Safari issues "fixed" running under Rosetta

I have found that unless you run Safari under Rosetta there are compatability problems with some sites. In particular, I was unable to load images of my old computer to that auction site when running native but it works fine if I run Safari under Rosetta. I read elsewhere in this forum that there are Flash issues as well.
I have reported this to Apple so let's hope we get a new version or an OS update soon!

viking79,
Choose Get Info for the Safari app. Click the
checkbox "Open using Rosetta."
Jim R.
Is there a way I can make a shortcut for each method of opening Safari? So I could click one icon to launch it in Rosetta, and another to launch it native? Or it would be nice if I could just right click on the icon in the Dock and select Rosetta or native.
Thanks

  • Endianness when running under Rosetta?

    Hi all,
I have a Carbon application which is reading binary data from a file's resource and then has to work with that data. I know the endianness of the data on disk so I used to do a byte-swap when necessary (after using ReadPartialResource() to get the data into my variable).
I dutifully converted all those unconditional byte-swaps to CFSwapInt32BigToHost() in order to make sure that things work correctly when running on an Intel machine (since the application is not universal, the app is running under Rosetta on Intel machines).
Today I tested the application on an iMac Intel CoreDuo (in my local Apple Store) - things worked just fine. However, even the old version with unconditional byte-swapping works correctly...
Does this mean the "Host" on in Intel machine is still big endian? Anybody can corroborate this or point me to documentation of this behaviour?
    Thanks,
    Andreas

    Hi,
to support the other posters intention: I would not need an emulator, if any code could be run between to processor types. If I have an emulator, it has to give a complete emulation of one processor another. If VirtualPC would have used BigEndians, no wndows would have ever started on those. So the other way round I assume that Rosetta will think Big (in Endianess).

  • [Intel] Any list of Universal Binaries and apps running under Rosetta?

    Hi!
Sorry, I'm not sure about posting into the right group, but found no other place with similar threads...
I just try to figure out if all my apps will run under Rosetta or are available as Universal Binaries (and how much will the vendors charge for them). It's really a pain...
Do you folks know any web site or forum with a "Rosetta compatibility list" and an overview about available Universal Binaries?
I will not consider a change without e. g. a working backup solution (Retrospect), AppleWorks, EyeTV and a few other apps...

    Mike,
AppleWorks seems to work unter Rosetta (referring to

My greatest concern is Dantz' Retrospect and I haven't found a testing or even an information a Dantz' web site, yet.
But replacing my iBook with a MacBook wouldn't happen in the near future anyway...

  • Graphics apps running under Rosetta

I'm VERY unhappy with the speed of Rosetta. Graphic apps like PhotoShop 7 run at 30% that they do on my G4 iBook.
I didn't buy a new Mac to run applications at one-third the speed.
AND.... I notice that even with 1G of RAM, running just two or three applications (like Mail and Safari) takes up almost all the RAM. Same apps running on my iBook leave a LOT of RAM.
Anyone else seeing terrible speed from the new iMac?
17" iBook Duo Core   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I believe that it is on option when you order to get 1x1GB chip or 2x512MB chips. If you got it from a local Apple store, it will be 2x512MB.
I re-read your post and didn't realize that you already had 1GB. I used Photoshop last night and think that I confused speed with GUI responsiveness. Doing processor intensive things like unsharpen mask did seem a bit slower, but not too bad.

  • How to force Pages 2.0.2 to run under Rosetta?

I browsed Apple's Support site and found this document:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303120
I can find the check box for Safari 2.0.4, but I don't have this box for my Pages 2.0.2.
I have also confirmed with System Profiler that my Pages is an Univerisal Application, not a Power PC or Intel.
    Any suggestion?
(I need it because my Fiery printer driver is not Universal Binary yet and I need to access some of the features).
MacPro, iMac (intel), PowerBook G4, iBook G4, MacMini Core Solo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Joshua,
    Welcome to the forums!
I've not yet made the move to intel, so I can't check this out on my Mac. But while you wait for a driver update, you might want to check out the Gutenprint printer drivers for Mac:
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3
They are free, cover a very large range of printers, and may be able to run your Fiery (though it may not access all of its features).
    Hope this helps.

