Safari incompatibility

Hello
I am a university student, using the IPAD as a study tool. I'm facing several problems with the Safari browser because it does not have an ideal support for university study includes program with online tools such as the program used by most U.S. universities, called Blackboard. The pages come out in the middle does not support bar on the page, does not support java, I can not take my labs, exams and assignments in line instead of the iPad. I know an application of the backboard but it is almost nonfunctional and incopatible with versions that run the universities, for which I beg you to help me to use the backboard on line at its maximum layers and thus is a tool ipad complete my studies.

  • Safari incompatibility with MS Office for MAC

Ever since downloading and installing Safari Version 4 two days ago, I am unable to open MS Office for Mac. Entourage, Powerpoint, Word, and Excel are all affected. Any suggestions?

    Hi jioewnhagen;
You might want to consider using OpenOffice instead M$ Office. Two of the people I help to support have found it to be much better with Leopard.

  • IPad: Safari: Incompatibility with Amazon functionality

If I use Safari on my iPad to browse to my Amazon.co.uk wishlist, then the various gadgets do not work properly, though they work perfectly using Safari on my PC.
Specifically the gadget for moving wishlist items to another wishlist does not deal with scroll bars correctly. There is no scroll bar drawn so you can't see all items in the list.
In addition if you try to bring up the priority / copies received dialog, it sometimes just jumps to the end of the web site instead of bringing up the dialog.

I wonder if that is really true. Since the iPad does not support Flash (like it's little cousins the iPhone and iPod) you may find it necessary to use the mobile versions of some websites.

  • RealPlayer 10.1 - Safari Incompatibility

Ok, Issuing a new thread since it's getting confusing with older ones.
The new RealPlayer load is Universal (10.1), plugin also.
Now, Safari doesn't load the content, it seems it recognizes the plugin, but then blank. I've tried putting the plugin (not the shortcut) in the Internet Plugin Folder to no avail...

As mentioned these are websafe font / also occurs with self/hosted fonts

    Any work around?
    Thanks
    Milton

    Hi Zak
Thank you for your prompt response.
I have been reviewing this issue on a number of screens an Browsers – I realise the huge hassle of compatibility comments.
Below links and further explanation and screen shots
    Thanks again
    Milton
Web safe fonts (e.g. helvetica / arial) render poorly when:
Any ‘composition’ is set below the text and the 'composition' is set to ‘pin’
See first scroll page at www.edehorton.com
The top slideshow is 'pinned' and it is this action that creates the issue for text on the whole page.
It also occurs when text is on top of a ‘Browser Fill’  that has an ‘Image added’  and ‘scrolling’ check box left unchecked’
See first scroll page a www.edehorton.com/judaica.html
creates the issue for text on the whole page.
I can remedy these  situations by ‘unpinning' the 'compostion’ or placing the ‘pinned' 'composition' above the text
or in the second instance by turning the ‘scrolling’ radio check button in ‘Browser fill’  on.
    Screen snap shots below
Comparison 'Web safe font - Helvetica' plus 'Webfont' render
Chrome = all good / Firefox = all good /Safari running on ‘retina’ displays = all good Safari 5.06 on' non-retina' = all good
Safari 7.06 running on ‘non-retina’ displays = bad

  • QuickTime for Windows - version incompatibility with Safari 5.1?

This issue involves a Dell Laptop running Windows XP Pro, SP3.
I installed Quicktime and iTunes, and both were functioning fine.
I then installed Open Office, a couple of Windows security updates. and then Safari 5.1
Immediately after the above installations, neither QuickTime nor iTunes could play mp4 video, and QuickTime could not play m4a or mp3 audio.
I made the assumption that it must have had something to do with Open Office, or perhaps Safari 5.1.
I completely uninstalled all Apple software on the PC. I then installed Open Office and QuickTime, in that order.
QuickTime once again could play both mp4 video and m4a or mp3 audio.
I hoped that I had fixed the problem.
However, immediately after installing Safari 5.1 once again, Quicktime again could not play video or audio.
The time pointer moves in real time, but there is no audio, and video shows a new frame every 2 seconds (approx.), but no sound.
    The QuickTime version is 7.6.7.
Is there an absolute need to install the "Safari + Quicktime" installer to avoid this type of issue? My main computer is a Mac, and I'm pretty sure
I've updated Safari on occasion w/o first installing the latest Quicktime. Perhaps the issue is more complex with Windows.
    Thanks for reading

