Safari makes my macbook freeze all of a sudden ?

A few days ago I started experiencing problems with my Macbook. It was working fine until I shut it off. I turned it back on again and it would not go past the blue screen that appears right before everything starts up, even though there was a cursor on the screen. I tried holding the power button down and restarting it, but the same thing kept happening. I had to go to school right away, so I tried unplugging the adapter and letting the battery drain out with the computer open and on. However when I got home several hours later, the blue screen was still there and it didn't seem like I had removed the adapter at all. The next thing I tried doing was reinstalling Mac OS-X operating system onto the computer and updating some software. This seemed to work fine, until the next day when I was watching a video on the internet. My computer all of a sudden froze up to the point where Finder was frozen and I couldn't force quit anything anymore, so I had to hold the power button and restart it manually. This time, however, it would not leave the gray screen. I tried resetting the PRAM, but that didn't work either. I tried performing a hard disk test, but the results came back saying that everything was okay. I tried repairing/re-verifying permissions and the hard disk, and there were only a few permissions that had to be verified. I tried restarting it again, and it still would not leave the gray screen. After this, I reinstalled the OS-X software and it seemed to work just fine. After I installed the operating system, I deleted my web browser that I was using at the time (Google Chrome) and other applications that I purchased on the App Store. I updated the software again, and that took about three hours to complete. After I had updated everything my computer turned on and restarted itself just fine. However, after everything started up, I tried loading up Safari and my computer froze up for at least 10 minutes. After the 10 minute delay everything seemed to work. However, whenever I would put my cursor over the dock, it would lag. I think that Safari is the root cause of the current problem because every other program that I opened didn't affect my computer in this way. Is it possible that my Safari application has a bug? Is it possible for me to reinstall the application onto my Macbook from the applications DVD included with the computer? Help !!!!

Hi,
Try going to your Applications folder and starting it from there, if it starts then go to the Safari menu and you will find reset Safari there.
You could try going to ~/Library/Safari and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Move to either the trash or the desktop and relaunch safari to see if anything happens.
If nothing then I would suggest the following.
1) Save > Backup your bookmarks
go to "~/Library/Safari/" (~ meaning home directory, user)
there is a file called Bookmarks.plist
those are your bookmarks, so you can back those up, but if you only drag the Safari.app package to the trash and EMPTY it you won't loose them or use Time Machine.
2) Delete and Download the latest Safari from Apple downloads here Apple - Downloads
3) Once you have reinstalled safari you want all your bookmarks back so Go to File > Import Bookmarks. That should allow you to import your old bookmarks. If that doesn't work for some reason, take that file and copy it over the new Bookmarks.plist. Also you could go back in time and reinstall your bookmarks from there.
As a foot note, I have FireFox loaded just in case anything happens to Safari as a backup browser.

  • Help! My MacBook is all of a sudden not working. I can login to my account but as soon as I do that the screen goes completely white. I can change the volume and I have a mouse but that is it. I've tried safe starting my computer and that doesn't work.

Help! My MacBook is all of a sudden not working past the login page. A white screen comes up that I cannot get rid of. I attempted a safe start up and that failed as well. It's a white screen where I have a mouse and when I click the volume buttons I can hear it working but nothing else just white. Please help.

Something you can try is resetting it all Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings. Or go to Settings > Store & sign out & log back in. Another thing you can do is restore your ipod. This has happened to me but the only thing i did was that i created a new account but try doing the things above i just told you. :)

Thank you for your reply.  I know I can use a card reader however I don't see why I should when importing directly from my camera has worked reliably for years.  The process I use is simply connecting the digital output from my camera to the USB port on the iMac, which has previously automatically opened iPhoto ready for the import.  Now all of a sudden my iMac does not recognise the camera.  However if I connect in the same way to my MacBook then iPhoto opens automatically on the MacBook, recognises the camera and is ready for importing.  So whilst I know I can use a reader, or my MacBook I want to use my iMac in the same way that I have for years.  I can only assume that the settings on the iMac may have changed, but I cannot verify this.

  • Safari 3.1.2 Freezes all the time!!!

Up until a few days ago safari has been working fine but now all of a sudden every time I go to a website with media, (Like imeem.com or meemix.com even bbc.com if there's a video and lordandtaylor.com when I click on an item to get more info) on it it freezes up and I have to force quit it. I don't know what's wrong with it but its really obnoxious to have to keep restarting safari every time this happens.

