Safari memory leak

does anyone have any idea if this will EVER be resolved. If I leave my safari open it gradually eats up all my ram!
Its been happening for tooooo long.
I expect more from Apple.

Yes, the memory leak is a definite problem that people in the open-source community along with Apple are attempting to resolve. To some extent, the same problem occurs with Firefox. Best remedy at the moment is to "quit Safari", then restart, which resets the memory requirement to a more manageable level.
I have noticed certain web sites tick up the memory usage, called "World Leaks". Some of these are Java driven sites, others Flash driven. Even some of Apple's web site pages seem to contribute. The web is evolving rapidly. It's quite a can of worms to contain, monitor and coordinate.

Safari memory leak with Facebook

I've been noticing that anytime I access facebook Safari's memory explodes. Even if I just load one page, any page on facebook and then let it sit. Within about 15 minutes Safari will consume all available memory. Did some searching and surprised to not see mention of this here or anywhere else. Safari version is 5.0.5
Any ideas? Anyone else experiencing this.

if you're using chromw, as long as auto update is enabled, it will have flash updated, it is built in.

Safari Memory Leak (especially with Google Reader)

Safari starts gobbling up memory with use, never releasing it. I have turned off extensions, moved all internet plugins to disabled directory, restarted, etc. but nothing helps. Right now its sitting at 1.5GB real memory usage.
One quick way for me to replicate this issue is to go through a few hundred google reader items. It never releases memory even when I close that google reader tab. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

Memory leaks continuing in Safari and Web Kit

Will Apple ever fix the Safari memory leak?
As many of you know lots of reports over the years of Safari & Webkit having problems with memory leaks, and haven't seen a fix to it yet. This is a very important factor for usability of Safari.
A memory leak is when, after a period of time, your browser, which is the online field that's designed to function like a page and is used to access web pages and surf the World Wide Web, consumes more and more of your computer's memory until it reaches a point where it literally becomes impossible to use your computer. It's like your computer's stuck in cyber mud. You have to close any open software program or restart the entire computer.
Safari starts about 426.9 MB of real memory and 412.6 MB of virtual memormy and can go up to 1Gb of memory.
Has anyone come up with a fix to this problem ? If anyone has a workaround for this, please share it.
Meanwhile, Apple really should eliminate this problem once and for all.
FYI, I'm using Safari version 5.0.3 and the latest WebKit r72487 which was built on 21 November 2010.

My experience is that the same thing happens with Firefox and Chrome. The only difference with Chrome is that since the tabs are separate threads, they consume memory separately. The nice thing about that is that once the tab is closed memory is instantly freed. However, the helper thread always gets larger. Whether this is a memory leak or a consequence of having an application open over a long period of time is -I believe- open to discussion. I have experienced similar results with Eclipse (a memory intensive application). Daily shutdown/reboot and a few "Quit"s per a few hours fixes this issue. I don't know whether you would like to do this, though.

Memory leak issues persist in Safari 6.0.5 (it's about time that Apple actually fixed this)

Safari has been notorious for its memory leaks for years, as I'm sure many of you know. I stopped using Safari as my main browser in 2010 or so, and I instead began to use Chrome. However, I recently had to use Safari to access some webpages, and I neglected to quit out of it. A few hours later, my computer slowed to a complete crawl. I was confused, because my computer never slows down to such a crawl, so I went into Activity Monitor to find the 'Safari Web Content' process using all of my available RAM, which was nearly 6 GB. Needless to say, Safari was force quit after that. I've heard that some plugins will cause this, but Flash was my only active plugin. Flash is, indeed, a heaping pile of crap that will readily eat resources as it sees fit- but this never happens to me in Chrome, and I use Flash all of the time n Chrome. This was after it had been sitting idle for quite some time, and I imagine that it would have used more RAM if it could.

Regardless of whether Flash is being used, from your Safari menu bar click Help > Installed Plug-ins.
Try troubleshooting extensions and third party plug-ins.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that off if there are any installed. Quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn extensions back on then uninstall one a time to test.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect: Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

Checked to see exactly how much space is available ??
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
Checked the startup disk lately?
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the disk needs repairing, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you can access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.

Safari web process - memory leak?

Mac Pro seemed to have slowed to a crawl.
Safari 5.1.2 on SL 10.6.8
Activity Monitor showed I was low on memory - over 7GB was being used by 'safari web process' - slowly close all open pages until only left with two - one was simply the 'bing' home page, the other a page that had failed to load.
Anyone else had this kind of thing recently?

