Safari, mail, and ichat disappeared

Hi all,
I quit safari recently (just command Q) then shut the screen. After returning to it hours later, I only get a '?' over the icon. I've tried to search for it in finder (spotlight) but can't find anything. It seems like Safari, Mail, and iChat have all disappeared?
Has anyone experienced this or know a solution?

Hi,
Use your installation disk to reinstall them as described in this article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1442?viewlocale=en_US
and then re-download the 10.5.6 combo updater for your system to update everything to the correct version.
The likeliest cause is that someone had access to your machine and deleted them for whatever reason.

  • Sound alerts not working in Mail and Ichat apps since upgrade to 10.4.9

I just noticed my Sound alets not working in Mail and Ichat apps since upgrade to 10.4.9.
I'm using soundsticks which is playing sounds thru quicktime, itunes, etc but my alert sounds for getting new emails and IM messages is not working. I get the quick "white flash" on the screen instead. I checked the prefs on both apps and it is set to give me the alert sound, I can even test it in the ichat pref when I change the new message alert sound it will play it thru my speakers but when I get a new message in either app it just gives me the white flash.
I'm read that it can be an issue of not having the balance in the system sound pref set the middle, so I checked that, restarted, all that but still no luck.
I really like the sound alert features because I can be in another part of my house, turn the sound way up and I'll know when one of my clients is trying to reach me but now I can't do that.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Safari, Mail and Disk Utility won't run unless Font Book is Open

Recently Safari, Mail and Disk Utility would crash and spin and the "Application Not Responding" line would appear when I checked the program in the dock. After following a variety of tips from other Apple users, I finally got the programs to run. However, I started them while Font Book was open and now they only work when it remains open. I've been using Apple/Mac products since the beginning of time and have never seen anything like this. I've repaired permissions, throught out preferences, etc., etc. and can't resolve this problem. Please, someone, help me.

    Hello buhrow:
That makes two of us that go back to the beginning of time and have never seen anything like that. Have you run the fontbook applications to eliminate duplicates and check for corrupt fonts? Offhand, I cannot understand why just having a program open would prevent other programs from crashing.
If nothing else works, you might want to consider an archive and install (after backing up, of course):

  • Mail and iChat don't launch after Software Update

Since updating the DST updates and Quicktime and Security 2007-002 updates, Mail and iChat do not launch. The icon bounces once in the dock; that's it.
I have repaired permission and checked the disc using Disc Utility from the OS X Install disc.
I also notice that Software Update 2007-002 remains in my list of updates to download and install. But I did it. And when I try to do it again, the install process stops immeately after it starts and the install app quits.

OK Jeremy, this may help or may not, but it will do no harm.
Power down both DSL and Airport, and your Mac (or at least log out).
Wait about one minute, power up DSL, let it pass some configuration routine (may take another minute or so), power up Airport, wait another minute and fire up the old Mac.
Open chat and mail, put it to sleep and wake it up again.
    Did this improve things?

I have just installed iOS 7 on my iPhone 4. Why can't I open my safari, mail and calculator?

  • Mail and iChat suddenly don't open...

    Greetings everyone!
So my sister comes to visit from Texas. I converted her to Mac a few years ago. Her iBook is as follows:
    1.2 GHz PowerPC G4
    256MB RAM
    OS X 10.4.11
Software update is up to date. Everything was working great until yesterday's software update. The following items were installed:
Java for Mac OS X 10.4 Release 6, version 1.0
    Quicktime, version 7.3.1
Security Update 2007-009 (PowerPC), version 1.1
Now after this update, Mail and iChat won't open anymore. Mail icon bounces three times in the dock, iChat icon bounces twice in the dock, but neither opens. Tried repairing permissions, but no help.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Ty

Also, if this helps, I clicked 'Open as a log file' in the installed updates window and also got a console log to open. Here are the results of that log:

  • Line Spacing In Mail and iChat

I recently downloaded and installed the 10.6.3 Combo upgrade. As a result, the line spacing in both Mail and iChat have gone crazy! The font size is correct, but the spacing is huge. So, it both reading and writing emails nearly impossible.
I am not sure if it is something in the Upgrade, or something in my system. I have tried everything I know: Emptying All Caches, Deleting plist files, Repairing Permissions.Nothing seems to help. Which leads me to believe that something was altered in the 10.6.3 Upgrade to cause this problem.
Anyone have the same problem? Anyone have a solution?

Have you added, removed, or otherwise altered any fonts?
    Ernie

  • Safari, Mail, and Software Update won't launch

I've tried downloading Safari 3 but my iMac needed to be 10.4+. As a result my Safari, Mail , and Software Update will not launch. When I click either one it will just do 1 or 2 bounces and will not open. No error message pops up.My Firefox browser does work so it can't be a internet problem.
This is what comes up on Console when I try to open Safari.
Safari can't open library: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SyndicationUI.framework/Versions/A/Syndicatio nUI (No such file or directory, errno = 2)
    Does anyone know a solution?
    Thank you.

That's probably because Safari 3.1 introduced a webkit that your Panther applications can't use.
Go to HD/Library/Packages, and delete the package for Safari 3.
Then go to HD/Library/Receipts and delete any reference to Safari 3.
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
Now re-install your previous version of Safari from your install disk (the one that came with your Mac).
    Repair permissions and reboot.

  • Safari, Mail AND Firefox Hijack???

