Safari launches, but no visible page opens

As of about 5 hours ago, Safari will no longer display an open web page under my user account settings. The app does launch, but nothing appears on the desktop, in spite of the fact that web pages appear to open [that is, when I quit the app I get the dialog 'Safari is about to close x number of pages--proceed?']. However, nothing is visible on the desktop. Safari continues to launch normally on other user accounts on this machine, and Firefox will run normally under my account. Suggestions?

I have the exact problem! In fact when this happens, and it just started this week, I can File Open New Window...then when nothing happens, and I Quit Safari, it will ask if I want to close 2 (or 3 or however many times I've tried to open a new window). Also, there was audio playing on a website last night and the audio continued, but the windows disappeared.. So, there is something that's making the window disappear, but not actually close the windows. Only a full Restart fixes this, and then it happens again.
(it may have something to do with a flash or other plugin, but I haven't been able to isolate this yet)

  • Safari launches but won't open a window

I'd set up Safari for my son under his own profile and it was working great with Parental Controls. When I went in one day to update his allowed sites, Safari launched but wouldn't open a window.  I could access preferences, reset, etc., but it wouldn't open a new window and when I tried to open a tab, it loaded at the bottom of the screen for a split second and then crashed.  I've deleted all the safari files, re-installed, downgraded - the downgrade worked but the Parental Controls didnt work.
Now what?  None of the other Parental Control apps I've tried work as well as Safari's.

  • Safari launches, but won't open any webpage, including Safari

Installed Safari. Installation seemed uneventful, but when I attempt to launch Safari the window and menu bars will open but that's it. It won't open Safari's home page or any other. All I get is a blank window. What did I do wrong?

I have no idea how to deal with a "proxy issue." All I get is the Safari opening window and toolbar and the line, Loading "http://www.apple.com/startpage/" at the top, but it does nt open. I think I'm going to have to remove Safari. I use it on my other computers, but is simply won't work on this one and I'd love to know why. I tried the "develop" suggestion suggested by another person but all I get is a blank window with "Web Inspector" at the tip. I'm stumped, but appreciate efforts to help. Even if I have to dump Safari, I'd sure like to know what the glitch is. I've installed it twice.

  • Safari Launching to Last Web Page that was Open

After upgrading to Lion, Safari launches to the last Safari page that was open when it was last closed.  I want it to launch to the homepage that I have selected.

In Lion, by default all apps will now try to start up in the same state they were in when you quit them.
To turn this off, go to System Preferences, General and uncheck the box toward the bottom. ("Restore windows...")
To prevent this from happening with just Safari, either close all windows before quitting, or hold option when quitting, or hold shift when launching from the dock.
I hope all that makes sense.

  • Safari launches, but I can't get a new page to show

We have five accounts on an iMac for our family. I can't get Safari to display a new page (or any page) on one of my kid's account. What could be the problem?

    Hi
There may be a problem with one of that account's Safari files.
Open his User Account and then the Finder:
First, move the com.apple.safari.plist file found via the Finder>User Library>Preferences folder to the desktop and restart Safari. If Safari is stable, you'll need to reset their custom preferences in Safari, as well as any special settings in the Edit (spelling) or View menu (custom icons, status bar, etc.) If no change, move the file back to its original location, replacing the newly created file, then try the next suggestion.
If the above doesn't work, go to the User Library>Caches>Safari and move that file to the desktop. Same routine as the previous step (restart Safari, etc). If no go, move the folder back etc.

  • Safari launches but hides window

Okay, I just came home a week or so ago to find out that my mother can't use safari on her computer. Meanwhile, I have no problem using it on mine, a laptop running windows vista.
My mother had gotten a new computer, HP 2009m, as it says on the monitor. She's tried removing Safari and redownloading it and that doesn't work.
It'll open Safari up, but it flies off to the right of the monitor and hides from view, even though you can preview it in the menu bar at the bottom of the screen. she isn't having this problem with any other browsers.

