Safari makes hard drive noisy

Is this normal? Every time I launch Safari my hard drive starts to be noisy. It's this usual hard drive clicking but it's really fast and noisy clicking. What's worse that it takes few minutes. It's really annoying in quiet room. It looks like hard drive try to read some data for using Safari. I cleaned everything I can using MainMenu app - cache, history, temporary files. Nothing happened. I use MBP 2,2GHz, 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD - late 2007.
Have you got the same problem or know reason and solution?
Really thank you

Hi, sorry for late response. Yes, it still does the weird ticking noises. I tried to reinstall operating system and not just Safari and it still does that. I was talking to my colleagues (they're hard drive specialists) and first time they told me that my HDD is going to crash any day soon. Then I told them that the HDD is doing it for several months. They were confused. They told me cause of this noises is that HDD is writing and reading from multiple sectors of the disk.
So, my HDD still does it and I got used to it. What about yours HDD?

  • Hard drive noisy when using Safari

I've read posts about this before.  Sometimes it was blamed on the computer, or the hard drive, but I have experience with this over many years and with different computers, going back to my lime clamshell iMac (which still runs).
I'm currently using a 24" Intel iMac from 2008 and a MacBook Pro from 2012.  And occasionally just for the fun of it I'll fire up the ol' clamshell.
They all do the same thing when running Safari.  At first the noise is minimal, then suddenly is sounds like it's processing lots of data.  And it's non-stop.  The only way to stop it is to quit Safari.
It's not just that it's noisy, but it sounds like it's producing unnecesary wear and tear on the hard drive, lessening its life.
Has anyone ever come up with a solution to this, or should I just switch over to Firefox (which I'm using to post this)?

Thanks for replying, have only just been able to get back on net! I will use the activity viewer although I haven't used it before, so am not sure how to, or to 'post a URL to a page that gives your trouble' but will have a go. What I didn't mention in my post was that my machine had been running very well with QSX/Mail/Safari since I installed it maybe 6 months ago and have had no problems viewing any web sites before. Also I don't think that the sound is the fan if thats what your suggesting, It's more like running your finger over a hair comb every few seconds.

  • T520 500GB 7200RPM Hard Drive Noisy?

My employer gave me a T520 and the keyboard is the best I have ever used. I also own a Thinkpad Edge and like the Accutype keyboard, but I think T520 keyboard is far better.
I noticed that the T520 in the configuration I want is under $1000 now and am thinking about buying one before it is too late.
I'm thinking about getting the 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive. I am going to assume it is made by Seagate. Is it noisy? My Thinkpad Edge had a Seagate 250 GB 5400 RPM hard drive that continuously made a shuffling noise, even when not actively being used. It was not the usual clicking noise, but lower in frequency. I'm thinking the head was being parked every time data transfer stopped just in case the drive got dropped. Or perhaps to conserve power. But that's just a guess. Whatever it was it was very irritating. I replaced it with a small SSD and everything is fine now. I also have a Seagate 500 GB 5400 RPM hard drive that I removed from an external USB drive and put into an HP laptop. It did not make the shuffling noise when it was in the external case but makes the same noise now that it is in the laptop. I'm guessing it is a Seagate thing. I used a utility called QuietHDD to adjust the acoustic parameters on both drives, and it worked, but I wonder what that does to performance and reliability. I am reluctant to use QuietHDD on a new laptop.
How noisy is the 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive in the T520? (My employer's T520 has an SSD). Also is the 5400 RPM version less noisy? And is one more reliable? The difference in price is about $30.

the 500 gigs 7200 rpm hdd noise level is lower then the previous generations used.
The noise of the notebook hdd nowadays are mostly from the reader/writer reader moving around and not so much the spinning platter.

  • MacBook hard drive noisy in Windows XP

Hello, I just installed Windows XP on my new MacBook. I only did this so I could run borlandc for school. Whenever I'm working on it in XP, the hard drive starts to get noisy like when I'm working with videos or doing heavy duty stuff in Mac OS X. The only things open right now are IE and borlandc++.
    What's the problem?

Are you sure it's the hard drive and not the fan?

  • Safari hammers hard drive

I have started to use Safari more in Leopard than I ever did before. I started to realize that every time I visit a page or go back to a previous page the hard drive on my iBook is accessed for several seconds.
Performing the same operation with Firefox does not result in this same drive access.
I tried to find some type of option in Safari about cache size or location but couldn't find anything. A search didn't turn up any posts here on this subject either.
Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions for a solution?

