Safari madness

It's kind of alarming reading about all these problems with Safari. For the first time since I've owned a Mac (7 months) I've started having some myself. We've all done the fixes but nothing seems fixed. I'm getting the color wheel often and doing forced quits on almost a daily basis for the last few day. I'm also getting
"Safari unexpectedly quit" messages as well. It's very depressing but I guess it's the price one pays to have this technology. It's a wonderful but very flawed system that all the Apple "geniuses" can't seem to resolve. In a related matter:
I went to speakeasy.net which gives you a free test of how fast your computer is. I discovered that my computer runs at 4.6 megabits per sec when I'm paying Road Runner to deliver 5 megabits per sec. Time Warner is sending out a tech to see what the problem is. The lack of speed doesn't cause crashing but it does slow things down.

Dylanmusic,
Could you please post a crash report to see if we can help ?

they can be quit helpful, once read. Did you submit them to apple as well with the bug report?

  • Lion + Safari made Google Earth stop working properly

Upgraded to Lion now Google Earth Plugin won't work on Safari anymore. It works perfectly on Firefox, Chrome and Opera. I would like to keep using...please help. Thanks.
It worked FLAWLESSLY (Safari & Google Earth) on Snow Leopard before upgrading to Lion.

No problem using Google Earth with Safari 5.1.1 on Lion v10.7.2 here.
    Perhaps the preferences are corrupted.
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences
Move the following files to the Trash.
    com.google.GoogleEarthPlugin.plist
    com.GoogleEarthPlus.plist
    com.GoogleEarthPlus.plistlockfile
Restart your Mac. Try launching Google Earth.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
For Lion:   To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library

  • Why does safari not work on my MacBook pro when I close it and forget to quit safari?

So I'll close my MacBook with safari "X"ed out but not quit. When I open my MacBook up about an hour or so later, I'll click on safari mad it doesn't load... It's not that big of a deal, it's just annoying to have to restart my computer every time I want to go on safari.

Try resetting Safari. From the Safari menu select "Reset Safari..." and check at least the two boxes "close all Safari windows" and "remove all website data".
Quit Safari from the Safari menu.
Hold a Shift key as you launch Safari again from the Dock.

  • How do I get Safari to recognize changed keyboard shortcuts?

I am trying to setup a simple, memorable keyboard shortcut for switching between tabs (a useful feature that I wish Safari made easier).  I wanted to do option+arrow key.  So I sent to System Preferences>Keyboard>Keyboard Shortcuts and created the shortcut.
The new shortcut shows up in Safari when I drop down the Window menu, but the shortcut doesn't actually work.  When I hit option+L or R arrow key, the window does not switch to the next or previous tab.
I even went back to Keyboard Shorcuts in System Preferences and created another "All Applications" shortcut with the same command.  It still doesn't work.
Any thoughts?  Has anyone successfully changed the "Select Next Tab" or "Select Previous Tab" commands in Safari?
    Thanks!

some shortcuts just don't work in some apps, and safari won't allow arrow keys with a single modifier (these shortcuts do other things in text fields).  it's best to pick something memorable but unique to avoid any conflicts.

  • Safari's Toolbar keeps disappearing.

    This is really odd.
I tend to keep a lot of pages open in Safari. Usually I have about four windows with about a half dozen tabs in each window.
Lately I'm finding that, when I bring a window to the front and try to navigate in one of the tabs, I'm not able to because the whole toolbar is missing. There's just an empty space between the window title and the Bookmarks Bar. This empty space will collapse and expand if I select Show/Hide Toolbar from the View menu, but the buttons and the address and search fields don't reappear. This applies to every tab in the window, but all the other windows are fine, and if I open a new window, it appears with its toolbar intact. I can even drag all the tabs from the old window into the new window, and the toolbar remains visible. It only seems to disappear while the window is in the background.
Is anybody else seeing this? I couldn't find any posts about it, but it's the kind of thing that someone might just think they did something wrong, and closing and re-openeing Safari made the problem go away.

    HI David,
    Try Safari Mainenance
Just emptying the cache and resetting Safari might help.

