Safari is.. Totally Freaking Out

Alright, so, long time user here, and I'm experiencing a strange problem with Safari. I've done a bit to try and remedy it, but to no avail. I've had a few friends log onto their various Twitter, Facebook, etc accounts on my computer. Being the confidential friends they are, they are sure not to check "remember my password" or whatever.
Well, occasionally, I reload my while logged into my Twitter or Facebook, only to find that I am now on one of my friends accounts, without any explanation or anything. I mean, I was literally sitting there, wondering, "Oh, I wonder if anything new has happened here in the endless abyss of the internet," so I click refresh and suddenly I am on an entirely different account that I shouldn't have access to. The only connection is that the account I now find myself on was once or twice logged in to from my computer, and a long time ago at that. And like I said, I know they haven't clicked "remember my password," and even if they did, shouldn't resetting Safari and emptying the cache.. remove that all?
It has happened multiple times on different websites.. But it's kinda starting to bug me. If nothing else, it's a huge security breach thing- If I wasn't a respectful sort of person, I would have had several opportunities to mess with accounts I shouldn't have access to.
I've reset Safari multiple times and emptied the cache as well. After that, I thought the problem was gone, but it resurfaced tonight. Suggestions? I was thinking about moving to the preference file or something, but I don't want to lose that if I don't have to.

Twitter? Facebook? The two best-known sources for malware!
You may have acquired a Trojan. Please read on:
No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download from:
http://www.clamxav.com/
However, the appearance of Trojans and other malware that can possibly infect a Mac seems to be growing, but is a completely different issue to viruses.
If you allow a Trojan to be installed, the user's DNS records can be modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's (that's you!) DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X. It's available here:
http://macscan.securemac.com/
The DNSChanger Removal Tool detects and removes spyware targeting Mac OS X and allows users to check to see if the trojan has been installed on their computer; if it has, the software helps to identify and remove the offending file. After a system reboot, the users' DNS records will be repaired.
(Note that a 30 day trial version of MacScan can be downloaded free of charge from:
http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
and this can perform a complete scan of your entire hard disk. After 30 days the cost is $29.99. The full version permits you to scan selected files and folders only, as well as the entire hard disk.)
A white paper has recently been published on the subject of Trojans by SubRosaSoft, available here:
http://www.macforensicslab.com/ProductsAndServices/index.php?mainpage=document_general_info&cPath=11&productsid=174
Also, beware of MacSweeper:
MacSweeper is malware that misleads users by exaggerating reports about spyware, adware or viruses on their computer. It is the first known "rogue" application for the Mac OS X operating system. The software was discovered by F-Secure, a Finland based computer security software company on January 17, 2008
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacSweeper
On June 23, 2008 this news reached Mac users:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/23/mac_trojan/
More information on Mac security can be found here:
http://macscan.securemac.com/
The MacScan application can be downloaded from here:
http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
You can download a 30 day trail copy which enables you to do a full scan of your hard disk. After that it costs $29.95.
More on Trojans on the Mac here:
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/63574.html?welcome=1214487119
The latest news on the subject, from July 25, 2008, is:
Attack code that exploits flaws in the net's addressing system are starting to circulate online, say security experts.
The code could be a boon to phishing gangs who redirect web users to fake bank sites and steal login details.
In light of the news net firms are being urged to apply a fix for the loop-hole before attacks by hi-tech criminals become widespread.
Net security groups say there is anecdotal evidence that small scale attacks are already happening.
Further details here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7525206.stm
A further recent development is the Koobface malware that can be picked up from Facebook (already a notorious site for malware), as reported here on December 9, 2008:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/technology/newsid_7773000/7773340.stm
There may be other ways of guarding against Trojans, viruses and general malware affecting the Mac, and alternatives will probably appear in the future. In the meantime the advice is: be careful where you go on the web and what you download!