    Hi Duane,
The cache folders are located here in Tiger:
    /Users/YourUsername/Library/Caches/Safari/
I hope they're in the same location on Leopard and if they are try trashing them.
Maybe they're some corruption in the cached data that is causing Safari to reload the cache files over and over.
How's your memory looking at the moment as well? Is there some free or has the system started paging a bit more as well?
Edit: This [article|http://mactechnotes.blogspot.com/2005/10/controlling-webkit-and-safari -through.html] also lists some 'defaults' settings in WebKit that you could try tweaking. The article is a couple of years old though, so I'm not sure if all those preferences still exist in the version shipped with Leopard.

  • Safari Churning Hard Drive

Safari is periodically churning my hard drive every couple of seconds. It causes a pause with the spinning beach ball in most apps. I've switched to Firefox for now because I couldn't track down the cause. Has anyone else come up against this issue? I've seen a few postings on the Web, but no answers that applied.

I tried it, but same problem. It's not really churning. There's still periodic disk access that slows everything down. No problem with Firefox.

  • Moving the Macbook Pro with a sudden movement makes hard drive screech.

Whenever I move my Macbook Pro from my lap to somewhere else I hear the hard drive make like a little teeny tire screech noise. I noticed this the time I was in my room in total silence when I put the Macbook down on the bed.
Its just a concern I have that I might wear out the hard drive faster this way since most of the time I'm moving the computer from place to place. Anyone else have the same concern?

The screech you hear is the drive quickly moving its read-write heads off the platters and onto a small ramp to prevent shock damage to the heads and platters.
The sudden motion sensor (SMS) does this in anticipation of a possible drop. This does not mean there is an actual danger of damage to the drive when this happens.
Nevertheless, I would avoid it if possible. It's an emergency head retract operation that can damage some drives over time. This may not be the case with the drives Apple is using, but we don't know for sure.
The SMS can be disabled as described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1934
But this will increase the chance of data loss in the event of a real drop.

  • Safari crunching hard drive

    Hello,
I'm using Safari 4. When I open Safari for the first time on turning my Mac on, it runs for a very short while fine, then the hard drive starts crunching for a couple of minutes. Then it stops crunching and all is well again.
This doesn't happen when I turn my Mac on and open another browser -- just Safari.
Does anyone know what Safari's doing when it starts crunching and how I can stop it?
    Thanks,
    Jonathan.

Thanks -- I've just disabled it to see if that stops the crunching. I'll let you know if it's successful.
What sort of websites does the feature warn against? I don't recall having ever seen a warning saying that a site I'm visiting or trying to visit is fraudulent. I tend to buy from a limited range of websites (train companies, amazon and a few shops I use).
If I don't particularly go beyond these sites, and turning the feature off prevents Safari from crunching, could I keep the feature off? Basically, what I'm trying to ask is: is it just about common sense over which websites you put payment details into, or does it do something more complicated?
    Thanks,
    Jonathan.

  • Backing up iMovie files to make hard drive space available

has anyone developed a good process for backing up iMovie event video on an external drive, but still working on those events in iMovie?  Or do you have to copy the event back to the hard drive to work in the event?

  • How do I make space on my MBP and transfer old files to External Hard Drive?

I recently ran out of the 250 GB space on my 2010 Macbook Pro, so I bought a non-apple external hard drive. I plugged it in and Time Machine automatically popped up.
I just wanted to know what the correct way to transfer all my old files that I'm not using any more and still want to keep to the external hard drive and not use the external hard drive as a "backup" for my laptop but rather as just a place to keep all the files I'm not currently using. Do I just use Time Machine and turn off the automatic back ups? Is there a certain way to transfer individual files to the EHD later (does this happen through Time Machine or just dragging them in through Finder?)?
I've never used an EHD so I'm really unsure on how all this works on a Mac since the instruction manual only gave instructions for PC's even though it is Mac compatible.
    Thanks in advance!