  • Weird thing in Safari

Not sure why, Safari just started doing this weird thing.
After I click on an item in eBay, or click any page on any site, when I 'swipe' back using my Apple Magic Mouse, the page jams a few pixels back and it freezes, mouse won't click on anything in Safari after that. I have to quit and start again.
I trashed system pref plist for Safari, made no difference.
I repaired permissions (three times) and get the following, anyone know what this means or why Safari has started doing this or how to fix it?
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .Repaired “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”
    Thanks

    1. From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Test.
    2. There are reports that this problem can be solved by simply restarting, or by resetting the PRAM.
Repairing permissions is a waste of time.

  • CustomUserAgent and Safari 7

    Hi,
I upgraded My MacBook Pro to OSX 10.9 hence my safari was upgraded to 7 with good expectation.
First thing I observed that Safari 7 does not take my CustomUserAgent from ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist.
I stopped safari, made manually CustomUserAgent entry in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist  and restarted safari again but Safari does not take CustomUserAgent and continued with Default value setting in Developer Menu. Same setting used to work  with Safari 6.0.5/6.1.
Could you guys help me to figure out this issue?
    Regards,
    Anand Choubey

  • Why won't safari load facebook

I was using facebook today and tried to use the video chat feature. The other user did not have it set up so it did not complete the call. I went to another site but when I tried to return to facebook I got the safari error that in can not open because the server is not responding. I reset safari, made sure extensions are off, deleted all history and caches, tried it in firefox, and tried it in safe mode. Nothing seems to work. All my other websites open fine.

If the server is not responding you cannot do anything.  That's is like getting an error message that the person won't answer your phone call.  What can you do?  Try again later.

  • 10.5 Safari 3 - Links in new windows...in new tabs instead?

In the Safari 3 preferences there's an option to open links from other applications in new tabs instead of new windows.
Is there a way to set things up BY DEFAULT to open links that open in new windows in new TABS instead?
As a relatively recent windows to mac convert, I hate having to hold command and click links to open them in new tabs. FF and Opera both have options to allow all new window links in new tabs instead and I'd really like to see this option in Safari... I HATE having multiple windows open in a BIG way. I was really hoping they'd have an option for this by the time Safari made it out of beta.

By now you may have spotted another thread that asked the same. The answer is no. You could give feedback to Apple and ask for the enhancement.

  • Hot Keys to switch tabs intermittently stop working (Apple-Option-[)

I've been used to using Apple/Command + Shift + [ to go to next and previous tabs for ages. I used to use Apple + Shift + Arrow keys, but when Safari made the brackets the new default, I figured I'd update.
I seem to keep having an issue multiple times a day where Safari stops responding to the Apple + Shift + Bracket shortcuts. When this happens, Ctrl + Tab still works, and I just discovered that Apple + Shift + Left/Right Arrows also still work.
I can't seem to trace the moment where they stop working, or when they return. Restarting the browser doesn't seem to help. Nor does sleeping and re-awaking, although a restart does. However, even without a restart, they do eventually come back.
I detest input managers and unsupported plugins, so neither are installed. I have NO keyboard shortcuts configured in SysPrefs. I have no idea what could be the cause. Is anyone else experiencing this?

The Mac inherently keeps all input methods active, such that you could type alternate keys on alternate keyboards.
If you have third party add-ons that might change the way Bluetooth works, those would be the primary suspects.
Be sure all your Drivers are completely up-to-date, and batteries in battery-powered devices are still strong.
Bluetooth uses the same part of the frequency spectrum (but a different modulation technique) as cheap WiFi Routers, baby monitors, and microwave ovens. if you live in a busy apartment building, there may be very high levels of interference.

  • Unable to upload photos to any website

I am unable to upload any photos to any websites.
When I try to upload photos I just get the rainbow wheel and I either have to force quit (it shows the browser in "not responding") or if I leave it long enough it will "quit unexpectedly".
The uploading process encounters error as soon as I hit upload and it opens the box, I am not even able to choose where I would like to upload from.
I have tried this using the browsers: Safari, Opera, and Firefox.
I have tried to upload photos to facebook, craigslist, shutterfly (I can upload to shutterfly using their extension in iphoto), walmartphoto, and a few other b/s/t forums.
As far as trouble shooting I have erased cookies, emptied cache, deleted my history, shut down all applications, restarted my computer, done a virus scan, reset preferences, unblocked and reblocked pop-ups, reset safari, made sure software was up to date, uninstalled and reinstalled Opera and Firefox...
This has been going on a few months now so I have searched people having similar issues and have tried a few of their tactics but it seems as if their issues were to a specific website so I have not found anything that even slightly improves the issue yet.