    Welcome to the forums Wellslogan!
You have posted in an old thread started by somebody else about a different problem with a different version of Safari - presumably, as you do not state what Mac you have, or what operating system, or what version of Safari is giving you trouble.
Please complete those details in 'My Settings' and then start your own thread so we can try and fix it for you!

  • Macbook Pro all of a sudden very slow.

My Macbook Pro has all of a sudden become very slow. The rainbow wheel shows up about every minute, and battery life has reduced a lot. I lost about 10% of my battery life within 10 minutes. It freezes all of the time. I recently upgraded to mountain lion about a month ago and everything has been fine since about 2 days ago. Any ideas on what it could be?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • My MacBook's Safari is running REALLY slow all of a sudden

I bought my MacBook at the start of this year and it's been all I could have hoped for a more.
In the past day or so, it has been taking a really long time for web pages to load, and especially for clips to download on YouTube (which has not been the case in the past at all). I use broadband internet, but it hasn't passed its download limit.
When i googled this question I saw a post that said someone might have a rootkit (??) installed on their computer, is that at all relevant? Sorry for the hazy questions but I'm not super computer literate and I'm a new mac user.
    Thanks!

*Hi Johanna, Welcome* to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
I won't be too much help but if you can still make the thread a question it will attract more attention.
    In the mean time:

  • Safari 3.0.4 freezing all other apps in 10.4.11?

Has anyone experienced a freezing of all other apps when using Safari? Here is what happens: I can use Safari and move freely to different web pages, but when I try to open another application, the icon for the other app appears in the dock bouncing for a long while, but then the icon stops bouncing and just appears in the dock as if I added it to the dock (i.e, it doesn't have a black triangle underneath the icon and the app doesn't open). This happens to all apps- printer utility, disk utility, word, activity log, etc., except dashboard widgets, which works. I can't even open system preferences or the force quit dialog box with the mouse. I can, however, right click on the icon in the dock and force quit from there. The right click opens up a menu which suggests the app is frozen in the middle of trying to open. Force quitting from the app, however, doesn't fix anything. I try to re-open the app, but I still cannot use any apps and cannot print from Safari.
The only thing that fixes this situation is to hold the power button down to shut down the computer. I wait 30 seconds and restart. I then run disk utility, but the results says no permission repairs are needed and disk repair comes back with a clean report. What's happening? I've had this problem happen more than once--maybe 3-4 times, but it doesn't happen all the time. I'm using 10.4.11 and Safari 3.0.4. Thanks for your help!

SafariPlus v.1.6a1 works perfectly with Safari 3.0.4.
I allow Flash and Gifs and don't have a problem.
But it could be some other third party 'enhancer' that caused the problem.
Input Managers can be tricky beasts. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4 which is not a beta. If Safari 3.0.4 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on.

  • FireFox and Safari make my MacBook take off

I remember from when I started using my MacBook that in rest, all the processes where about 0-1, maybe 2 percent. But recently I noticed that FireFox is always at about 20 percent and WindowService is about 10 percent. And when I open certain movies or large flash objects in FireFox or Safari they go crazy and spike to 140 percent, stressing my CPU (temperature) and thus making my fans create a liftoff every time I see a video.
Anyone have an idea what the problem could be? I cant pinpoint the action after which this occured, it just struck me recently that FireFox was taking off every time I opened a video.

I'm actually having the same problem jaap914. Whenever I open safari and watch a youtube video or even now (as I'm typing this) I have several tabs open, and the fans are going crazy.
My istat widget reads as follows:
    CPUA: 140 degrees
    GPU: 124 degrees
    Heatsink A & B: 128 & 113 degrees respectively
    Both fans running at 6000+
    CPU is idle b/w 89 - 96%
    According to Activity Monitor:
    Safari (keeps jumping b/w) CPU: 8-11 & RSIZE: 1.35GB
After that everything seems normal with Kernel task coming in at #2 with CPU: 3.4 & RSIZE: 223 MB
    Can anyone help?

  • Macbook Freezes all the time

To start things off, I would have to say that as of right now I am starting to hate apple 100%. When I first bought my Macbook, it came with a messed up hard drive that had to be replaced. In addition to this, the who keyboard was replaced twice, both because of the discoloration issue. But all that was almost two years ago. My macbook sits on a desk 24/7 with out being moved around at all, unless I go on vacation or something. But recently, about two days ago, my macbook froze for the first time in about 4 months. But what is strange about it is that it froze multiple times that first day, and has continued to do so since. On average, it has froze about 3 times a day for three days now. I am thinking about going down to the Genius bar and having them take a look at it, but I already ran Disk Utility and it says everything is fine, and the problems on my macbook can never be replayed when I am at the Apple Sore for some reason. Any ideas?