  • Safari 2.0 freaks out

I have a two-day old G5 DP 2.3ghz running Safari 2.0. There have been three incidents when my mouse's (Logitech MX900 BT mouse) pointer will begin to flutter (blink rapidly) and then Safari will scroll itself down to the bottom of whatever webpage I'm on as if something is hammering on the page down key. Even if I try to scroll back up or move the sidebar, the page will continue to jump to the bottom in a crazy manner. After about 15 seconds of this, it will stop and go back to normal. Can anyone help me figure out what's causing this? It's only happened in Safari so far, on different websites each time.

Terence, I don't know how you got the MX900 BT to work with Mac OS X, but everything I see on the web says that the system requirement is Windows 2000/XP and an IBM-compatible system without built-in Bluetooth. Maybe that is the problem.

  • Is your safari freaking out?

I've been using Mountain Lion on my late 2011 mbp 17" 2.5Ghz i7 - now for over a week, safari is starting to FREAK out, pages randomly have clear boxes flickering irratically around menues and link items, flashing and glitching with a move of the cursor.  Anyone else noticing these glitchy browsing episodes everywhere online while using Mountain Lion's safari?   Thanks.

Everything is up-to-date thanks and I reset Safari after every other session.
Graphical content freaks out where when you scroll your cursor over a tag or image tag or what ever, it flickers and then sometimes you see a blown up image from an icon, other times, you leave the page idle and when you go to move the cursor, the whole page flickers, glitches and jumps...
My Lion machines don't do this ever.  I am now online using ethernet and everything seems much more stable, except for facebook, when i am on that is, the glitchy images as the cursor goes over people's names and their blown up profiles causes static and overlap images which stays there until i scroll the page up and down to errase it!
    Stuff like that...

  • MBP display freaking out :( pic inside

I've had zero problems with my macbook (other than being refurbished and kinda lopsided) but this morning it started freaking out. I've never dropped it, never run the battery out. its about 3 weeks old.
    http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/2561/88263723tx5.jpg
is this telltale for the "new" dispplay glitches tied to the last update?

I am having a similar problem. Intermittent (seemingly random) display freezes where the screen "fragments" . See the photos:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/2DAnimationAcademy/SickMacbookDisplay
The screen is fragmented into hundreds of little squares . Sometimes it is much worse than
this and no discernible image on the screen is visible, just row upon row of these little square fragments.
Hardware test shows No Trouble Found.
Fsck from command line says Volume Appears Ok.
Repaired Permissions and defragged hard drive with Disk Warrior.
It happened the first time last week. I shut down , left it off for an hour to cool down (my first thought being it was an over-heating problem) . It started up again with no problem . Ran fine for another week , then the problem returned . This time multiple reboots did not fix the problem . Took it to the Apple Store genius bar. Display was totally fragmented (worse than in the attached photo) . Hard Drive seemed to be ok , so they advised backing up everything and sending it in to be repaired (I have Apple Care) . Last night I used Carbon Copy Cloner to get all my files over to an external firewire drive. Apple Care is sending me the DSL box to mail it in tomorrow.
Here's the thing : I booted it up this morning just to check it one last time and everything looked normal; it's been on all day today and no sign of the problem . Frustration ! I'm afraid I'll send it in to Apple only to have them tell me there's no problem that they can see or detect (if they run Hardware Test it will show No Trouble Found as when I ran it . Just ran it again now and the same results : No Trouble Found) Then they'll send it back , I'll have lost a week or two use of my MacBook and no answers for why this is happening ... until next time the darned display freezes and fragments (?) . I'm hesitant to send it in . Maybe I should just archive and reinstall the OS . I'm still on OS 10.4 because some of my applications haven't "caught up" to OS 10.5 yet .
Has anyone else ever seen this sort of screen fragmentation ?
Could it be caused by a software conflict ? It seems like it must be a hardware issue, except Disk Warrior says the disk checks out ok and Apple Hardware Test says "No Trouble Found" .

  • Display "freaking" out, internal issue?

