Safari not adhering to proxy settings

I'm a new Mac user, so bear with me if I'm missing something obvious...
I am attempting to use Safari through a proxy, while connected to a VPN. However, after setting the proxy values within the network settings, Safari still does not attempt to send traffic through the defined proxy. A tcpdump on the proxy server confirms that no traffic is inbound to the proxy from my IP. Using the same proxy settings in firefox, I can connect just fine.
Any ideas?

I am having the same problem and some insights will be appreciated. I did notice one thing, though.
If I set my proxy, then connect using the VPN, it seems to pick up the proxy setting. Similarly, on disconnect, I unset my proxy and then disconnect and safari picks up the new settings. If I do not do things in this order then I get into a situation when either Safari thinks there is no proxy when one has been set or, worse, thinks that it should be connecting to a proxy when there is none.
This seems to indicate that there is some kind of cache of proxy information in Safari which is cleared on the VPN connect and disconnect.
Any way around this issue will be much appreciated.

Proxy servers can be used multiple ways - like protecting your identity behind a proxy server, managing network traffic, limiting access to certain websites...

    network: Connecting http://oraclesystemsupport.webex.com:80/ with proxy=DIRECT
It seems it can't load the class because it's trying to connect DIRECT and not via my corporate proxy.
My proxy is configured in my system settings as "auto proxy discovery". Everything else honours the proxy setting. Safari has no problem and connects to all internal & external sites without issue.  Even Firefox has no problem, and can launch the webex fine. If I configure a proxy ipaddress in the "Java Preferences" network proxy settings, I can launch the webex. But when set to "use system settings", it doesn't use the proxy.
So I can't figure out why java, when launched through safari, doesn't respect the system proxy setting.
I know it's nothing to do with local caching because I get the same with a fresh user I created especially for testing.
Has Apple broken something?    It was working fine until I applied the latest updates last week.

It seems to be an issue with 'liveconnect' (which I assume is needed by webex).
    liveconnect can be tested here.
          http://www.jdams.org/live-connect-test/
The above test works fine when a proxy isn't involved.  But on the corporate VPN liveconnect get stuck trying to connect DIRECT instead of going via the proxy.
Is this a known bugs?  any ideas?

  • Firefox does not retain my proxy settings.

Everytime I launch the browser I have to reset the proxy settings in order for it to work. I don't use a proxy but Firefox seems to think I do and assumes that i use some random proxy that it populates. I don't have this issues with other browsers so its not my connection settings.

I have the same problem and have tried all those things. I have also tried deleting the Firefox profile and restarting. I have also tried reinstalling and not adding any addons. I have even removed Firefox registry keys and any Firefox files left by the uninstall before attempting to install it again. No matter what I do, Firefox begins to stop retaining any history. This all started when I upgraded to 4.0. It is frustrating because I have seen all over the net that others are having this problem. I backed up to the 3.6 version and that fixed the problem. After a while, I decided to go ahead and go back to 4.0 to see if the issue would stop. But it does it again!

  • Safari not working in proxied network

We access the internet through a proxy. Since installing mountain lion this morning, it refuses to load any pages from the internet. Given me "You are not connected to the Internet" error messages.
Local servers are accessible and the network is working because I can access the internet with firefox just fine.
    Any ideas?

    GOT IT!
Apple changed the valid locations where Safari can read it's proxy pac file from.
As I understand it (much help from this thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/19020620#19020620 ), Safari reads the network settings when it starts up and if a proxy pac file is defined, it reads the file.
However - and this is the important thing - it is only allowed to read it from a list of specific locations. If it's anywhere else, Safari will fail to read it (silently) and simply not work. You can validate this by looking for this error in your system logs:
    27/07/12 12:59:42.243 AM sandboxd[24973]: ([24972]) WebProcess(24972) deny file-read-data /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/custom-proxy.pac
This is where it gets a little tricky, in Mountain Lion the list of valid locations appear to have changed. You need to look in (and this is different from Snow Leopard and Lion)
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/WebKit2.framework/WebProcess.app/Contents/Reso urces/com.apple.WebProcess.sb
    To see the list.
In my case I created the /Library/Managed\ Preferences directory which did not exist. Copied the pac file there, set the new location in my network preferences and restarted Safari to get it to read the file.
    Now everything works.