    No problem.
If it's a new PC, I'm assuming she won't have any Bookmarks or Top Sites to speak of (especially if the browser has been grumpy from an early stage of proceedings). So I'd be inclined to go for the "so much for subtlety" approach and clear out all of the Safari settings and preferences files for her usual user account on the PC.
On Windows 7, I'd use the following procedure.
    (1) Quit Safari if you have it open
    (2) Go *Start > Open.*
    (3) In the Organize menu, click *Folder and Search Options.*
    (4) Click the View tab.
    (5) Make sure that *Show hidden files and folders* is selected.
    (6) Click OK.
    (7) Go *Start > Computer.*
    (8) In Computer open *Local Disk C:*
    (9) Open the Users folder.
    (10) Open the folder with the name of the Windows 7 user account in which Safari isn't displaying properly.
    (11) Open the AppData folder.
    (12) Open the Roaming folder.
    (13) Open the *Apple Computer* folder.
    (14) Rename the Safari folder "Safari1" and drag it out onto the Desktop.
    (15) Open the Preferences folder.
    (16) Drag the com.apple.Safari plist file out onto the Desktop.
    (17) Go back into the AppData folder.
    (18) Open the Local folder.
    (19) Open the *Apple Computer* folder.
    (20) Rename the Safari folder "Safari2" and drag it out onto the Desktop.
Now launch Safari again. This should rebuild those preference files/folders. (The welcome to Safari thingy will probably play again .)
Does Safari display normally this time?

  • Safari launches but no window appears

recently, but i can't exactly track since when, safari launches regularely but no window appears, or after a reboot it opens and disappears after a little while. has anybody been affected and know a reason and solution?

I have the exact problem! In fact when this happens, and it just started this week, I can File Open New Window...then when nothing happens, and I Quit Safari, it will ask if I want to close 2 (or 3 or however many times I've tried to open a new window). Also, there was audio playing on a website last night and the audio continued, but the windows disappeared.. So, there is something that's making the window disappear, but not actually close the windows. Only a full Restart fixes this, and then it happens again.
(it may have something to do with a flash or other plugin, but I haven't been able to isolate this yet)

  • Safari unwanted popups "Back, reload page, open in dashboard, etc..How to turn off?

Using Safari 8.0 and OS X Yosemite,  repeated pop ups while scrolling with magic trackpad, - "Back, Reload Page, Open in Dashboard, etc.". and scrolling stopped. I have to hit esc to resume scrolling. How can I turn this off?

    Hi mikesy,
Based on the description of the menu you are seeing, it sounds like you may be inadvertently activating the Safari right click menu. If this is incorrectly configured or too sensative, you should be able to change it in the Trackpad preferences; you may find the following articles helpful:
    OS X Yosemite: Right-click
OS X Yosemite: Use an Apple Magic Trackpad

  • Safari launches, but seems to be invisible...

I use Firefox and Safari, and all of a sudden Safari crashed once, and when I tried to reopen after a force quit, it seems to launch but I can't actually see a window. The menu bar shows Safari, and I can quit, but nothing else will work to switch to Safari and make it show up. I deleted it, AppZappered it, and redownloaded and installed, but same issue. The system thinks it's running, but there's no actual window. Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Brian

    Hi Brian
have you tested in a new account to see if safari works there ?
a common reason for such a problem is 3rd party add-ons, toolbars, extensions etc.
Check to see if you have any of these
    HD/Library/Application Support/Conduit
    HD/Library/InputManagers/CTLoader/
    HD/Library/ScriptingAdditions/ct_scripting.osax
and trash them if you do
some versions - you may see these too
    HD/Library/Receipts/ctloader.pkg
    HD/Library/Receipts/<Toolbar name>.pkg
    HD/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/CT2285220.bundle

  • Safari launches, but won't open windows.

Safari will launch on my computer but will not open any windows. It is only on my account, not those of family members.  Any suggestions?  Thank you!

If any Safari extensions are installed, disable them and test. Otherwise proceed as follows:
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, perhaps including wireless networking on certain Macs. If you usually connect to the Internet via WiFi, and it doesn’t work in safe mode, connect using an Ethernet cable. If you can’t do that, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and perform a safe login, as follows: Enter your credentials at the login screen, then hold down the shift key and click the “Log in” button. Keep holding the key until the menu bar appears. In this mode, your login items, among other things, won’t load.
In safe mode, test again. Same problem(s) now?
After testing, reboot (if you booted in safe mode) or log out/log in (if you performed a safe login) as usual.