Sounds similar to what I had to endure. Screen started flickering right after I bought it, but since I didn't call Apple Care within two weeks after the delivery they would not take it back, but let me bring it to a certified repair center. By then, I also had the discoloration issue.
A few months later, the screen started flickering again, plus the battery was toast. The technician also determined that the case was discolouring again. That was all within the first year, so I got the Protection Plan.
A month ago, the hard disk died. Also, the screen was flickering again slightly (which I ignored for some time). Apple Care was quite unhelpful at first, but the guys at the repair center managed to get them to replace my original MacBook with a brand new one. I just hope that this one will last longer...
This is just to let you know that you are not alone and that generally, Apple seems to handle these cases quite generously.
On another note, I just read an article on notebook repairs in a German computer magazine. According to them, Apple has one of the highest failure rates of the brands compared. Quite sad if you ask me...
    Cheers,
    daniel
PS: just to add one more thing about your freezing issue. It could be a defective RAM module. Try running the Hardware Test. That will tell you whether there are any problems that would not be recognized by Apples Disk Utility.

  • My Computer has been freezing all of a sudden in the last week and i have to keep doing force shut downs!!!

My dad usually helps me fix this stuff, well go figure he is on vacation and a day after he leaves, the computer starts giving me problems. im so angry with it right now i might throw it off my balcony...
The loading icon randomly starts spinning sometimes and wont stop, requiring me to do force shut downs in order to make the computer usable again.  sometimes it does it right away, sometimes it does it after ive been using the computer for a bit... for a while i can switch windows until it completely freezes.  i cant click anything, cant force quit any programs or anything, and i the spinning beachball never goes away!  the computer isn't hot either when it crashes! SO FRUSTRATING! it was perfectly fine until the last week or so. im anything but a computer genious, but i ran the disc utility and it says the drives are fine.  things ive done in the last week.  done the updates that the app store was pestering me with, updated corel painter 12 with the most current patches because that started randomly crashing. well now painter works and its the computer crashing X.x
I dont have extensions on my safari aside from adblock. and i only have 2 apps downloaded and corel painter is the only software on the mac side of the computer.  parallels has an adobe suite on it but Corel is the only thing that has gone through changes recently...
i dont know what to do... i need to work on projects and the computer keeps making me lose progress and keeps giving me frustration. please help if you can...
I've never used the forums before so i don't know the right category, but if its wrong im sorry.  if you can just move it into the right one...

Back up all data immediately, if you haven't already done it.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • What is wrong with Safari?!  Spam central all of a sudden.

Been using Safari for years and years now.  It's been wonderful.  Since I've updated to 6.0.1 (running 10.8.2), I can be browsing my usual favorite sites (Mac Rumors, News Sites, Professional Sport team sites), and for no reason at all, audio adds will start playing.  Sometimes several at the same time.  Sometimes I'll get re-directed to an obvious spam site.
I've tried resetting Safari, clearing everything (Reset Safari with everything checked), restarting the computer, etc., to no avail.  Safari preferences are set to block cookies from third parties and advertiseres, deny without promption and asking websites not to track me.
The pop-up blocker setting is gone, vanished.  Unless I'm blind and someone can enlighten me.
I've stopped using Safari all together and have been using Firefox, which runs fine.
    Any suggestions?

Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here: http://www.opendns.com/home/nobloat ) and further independent information can be read here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
    and here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
I would also suggest you install GlimmerBlocker, which will stop all pop-ups:

    but disable Java.

  • TS1388 My battery on my macbook pro all of a sudden keeps using the battery power really quickly, so I am having to rechareg it constantly.  Does anyone know why this occurs or how to fix it.  I have used all the energy saving tips.

Hi My battery on my macbook pro keeps running low on power very quickly and I have to keep recharging it.  This has never happened before. I have used all the power saver options, but it keeps happening.  Can anyone help. The battery seems to be losing power even when it is turned off.

    Hi BigThinker,
How old is your Mac? If it is an older one, then the battery may just be dying. You can check by clicking on the Apple in the upper left-hand corner, then clicking on About This Mac>More Info>System Report, then click on Power (about half way down the list). At the top of the resulting display, you should see the following type of info:
The Health Information will tell you if your battery is going to need replacement soon. If it says Normal, then it is not the battery.
    Cheers,