Apple doesnt make hard drives, they use Toshiba/Hitachi inside current macbook pro non-retina.
You should always have a backup regardless, and 2 at that. One backup, and one archive, unless losing valuable data is no consideration to you.
use time machine as a backup for restoration /emergency backup and use a separate HD for archiving valuable data.
Using an external HD is as easy and falling down. Buy a nice Hitachi/Toshiba or Seagate external HD, format it in disk utility for MAC OSX extended journaled and drag and drop ALL your valuable data to same and updata as needed.
a nice 1TB external HD is currently running $65
    backup with time machine,
ARCHIVE all valuable data, ,music, pics, files, videos etc etc onto ANOTHER hard drive.
2 backups is 1, and 1 is none.
If you always follow that rule that should be written in stone, you'll never be sorry.... (and I know countless 1000s that have been)

  • Do all Macbook Pro hard drives have the apple sign on them?

    Hi there,
November 2012 I bought a new Macbook Pro because my old one had beer spilled on it. I decided since I was getting a new computer I might as well as upgrade my hard drive. I bought a Seagate Momentous SSHD 750 GB. It is a hybird drive between SSD and HDD. I got my computer running on it with little effort and things were going well. 2 days ago My computer froze, which does not happen often. I held down the power button until the Macbok turned off. When I turned it back on it took me to recovery mode where I can pick between disc utility and reinstall the Operating System. I went into disc utility to verify and repair my hard drive. There were no issues. I decided re just restart my computer and move on.
When I restarted a second time it took me back to recovery mode with out me doing the *command R* prompt. I checked my disc again and this time it said that I needed to reformat my hard drive. I tried to back up all my data however every tool I used was unable to saying the HD was not accessible. I erased the hard drive and tried to do a clean reinstall of the OS. I was unable to do so. The computer just keep going into an infinite loop when downloading the OS. It would get down to 8 minutes remaining and then jump magically back to 1 hour 45 minutes. After about 8 hours of letting it do that I canceled the process.
I took the computer to a Mac Store and the guy there told me that because the hard drive was "third party" and not from apple, that Intel Macs running 1.8 had trouble talking to the firmware of those hard drives. I found this to be confusing because the hard drive worked well for 4 months with no issues. Also, I am not sure what he meant by third party seeing as apple does not make hard drives. He explained to me that "typically" the only hard drives I can use are the ones that have the apple sign on the label. They said that they could not honor my warranty because I didn't have the original hard drive with me. Once I get the original hard drive then they would fix it.
My question however now is if it is really true that only apple labeled hard drives are the only ones that will work with my Mac Book Pro. The apple store wanted 220 euros for a new 500 GB hard drive plus another 80 euros for labor. I am fully capable of installing a hard drive and I am a cheap student. I don't want to pay that kind of cash. I have looked online and there are several retailers who claim to be selling Mac Book Pro hard drives however the images do not contain an apple label. I am not sure if I am understanding the label thing correctly, the Apple guy were speaking German and English is my first language.
I appreciate any help and advice!

I have performed verify and repair on the hard drive from the disc utility and everything checks out on the hard drive. I am not getting any error messages. I am unable to load my operating system back on it however. Last night I finally was able to get past the download portion of the OS install and it restarted and brought me to a screen that shows it installing the OS. It never loads on the progress bar however. To me it seems as thought the hard drive is having trouble writing any data to itself. What do you think? I am not getting any clicks from the hard drive like it is struggling,  I am not seeing any physical damage to the hard drive and disc utility says it checks out.  Thank you for your help!

  • My Lacie hard drive back up is not showing up and light is  flickering

My back up hard drive is not showing up when i plug in the USB to my Macbook Air so won't back up. The light on the hard drive is flickering. CAn you please help?

A: does it show up in disk utility?
B: try a different USB port.
C: If no go, try a different Mac.
D: If still not recognized then its about 90% likely the SATA bridge card inside the USB enclosure is bad....NOT the Hard Drive itself, but the SATA bridge card attached to same.
Is your Lacie  a conventional HD or a SSD?      (LaCie does NOT make hard drives, internal conventional HD are Seagate inside a LaCie)
    If its a conventional HD
A replacement HD enclosure will solve same, ($15 ebay).   The Sata card removes from the HD very easily, like LEGOs attached together come apart.
Verify A thru D first before doing anything.
likely bad part pictured below, the SATA card,  ... as seen INSIDE a USB external HD

  • My LaCie external hard drive connected to Time Machine for data backup drops it's connection and a error message displays tell me that I did not properly disconnect the device.  This started after upgrading to OSX10.6.7.