    Hello CherriNicole,
While researching what could be causing performance issues with Safari, I found this article I feel will be helpful.
Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3230?viewlocale=en_US
    Resolution
Use the add-on's uninstaller, if possible
    Quit Safari.
Remove any unsupported third-party add-ons you've installed (see if the add-on's installer includes an uninstall feature).
    Open Safari again.
If these steps fix the issue you were having, check the website of the software's developer to see if there is an updated version available, or avoid using the add-on.Manually uninstall third-party add-onsIf the software doesn't have an uninstall feature, quit Safari and try manually removing the third-party add-on files. These files are usually installed in one or more of the following locations:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
    /Library/Input Methods/
    /Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/ScriptingAdditions
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
    ~/Library/Input Methods/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/ScriptingAdditions
The first four locations listed are in the root-level Library on your hard disk, not the user-level Library in your Home folder. The tilde (~) represents your Home folder.
To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library.
To find the Home folder in Mac OS X v10.6 and earlier, open the Finder and choose Go > Home. Then, click the Library folder.
If the issue is resolved by removing items from the above locations, return the items one-at-a-time and test Safari. That way you can determine which item is causing the issue. Once identified, remove the problematic item and put the others back. Check for updates to the items that are found to cause issues, or report the issue to the add-on developer.
Note: When removing items from the above locations, do not put them in the Trash and empty the Trash. If removing the items does not resolve the issue, you can put them back where they came from. In Mac OS X v10.6 or later, you can use the Put Back feature of the Trash to automatically put them back where they came from.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • Solutions To Apple's Many Little But Overall Annoying Fails in Mountain Lion?

I am one of the people who found the Apple Mountain Lion upgrade surprisingly smooth for something I bought and installed on the first day.
What I am finding ironic is how Apple is making me want to kill Mountain Lion (no real animals were harmed in the making of this post).
How many of you have had these problems or found solutions to them:
    - Safari made less usable by removal of things like Activity and other download etc. Tracking windows.
    - Safari will fail to scroll with a mouse, trackpad or page up or down keys/buttons on sites like FaceBook. Restarting Safari makes problem go away. I don't think FaceBook developers quickly make changes in synch with my Safari quit/starts.
    - How D**B and dangerous to have Mail force an iCloud account as the FROM address even when replying to emails received at other email addresses. Especially problematic when replying to office emails on personal Mac and sending out your private email address to business/colleagues. Or if you had an anonymous-type generic address for some communications you will inadvetently expose your true identity.
    - How st**id and irritating not to be able to change the sort order of accounts in Mail pop-up menus or preferences.
    - Never had Time Machine give a "is already in use" error and failing to backup, but it started today.
    - It is even more unintuitive to try to manage printer queues than it was before.
    - Messages app can be deadly to CPU usage.
    - Regular hangs on shutdown after unmount of /home etc. failed errors.
    - Spotlight will often display least used apps instead of most used apps when typing a name. E.g. KEYC will always show me KeyCue instead of KeyChain...
    - How ironic that the same week that Apple buys Authentec (I use their finger print readers on macs and pcs) their software stops working on Mac OS X. LOL
    - Apple used to give a consistent user experience. But that is increasingly not the case. Even in small things like Dictation in ML vs Dictation in iOS. In iOS you hit the dictate button, speak, and hit space or the same button and it translates the voice to text. In Mac the similar function erases your recorded audio if you hit Space rather than the command key.
I could go on, but you get the idea. I have been a Mac evangelist (not an Apple employee) since Mac came out. But, the more other companies are getting their act together, the more inconsistent Apple experiences are becoming. Steve Jobs would be not be proud.
Happy to be corrected or given solutions to these issues above.
    Imran Anwar