  • Colour Space Incompatibility when viewing in safari/on Mac

    Hello,
I am currently in the process of building a website for my photographic work using Dreamweaver.
At the moment everything is fine when viewing on the computer i created it on...a PC on both Internet Explorer and Firefox. However, when viewing on a Mac, with safari, you can see slight changes in colour in the background and image boxes i have put on.
I have no idea why this is happening, perhaps the colour is slightly different from Photoshop to Dreamweaver, but why would this not show up on PC's...I would really appreciate any help given as it's part of a uni project which I have to get done.
If it helps, the website address is www.candicegallab.co.uk and i am having problems with the About, Gallery and Outside in pages.
    Thanks

As you have just learned, many browsers do not support embedded color spaces. I believe sRGB is going to be the most consistent across browsers, but I am not an expert in that area. PNG files support Gamma settings, but I have not done comparisons for Web browsers across operating systems and don't know if the various browsers support PNG Gamma.
I realize this goes off topic from your question, but please do consider the following in addition to the previous replies. Better to deal with all of these issues up front rather than after the site is nearly finished.
Your images are scaled disproportionally, using the <img> width and height attributes. Best to use your graphics program to scale the images and, unless it was intentional, scale the images proportionally. ie: Outsidein.jpg starting at 369x247, scaled to match your 210 height would be 314x210.
This dispropotionate scaling is most obvious in your text images where the text is blurry. Proportional scaling would keep the text more legible. BUT, Nancy is 100% correct. Use text for text. Search engines see nothing on your site other than links and image links.
There is nothing on www.candicegallab.co.uk/Outside%20in.html to indicate that, for instance, "OutsideIn is a photographic project..." This is all the text you have available to search engines on that page:
    Untitled Document
    O U T S I D E I N
    H O M E A B O U T G A L L E R Y C O N T A C T N E X T
There are only two words - the title. And that title is the same on all your pages.
Also, avoid spaces in all your directory and file names.

  • Installing Adobe Creative Suite 4 & Safari 4 Incompatibility

I have been having a miserable time trying to install Adobe Creative Suite (CS) 4 on my iMac G5 (OS 10.4.11).
I have the CS Master Collection and some of the applications have system requirements beyond the capability of my machine. Nevertheless, a custom install is allowed for the applications I meet requirements on.
    The problem is as follows:
In order for me to run the custom installation, I have to get past an installer alert that tells me all of the requirements are not met and do I want to continue. With Safari 4 installed, however, the installer alert window comes up blank, i.e., no message and no options to quit or continue.
Adobe's solution is to uninstall Safari 4 and to reinstall Safari 3.2.1. See http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/497/cpsid_49755.html. In theory, this would allow me to see the installer alert and continue.
Using Amnesia I uninstalled Safari 4 (or so I thought). Then I downloaded Safari 3.2.1 and tried to install it, at which point the installer told me that a newer version of Safari was installed on my hard drive (presumably residuals of Safari 4). So, I tried to use Pacifist and Hunter Bridewell's instructions (See Apple Discussion Topic : Safari 4.0 (5530.17) cannot uninstall ) to load 3.2.1 in place of or in parallel to 4, which is in theory no longer on my hard drive. I can then load the version 3.2.1 application of Safari and it runs. The problem is that the CS4 installation keeps hanging up, and I think it's due to some residual configuration, root, etc. file that is still present related to Safari 4.
Does anyone have any thoughts? According to Adobe, there's supposedly a patch to solve all of this on the Apple site, but I can't find it anywhere in the Apple downloads or any reference to it in the Discussion Topics.
    Anybody have any thoughts?

Never heard of a patch from Apple for this problem. If Adobe talked about a patch they would have supplies an URL to the patch. To be honest it sounds like an Adobe problem and not an Apple problem.
The URL you posted said to install under a safe boot. Have you tried that?
Even tho you are installing parts of the suite that your computer complies to the system requirements for... You better check Adobe on this... There's no reason to further to muck your computer until you talk to Adobe.

