Safari new tab flicker of old image residue
Can anyone explain why, when i first open safari and double click to open a new tab, just before the Top Sites page loads i get a flicker of a partly scrambled image? This image is usually, but not always, of a site or screen that has just previously been open in the display, sometimes from a webpage, sometimes from a window such as system preferences. Occasionally the scrambled image is nothing that has been on my screen in the last 24hrs, as far as i can remember. This isn't a problem, per se, but a funny quirk that makes me wonder if there is something amiss with my Macbook. How is this image left hanging around to then briefly re-appear in a scrambled format?
Hello folks,
I have had this problem for a while now. The problem ONLY occurs with Safari if I open a new tab and have preferences set to top sites. What I see when I open a new tab is pixelization and/or flickering. I thought it was hardware issue so I called Apple. We ran HW tests and they told me it was not. They advised it was likely a plugin or software issue. We re-installed Snow Leopard (maintaing all data) and that did not help. We did tons of other things, all to no avail. Apple suggested I do a WIPE and start over. They also suggested I do NOT reimage from my time machine backup as to not bring back whatever plugin or SW
So I finally got around to that this weekend. I am on an essentially virgin system. The only two apps I installed are Handbrake and Skype. I have not done any flash update, plugins or anything else. The problem still exists
I have an excellent and short video capture that shows this but not sure how I can upload that here.
I guess from reading this post that I should go to Lion - which is on my list of things to do but need to check on compatibility of some SW/HW first.
OH btw, some specifics: Imac 27" Snow Leopard, 12GB Ram, all SW is up to date
Just thought I would throw this out there...

How do I turn off frequently visited in safari new tab.
How do I turn off frequently visited in safari new tab. Note, I still want favorites to show. But I feel it is inappropriate for safari to track frequently visited sites. I wish I could use private browsing more, but I hate that keychain doesn't work in private mode. Also, why can't I turn history completely off?
To turn on private browsing, tap Safari, then tap in the lower-right corner. Tap Private to turn private browsing on.
Note: If you're using an iPad, tap , then Private.
Tap again > turn off private.