For a long time now, my display will randomly "freak" out. What do I mean by freak out? I mean, it starts getting stretched vertically and horizontally, half of the top (lets say half of safari) will be at the bottom, etc. I have to move the display back and fourth until it stops. To see if this was an OS issue, I screen shared with someone else. I was able to finally recreate the issue, and they saw no problems. I'm guessing that this would be a wire being squashed or something.
I've never dropped or done anything to my computer that would cause this. In fact, this started a month after purchasing it and I've been dealing with it for a year now. Recently, it's been getting worse and won't go away.
Anyone got tips? Should I just go to the store and ask them what to do? If they are going to make me pay to fix it, I'll be pretty frustrated as I've done nothing wrong. Is this a faulty display? Am I liable for a replacement computer?
    Thanks.

Do you have the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics chip? If so, you might be having this problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
If you have access to an Apple Store, there is a specific diagnostic test they can run to find this problem. If this is what it is, the repair will be done at no cost to you.
I agree with eww that you should have reported this problem to Apple before the 1 year warranty was up. No matter what it was, they would have fixed it under warranty. Now unless it turns out to be the NVIDIA problem, you are on your own.
    Good luck!

  • Some open gl apps freak out.

I'm still researching, but I think this problem has to do with SDL.
here's part of a post that I believe applies to me...
    Frozen bubble outputs:
[SDL Init] [Graphics...] [Levels] Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault
    (SDL Parachute Deployed)
    Segmentation fault
    Tuxracer:
Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)
    Segmentation fault
    Foobillard:
Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)
GLTron and Chromium work fine, so it appears to be just SDL and not
    OpenGL.
Anyway,  Im using the nvidia driver with dual screens. A gforce3 as
primary agp card and gforce4 as secondary pci card. I suspect that
there is a conflict going on somewhere between using the nvidia
driver, openGL and SDL. and it might have something to do with
    the upgraded xfree86.  I'm using xfree86 verssion 4.4.0
I do see a few errors in my log file...
    (EE) NVIDIA(1): Cannot read V_BIOS
(EE) NVIDIA(1): Unable to initialize the X Int10 module; the console may not
(EE) NVIDIA(1):      be restored correctly on your TV.
I'm not sure if these are serious errors or not, or if they have
anything to do with some open gl apps either freaking out with
the parachute thingy or just running totally choppy and freezing up.
Can anyone give me some inpute on how to go about solving this?

Thanks tons! reinstalling the nvidia driver fixed the problem. Well
I should say mostly fixed the problem. glxgears isback to kicking butt
on both monitors/cards. open gl works great on the secondary
gforce4 pci device. on my primary geforce3 agp device I still
get the sdl parchute thing with foobillard but that doesen't really
bother me. I'm alittle concerned about this message from the
    installer.

  • Please help - Totally locked out of T61

    Bottom line:
I am totally frozen out of my T61, stuck at the BIOS. I can apparently do absolutely nothing, including access info on the primary HD or the secondary HD in the DVD slot.
I now get this error after the laptop recognizes my fingerprint: <Error 0199 - System Security. Security password retry count exceeded>
The BIOS settings are at the bottom of this post, if that helps.
The only possible things that I know of that you could use to help me are:
The Lenovo does actually recognize my fingerprints, which apparently means zippo.
My two Windows administrator passwords worked find until this locked me out totally.
I do have hardware so that I can attach these two hard drives to other machines, where I have been able to read/write to these drives, at least until now.
    ===================
    HOPEFULLY RELEVANT HISTORY.
About a year ago I remember exploring the password functions on my T61. Probably getting too cute. But it never bit me on the butt until now. I am beginning to realize how much I didn't know then, learning today that there are 3 different passwords IN ADDITION to my Windows password. Oops.
It appeared today that my biometry hardware is getting dicey. Sometimes it would recognize this finger, other times not, sometimes that finger, then not. So I started wandering around in the security part of CSS, trying to see what I would have to do if the biometry froze up on me completely.
That is when I discovered that apparently I created a supervisor password. Apparently much worse, at one point in the last 5 hours of trying to figure out what was going on I typed in what I thought might be the correct supervisor password too many times.
My backup plan was apparently misguided and has failed - I have a second HD, with one of the partitions a bootable WinXP partition, but when I swap in that one (normally in the DVD slot) for the primary HD, this error STILL crops up and I am still frozen, can't get past the BIOS.
Smelling possible disaster, I was in the process of backing up all of the data on that HD to the second HD when my machine went into hibernation before it totally locked me out! Agh agh agh. It had filled up about 50 GB, my hope is that what I truly need is now on this secondary drive.
Rant: I can do NOTHING?! This has totally frozen me out of EVERYTHING? My T61 is TOAST? This is really me, the one-and-only-ever owner of this laptop, probably no one that was stupid enough to try to steal this semi-obsolete laptop could have screwed this up so totally. My incredulity is high. Doesn't anyone remember the reason for the UNDO function, or the purpose for "idiot proof"? I am close to dropping this Lenovo on its head to see if it has a change of heart or giving it ECT treatment, which would be equally helpful, but mostly thinking about buying a different very non-Lenovo laptop, yesterday. If I screwed up once, by thinking that more security was better than less, this machine should be more forgiving than this, especially if it recognizes my **bleep** fingerprint. At least Dell hardware was reliable, even if I couldn't understand tech support. Enough rant.

