Safari in tiger broken, firefox works

Installed Tiger, Safari stopped working. Firefox works. Internet Explorer doesn't work. Just tried updating to 10.2 (automatic updates don't work either), and still the same.
Symptom: Safari tries to open home page (google), times out with blank page. Same with all other pages tried. Message is: "Safari can’t open the page.
Safari could not open the page “http://www.google.com/” because the server stopped responding."
Network connection is through airport connecting to DSL modem using PPPoE. Network preferences look fine.
Many network connections work fine; FireFox (now used to post this), Mail, ssh to other hosts, etc.
I tried turning on the debug menue and playing around, but no magic appeared. Page Load Test finishes with status OK, but page hasn't loaded.
Wits end... thanks for any help.

Hi Norman, a better log to look at would be ~/library/crash reporter/safari.
Have you tested with a hard wired connection? Have you tried entering an ip number? Try this in Safari:
http://17.254.0.91/
What do you mean in your first post " Just tried updating to 10.2 (automatic updates don't work either), and still the same"? I got confused because your specs say 10.4.2 but if you mean you haven't yet updated to 10.4.2 because you can't download it through SU, then there is a better option.
First repair Permission and DIsk:
Repair Permissions: This should be done BEFORE and AFTER all software installs and updates.
1. Navigate to Utilities/DiskUtility and launch Disk Utility.
2. Choose your volume (usually the second icon)
3. Choose "First Aid" tab
4. Click on "Repair Permissions"
Repair Disk:
Steps for using Disk Utility
1. Insert your Mac OS X CD-ROM disc or Restore DVD disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key until you see the spinning gear..
2. Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6. Click Repair.
If you repair errors run it until no errors found.
Now, you may be able to repair this with the 10.4.2 Stand Alone Combo Update.
This is a full install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Good luck, let us know.

  • I have the latest Lion and Safari.  I am having great troubles with Safari in performance.  FireFox works great, but Safari updated 5.1.2 is awful.  What can be done to fix the latest version?  I have tried everything!

Is Apple going to fix Safari 5.1.2?  It has been a nightmare for since the update.  I only had my Mac for a short period of time and didn't have the problem when I started. It all started when the update was loaded.  It is puzzling when Mozilla FireFox works better, but slower than the Safari.  I was told this browser was the best to use for Macs.  I am not seeing it!  I have empty the cache, reset Safari, and reset the prefences.  I still can't images, server not found error, or best yet-not connected to the internet when the news ticker is running.  What more can I do so I can make use of Safari?  I am tired to reset and clear cache every time I wish to go browse.
    Thank you!

    Hey, everbody:
I finally threw in the towel and called tech support since it is free for me for the moment after making my post this morning.  They fix my Safari problem!  First, they had me do a shut down and unplug the computer for 30 seconds.  This idea didn't work for me.  Then they had me go and change my DNS from my IP address that was listed to the following:
    Go to System Preferences
    Click on Network
    Click Advance
    Click on DSN
Under DSN Severs there is a plus sign.  Click on it.
    Type: 8.8.8.8
Add another by clicking the plus sign and Type: 8.8.4.4
Go back to the beginning--main page and push the Apply button and then close.
Open Safari to see if that works
This works!  So far my Safari 5.1.2 is working like it was before the update on Lion and Safair package!  I hope this will help some of you.
Thank you for trying to help me with my intitial question, but it turned out that I needed help from support and fix my DNS.  This may not work for all of you, but I hope for some it can relieve the stress.

  • Safari not loading pages, Firefox working fine

    Hi there,
My Safari has not been working for about 6 months now, thought it's about time I did some troubleshooting.
Pages just refuse to load. The blue progress bar stays in the same spot and doesn't move.
I have performed several updates since it stopped working, most recently updated to Safari 5.0.6 - and still nothing.
Firefox works without a problem though..
    Things I have tried:
Running Safari on another user account
Reinstalling and rolling back to earlier versions of Safari.
Deleting all add-ons in InputManager folders (Both home and HD directories)
    Repairing HD in DIsk Utility
Really unsure what to try next, any help would be greatly appreciated!

When you have problems with apps in more then one account, it's possible the startup disk needs repairing.
Launch Disk Utility and verify and if necessary, repair the startup disk.

  • I have a MAC running 10.6. I cant get firefox to connect to the internet unless I first open Safari and connect. Firefox works fine after that. This is a new problem on my machine How do I correct for this?

When I boot my Mac (Snowleapord 10.6) and attempt to start Firefox, the system alerts me that it cannot find the internet and requests that I try again. It is not until I start Safari, establish a connection that I can get firefox to work. This is a new problem. Until recently, things worked fine. How do I resolve this issue?

Same proble here, although the Firefox system requirements says it is OK to have PowerPC G3 G4 or G5 ( I have G5 2GHZ)
My solution; very simply use timemachine to restore the previous Frefox 3.x
    worked great in 3 mns

  • Safari not connecting but Firefox working

Have been having problems connecting to my home wireless system today. Finally resolved that issue but now only the Firefox browser is working not safari. I'm sure I've reset something wrong but what any ideas?