Ralph, you are not adding any value nor providing solutions with advice like "go back to Lion" and I'd rather not waste time in a flame war. I must however make two observations...
    - I am surprised you say you have not seen any posts about Messages' high CPU usage... because a quick search and click on the FIRST one I found showed YOUR own reply....
    Ralph Johns (UK)
    Ferndown UK
Re: Why is Messages using up so much CPU?
    Feb 24, 2012 5:58 PM (in response to MacFanBoy1997)
so kindly look through your own posts before obviously incorrectly claiming you have not heard about an issue, and getting argumentative when people like me are seeking solutions. If you do not have a solution, do not offer one.
    - Regarding your not having the problem in Mail also, again, Good For You. Others too had the problem...  https://discussions.apple.com/message/19140276#19140276 and it was in https://discussions.apple.com/message/19038539 that I found a solution, which is not very intuitive. To change the order of pop-up listing of accounts you do not go into Preferences, where one would assume such, ummmm, preferences should be, but drag the order the folders are displayed in the emails window. In any case, glad to have resolution on that. But have not tried it yet. I'll try it when I get to my Mountain Lion machine (am on a Lion iMac right now).
    - Lastly, I am sure you have helped some people in the past (maybe even me somewhere along the way considering your Level 9 etc.) but advising me not to use Mountain Lion because I am pointing out flaws, bugs, poor design, or removed functionality clearly is not helpful. In that case, of course, the best advice I'd give you would be not to give advice.
I did not read some other follow up emails that I have since arrived from other people, so hopefully some of them actually offer solutions to these or other issues I posted about.
    Regards,
    Imran

  • Firewall in set access mode let "allow incoming connections" without me

I have set up my firewall to allow incoming connections for a file sharing client under "Set Access for specific services and applications", and I noticed that Skype, iChatagent, and Safari all included themselves to be set under allow as well a week later. I did not enter this in manually. How did this occur?

I am quite befuddled by the 10.5 firewall. Maybe I'm thinking too much, but I've read all the documents I could get a hold of, and I still find it confusing and often conflicting in the specifics.
For starters, there is the cryptic remark of ""Mac OS X normally determines which programs are allowed incoming connections. Select this option if you want to allow or block incoming connections for specific program." Presumedly the "option" it is referring to is the "Set access for specific services..." option, which implies that the "normally determines" circumstance refers to the first two options. But, "Allow all incoming connections" supposedly allows everything, and "Allow only essential services" supposedly blocks everything (except for two or three things). Where in either of these cases would OS X be "determining" anything, and if it does, what criteria is it using?
The next thing I don't understand: when the option is set to "Set access for specific services", which applications does OS X explicitly ask permissions for? It seems that it since the firewall is only blocking incoming connections, it should only ask for applications that look like they want to accept incoming connections (i.e., server applications). But for me, it asks for permission for applications like Cyberduck (ftp app), and Microsoft Word 2004. In addition, the poster above mentioned Safari made it onto the list. To me, neither Cyberduck nor Safari should matter, since they are both purely client applications that only receive incoming data when it is requested by them, no? And what business does Word have in wanting to accept incoming connections? (maybe this is a question for Microsoft, not Apple).
Well, I have a list of other questions about half a page long, but if anyone can help with those two, it would be a big help.

  • Go Daddy Position on Domain Issue

I received this email from Go Daddy vis a vis the domain forwarding issue:
Q: What is the deal w/Safari Browsers and Forwarded Domains?
A: Safari made an update last week (v2.0.2) that is causing problems with forwarding domain names.
Some users have been able to get to the forwarded site by clearing the browser cache and trying again.
We found that using the Apple Network Utilities to ping the domain name will also resolve the problem.
Currently, there is not a fix available from our end.
Can someone please comment on this?

This issue is already addressed in extensive detail in another thread, see

  • Update 3.1.1 external calendar issues (and profile manager)

So I did the 3.1.1 update and now I am of course regretting it. I am having the non functional profile manager issue but, more importantly my calendar server is not communicating to any of the devices outside the network. I have a firewall in place so the question is did apple add a port to this update? I ran wireshark and couldn't find anything new.
    Help!

    How long between syncing?
This link provides the data included with the backup.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
If you received or placed a call, the same for SMS/MMS, used Safari, made any changes to contact info and calendar events, there were changes to the data included with your iPhone's backup. If there were no changes to any of the data included with your iPhone's backup since the last sync, your iPhone's backup wouldn't be updated.
Does your iPhone's Camera Roll include a number of photos that haven't been imported by your computer followed by being deleted from the Camera Roll, or have been imported but not removed from the Camera Roll after the import process is complete?
    2. The other symptom I've noticed (that commenced with the prior OS version) is that the phone is hesitating sometimes and won't respond for up to a minute to screen inputs-- seems to be preoccupied with some task it wasn't doing before.
Any change after powering your iPhone off and on and/or after doing an iPhone reset when this occurs?