Safari has a known memory leak. Open teh Activity Monitor, sort the list of apps by Real Memory column. You will find one called Safari Web Content. This is the cause. If you are running an safari extensions, they use SWafari Web Content to run, you can try turning off your extensions to see if that helps. About the only know fix now, is to close safari regularly. 5.1.2 was suppose to close some leaks but has not. There are reports you can run safari in 32bit mode but I haven't confirmed if this helps or not.

Memory Leak in latest Safari (5.0.4)?

Since I updated to the latest Mac OS/X update Safari's memory usage seems to be increasing in a way that looks like a memory leak. I usually leave my mac running all of the time and find that after a few days Safari is using over a 1GB of real memory and 3-5GB of virtual memory. Sometimes it also seems to freeze — with the disk churning in the background when I try to switch to it.
It may be related to viewing high-resolution images (it seems to happen more often if I view very high-resolution pictures, for example Nasa Picture of the Day).
Anyone else seeing these issues? Occasionally it crashes when I try to kill it — I'll post the dump info next time.

Delete the Safari cache and history more often, not to mention restarting your Mac.
Disable plug-ins in Safari / Preferences - Security. See if that helps.
Check Safari / Preferences - Extensions.
Occasionally it crashes
Post a crash log so we can try and help if emptying the cache and history trail / plugins / Extensions aren't the issue.
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash information.
Now copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply here. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.

Memory leak in Safari 4 & 5

In 10.5 and 10.6, Safari has what I think is called a memory leak. It ties up memory that it is not actually using, so that its use balloons. I can quit and re-open all the same windows and gain half a gig of memory back.
Anybody know a way to stop this?

There is an on-going thread from Aug 2009 about "Snow Leopard" and "Memory Leak" or similarly "Memory Hog" etc and not releasing memory as well as how Safari is one of the worst offenders for many others.
Some have 4GB RAM and no trouble, some with same amount but do.
And of course clearing Previews, History, Cache, even the Bookmarks cache.

Flash and other plug-ins, (flash has its own cache) and using something to only load Flash if desired.
But most found 10.5 and Safari 4 "better behaved" and not the issue 5.0 and 10.6 are.

Inactive Memory leak in Safari 4.0.3

There is a memory leak in Safari 4.0.3. I haven't isolated it to a particular page since I usually have 15-20 tabs open when I notice the spinning ball, caused by VM paging. When this happens, according to Activity Monitor, Safari.app uses between 500-2000mb of "Real Memory", yet when I close it almost all of the blue "Inactive Memory" is released. The last time this happened, it freed 5.4gb.
This is getting annoying and is certainly bad for the SSD. Any idea if there's a fix?
BTW I've got the new Pro with 8 gigs of DDR3 and an SSD, and 20mbit FIOS internet... There is no excuse whatsoever for the spinning ball!

The way Safari accumulates memory is normal. The way it is trying to page the memory to disc and error-ing is not. I think the integrity of your disc volume / catalog and directories may be to blame.
Try a bit of basic maintenance:
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

Safari 3 / Flash memory leak

I recently upgraded to Safari 3.0.4 and am noticing a huge memory leak problem if I leave a Flash-enabled page open for any length of time. I monitor the Virtual Memory usage of Safari using Activity Monitor. Usage goes from around 280MB to as high as 2.65GB before I have to shut down Safari for my 1GB machine to be usable.

On my machines, Safari has had challenges with World Leaks since the beginning (right now it is using 750 mb of RAM with 38 tabs open on one window). A bit excessive, however, it's not a red flag given the amount of RAM and processor speed of the iMac. Nonetheless, it ought to be a lot more efficient with RAM usage. I would use the latest WebKit build, however, some of my Safari add-ons would be incompatible.
BTW, I too see jumps in usage, especially when accessing Flash content. The "only" way out is to quit/restart. Important to send feedback to Apple via the Safari Menu>Report Bugs to Apple.

Safari Flash Player Memory Leak?

I recently got a new macbook pro, 13" model (with the 2.2 GHz dual processor). Last night I noticed that it was running pretty slowly, something that I figured was weird considering the amount of power it has compared to my four year old desktop computer. I managed to isolate the problem: a memory leak with safari's flash player. I watch a lot of netflix and some TV episodes...and it turns out that the flash player accumulates up to 2 GB of RAM by itself. My pro has 4 GB of RAM and it never goes above 50% of that memory unless I watch videos. Only way to get around the problem is to force close the flash player application...but it's annoying to have to reload what I was watching. Any ideas on the fix for this?

Far as I know, Netflix doesn't use Flash, it uses Silverlight.

Safari 4 memory leak?