Use Spotlight to search for a file called login.keychain. Users/YourUserName/Library(which is a hidden folder and won't show in Finder)/Keychains. Click Go in the menu bar then Go to Folder and type in /Users/YourUserName/Library and hit the enter key. Look down the list of folder and find Keychains. The "login.keychain" file should be inside.

It's stands to reason, that Mail is outdated.  Use Software Update to update your os as well as Mail and anything else that needs to be updated showing up in Software Update.

    1. From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
    2. Select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data...
    and confirm. Test.
    3. If the above steps don't resolve the problem, please describe it in more detail.

  • If I upgrade my iMac G4 from Tiger OSX 10.3.9 to Leopard OSX 10.5 will Firefox work properly as it will not allow me to upgrade and so I am losing out on much of what Firefox does?

The message is That I am using an older version of Firefox but I can't upgrade to the most recent version (within the last year) and I am losing the ability to do things. For example, I can't send out emails from Gmail now, the type on the screens of many web sites is squeezed small and some web pages are "scrambled" in appearance. Before I purchase an upgrade to the Leopard OSX 10.5 I would like to know if Firefox works properly with it?

Well, with a PPC Mac you can upgrade as far as Firefox 3.6.19 if you upgrade from Tiger OSX 10.3.9 to Leopard OSX 10.5, but Firefox doesn't support PPC architecture in the latest Firefox 4, 5, and 6.0 versions.
    For older Macs that aren't supported in Firefox 4.0 & 5.0, try TenFourFox for PowerPC's running Mac 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 . <br />
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
But, you still need to carefully investigate if your hardware specs are sufficient for either Firefox 3.6.19 or for 10-4Fox.

  • Photos pages only working in Safari, not IE or Firefox

I have a website with quite a few photos pages on a site, and they only seem to load reliably in Safari, and not in Firefox or IE. A reload will sometimes fix the problem. Has anyone else seen behavior like this? An example of this is:
    http://marilynstevensphotography.com/2008Senior1.html
You can click on the gallery link on the nav bar, and see links to many other pages that behave the same way.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
I have the same issue. With Firefox 3b5 the page referenced above (original post) doesn't show properly, no pictures show at all... the whole "album" is just ignored. However, it looks fine in Safari and Firefox 2.0.14. So, there is some issue with Firefox 3b5 and iWeb's album page. I have the same problem with my page at http://www.fci-tv.com As far as I know my page works on Windows with IE (whatever version comes with XP).

for the last 6 months my mac is crashing all the time. I think it is safari because firefox works fine. Any suggestions?

What is crashing, is it just Safari or is the entire computer freezing (if that's what you mean by crashing)? If the latter, are you saying it only happens when Safari is open?
You need to explain with more detail just what is happening and when.
Do you get a message to restart?

Can't open Pdfs in firefox, works fine in Safari. Please help?

    This resolved my problem
I checked and my Firefox is doing (or not doing in this case)  the same thing.  There seems to be a problem with the Snow Leopard and the Adobe browser plugin.  I was able to get Firefox working again by going to Firefox > Preferences > Applications and switching all to Adobe settings to "Use Adobe Reader (default)" instead of the plugin.  Then I went to Tools > Add-ons... > Plugins and disabled the Acrobat plugin.  Restarted Firefox and now pdf worked.

  • Safari won't open anything.  Firefox works fine.

Safari won't open anyuthing.  Firefox works fine.  Is something happenng at the Safari end?

    Sue --
Are you really still on 10.5.1?
Tell us your exact OS, the version of Safari you're running, how long this has been happening, etc.  Is it actually crashing?  Does it open up with your Home Page?  Then what happens when you want to see a site?

  • Safari stopped, but firefox works

    Hello,
I use safari (2.04) and camino (1.04)as my
browsers. Last week suddenly both stopped connecting
    to the internet.
    camino error is as follows:
"The connection was refused when attempting to contact the proxy server you have configured. Please check your proxy settings and try again."
    safari error is:
Safari can’t open the page “http://apple.com/” because it could not connect to the server “apple.com”.
I have downloaded camino again and it still does not connect. I can not find safari downloads.
    However Firefox (2.0) works fine.
I prefer to use camino / safari. Any help in
    solving this matter is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Prasad

You're welcome. Not sure what triggers the "proxy" designation during the update, however, whenever you see the "proxy error message", the Network Proxy setting is the best place to check first.
Thanks for the and Aloha from Big Island.

  • Cannot use Safari or iTunes to access net, Firefox works ??

    You guys,
Out of the blue, I'm unable to load pages in Safari or connect to the iTunes store in iTunes. Firefox works, though.
    What gives ??

I have just developed the same problem after having to reinstall 10.4.11 from an old back up.
My problem is compounded by an issue with my system preferences that will not allow me to open the Network panel - it goes into a loop saying your settings have been changed by another application - how do I deal with this latter issue?