  • Adobe Reader 8 + Safari 3 Incompatibility?

Ever since installing the Adobe Reader 8, I find Safari crashing every time I open a PDF within the browser. The PDF will load, I can view it for 5-10 seconds, and then Safari unexpectedly quits. After re-installing the previous version (7.x) this problem seems to have gone away.
Has anyone experienced this problem, and if so, found a way to run Reader 8 without having Safari crash? Thanks.

I'm also having trouble with Reader 8.1. I can load and view PDF files just fine, but Safari 3 crashes every time I try to print. I also tried Navigator 9 for Mac and could not print from that browser either. I believe it's a compatibility issue with Reader 8 and OS 10.4.10. On Adobe's web site, they only list compatibility through 10.4.9 and only with Safari 2.0.2. I've just been using Preview to view and print PDF files. It works great.

  • EMAIL PROVIDER SAYS  NEW INCOMPATIBILITY PROBLEM  IS DUE TO SAFARI SETTINGS

I have been relying primarily on mail.com for years. Occasionally have had problems whenever they upgraded, but ever since they joined aol. in December, it's been next to impossible to access my email on a regular basis. Recently, logging in has been especially slow and once I get on, almost all messages before mid-December '09 and after April 24 -10 have disappeared. . . . Messages from the service provider itself sent earlier today also do not appear.
I have already tried all the obvious (e.g., clearing cache and cookies and resetting Safari), but problem still exits. Also searched for any Safari preference file that might have changed since December, but couldn't find one. Finally spoke with a mail.com tech support rep who had not heard of any other Safari user reporting similar problem, so in his opinion, problem is related to Safari settings,
Since FireFox does work perfectly, I guess I have to agree; but I still would like to access my mail via Safari as well, because it allows me to view two documents simultaneously.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks for the response, Carolyn. I tried iyour suggestions, but they did not change things on mail.com.
I can still open my new mail folder, but none of the messages either before or after the dates I mentioned previously show up.
Re: the questions you asked: I don't recall ever creating any settings for Mac OS X Mail. Have been using mail.com for years . . . but also don't even remember setting it up as I upgraded from one Mac to the next. It's just always moved along with all my other files (I think maybe via firewire the last time).
I'm also not sure exactly what the relationship is between mail.com and aol . . . only that there was a major system upgrade in December and that the name "aol" has popped up at different times. (To be honest, have never cared, as long as I could receive and send mail.) Also was never advised to reconfigure anything related to access.
The same was true for FireFox (as well as Camino and Opera, which I also use occasionally). But Safari is the only browser that has demonstrated a problem.
I am using an iMac/dual core processor, which I bought the first week it was in the stores — with OS 10.4.11 and Safari 4.0.5.
    Any other thoughts?

  • Jnlp incompatibility with Safari and Chrome - work arounds?

I've been developing an extension to live connect that allows remote development from the IDE. As part of this I need to reliably deploy an applet on (Firefox, IE, Safari (Ver 4 on Vista), Opera and Chrome). Everything works fine on Firefox and IE but Safari and Chrome don't even recognize the jnlp urls as java related - just dead tags.
If I deploy using "http://java.com/js/deployJava.js" all browsers work correctly but I loose the jnlp features.
I have questions for two deployment use cases -
Case one is the user case which does not require advanced features such as socket access. Obviously I can deploy using the script and everything's happy - is this the best solution?
Case two is the developer case where the applet creates a socket connection to an running on the IDE. This works fine with jnlp on firefox and explorer but not on other platforms. Do I need jnlp to open the socket to local host? Is there a way to get jnlp to properly deploy/launch on Safari and Chrome?
All answers and advice are appreciated,
    Bob

Firstly, apologies for the delayed response! Secondly, thanks for the advice!
I have created another user and both browsers are perfectly fine and instantly responsive.
My security settings are on WPA/WPA2-Personal(PSK).
Any suggestions what in my main user causes the problem?