  • Safari not honoring text encoding settings

I'm trying to track down a problem I'm having with Safari Version 2.0.3 (417.9.2) and text encoding. Unfortunately I believe it had something to do with SafariStand, and I somehow can't fully remove it. I have removed SafariStand, SIMBL, and trashed Safari's plist to no avail.
The problem is no matter what text encoding I select from Preferences | Appearance, it will not change the way text is displayed in certain pages. If I change the encoding from View | Text Encoding the encoding will change and the page will be displayed correctly. I've reset Safari via the menu option, trashed its plist and rebooted, and nothing works. Is there a preference file I am missing?

The problem is no matter what text encoding I select
from Preferences | Appearance, it will not change the
way text is displayed in certain pages.
That is the way it is supposed to work. This setting only takes effect when the page being viewed itself has no encoding stipulated in its html.
    If I change
the encoding from View | Text Encoding the encoding
will change and the page will be displayed correctly.
That is the correct and only way to change the display of a page which has an encoding already stipulated in its html.

  • Wi-Fi Proxy settings work in Safari, but not recognised by other apps?

    Hi all,
At home, my iPod Touch (gen two, Firmware 2.2.1) connects fine to our wireless router and all applications (e.g. Safari, Tap Tap Revenge 2 etc) can access the internet. We have no proxy setting at home..
Then, at uni we use special "manual http" proxy settings and had to jump through a bunch of hoops downloading certificates etc. I can connect fine to this wireless network at uni. Safari works perfectly with these settings, as expected.
However when I try and access the internet from another application (for example, Youtube or Mail) the request will time out. My assumption is that it is because these applications are not using the proxy settings that i set -- whereas Safari is, and is therefore working normally. The same issue occurs on every other application besides Safari when connecting to the web. Keep in mind this all works at home.
I don't think it is an issue with things being blocked by the uni, as we can get Live Messenger working fine on our laptops there. In fact there is documentation provided by the uni to connect to the wireless from an iPod/iPhone.
Does anyone know why the other applications (including ones coming default on the phone) are ignoring these proxy settings?
Thought i might ask here, as I'm not back at uni until tuesday.
    Thanks in advance.

Proxy Settings may be set by connection however - that does not imply that all of the services provided by Apple Utilise these connections.
*iPod Touch - No Firmware Updates Applied*: Able to use services like Google Maps, YouTube, Weather
    (Confirmed on 3 iPod Touches)
*iPod Touch - Latest Firmware Updates Applied:* Unable to use services like Google Maps, YouTube, Weather. (Confirmed that this connection fails on 2/3 that have been upgraded, one is still pre v2 firmware and connects fine)
Both iPod Touches are configured identically - with a static IP address, differing by one digit.
Same DNS, Same Gateway, Same Proxy IP Address, Same Username/Password.
The issue is not caused by configurations, it is caused by a difference in how authenticate proxy configurations are handled between the firmware supplied with a pre v2 iPod Touch, and the updated v2 firmware.
Perhaps v3 will resolve this issue, but at this time if you have any choice, do not upgrade further iPod Touches to v2 if you require internet access via an authenticated proxy in applications such as Maps, Weather, Mail etc.

  • Proxy settings not holding in 10.3.9 on G5's

    Hello all,
I have some G5's that were built by another company to their SOE and I am having issues with them not using the proxy settings I have put into network prefs.
We use a proxy server to get to the net and I have put the correct settings in but Software update doesn't work and Safari doesn't either.
Firefox was on the machine also so I put the proxy setting into it (into it's prefs) and it took the setting OK and got to the net.
It's as if the underlying system won't take notice of the proxy settings.
    Any ideas guys ?

    Problem solved !

  • Safari ignores proxy settings for AJAX requests?