Hi, This is a mirrored post from the one in Safari forum, and the iBook G4 general use forum.
First point, let's get this out of the way: I know there are neither virus nor malware in the wild for macs.
Now, to the matter: Today, my Safari, Firefox and Mail app were hijacked several times, and were always redirected to this page: www.register.4less.com
Always that I typed an ordinary http address (let's say: www.elnorte.com) in the address bar, I ended up in a site that purportedly belonged to the address I typed (in the address bar said the address I typed), but on the body, there was an image with the logo of register.4less.com, and the text: "Welcome to the future hosting of "www.[whateverityped].com" It was the same on FF and Safari.
It all started when the Mail app warned me that a computer with a certificate issued to "register.4less.com" was pretending to be pop.gmail.com. I obviously cancelled the process, thinking the gmail server was compromised. I then experienced problems connecting with ANY app in my computer, even the RSS reader widget crashed (and when it crashed it couldn't connect to apple for sending the report).
I made several transactions trough an https server (my bank) without any problems, only somewhat slower than the average. After this, any other website which were not https would give me the message I've explained before. I know I shouldn't have logged in to my bank, but at that moment I didn't suspected anything.
Now, some more important information. I live in Mexico City, but right now I'm on vacation on my parent's house in my place of Birth: Monterrey, México. I have a cousin living also in Monterrey, which has refered to me he had encountered this problem with safari before and only in http sites. He told me also that https sites didn't have any problem (ebay and amazon sign in pages, e.g.). He uses the same ISP my parents use. In México city I have another ISP, and have never before had this problem. Right now my brothers are out of home, so I can not ask them if they have had this problem before, altough none of them uses a Mac.
Of course I always have my Mac's firewall on. I also don't have any sharing enabled (neither windows nor personal file sharing).
When I empty the cache this problem goes away for a few minutes before returning (that's how I'm writing this).
I have the pop-up blocker on, and while typing this I changed the cookies to "Only to sites you navigate to", and deleted all of the cookies already installed. This didn't prevented the problem from happening again.
Now guys, help me out here with these Questions:
    1. What should I do??
    2. What happened?? Could it be that the ISP have been compromised?, or is it my computer? I don't think it is my computer, I've searched the entire HD searching for anything remotely likely to register.4less.com and I didn't found anything. But right now I'm a little scared.

  • Safari - Mail Link Creates Disappearing Floating Window

When I click on a link in Mail to bring up Safari, the page with the link will open in Safari, but will not display.  If I scroll to the space where I have Safari, the window with the link will display in each space for about a second and then disappear.  When I get to the Safari space, I still can not get the window to appear.  Looking in the Window menu lists the link of the window and selecting it will still not make the window appear.  The three finger flick gesture to show all open windows in Safari will show the 'Floating' window, but again selecting the window from this view will not make the window appear.
I know its Halloween.... and floating things are supposed to be happening this time of year but I'm sure this will still be happening long after Halloween is gone.
    Anyone else have the problem?

  • All of my apple has programs will not open eg safari mail and stuff as well as system Prefs are in another language what should I do?

Hello I have recently installed a program called Mac keeper and it deleted some very important files, now I cannot open any of my apple programs like safari mail, photo booth, iChat, etc. If I reinstall leopard will it delete the accounts and files that are already on the
Computer? And I also found out that nobody on the computer thought of turning on time machine.

    Hi,
If you stick the Leopard Install Disk in the Computer and Launch the Installer you will get offered Options  and one of these is for Archive and Install with sub Option or Preserve Settings.
This will install the Software and the Apps but not touch any Home Folder of any User.
The Disk is likely to be at an earlier version of 10.5 and you will need to run Software Update (System Preferences) to get back to exactly where you were.

  • Safari, mail and app store won't open (mac book pro, lion)

    hello,
my brother can't open safari, mail or the mac app store on his mac book pro running ios lion.
until yesterday he had no problems but today it doesn't work.
when he tries to open one of these programms they jump around at the dashboard infinitely.
his internet connection works, he can use skype and the itunes store without a problem.
what can he do to fix this?

You might want to re-post this in the MacBook Pro Discussions. PowerBooks (there's no such thing as a PowerBook Pro!) can't run OSX 10.6 or 10.7.
However while we're here, without any personal knowledge of this issue, I would suggest that if you haven't done it already the first thing to try would be to
    repair permissions.

  • After updating my iPhone 5 to iOS 8.0.2 my safari, mail and calendar won't open. How do I rectify this issue?

I recently updated my iPhone 5 to the iOS8.0.2 version and since then I cannot access my safari, my mail and my calendar icon is blank.  Every time I touch the icon it just blinks, the phone screen goes white and then it reverts back to the main screen.  I have used 8.9 GB of storage and I have 3.8GB available.
I have powered my iPhone down a few times and restarted it and it doesn't make a difference.
    Please help.
    Thank you.

First, reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches after installing new software.
If this does not work, set it up as new device, explained in this article:
iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device
If this does not work after restoring from the backup, try again, this time without using the backup, to make sure that this is not software related.

  • Safari, Mail and iPhoto all quitting...

I had trouble with iPhoto quitting after a few seconds, but now Mail and Safari are doing the same, I wasn't sure where to post this query, thanks, any help welcome.

Does the issue occur in a new user account?
If you do not have one available, you can create one by going to System Preferences > Accounts, click on the lock to unlock it, click the "+" button to add a new account, then fill in the required information and click "Create Account".
Log out from your regular account and then into the new one. Are you able to open Safari here?
    Best of luck.