  • 10.5.7 Fundamental Incompatibility with Mac Pro - Screen/System Lock ups

    Hi all.
It looks like 10.5.7 is causing a lot of problems, but I think I found a problem that is very fundamental.
First, my system. It's one of the original Mac Pros with Quad Xeons at 2.66GHz. It has 24GB of RAM and several drives in there. I have 3 30" displays plugged into 3 NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT cards. I originally ran a 10.5.7 combo update on my 10.5.6 system, and experienced these problems (detailed below). As I was also running a beta of iTunes and the iPhone SDK (the 3rd release), and beta 2 of Safari 4, I thought this may have caused some trouble. So, I tried an experiment.
I bought a new Corsair 256GB SSD for my startup drive. Loaded my family pack of 10.5.6 onto it as a fresh install, and just applied the 10.5.7 combo update. I get the exact same behavior with no further software. So, this is a fundamental incompatibility of 10.5.7 with a machine having these specs.
Now the problems. They start with the primary (in my case center) screen locking while the other two screens keep working. Meaning, the primary display "works" but none of the windows move, the clock freezes...yet, if you move the mouse there and luckily grab a window, you could move it out onto the other 2 displays and it would allow you to continue to use the application. If you hit the CONTROLkey and scroll up and down (zooming the display in and out) it can sometimes "unlock" the primary display, but then there are many artifacts. For example, the shadows cast by windows appear as plain grey "dashboard esque" blocks and have black stripes at the edges. Also, at random times, the machine just seems to hang completely, and unlock a minute or 2 later. Eventually it locks for good.
Unfortunately this has lead me into a deadlock situation. My iTunes has been updated to the 3rd beta in the iPhone 3.0 SDK release. The library has been modified and only works with that version now. That version requires 10.5.7. So if I revert back to 10.5.6, I lose my iTunes Library or have to wait till the offical version of iTunes is realeased (although that may still require 10.5.7).
I see lots of people are having Firewire (800 in particular) problems, and I have several drives I need on Firewire. It's not a solution to yank them. It all works fine under 10.5.6, of course.
So the question is...is help on it's way? What to do!?
    Thanks for any insights.

I can only tell you that I've run 10.5.7 on my Mac Pro, same model as yours, without any problems. As a beta tester my Mac Pro was the main hardware on which 10.5.7 was tested. I currently have it installed on a first generation iMac, MacBook, and MacBook Pro as well as a second generation MacBook Pro. So far not a single problem.
But, I don't have multiple video cards nor do I use any beta version of iTunes (didn't know there was one since each system upgrade includes the current release) but I do use the Safari 4 Beta - the most recent version just released when 10.5.7 was released.)
I can suggest you read the following about updates of system software:
Essential Steps Before Updating OS X!
Please do things right before updating OS X in order to avoid problems.
    A. Repair Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means your backup drive (should be erased first.)
Source means your startup drive or volume.
    C. Download the Standalone Combo Updater from Apple.
Be sure you quit all running applications and disconnect all peripherals (except original keyboard and mouse) before running the installer. When the installer is running do not use the computer in any way other than to respond to an installer dialog.
Install the update by double-clicking on the installer package icon. When the installation is completed Restart the computer. Your computer will boot twice - this is normal. Upon completion of the update use Disk Utility to repair permissions. Not all permissions will seem repaired. You will get spurious reports regarding permissions related to iTunes, Front Row. These can be ignored. They will appear every time you repair permissions.
Following these basic steps should prevent most if not all updating problems. Note that if you have unrepairable disk problems reported in Step A then DO NOT update your system until those problems are resolved.
If you find that you did not follow these suggestions, then you might consider reinstalling OS X and going about the process properly in the hope of a successful result:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Is Apple going to make Safari compatible with Youtube again?

Like many others, I have tried every fix to be able to watch Youtube videos on Safari. I have a 2007 Mac book. I get sound, but no video just a black screen. Works in 32 bit mode but I made this fix, not Apple. Youtube works fine on Camino, Chrome and Firefox. One would think Apple would want Youtube to work on their browser which used to be my favorite. Has Apple even addressed this incompatibility issue? Until they do I suggest Camino. It is pretty cool.

You're welcome. And Extensions aren't the issue.
If you still have problems with Flash, repair permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
If you see any warnings re: SUID messages, they can be safely ignored, information here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US

When you are finished, restart your Mac.
Just in case, check ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins. If you have ClickToFlash installed, try moving the plugin to the Trash. Relaunch Safari.