  • App running in Rosetta or Universal Binary

Is there a way to see if an app is running under Rosetta or Universal Binary AFTER you have launched it?
i am aware that get info for the app will tell you if it is a native UB or PPC app.
for Ex: i am running Adobe After Effects CS3 which is UB, but it will run under Rosetta if some 3rd party plugins are installed. I wanna be able to "check" to see if it is running under Rosetta, or universal.
    thx!

Utilities > Activity Monitor. In the window that displays the CPU processes the Kind column will show Intel or PPC. (By default this column is all the way on the right, so you need to widen the Activity Monitor window or scroll right to see it).
    Hope this solves your problem...

  • CS v1 under rosetta

will creative suite v1.1 or v1.3 run under rosetta?
I know cs2 will and fully planned to purchae it. After reading reviews it appears that most were not happy with the upgrades and consider the previous version to be superior and to run faster!
    Kalel

Hmmm well I have heard cs3 might be coming before the end of the year, but that is still going to delay my project. I have an old copy of elements 2.0 for mac.
It's is pretty old and I'm not even sure where it is. Could I use this under rosetta in the mean time?
Photoshop is what I use 80% of the time so this may get me by for several months, although that may just be wishfu thinking.
Does anyone know i there is a definitive list of what will run under rosetta or is it just a try and fail process?

  • Safari 4.03 running very slow!!

On a Macbook Pro late 2008 on 10.5.7 and Safari been running fine
However over the past 2 days its gone really slow for no reason, Im typing this on Google Chrome on a PC!!
    Whats happened???
I even updated to the latest 4.0.3 (5531.9) and still webpages load around 10-20 secs!!!! they were normally like lightning?!
My Pc is on the same net connection and that seems fine?
    Help

(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Wikipedia also has an interesting article about Open DNS:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

  • The MessagePerformanceUtils:totalTime issue in Flex 4 (rpc.swc) using LCDS 3.1 running under JDK1.6

We are facing an issue while using LCDS 3.1 running under JDK1.6 in Sun Solaris v5.10 OS & Adobe Flex 4.
    Scenario :-
    ===================================
As part of our Flex-based client-server application (with Java backend) we have a performance report generation module. Following flex framework class is used to calculate the performance of various layer of a typical server-based request-response cycle.
; (available in rpc.swc library file)
(for example : server time, cairngorm time, UI screen rendering time, UI event generation time etc).
The totalTime was working properly before upgrading the rpc.swc to Flex 4 ; However it broke after migrating to Flex SDK 4; The totalTime is now coming as negative junk value.
As we understand that the above Flex framework class method works in conjunction with LCDS running at server side on JDK.
We suspect that the new rpc.swc taken from Flex SDK 4 is causing the issue !
    System information :
    Web Server : Weblogic 11G
Operating System : Sun Solaris v5.10 OS running on Sparc hardware.
Flex : Adobe Flex sdk 4.0
Flash player : Adobe Flash Player 10
    Browser : Internet Explorer 8
    LCDS : 3.1
    JDK : JDK 1.6.0_14
    ===================================
Has anyone faced similar problem before ? Any help or direction would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Rabi
     mx.messaging.messages.MessagePerformanceUtils :totalTime

Nothing has changed in the Flex SDK sources for this class since sometime around 2008. Are you running against the same LCDS server as you were before you updated to Flex 4?  This certainly seems strange (and bad).  Do you see the same behavior with Flex 4.5?  What was the version of Flex you were using before switching to Flex 4.0?
If you can provide the additional information, we will look in to this.  A reproducable case that was a simple mxml application along with a simple destination config would help us narrow the problem.
    Sorry for the problems!