  • Safari launches, but will not load pages

I've been running Snow Leopard since it came out, and Safari has been working fine, so I don't think this is an issue related to that.
Today it became terribly slow. Now when I launch it it gets stuck on trying to load my home page, or if I try launching a webpage from a URL in Mail, the URL will come up at the top of the window above the Navigation toolbar; i.e. above the URL field, but not in the URL field. In this latter case, the "Loading" does not even appear. In either case, I get the spinning color wheel. There's no way to clear the cache or history from within Safari, in the event that might be part of the problem (can these be done from the Finder?).
I ran Disk Utility. No problems with Permissions or the Disk.
What can I do to get it working again?

/Library/InputManagers has a folder Smart Crash Reports, last modified Nov 30, 2006. It doesn't let me trash it. There is no Home/Library/InputManagers.
    I deleted:
    LastSession.plist
    History.plist
    WebpageIcons.db
    There was no Form Values.
Other items in the same folder which I didn't touch are:
    Bookmarks.plist
    data03a9.0bf
    Downloads.plist
    HistoryIndex.sk
    Icons.db
    LocalStorage [folder]
    SearchProviders.plist.signed
    I deleted Cookies.plist
In that same folder there's also these items that I didn't touch:
    Cookies.plisttmp_1510.dat
    Cookies.plisttmp_13600.dat
After doing this, Safari is still stuck trying to load my homepage.

  • Double-clicking - OS 9 apps launch, but documents don't open

On my G4 dual 450MHz PowerMac with OS 10.4.3 and Classic...when I double-click on a Microsoft Word 2001 document or a Quark 5 document (an document created by a classic app) the program that created the file starts up - like Word or Quark, but the window for the document does not show up.
So in the application I have to go to File->Open to open my Word docs or Quark docs.
Also, I have the Quark 5 and Word 2001 icons in my doc. Strangly, if I drag my Quark & Word documents on to their respective dock icons, the programs start up, but still the document's don't open in a window.
When booting in OS 9, double-clicking on Word & Quark documents opens up the app and the document.
I tried rebuilding the OS 9 desktop from System Preferences. Also rebuilt the desktop using TechTool. Ran DiskWarrior on the hard drive. Cleaned out a bunch of caches with Onyx. I used DiskUtility to 'repair permissions'
    Any suggestions?

I do think the docs are meant to open from double-clicking and in all seriousness, I think there's just at least one layer too much going on for the Mac to keep track and the poor user can't get round that.
My Mac has never remembered to open the XPress documents I double-clicked, even though it launches Classic 9 and XPress.
If double-click still fails to open a doc when its application is already running that's a different matter…

  • My airport says i have an internet connection but no web page opens!!help!

I recently unplugged my imac and brought it to a friends to use. I used his wireless to surf the internet no problem. Now A few days later, I brought my computer back home and plugged everything in, I double clicked on safari and when it opened there was no website and I recieved the classic error "You are not connected to the internet."  But the funny thing is My wireless says im connected. My airport has full bars, i have full service, so i would think  websites would be working, BUT THERE NOT! I tried everything as well (Network diagnostics, Resetting safari, etc.) But nothing seems to work. Do you think its my Mac or maybe a problem that i need to address with my internet provider? Thank you to anyone in advance who helps...PLEASE HELP!    I have an MAC OS X  10.5.8..2.66GHz Intel core 2 duo  4 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3

Airport may have 4 bars however all that indicates is you have a Wi-Fi signal it does not mean you have an Internet connection though. You may have an issue with your modem, easiest thing to do is power cycle your router and modem then retry.

  • IPhoto launches but the main page does not show

Was taking photos from iphoto to iweb and then cannot find iphoto when I tried to go back to the photos after working on iweb. Tried relaunching but nothing. The only thing is when you quit iphoto from the dock the main page appears with a blue line (the last photos I used) around it and you cannot access a photo at all. Has this happened to anyone else? If you have a solution please explain as if I not too Mac literate.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Are you using Spaces? If so, disable them and se if you can find the iPhoto Window that way.
Alternatively: trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