With Safari 4 open for only 12 hours, it's VSize has already grown to over 35GB while it's RSize stays around a couple hundred MB. Any other users experiencing this?

I've been waiting for Chrome to come out of beta.
When I first checked the VSize of Safari 4 on Dec 31 after it was open for about a week, it was close to 100GB! Before Safari 4's release, I could play any of my 1000 Logic Express 8 files without stopping because of insufficient system RAM, although it was close to the limit my 2GB provided. Logic Express 8's built-in CPU monitor would show one core peaking when the first notes were played but the music continued on to finish as both cores would then fairly equally share the processing load. After Safari 4's release and with the browser open for any appreciable length of time, I couldn't get past the first note on any of them the first time I tried to play them. They would play the second time I tried. System resource allocation was slow because of Safari 4?
Also post-Safari 4: Every other day, I was losing 100-300MBs of hard drive space after waking up my Mac. A shut down would restore the space back. Something to do with routine maintenance tasks and Console logs? As long as I close Safari before sleeping my Mac, this has not happened.
By the looks of other related topics in Safari for Mac discussions and the response here by Barry on Jan 1, there appears to be no performance issues related to any memory leaks in Safari 4, which makes me think my VSize problem is a Core Duo and/or Tiger specific one.

Safari 6 leaking memory help

I just got the 15inch macbook pro with retina display and upgraded the ram to 16gb.
I watched a few(4-5) hd video on youtube and around the 3 video, I started to feel that the video wasn't playing smoothly.
It got worse when viewing the 4 and 5 videos.
Then I checked activity monitor and found that safari was using 13gb of my ram!
btw the video was only 720p and around 3mins each...
I quit safari and everything run smoothly again.
Is there a way to fix this?
I don't wanna use firefox cuz it doesn't support retina display yet and i hate chrome!

In my Macbook Pro 4GB RAM recently note memory leak when I opened Safari even with 1 or two windows open without refresh the web content.
In Activity monitor could see consume Web Content the Safari Spend more the 2 GB RAM (Memory Real become Memory Inactive)
Solution: Disable All Extensions and probe one to one. Finding that Fastesttube Extension was responsible.

Safari + Javascript = Slowdown and Memory Leak?

I've pinned down what I think is some problem with Safari and Javascript.
If I leave Safari open for over 24 hours, with several pages open in tabs, in Activity Monitor Safari shows about 1.38Gig of VM and Safari is molasses slow.
Turning off Javascript immediately restores the speed in Safari but the HUGE VM usage remains.
So, I turned off Javascript, relaunched Safari, opened the exact same sites in tabs and left Safari sitting there for 24+ hours. It's now using only 203MBs of VM and it's still swishy fast as it should be.
It seems like a problem between Safari and Javascript. Can anyone else confirm this phenomena before I send an official report to Apple?

Confirmed. Running Safari with the Debug option on will tell you that there are some memory leaks with JavaScript objects.

Memory Leaks   Unresponsive Mouse

2009 8 core Mac Pro w/ 24 GB of RAM, ATI Radeon 4870, and a SeriTek PCIe eSATA card (card only has drives connected when running a manual drive clone). When running Toast 10 or Parallels 9, my RAM will fill up (I use a program called Menu Meters to monitor stuff). This machine worked just fine under OS 10.9 and earlier - no issues like this at all. ClamXAV will also completely fill the RAM up (the meter will be full green, instead of part green, then mostly grey when Toast or Parallels fills it up). I have to use Terminal to purge it so that the machine is usable.
The other thing that happens is that sometimes when the computer wakes up or I am in the middle of doing something, the mouse will still move, but the dock will not pop open and the left button the mouse doesn't respond. The right button will open the right click menu, but will not respond normally at all. I have tried a different Magic Mouse, but the problem is the same.
I thought that it may be a problem with the factory RAM and the Kingston RAM not playing nicely together. So I ran it with just the factory 8 GB and then ran it with the Kingston 16 GB - the problem persists no matter which RAM is installed. All of the RAM also passes the memory tests in Rember and TechTool.
So, I need to find out if someone thinks that maybe the bluetooth module may be going bad causing the mouse issues. I also need to find out what is causing the memory leaks. I followed the steps that someone gave on this site to boot into safe mode, repair permissions, reset PRAM, then reset SMC (or the other way around - I did it like they said to). It did nothing to fix the problem.
I need some guidance here. As I stated early on, the machine worked perfectly with OS 10.9. I have WAY too much software that I use, so doing a completely fresh install is out of the question - I don't have time to reload everything. This problem is annoying and I know that I am not the only one having these issues. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