My La Cie external hard drive drops it's connection after mounting on my iMac computer.  This problem seems to have started after upgrading to OSX10.6.7.  When I turn on my computer and than turn on the external hard drive the hard drive mounts to my disk top without any problem, but when I bring up Mail or Safari the hard drive drops its connection.  Is there a fix for this problem?  Hope someone can help.

The connection to 10.6.7 may just be a coincidence.  I had a similar problem with a disk and was about to throw it out but decided to try a different USB cable.  That fixed the problem and the drive is still in use.
Try a new cable if you have not already done so.

  • Hp Warranty Woes & Hard Drive Heartache

HP – Warranties Woes & Hard Drive Headaches.
    Dear Internet Community (I.C)
    I need your help.
I would like to know if I’m being unreasonable in my expectations or is Hewlett Packard (HP) not living up to its both moral & legal obligations as a good corporate citizen & what it alleges to be – a Customer Focused Global Computer Services company.
Apologies if this is a little long winded but in the interests of fairness I need to put as many HP comments in as possible – to give you a clear picture.
So bear with me, you will not be disappointed & there are a couple of questions you might like to answer & feedback to the appropriate parties.
Keep in mind at all times we are talking about approximately a $200 (NZD) fix – less than the lost profit on one lost sale for an HP PC ( you might think twice about HP products after reading this).
There are two parts to this problem :
    Part 1 :
I purchased an HP Touch Smart a few years ago, I registered the product & warranty with them & over the years have received have received numerous emails stating “buy this, upgrade now”.
But I don’t recall ever receiving an “WARNING – Critical Failure Issue (CFI) apply attached patch immediately” email while under warranty. Why is this relevant?
Ø Seagate makes Hard Drives – in this case a Barracuda 7200.11
Ø HP buys said HD’s from Seagate
Ø Seagate finds a problem with firmware in HD’s & advises HP & supplies a fix
Ø HP knows which Customers have these HD’s, because you know what goes into your machines – right ? - see below
Ø HP FAILS to send email to Customers with the fix (a simple email with attachment would solve problem) or issue recall.
Ø HP even offers previously to fix problem FOC & puts fix on its Website - but only if the Customer knows somehow of the problem.
Ø Should the Customer intuitively& telepathically know of problems in HP Products in advance before it fails, because of course HP is not telling their Customers.
Problem or Outcome: My HD has bricked itself & will not operate as I never received notice of the firmware fix at any time either in or out of warranty.
Paul Boshoff - G M -Personal Systems Group- HP NZ (PB- GMPSG) says
“It would be very difficult, if not impossible, for any computer vendor to proactively notify it’s customers of component-level updates”
“Failures of the kind you’ve experienced are usually related to a specific batch of serial numbers and often those component serial numbers aren’t available when the user is registering that particular computer.”
Now let me know if you think I’m wrong, but it sounds like HP does not know what goes into its machines or at the very minimum does not keep track of this.
HP, a Global Computer Services company cannot possibly be expected to track what goes into its machines. HP apparently does not record or match the serial number of the HD with the machine it goes into.
If Ford & Toyota can track & record what tyres go on which make & model of their cars which are in the millions each year & can recall cars dating back 8-10 years just case of a manufacturers component malfunction why can’t HP link & record the HD details.
I can just hear it now “I’m sorry we don’t know which engine we put in your car”.
And let’s be real clear here – we are not talking about some small screw at the back of a PC – Along with the CPU & the RAM, the Hard Drive is pretty much up there in the top 3 of important components of any computer.
    I.C – Do you feel
ü That fills you with confidence in HP products & services ?
ü Should HP be required to tell its customer of CFI’s with its products – particularly while under warranty?
ü Has HP tried to limit their liability & cost by directly NOT telling Customers of CFI’s while under warranty?
    Part 2 :
When your HD bricks itself – apparently all is not lost – some very clever person has found a solution so you can get the HD going long enough to apply the firmware fix & then your HD is a good as new – Here is the link that spells it out with pics http://www.overclock.net/t/457286/seagate-bricked-firmware-drive-fix-with-pics)
You’ll see the relevance of this shortly.
After much messing about I received the following email from PB- GMPSG : “I have escalated your issue and have just received the go-ahead to repair your unit at our cost. We will be utilizing our own, authorized service provider to re-install the original hard-drive and to run the software fix on that unit.” (This guy most likely earns a six figure salary & isn’t able to sign off $200 fix).
NOTE : it does not limit or restrict what type of fixes will be used & also at this time HP was aware of both the Seagate fix & above fix.