    I'm using Safari 4 on Mac OS X 10.5.7.
When I configure Safari's proxy settings (which redirect to System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> Proxies), all my page requests go through the proxy I configured, except for AJAX requests.
I configured an intercepting proxy (burp suite) to verify this, and indeed, AJAX requests are not being sent to the proxy. I double checked the exact same page on Firefox 3.5 on the same Mac with the same proxy being configured, and in this case the AJAX requests do go via the proxy.
For Safari, I configured the "Web Proxy (HTTP)" and "Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS). Is there anything else I need to do? Is this a bug in Safari?
Thanks in advance for all help.

I'm seeing the same problem. I use privoxy, a local security/privacy/ad-blocking proxy that lives on my computer. Firefox always sends its requests through the proxy, but Safari sometimes ignores the proxy settings. Vienna, my RSS reader, stops going through the proxy when Safari stops doing it. A restart fixes the problem for a while, but eventually the ads start showing up in Safari and Vienna.
I didn't start seeing this problem until Safari 4. I'm currently using the most up-to-date version of Safari, 4.0.3, with Mac OS X 10.5.8 and all other updates as of 12 Sep 2009. Privoxy is version 3.0.10, not the very latest, but it's working.

  • Windows 8 and IE10 and 11 not accepting Proxy Settings via Group Policy from windows server 2003

    Hi
We are still running Windows Server 2003 with a Win7 and Win8 desktop environment. I can control Win7 IE9 settings,
But Win8 systems are running IE10. We have an internal proxy server.
Is there any way to force the proxy settings to the Win8/IE10 or 11 systems .
i have tried with The IE 10 .adm template and applied gpo,but does not have any proxy settings for ie10 and no changes were applies
please can anyone help me regarding this
i want to apply GPO from windows server 2003  to windows 8 ie10/11
    Thanks
    KNC

    Hi,
I agree with Zanderol24, we can install RSAT on a windows8 client, and then we can use Group Policy Management to manage group policy from the client.
For more information about RSAT, we can refer to the following link:
Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) for Windows Client and Windows Server (dsforum2wiki)
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/2202.remote-server-administration-tools-rsat-for-windows-client-and-windows-server-dsforum2wiki.aspx
For more detailed information about how to use GPP to configure the proxy setting for ie10 and ie11, we can refer to the following link:
How to configure Group Policy Preference settings for Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2898604
When we use GPPs you need to be aware of the F5-F8 keys:
Red / Green: GP Preferences doesn’t work even though the policy applied and after gpupdate \force
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/grouppolicy/archive/2008/10/13/red-green-gp-preferences-doesn-t-work-even-though-the-policy-applied-and-after-gpupdate-force.aspx
Besides, aside from using group policy to manage IE, IEAK can also be used to do this.
For IEAK, the following article can be referred to for more information.

  • JWS not Inheriting PROXY settings from Netscape

    Hi!
We are using JWS 1.0.1_01 to launch our application, which needs the proxy settings of the user to connect via SSL to our servers.
We do not have any problems when the user does not use proxies to access the Internet or uses Internet Explorer as their default browser.
For users with Netscape 4.* as their default browsers, many users are not able to launch our application, as it can not find the proxy settings.
They can not download the sample applications of Java Web Start either.
They work fine if they make Internet Explore as their default browser or set the proxy manually in Java Web Start.
As our customers use some sort of scripts for proxy configurations we do not want to set the proxy manually in Java Web Start.
We want to use the proxy settings of the browser.
So I want to know if there is a known issue with Java Web Start not detecting the proxies automatically from Netscape.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks
    -Nawaz

Basically web start can only pick up the settings of whatever
happens to be the current Windows default browser. If that's Netscape then the Netscape settings will be used.
Since your clients are using a script to specify the proxy settings you should also be aware that there's an issue with web start 1.0_01 where it locates the proxy setting based on the first occurrence of the word "Proxy" in that script. This can cause issues if the first proxy
listed is for https only of even if the first occurrence of "proxy" is
    inside a comment.

  • Java Web Start not working with Proxy

I have Java Web Start program not listening to proxy settings. It tries to access localhost using our proxy settings, but with no user name or password. I'm wondering if Java Web Start has proxy settings somewhere. I'm not sure since when we disable the proxy settings the program works without issue. Any thoughts?

For instance Safari uses those System Proxy settings, Firefox uses it's own!
So Java is using it's own, now we're waiting for an expert to drop in!