  • Can't view pages from Safari on my Mac

When I'm on a website & need to display a page, it comes up dark grey. I don't know which program is having a problem, or how to reset so that I can see the content. I'm fairly certain that all my programs are up to date, this problem began several months ago. Prior to that, I had no problems viewing them in Safari, my preferred browser. Lately, if this happens, I need to open FireFox to view. Any suggestions on what went wrong, and how to fix it? I really don't like having to switch browsers, as it slows me down quite a bit.

Depending on your version of Mac OS X and Safari,  it may vary.

  • IOS 4.1 issues: 2nd gen ipod touch: safari and weather

In general i did not like what the upgrade from 3.1.3 to 4.0 did to my touch. It become soooooo sloooow on mail and had shortened battery life. However to be fair, the wifi range was improved a little and also network speeds. Clicking on settings however caused a blank screen for around 6 seconds (tap tap tap go the fingers...) whereas on 3.1.3 it was <1 second. Could not revert to 3.1.3 as the cert had expired by the time I got around to it (a couple maybe 3 days) so onwards and upwards...hoping that 4.1 might have fixed a few bugs
(I should know better by now, majornumber.minornumber = upgrade with new bugs, majornumber.minornumber.yetanothernumber = most bugs fixed, like say dos 6.22)
I took the plunge and upgraded to 4.1
good news: some bugs are fixed:
    1. it only takes about 3 seconds now (vs 6 before) to open settings
    2. battery life seems a scosche better
    bad news and weirdness:
    1. safari was formerly the king of ipod browsers for me however OS 4.1 introduced a new bug into safari:
on a site I scan a lot for finance news zerohedge.com/rss.xml it comes up fine as before to the first page via a redirect to reader.mac.com -
    http://reader.mac.com/mobile/v1/http%3A%2F%2Ffeeds.feedburner.com%2Fzerohedge%2F feed
but when I click on any link in the wonderfully formatted for ipod/iphone RSS feed it now goes to a blank page whereas before it would snap up the RSS synopsis in a blink. Now nothing. On my macbook the feed wroks just fine as it always has of course there it's feeds.feedburner.com/zerohedge/feed without going through reader.mac.com
Could be co-incidence except it was working right before the upgrade and then not right afterwards. Might be an incompatibility with reader.mac.com just introduced... oh well I will just have to write my own RSS formatter for ipod touch and make it work on any browser so I won't need a broken safari any more. Sad really as Safari had quite the edge before.
    2. *weather app* I live in San Diego, CA and I use the weather app a lot to check what the temperatures for the day and the week are likely to be.
Right before the os 4.1 update I checked the temperatures for San Diego and it showed expected temps which agreed with the weather channel on the TV right in front of me.
Now this is weird: right after the update, the temps on the weather app now show 7 F more than on the weather channel!
I'm used to both the temps on the weather channel and the weather app agreeing to being off by about the same amount for where I live, I just add a few degrees to the high as we live a few miles inland from downtown.
The only explanation for this new weirdness that I can think of is that 4.1 is somehow using location awareness to give more accurate temps (hah what would be the chance of that?).
If that is the case then I'd like to be given the option to choose which zip to use.
OTOH maybe its just an interesting bug....
I tried deleting and re-adding San Diego, CA but same result, also tried switching off location services, no difference.
    Oh well I'll wait for 4.1.02 <wide-grin>
So if you know how to fix these things other than me writing my own RSS reader and mentally subtracting temps to correct, let me know!

several days later.... today the weather app is still broken:
weather.com says right now 80F for san diego, ca but on the weather app on the
touch it says 91F that's quite the discrepancy.
I note that there have been numerous similar problems for folks after updates over the last several years...guess the wethaer app must have a continuuing glitch built into the software. Tried reloading it from 92093 and same result so it isn't a location issue.
Can't believe I'm the only one with this issue given how many hits I get for similar issues on previous upgrades.
Right now it is still soooo broken. Thanks for all the attention Apple, so nice to know y'all care. Love the "let's beta test on the live system" upgrade MO. If anyone should have a test suite for everything it should be Apple. Forget support looks like android is the place to go. see ya.