  • Safari issue

    Hi everyone.
Having installed an auto update of Safari and Itunes I now have problems with Safari. It will not open and a message says: Safari closed unexpectedly. I then ditched the prog. and downloaded it from the Website. But that didn't work either.
Has anyone else had this problem, if so how did you overcome it?

    Welcome to the forums!
If your Safari keeps crashing, or if you are updating Safari (or just have) and it is misbehaving:
N.B. Never delete Safari, never run it under Rosetta, don't use proxy settings, and don't change the application's name or move it from the top level of the Applications Folder to a sub-folder.
(If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall. Alternatively you can download Safari directly:
Safari 4.1.2 for Tiger can be downloaded here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1069
Safari 5.0.2 for Leopard (and Snow Leopard) can be downloaded from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1070
Make sure you download the correct version for your system.
Also, observe the recommended procedure for installing software: repair permissions and close all applications, install, then repair permissions again.)
Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta and which was updated to v.3.1.2, and now Tiger uses Safari 4.1.2 and Leopard uses Safari 5.0.2, as does Snow Leopard albeit a different version. If these latest versions of Safari are not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
(Trying to revert to a previous version of Safari can have repercussions, as previous versions of Safari used a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail, Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, but if you really want to do this post back for instructions on the safe way to do so.)
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Add-ons that have been frequently mentioned here, among others, for causing such problems are Piclens, Saft, AcidSearch and Pithhelmet, and the dreaded CT Toolbar. If you have them, trash them and go the developer's sites to see if new versions are available for the latest version of Safari on your current operating system.
You must also ensure that you have downloaded and installed all the correct version for your Mac of Security Updates. These require a restart and a permission repair.
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • Hard Disk/Library/InputManagers
    • Home/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates and updates to Safari (they can always be added back one-by-one later).
Lastly, the Safari updates require a restart of your Mac, and sometimes even a double restart is required.

  • Will safari 5 every run on my powerbook?

I have literally done almost everything to make it run. And still it can't load wepages, blue bar staying stack at 1/5 of the distance and nothing coming up.
Three times installed and uninstalled, deleted caches plists and all that.
    Nothing.
So, well, you can understand how disappointed I am.
I am to foregone to ask why it won't work, I am at the will it every stage...
(...and I am also nearing the stage of if it every does will it be a dog as a lot of people report?)

I can't seem to get my iMac (late 2009 model) into automatic sleep mode.  If I manually put it into sleep I don't have any issues.
I used to solve the issue by running "PleaseSleep" application but that doesn't work anymore since Lion. I now want to fix the underlying problem.
I'm not running any weird background processes and in my energy saver settings I've tagged "put the hard disk to sleep when possible:, "allow power button to put computer to sleep" and "automatically reduce brigthness". All pretty standard.
Is there anyone who can give me some pointers ?

Today I solved the same problem for my iMac running Snow Leopard. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3008791#15947706. The method may help you, too.
For me it was the DynDNS Updater preventing my iMac from automatically entering sleep mode.
To my knowledge the cause of this sleep problem can only be a peripheral device or a process. So I suggest to first unplug all peripherals and test whether that's the cause. If not, I suggest to terminate one process after another and to test automatic entering of sleep mode after each. Start with user processes; continue with system process if necessary.
At least that's the way I found the offending process. Fortunately, I was able to change the configuration of that process to allow again automatic entering of sleep mode.
    Good luck!

  • Safari 2.0.4 under 10.4.7 jerky scrolling

This topic is also being reported on several other forums.
I have confirmed the problem on 3 different intel based machines (haven't tried a PPC based machine).
Safari 2.0.3 under 10.4.6 scrolls smoothly, but Safari 2.0.4 under 10.4.7 scrolls terribly. Try www.apple.com/macbookpro as an example. People have reported that copying the older version of Safari and running it under 10.4.7 fixes the problem. Hopefully a fix will be here soon.

I figured it out. I downloaded the 10.4.11 update and installed it off my desktop.
