from here (but make certain that you are downloading SilverLight v.1.0 for OS X (10.4.8 upwards) if you are using a PPC Mac. Version 2 only works with Intel Macs:
    http://silverlight.net/GetStarted/
Recommendation: Close all applications before installing any of the above, repair permissions, reboot, and repair permissions again.
    Thanks again
    Bart Brown
PS: You wrote "It is a pity you chose a camera that produces video in that format! As you have discovered it is incompatible with iMovie." Uhh, I don't know where this question came from -- more stray copying and pasting, perhaps? I have no camera, and am not trying to do anything pertinent to this discussion with iMovie.

  • Safari 4.0.4 constantly crashing

    Dear Forum,
I am a new owner of a refurbished MacBook. After many problems I erased and reloaded the operating system and applications. I also went through downloading all software updates, including Safari 4.0.4. Unfortunately Safari keeps unexpectedly quitting and sometimes I cannot even get it to load. Sometimes I am invited to send a report, other times not, and sometimes the entire laptop tells me I must force quit. Perhaps several problems?

    Hi,
Not running Safari in Rosetta should do the trick but you did experience a kernel panic. If the MacBook continues to freeze or crash and this is a refurbished Mac running an older Mac OS X version of Tiger (10.4.x) ...
Kernel Panics can be caused by many things bad RAM (memory) being one. You can test RAM using a 3rd party software called MemTest You need MemTest for "Mac OS X 10.4 Intel"
If you have the install disc that came with the MacBook, you can boot from that disc and run the Disk Utiity application to check the startup disk for errors.
Insert install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from the install disc, try booting in Safe Mode
    What is Safe Mode
Boot using a new user account. Try using that account to open applications for a bit and see if the problems persists. If they do, then the problem is system wide not just isolated to your Home Folder.
Since you just purchased the MacBook, and it's refurbished... if you purchased it from Apple you have a one year limited warranty. If necessary, take it to the nearest Apple store or Apple certified repair provider.

  • Safari not loading .css files / hanging page load

A bit of an odd one this...
I'm having a few issues a couple of websites in that the page takes an age to load - and when (if) it does, the CSS file hasn't loaded, so the page is unstyled.
One page is http://www.liverpoolfc.tv - the main page and the advert page before it both have the same issue.
From the activity report, this is because the browser is not completing the download of the file http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/lfc.css - although this will download fine if I download the file not as a part of the site.
The (Safari) activity report shows that the page's .css file is stalling, in this case at 8.0KB out of 8.6KB - this is consistent each time I try to load the page.
The problem occurrs in both Safari (3.2.1) and Firefox (3.0.6) on Mac OS X 10.5.6. It also happens with the current version of WebKit and Camino. The computer is up to date on all other relevant patches, including the recent Security Update, Java Update 3 and Flash.
I'm experiencing this problem with another website, again with the .css file not loading.
Similarly, I have two computers (both the same versions of software) and the problem is consistent between them.
    What I've tried so far...
    - resetting Safari
    - deleting the cookies manually
    - using a proxy server
    - starting Safari in Rosetta
    - using a copy of Safari without any user preferences (via the System Admin login)
None of these have made a difference. However, given that this is a problem across Safari, Firefox etc., I suspect this must be an issue in a shared component.
    Any thoughts?

    1. From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
    2. From the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Delete All. Close the preference pane. Test.
    3. From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Test.

  • Audio playback not working in Safari

I just upgraded from a PB 15" to MacBook Pro and noticed that on several websites (in Safari) the audio clips will not play although the progress bar shows them playing -- I have to option click them to download them before they are audiable. This occurs in QT as well as Windows Media type files so far .... and can be experienced on myspace.com clips as well -- I don't which file format those are in ....
I am pretty experienced with Macs by now and have no insight into the fix and/or probable cause.
MacBook Pro 1.83 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I'm having the same problem. Opening Safari with Rosetta does not help. The MySpace player is still not working. It worked perfectly on the PB. I also can no longer view video clips using Windows Media Player on my MBP. I thought the Rosetta thing was supposed to allow you to do **** like you could on the PB. I'm getting frustrated and no one so far has been able to help me.

  • Safari won't fully load websites

Safari is having many and varied moments of not fully loading webpages. It is also happening to a lesser degree on other browsers (firefox, camino, shiira). I have tested removing internet plugins, deleting cache, history, duplicate fonts, plist, etc and nothing seems to want to fix this. I have loaded the latest release of flash, 8.0.27 UB after it was doing it with previous versions. I'm thinking it has something to do with flash but I'm not certain. Simpler webpages seem to load fine, it's the ones with lots of differing content that have a problem.
I have seen that this is not a unique problem to me, judging by the other posts here, but no-one has come up with a solution yet.
Any ideas and help would be very appreciated. It's driving me crazy!