I delivered the PC & bricked HD into the HP Authorised Repair Centre (ARC) as requested –their ticket instructions read “do firmware update…HP to incur costs. NO COST to customer”.
Obviously it’s not rocket science but you need the HD going before you can apply any firmware fix including this one – HP knew that to get the HD going they would need a special fix to enable them to apply the Seagate fix.
After all this is not an isolated case & I did point out to HP that they would need the fix I supplied (or something similar HP approved or designed if that made them more comfortable) prior to their offer of fixing the HD.
HP said their ARC’s had all the right software for fixing their machines. In addition I have been told on several occasions, the ARC’s are the bee’s knees, the cat pajamas, the whiz kids of the PC service world “The first port of call for the repair centre agent is to download all the latest service advisory notices and updates. This is a very fundamental part of the repair process and one that we spend a great deal of time emphasizing with our authorised repair centres” Keep this in mind.
A week later I received a call from Peter Gasporaratos, HP CS Melbourne (poor guy – caught in the middle) & stated “there is nothing else we can do for you”. When I asked if they had applied the fix he said “its not our responsibility.. its not part of our guidelines.. the ARC does not practice unauthorised methods..& this ARC will not go down this path”
Ironically the day before, Barry from the ARC said “we can attempt it, but we will charge you too”. So HP’s own ARC will do it, but there will be a cost – but hang on a minute, didn’t PB- GMPSG say “to repair your unit at our cost. We will be utilizing our own, authorized service provider to re-install the original hard-drive and to run the software fix on that unit” & HP CS put on the instructions “HP to incur costs. NO COST to customer”.
    I.C – Do you feel
ü HP have said they will fix it at NO COST to me, regardless of what the fix entails ?
ü Should HP honour this commitment ?
ü Would you do business with a company that says one thing & does another & does not honour its commitment ?
ü That given the bricking fault did not need to happen if HP had been proactive in letting their customers know of the firmware issue & this is not an isolated case– shouldn’t they then be responsible in finding or developing a fix for getting the HD going long enough to apply the firmware fix if they are not going to use other recognised fixes.
    Abstract
So that’s it – what do you think I.C. ?
Would you want HP computers & servers controlling the Traffic Lights, Air Traffic Control, Patient records & Medications at Hospitals knowing that HP will not tell these organisations that there is CFI with their products & they could suddenly lose everything. All dead while they try to find a back up computer with all the data – god forbid if President Obama’s “football” is powered by an HP – Nuclear War before we know it.
But seriously – I would love your feedback – Am I being unreasonable in asking them to honour their commitment for a $200 fix ?
And of course HP being a Customer Focused Global Computer Services company, would welcome your feedback.
Here are a couple of the players contact details who would love to hear from you :
ü Keith Watson – CEO –HP NZ -I initially contacted him & he thanked me for bringing it to his attention, then nothing.
    Email : [email protected]
ü Paul Boshoff - G M -Personal Systems Group- HP NZ – well of course you now know who he is now – he would love feedback.
    Email : [email protected]
ü Jessica Rangi – She’s the Spokes person/PR/Marketing for HP NZ & has just help launch HP new PC range in NZ – She would love your feedback as it might impact on her marketing & she is quoted as having helped out in warranty situations before & has worked at HP head office.
    Email : [email protected]
ü Meg Whitman - President and Chief Executive Officer of HP Global
    Email : [email protected]
They would all like to hear from you J
    I.C
J Thanks for being patience & reading through to the end – now it’s up to you
L buy HP Products & Services or not.
L Do HP deserve your hard earned money if you now believe they aren’t going tell you about problems with their Product & Services.
Be kind to one another & take care.
    Regards
    Smithie
P.S - I sent this blog to HP for fact & quote checking prior to uploading (I gave them over a week to reply) – the silence was deafening from HP.

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and product number of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue.
The above requested information can be found on the bottom of your computer or inside the battery compartment. Please do not include your serial number. Please enter the model/product information into HP's Online Consumer Support page and post it here for our review.
I doubt the hard drive would be covered by buying an extended warranty after the fact. There is also no reason to buy a new hard drive from HP. Almost any 2.5" hard drive on the market will work in your computer. You will need your personal HP Recovery Disc set to return the computer to a factory like state. If you didn't create these discs, you will need to order a set.