Any help humbly and gratefully accepted. I'm going to go blow off some steam but keep checking here to see if any kind soul will be merciful. I have just wasted too many hours that I needed to be spending on getting ready to teach on Monday. If I need to bail on that ****** laptop totally then it would be very helpful not to pour more hours down this rat-hole.
    Thank you,

Well I have a lot of success to report and a big mystery still unresolved.
I'm typing from my Lenovo!! I'm able to get into Windows, access all information (fingers crossed) on my hard drive, and found out that I had succeeded in backing up most of my important information to that secondary drive.
Before I reply to and digest your last two posts I need to take a sharp detour to want to make certain that I have successfully backed up everything off of my primary HD, and then I will come back here and report. So it will be a while until I post again, maybe even a few days because I have to catch up work that didn't happen today.
But I wanted to let you know what happened and what worked.
    ==================
This is how I succeeded in getting into my system.
First and possibly most importantly, I was documenting every step that I was taking in order to report in here, and so by doing that it occurred to me, "Why this step?" and not another.
These are the steps that I recorded in order to show that I kept getting to this 0199 error no matter what I did.
        > Turned on machine normally
        * It prompted me to "swipe finger to authorize access"
        > Swiped finger
        * It showed and skipped the 'power on' and 'hard drive' passwords, since I had successfully figured those out
        * It shows me a nasty looking screen saying:
              ERROR: 0199 System Security
              security password retry count exceeded
        * Press [F1] to get into setup utility
        > I press F1, get into setup utility, which is a total dead end where I can affect *nothing*
If I then reboot the whole process recycles
What I did that got me out of this mess was to press <Esc> instead of [F1]. It occurred to me that I didn't have to press F1.
Eventually, once the system got through some momentary confusion, mostly based upon the fact that the secondary drive wasn't hooked up, I got into Windows.
    ==================
So I am going to log out for a while until I feel reasonably secure that I have backed up my data. I will come back here to follow up, because I don't think that this 0199 error is going anywhere.
Also I think that I hit "this resolved the problem" by mistake a second ago on your last post. If I did then that was a mistake, because it would be better to do that for whichever one of these posts would point people best in the right direction. Would you help me out with that? Since you are the moderator you will have a better sense of that.
Of course it depends on how you define "the problem"! Getting back into my data, programs etc. certainly does seem like the real success. But this 0199 error is a real problem.
Should I split off a different thread about the 0199 error?
    =================
All of that said, hip hip hooray!
After a touch of exuberance I will get my nose back into the tedious work of backing up my machine.

  • I was messing arouond with the general settings and I turned on the voice (under General settings) and when the screen timed out, I can't get it to take my 4 number passcode to get into my ipad.  Please help!  I'm totally locked out!