I want to achieve at least one of two things: either set New Tabs to open with Google automatically; or at least, to have Google pinned to the New Tab page. (Google is my home page.) When a new page opens, all the images are blank. I've read through the Help pages & tried various things. I've tried dragging Google from the Bookmarks to the New Tab, but this only opens Google. I've tried clicking on the blank images, but nothing happens. I've toggled the blank images off for now, so at least I don't need to look at them. I am doing a university course online, so efficiency is really important to me! Those extra clicks really add up & distract!... Thanks in advance :)
# In the [[Location bar autocomplete|Location bar]], type '''about:config''' and press '''Enter'''. The about:config "''This might void your warranty!''" warning page may appear.
# Click '''I'll be careful, I promise!''', to continue to the about:config page.
# Type '''browser.newtab.url''', in the bar on the top of the page.
# Double click the first result, '''a new window should appear'''.
# Type '''www.google.com''' in the window, click ok.
# '''Open a new tab''', does it go to google? -
Safari New Tabs vs. New Window
when i use safari on any computer weather it be a Mac or a PC, Safari doesn't allow me to click on a link and it open in a new tab. I know that you can go into preferences/general tab, and at the bottom select open links in new tab or window. I've done that. Just the other day, on my friends "BRAND NEW" Mac Book, I tested it out the same way. When you click a link in any page Safari will only open it in a new window.. Why does it not open in new tabs? The only way I can get a new tab is by Ctrl T/Command T... or by using the display menu... Also, FYI, I do have the latest version of Safari and I did try it after I downloaded the Latest Upgrade.. I think this problem is everywhere and its because Apple has not found out about it..
There is a downfall to the terminal-entry hack/mod... it forces everything into a new tab. Pop-up from a Web-App? get's it's own tab, not the small window the app was trying to open. Using an online video app which usually pops up a small window with the video? Now it gets it's own tab... :/
It's annoying to not have links open to Tabs but also the 'hard coding' to force everything into a tab has it's drawbacks too.
I agree: Apple should just have this feature. Even IE has had it for quite some time... although not set by Default when it first rolled-out. And of course Firefox has it.
<rant>
Side-comment: Love Apple stuff to no end after being a Windows admin for over 13 years... but wow sometimes it seems like Apple completely misses the basics. Like this crazy thing my original Palm Pilot in 1995 had... cut-and-paste... good thing the iPhone... just ... got... that. :/ And why can't I cut-and-paste a file? :/ And then of course why doesnt Safari let me open new links in Tabs?
</rant>
Any way to find a happy medium where Safari opens a link in a new window unless the link specifies the dimensions of the window to open and/or specifies a separate window? -
I struggle to believe that I am the only person experiencing this problem.
I just hope somebody has the decency to spend a couple of minutes replying with a resolution.
Every time I click the + sign on my iPad, Safari to open a new tab page..
I am greeted by loads of icons / boxes that are links to my bookmarks.
I want to delete those icons / boxes from the page
If I want to visit one of my bookmarks I use the bookmark icon at the top right of the page.
If I long press on the icons they do not wobble / delete
How can I delete them ?
I dislike them so much I am beginning to think that I will have to stop using safari,
and use a different search engine.....but I shouldn't have to.If you don't want to see these bookmarks when you open a new tab and you don't want to delete them you'll need to move them. Now as you probably know there isn't really a move function for Bookmarks in iPad, so what I'd recommend is Tap Bookmarks>Favourites tap one of the bookmarks in this folder and when it loads up save it to another location on your iPad - repeat for all bookmarks in this folder, once done tap Bookmarks>Favourites select EDIT and delete all bookmarks in the favourites folder.
You need to bear in mind that FAVOURITES is simply a folder storage area for Bookmarks so any bookmarks you delete from this folder won't be available under Bookmarks unless you follow the process outlined above.

My husband and I both have ipad2. But our safari options are different. Right now, to open a new page I have to click the "plus" sign in the uper right corner. However, on. Husband's iPad, he has the option to next to the bookmark which looks like "9 Dots in a square"
How do I change my safari layout to the multi windows option? (9 dots in a square)? It sounds to me like you are running iOS 5 on your iPad if you have the + sign in the Safari toolbar. You cannot go back to the 9 dots in a square version that your husband has in his version of Safari. He must be running a version older than 5.0. - if he still has that view in Safari.
What you can do is download the iCab Mobile browser for your iPad. That browser has tabs, just like you have now in Safari, and it also has thumbnail views - the dots in the upper left corner. So you can use either way of opening new pages in the browser. -

Starting Firefox in Safe Mode does indeed get rid of the behavior I find undesirable. Thank you.
However, I still wonder why one should have to go through the extra step (starting in Safe Mode) to avoid the second tab in the newly opened window.
I have not added any add-ons to Firefox on my PC.
The problem suddenly started occurring a while back, after an automatic update of Firefox to the latest version.
Any thoughts on WHY this is happening? -
Safari new bookmarks replaced by old icloud bookmarks
In order to have my latest bookmarks on safari (osx 10.10.3) I do a manual overwrite, using xmarks, with the option "overwrite local bookmarks with server bookmarks". It works well but a few hours later after the overwrite the safari bookmarks are replaced by the "old" bookmarks stored on icloud.
In other words icloud bookmarks are not synchronized properly and do not reflect the latest changes made on safari on my iMac.
Any ideas? Thank you.Make sure you have Bookmarks selected in System Preferences / iCloud