    Hello, Simonw44
Sorry for your frustration, it seems you have done a lot to resolve this issue, you do not mention if you have tried running Safari under Rosetta , perhaps you could try and see if that helps, though I am not sure how it would help the other browsers. Safari ->Applications-> Get info-> check box . I have to say I do not run it under rosetta & it not an issue , some have to, I do not know what the variables might be or why.
I'm thinking it has something to do with flash but I'm not certain. Simpler webpages seem to load fine
Would you post the site/s that do not load for you ? Is it possible they are ActiveX flash sites?
Cards try previewing ( bit goofy) does this site work for you? It does on my intel. It is a Macromedia Flash site.
This is the Category for our intelsimac intel duo forum though I looked briefly & did not see much for Safari.
Hope this helps some. Please let us know.

  • Rosetta emulation gone on iMac 20" (2GHz, 10.5.5)

A few days ago, I noticed that some apps don't work anymore. They all are PPC. Now I tried to open a universal binary file (iChat, Safari) with Rosetta (used the file information and checked the rosetta option) and the app didn't work either. So it looks like my Rosetta emulation is gone completely. But why and... where?
What can I do (except for a complete reinstall) to get it back?

    Hey Guys ...
While I was researching about how to run PPC games on my Intel Mac Pro, using Rosetta, I discovered that a file was missing. So after I replaced the file I'm running AOE II (a 6 year old game).
But it's a pain to do so but follow these steps ...
    1) Insert your Leopard Install Disc. Make sure it's on the Desktop.
    2) Open a 'Terminal' window and type in +sudo -s+ then press the 'Return' key.
    3) Enter your Administrators password then press the 'Return' key.
    4) Type in cp and press the 'Space Bar' (to add a space).
    5) Click & drag the Leopard Install Disk from the 'Desktop' into the 'Terminal' window & release. This will add "\" to all the 'Spaces' in the Leopard Install Disk Name and at this point the 'Terminal' command line should look like this ...
    +cp /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ Disc\ 1+ (no space after the Disc Name).
    6) Now type in this:/usr/libexec/oah/translate and press the 'Space Bar' (to add a space).
    7) Now type in this: /usr/libexec/oah/. The command line should now look like this ...
    +cp /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ Disc\ 1/usr/libexec/oah/translate /usr/libexec/oah/+
    8) Now press the 'Return' key.
    9) If you receive an error then recheck the command line by pressing the up arrow key.
    10) If all went well then type in 'exit' and press the 'Return' key then close the 'Terminal' window.
    11) Run 'Disk Utility' to verify & set the required permissions.
Your PPC apps should run OK now.
    Good Luck.

  • Safari as a Power PC kind on Intel

    Hi,
I was recently taking a look to see what was halting my Mac up so I opened Activity Monitor. There was Safari heavily eating away at my CPU, but what I noticed most was that under the "Kind" column, it said PowerPC. I thought this just looked a little bit strange and I was wondering if it should look like that and if I could get some clarification on it.
Also, when I am on facebook the videos are extremely choppy and slow and I have no idea why. They run fine in Firefox.
    Thanks

I remember putting Safari in Rosetta mode a while back for some reason. Thanks for reminding me, it fixed all the problems!

  • Safari's "intervention"

I know a lot of people are having all kinds of problems with the new 3.0 Safari, but I haven't seen a thread about my particular problem, and I'm wondering if anyone can help or if I just have to wait and pray like so many others.
My browser quits unexpectedly when trying to watch embedded video. I think they're embedded. I can watch things like youtube and yahoo video fine, but stuff like .wmv and .mpg files on say...**** sites, crash it. It's not just the **** though, or I would say Safari was objecting to my questionable taste in entertainment, it's some stuff on the Apple website too! And while ads and the like aren't a problem, I still never know when I'm going to be linked a page with something that will set it off.
I can download these videos just fine, and they play in Quicktime just like they always have, I just can't watch them in Safari, and lord forbid I accidentally click on it without holding down the ctrl key.
I even downloaded the update for Safari today, thinking "Finally!", but no, I lose, they were just taunting me with hollow promises of corrected bugs.
Is there anything I can do? Maybe even some suggestion for whatever else could be causing this problem (it didn't start until I downloaded Safari 3.0)? Or at the very least, some instruction on how to reinstall Safari and rid myself of this version?

Hi Cat_juggler (wonderful mental image that conjures up!) and welcome to the forums!
You should be able to watch even 'those' videos on Safari 3.1 and 10.4.11.
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, 3.1, QT 7.3 or 7.4 and OS 10.4.11. (If you are running Leopard, ensure that all plug-ins have been updated for OS 10.5.2, but please see my footnote).
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack
The new RealPlayer Plus (v.11) is still in beta and therefore free, but works well on Tiger. It includes a download function, and you can get that here:
    http://uk.real.com/player/mac/
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS, but please see my footnote if you are running Leopard.)
In earlier versions than QT 7.1.3 in Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed all the correct version for your Mac of Security Updates up to and including 2008-002.
If they haven't put it back.
    FOOTNOTE
    If you are running Leopard:
Some users have mentioned that the latest Flash Player (v.9.0.115.0) conflicts with Leopard, and that they have needed to revert to v. 9.0.47. This can be downloaded from here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266&sliceId=1