I would appreciate any help I can get.  I was just messing around with the general setting on the ipad (64GB 3G...1st edition ipad), and did not realize that if I went under the general settings and changed the option to turn "on" the voice over, that it would require a double click on everything automatically.  I have my ipad set up to lock after 2 minutes on non-use, and when I tried to sign back in, it said that my 4 digit passcode was incorrect.  Then I tried to double click on each number, and that didn't seem to work.  The numbers 1-9 seemed to input ok, but a zero seemed to throw it off.  I have no idea if it has anything to do with it, but any help on getting back in to my ipad, I would greatly appreciate it, and I will be turning off that stupid voice over off as soon as I can.  I was just goofing off, and was not going to let it stay on permenantely, but I tried to go back under the settings immediately, and I couldn't easily find it, but if someone could help on just getting me back in....I would owe you a big favor!
    Thanks......freaking out in Mobile, AL!!

Touch or tap the field that you want to use/select and it should get a box around it ; then double-tap that field to activate/type it. Once you've entered your password you can do the same (i.e. touch to select, double-tap to activate) to gradually get into  Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver and turn it off.
So to enter your passcode you first need to tap the 'slide to unlock' button to hightlight it (it should get a box around it), then double-tap it to unlock it. Then for your passcode tap the digit that you want and it should get a box around it; then double-tap that digit to type it; and similar for the other three digits in your passcode.
The manual (http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad) also that you should be able to switch voice-over off by connecting to your computer's iTunes :
Turn VoiceOver on or off in iTunes: Select iPad in the iTunes sidebar. In the Options section of the Summary pane, click Configure Universal Access. Select VoiceOver, then click OK.
So select Configure Universal Access at the bottom of the Summary tab and set Seeing to Neither

  • My Ipod touch is freaking out!

This just started happening about a week ago...it seems to be ok when you first turn it on, but after a few moments..it freaks out. For instance, my keyboards--with whatever app, beit email or notes or a game..I try to type a letter--it types everything BUT that letter. And none of the erase buttons work to go back. On the Music--I keep trying to go to Playlists and it keeps flipping to Artists and pursues its own songs! Sometimes I don't even have to touch the Ipod--I just get my finger near it and it picks up the button it thinks I'm trying to touch and goes to whereever! It's like its possessed! It will cut in the middle or beginning of a song and go to whatever other song. It's not on shuffle or genious or whatever...I did a full reset by holding down the two buttons, but that only temporary fixes it. I can't type anything on it because it presses its own letters uncontrollably. Please help..this is a brand new Ipod I just got for Christmas. I didn't get it wet, I've been very careful with it. I do not want a refurb! I have lots of stuff on this 32G! :((

Can find my iPhone be turned on remotely? I had it turned off, and twice in the last month I've found that it is turned on and someone was tracking my location. I'm a little freaked out! Is there any way that someone could be turning "find my iPhone" on remotely? I was under the assumption that the only way to turn the service on was from my phone itself.. Is there any way that my phone is somehow resetting itself to a time when the app was turned on? I'm just grabbing straws here... I have no idea. I just know that the location arrow came on at the top of my phone, and it showed that someone was tracking my phone at that very moment... Any help would be appreciated!

Find my phone can only be enabled from the device itself.

  • [N97 mini] phone freaks out when I want to pick up...

Is there some sort of workaround, tweak or app available that can prevent my phone from freaking out when I want to receive a phone call? It is simply impossible to see who is calling because the display will not display anything for a few seconds when it's rotated. It is also not possible to use the slider keys to pick up or decline the call. Is there some way to prevent the display from rotating without disabling auto rotating all together?

    1. iTunes Menu > Store > Authorize This Computer
    2. iTunes Menu > Store > Sign in
    3. iTunes prefs > Devices > Prevent .... from syncing automatically
    4. With iTunes open, connect phone
    5. iTunes Menu > File > Devices > Transfer Purchases
    6. iTunes Menu > File > Devices > Backup
Now safe to sync.  You will lose any music/media on the phone that was NOT purchased from the iTunes Store (i.e. ripped CD's, MP3's from other sources)

Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Cache. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and slide to shut down. then hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears to start up.
You can also reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep button and home button at the same time until the Apple logo appears (takes about 10 seconds) - ignore the red slider.