I had set up my new tab page with an image I uploaded. It worked fine for months, if not years.
Today, I got a 'crash' that asked me to start Firefox in 'safe' mode or 'restore'. I chose 'restore'.
Thereupon, my image was gone from my new tab page. I cannot find how to restore it, and add ons that supposedly allow me to add my own image are not helpful. At least, I cannot figure them out.
Can you provide help on a computer for dummies level?Sounds that you have reset Firefox and created a new profile.
You can try to create a new profile or reset Firefox.
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems
When you reset Firefox then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords, form data) is automatically imported and the current profile folder will be moved to the desktop to an "Old Firefox Data" folder.<br />
Installed extensions and other customizations (toolbars, prefs) that you have made are lost and need to be redone.
It is possible to recover more data from the old profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.
You can try to restore the prefs.js file and copy this file from the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop shortcut to the current Firefox program folder.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

When i click a new tab button the background image appears but quickly disappears... I know that this shouldn't happen but it always happen no matter what i try... Can anyone help me??? Please??? I want my background, that is provided by the theme, to stay pemanently when i click the new tab button because the white background for a new tab is totally not my style..

Problem No. 1 //// when I google the word (boy) as example >>>>> then select image >>>>> right click on any image and choose (open in an new tab) >>>>>> new tab opened but the image not appear, instead a black window appear .
Problem No. 2 //// in any windows >>> if I choose the link >>> the link did not open until the (new window opened and my antivirus warm me that there is a dangerous thread must remove or blocked)If your security software is blocking images then you need to check the settings there or contact its website for support.
If images are missing then check that you do not block images from some domains.
*Tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu bar.
Check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"
Check "Tools > Page Info > Media" for blocked images
*Select the first image link and use the cursor Down key to scroll through the list.
*If an image in the list is grayed and "<i>Block Images from...</i>" has a checkmark then remove this checkmark to unblock images from this domain.
Make sure that you do not block (third-party) images, the <b>permissions.default.image</b> pref on the <b>about:config</b> page should be 1.
Make sure that you haven't enabled a High Contrast theme in the Windows/Mac Accessibility settings.
Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own colors.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above"
Note that these settings affect background images.

Add a window to an existing ff window as a new tab
I love the "tear off tab" functionality and I use it all the time. I also use the "undo detach tab" extension. however, there are times when I have a window open (that was not created from a detached tab) and I want to move that window into another ff window as a new tab. I tried dragging the favicon and this did create a new tab but the old window remained and had to be closed manually (and the tab's contents were refreshed, which I didn't want either).
Hi zarberg,
Glad to hear that the problem has been solved.
Thanks for your sharing .
Best Regards,
Elton Ji

This is an example of one of the sites that pops up in a new tab without me having visited it before wanting it to open causing the mouse image to flicker.

Safari "flickers" /"pixlization" with new tab and top site option
I was using a 20" Imac running snow leopard. Then June'11 I got a 27" Imac and did a complete migration from the old mac to the new. Btw the new 27" is running Snow 10.6.8
Not too long after running with the new 27"Imac, I noticed that within Safari when opening a new tab, I would intermittenly get a "flicker" briefly when opening a new tab. The only other way I know how to explain it is like on Sattellite TV when you get a signal loss - you see momentary pixle flicker on the tv.
I am working with Mac's 2nd level support. The first guy had me to a reinstall of MacOS. Since this problem is easily reproduceable, it seemed to work. However, 2 weeks later it came back. The next guy had me delete all my preferences for EVERYTHING. This initially seemed to work, but quickly the problem came back.
The work around is to set preferences to open an empty page upon a new tab being opened.
It just has me more curious than anything now. Apple's next actions were for me to 1) uninstall every 3rd party app or plugin (NOT easy to do) or 2) wipe/erase the hard drive, reinstall clean mac OS and then bring data back slowly (not easy for me).
I guess the other option would be to upgrade to Lion, see what happens.
I have a very short video which shows this, but nor sure how or where to upload it to show people.
Any thoughts...Btw I was able to find all my Safari Plugin's - hey its a start. Any of these look like potentials to cause this:
