Safari, Mail, and Software Update won't launch

I've tried downloading Safari 3 but my iMac needed to be 10.4+. As a result my Safari, Mail , and Software Update will not launch. When I click either one it will just do 1 or 2 bounces and will not open. No error message pops up.My Firefox browser does work so it can't be a internet problem.
This is what comes up on Console when I try to open Safari.
Safari can't open library: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SyndicationUI.framework/Versions/A/Syndicatio nUI (No such file or directory, errno = 2)
Does anyone know a solution?
Thank you.

That's probably because Safari 3.1 introduced a webkit that your Panther applications can't use.
Go to HD/Library/Packages, and delete the package for Safari 3.
Then go to HD/Library/Receipts and delete any reference to Safari 3.
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Now re-install your previous version of Safari from your install disk (the one that came with your Mac).
Repair permissions and reboot.

  • Mail, Safari and Software Update won't launch?

My Mail, Safari and Software Update apps don't launch after my last Software Update installed Quicktime 7.0.4 and iTunes 6.0.2. During that update (Jan 12, 06) I got the spinning ball and ended up restarting because nothing was happening...
That's when my apps stopped opening.
This is what Console says when I try:
dyld: /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail truncated or malformed library: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit (load command 0 fileoff plus filesize extends past end of the library)
dyld: /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari truncated or malformed library: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit (load command 0 fileoff plus filesize extends past end of the library)
dyld: /System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app/Contents/MacOS/Software Update truncated or malformed library: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit (load command 0 fileoff plus filesize extends past end of the library)
So it appears I have a "malformed library", what should I do?
    Thanks.
Powermac g4, 400 mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Sonnet processor (1 GHz) and 1.5 GB RAM

Yes, it looks like something is not right with /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit. The message "filesize extends past end of the library" sounds like there might be some corruption of the filesystem, although I certainly could be wrong about this. (The filesystem is the operating system's mechanism for determining where files actually start and stop on the harddrive.)
The first thing to try would be to attempt to repair the filesystem. This can be accomplished by booting of your Panther Install CD and using Disk Utility to do a Repair Disk. There are good instructions for that at Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption. See the section on Repair Disk.
If that does not work, I suggest that you try to replace /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit. If you have another computer with the same operating system, you could connect via target disk mode and copy over the good folder to replace the bad one. Alternatively, you could do an Archive and Install.

  • Ios 4 safari, mail and software update crash immediately

  • Safari and Software Update won't launch on Macbook

I have a macbook (OS X 10.4.11) that I haven't used in a while. I tried to use it today but Safari crashes as soon as I launch it. I can't even view a page--Safari and its menu appear momentarily on the top bar and then disappear. Software Update does the same thing. Skype didn't launch the first time I tried, but it did after doing some disk repair. I don't want to use the Mac CD to take it to factory settings because I don't want to lose the Microsoft Office I have on it. Is there a way to make these programs work?

When you boot up the Mac with the install disc in, hold the C key for around 10-20 seconds. THEN let go of the C key. I notice this when doing this on my Mac. I would hold down the C key for a minute, and give up cause I think it just froze, and let go of the button only to find out that it didn't really work cause I had to let go of the C key. It also takes a while to boot up too. I'm not sure about the next part, but I think it goes like this. It will show you a installation screen, and on the top bar, you click utilities and Disk Utility. I don't remember the whole process cause I haven't done it in a while.

  • Safari, Mail and Software Update crash upon open after  S/U 2006-004

After installing the latest Security Update, Mail, Safari, and Software all crash upon open. nother strange this is that when I do a FIND on Safari, it seems to be in the Root "/" directory. The only way that we can get onto the inter is by using IE. I have also tried to create another user to see if that helps, but Safari just shows up as a "?" in the dock. When I goto applications, and open it there, it still crashes under the new user. Itunes will successfully go to the Music Store.

I reloaded the Mac OS on the mac that was having the problem.

  • Safari and software update won't connect with 10.6.5 and 10.6.6

Downloaded 10.6.5 and 10.6.6 to my 4 month old Macbookpro but safari and software update wouldn't connect. Camino worked fine. I'm back on 10.6.3. It works fine but I would like to update. Suggestion?

In response to how did I update if safari and update didn't work with 10.5 and 10.6. Your question is silly. I updated from 10.6.4 and as I said Camino works fine and always has.

  • Safari, iTunes and Software update can't connect, firefox can

    Hi all!
Since upgrading to Leopard I've been unable to get my macbook to connect using Safari, Software Update or iTunes. I get unknown error messages from iTunes and Software Update and a message that the server can't be found or times out from safari.
Strangely Firefox works perfectly and the other Macs on my network (some 10.4, some 10.5) are fine.
I have tried checking the proxy settings and creating an new user account but both times the problem persists.
The only thing I can think it could be is that someone configured proxy settings through firefox a while ago (pre 10.5) when they used it at their office. could that affect safari etc?
    All help gratefully received.
    Adam

Hi. Sorry this will not help, more of an observation. I posted a while back that I was having much the same problem at work when connecting through a proxy. Any Apple app that needs an internet connection did not work, ie Safari, Widgets, Software Update etc. But iChat works, as does Mail although not the RSS function. Firefox on the other hand works fine. I am absolutely certain my setting are correct and when I revert to using my 10.4.10 boot disk that all works fine. I think Apple has some how changed the way user info and password is sent when making a net connection through a proxy and now with 10.5 it does not work.
I also spoke with a mate yesterday he has just upgraded to 10.4.11 which means he now has Safari 3. He now is also experiencing the same problems I have with 10.5 and proxy connections.

  • Safari, Mail and Disk Utility won't run unless Font Book is Open

Recently Safari, Mail and Disk Utility would crash and spin and the "Application Not Responding" line would appear when I checked the program in the dock. After following a variety of tips from other Apple users, I finally got the programs to run. However, I started them while Font Book was open and now they only work when it remains open. I've been using Apple/Mac products since the beginning of time and have never seen anything like this. I've repaired permissions, throught out preferences, etc., etc. and can't resolve this problem. Please, someone, help me.

    Hello buhrow:
That makes two of us that go back to the beginning of time and have never seen anything like that. Have you run the fontbook applications to eliminate duplicates and check for corrupt fonts? Offhand, I cannot understand why just having a program open would prevent other programs from crashing.
If nothing else works, you might want to consider an archive and install (after backing up, of course):

Fixed it myself. Under network settings "Auto Proxy Discovery" was enabled. When I turned this off everything started working again. Not sure how this was enabled in the first place.

  • Updated from 10.4.2 to .3 and Mail and Software Update Stopped Working...?

When I click on software update it says
    Preferences Error
    Could not Load software update
Mail opens but no windows or panes open and you can't quit or anything, I always have to force quit.
I tried a manual update of 10.4.3 to see if that would work but when I tried to open the .pkg it wouldn't.
I also need to get Classic working.

    Help please.
.pkgs still won't run. I double click and nothing.
I've repaired preferences, started from the Tiger CD and verified/repaired my hard drive through Disk Utility as well as Disk Warrior.
Software Update is still dead, as well as Mail.

  • System Preferences & Software Update won't launch from Apple Menu

I could really use some help with this, I've tried google searches etc and nothing has worked out.
I recently upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8 and then changed back to 10.4.11
When it was installed (from a Universal retail not the DVD that came with the mac) I copied all the folders from "Previous System" and replaced the newly made ones.
At some point I was using System Preferences when it vanished with the usual message "Closed unexpectedly, reopen, close etc". Since then neither System Preferences nor Software Update will launch from the apple menu. System Preferences will, however, open from the dock.
When they are clicked on the hard drive makes some noise and then stops and nothing appears.
Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  • Safari, mail and app store won't open (mac book pro, lion)

    hello,
my brother can't open safari, mail or the mac app store on his mac book pro running ios lion.
until yesterday he had no problems but today it doesn't work.
when he tries to open one of these programms they jump around at the dashboard infinitely.
his internet connection works, he can use skype and the itunes store without a problem.
what can he do to fix this?

You might want to re-post this in the MacBook Pro Discussions. PowerBooks (there's no such thing as a PowerBook Pro!) can't run OSX 10.6 or 10.7.
However while we're here, without any personal knowledge of this issue, I would suggest that if you haven't done it already the first thing to try would be to
    repair permissions.

  • Some Of My Apps Like AppStore and Software Update won't open on my MacBook Pro

some of my major softwares like AppStore and SoftwareUpdate and ,,,, are not working!!!
    please help
(I'm using Mavericks and Cant upgrade it!)

    A.
You ran a defective third-party "utility" such as "CleanMyMac" or "MacCleanse" that purports to "clean up" "junk" files. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system and many applications.
The first thing you need to do is remove that software according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below. If you use any iWork applications, you may need to delete them and redownload them from the App Store.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.
    B.
"Kerio Control" must be updated, reinstalled, or removed.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • Mail, Safari, Software Update fail to launch after last update.

After my last software update which included an update for Quicktime, iTunes and two other programs I ran Age Of Empires and left it running for a period of time.
The computer froze hard and I had to hold the power button in to restart it.
From that point I cannot get Safari, Mail, or Software Update to start. They launch, but about a second into the process they quit unexpectidly and will not re-open.
When I try to run Safari or Mail through the terminal it comes up with the following:
Last login: Sat Jul 14 13:51:39 on ttyp1
    /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari; exit
    Welcome to Darwin!
    wilbur-purdues-imac-g5:~ wilbur$ /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari; exit
    Segmentation fault
    logout
    [Process completed]
I cannot figure this out and don't know what the steps are that I should go through to fix this one.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Miriam,
I read the selection in MacFixit and went through the steps that they suggested.
I even downloaded MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.10PPC.dmg and when I went to re-install it the program Installer quit unexpectedly in the same manner that Safari, Mail, and Software Update did.
I also noted that when I tried to start either Safari or Mail using the terminal (I don't have much expertise in this area) they stated that there was a segmentation fault
Here is what was on the terminal screen:
Last login: Tue Jul 17 12:28:25 on ttyp1
    /Applications/Utilities/Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Installer; exit
    Welcome to Darwin!
    wilbur-purdues-imac-g5:~ wilbur$ /Applications/Utilities/Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Installer; exit
    Segmentation fault
    logout
    [Process completed]
It seems that I can install other programs using Installer, but I cannot do the upgrade. Maybe I have the wrong file.
Thanks for the support so far.
