Safari not downloading PDF's correctly

I find that Safari since updating to Maverick but any pdf download will not open, Adobe claiming the file to be damaged. Chrome will do the downloads correctly.
In addition I am finding that opening any application is much slower than from Mountain Lion.

Hi
You may have an Adobe PDF plugin blocking the works. Go to your HD>Library>Internet Plugins folder.
If you see an Adobe PDF plugin, move it to the desktop. Then, go to your Applications folder and open either Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. Open the preferences and uncheck the Internet setting for PDF reading.
Then restart Safari and try a PDF.

  • Why does Safari 7 not download pdf's correctly

I can download pdf's using Google with OSX Mavericks but now find Safari 7 fails to download with files that Adobe recognises. I am getting a message saying that the file may be damaged. Any solutions?

Open a Finder window then from the menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
    Click Go.
If you see the:  AdobePDFViewer plugin in the Internet Plug-Ins folder, move it to the trash.
Restart your Mac and try opening a PDF file.

  • Safari Will Not Download pdfs: On One Site and from One Computer Only

On only one computer, at only one web site (my own creation), I suddenly cannot get pdfs to open in Safari 4.0. What might be happening?
    1. I have created 5 web sites for my business. I use RapidWeaver from RealMacSoftware.
    2. Each of the 5 sites I’ve created has downloadable pdfs.
    3. Two of the sites are password protected, but this does not appear to be the source of the problem.
    4. One of these two protected sites (Site A) will not open any pdfs on the site in a Safari browser window on my Intel iMac running 10.5.7. When I click on a pdf link in Safari, I get the gray spinning wheel on a white page (which does not stop after 10+ minutes). If I try to reload the page, a white page results. Trying any other pdf link on this site produces nothing but a white page.
    5. If I option-click on the link, the pdf downloads fine, but I then have to open it. It does not open in Safari, but rather Reader.
    6. This behavior does not occur on two other Macs in my office. One, a MacBook Pro running 10.5.7 and Safari 4.0, opens the pdfs in Safari just fine. Another, a G5 running Tiger with Safari 4.0, also works fine. (FWIW: No problems on Dell running XP Home, via either Explorer or Firefox.)
    7. The behavior also does not occur on the other protected site I have created (Site B) or on any of the other unprotected sites. All computers, all browsers—no problems.
    8. I have the latest Adobe Reader version (9.1.2).
    9. I have repaired permissions and restarted—no luck.
    10. I have republished Site A through RapidWeaver, but there is no change. My web host had a power failure a day or two ago, but all sites were up and running yesterday.
Any clues about what’s going on? I have intentionally not downloaded the apparently available Safari version 4.0.1 because of the several problems reported on the boards.

I tried logging in to the guest account and got a slightly different result: Two of the five websites I've created with RapidWeaver now do not display pdfs using the Adobe Reader plugin.
The common thread now is that the two that don't work are the password protected sites. When I boot back into my main account, the original problem returns: Only one site doesn't work; the other one does.
    Still only on one computer.

  • Can not download PDFs to Safari or Firefox. 27" iMac running 10.8.2. Have disabled two Adobe plug ins per search in community. Did not work. Dowloads fine on other computer (older iMac, 10.6.8). Advice appreciated. Lyman

New iMac 27" running 10.8.2. Can not dowload PDFs. Have taken two Adobe plugins out of library (as suggested in comments I found last night). Did not fix proglem. Older iMac running 10.6.8 sitting next to new one can download fine. Then have to move downloads to new machine to use them. Thanks for help and suggestions. Lyman

My own answer. This was solved by a simple restart of the computer. This is the second time in a week that a restart has been needed to resolve "refuseal to work" type problems. I don't recall restarting being a regular fix in earlier OSs.Hope this doesn't become a standard fix as that could be really tedious. Lyman.

  • Safari not rendering Arabic text correctly

I have Safari 1.0.3 running on Mac OS 10.2.8 and it will not render Arabic text correctly. Isolated letters appear at about half the correct size, which makes pages readable but only with considerable difficulty and annoyance.
I saw some solutions here that related to removing Microsoft fonts, but I removed all fonts from Home:Library:Fonts and quite and restarted Safari, and the problem persists. I also downloaded Firefox 2.0 and the same issue occurs - with the added feature that the tab titles on Firefox also display this anomaly, whereas tab titles on Safari render Arabic correctly.
And by the way, if this issue can be resolved, can safari and other apps be got to use a font other than the extremely ugly and hard-to-read default?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Thanks Tom. The problem though is not that letters
that are meant to be connected are coming out
isolated; letters that are meant to be isolated, e.g.
initial alif, waw, ra and final letters after alif,
waw ra, are displaying way too small.
    Sorry I misunderstood the problem.
Do you think it is worth trying your troubleshooting
tip no. 18? And do you have any idea what sort of
issue could be behind it that it would affect Firefox
    too?
Yes, you may as well try no. 18. That tip, which really has no logic to it, reflects the fact that voodoo is sometimes required to get Jaguar to display Arabic correctly in browsers. Panther was a tremendous improvement in that regard.

  • Safari is downloading pdf files in another language

For some reason Safari has started downloading pdf files in Chinese!  OS is Mavericks.  Adobe Reader is up to latest 11.0.7.  Firefox downloads pdf files in English with no problem!
Is there a system setting or a setting for Safari itself to change this to download pdf files in English?
    thanks,
    Lisa

Hi, thanks for reply but guess what?  I figured it out!  Stupid Adobe plugins!!!
Deleted both these plugins from Internet plugins:
    AdobePDFViewer.plugin
    AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
    Now pdfs download in English!!!

  • Set safari to download pdfs rather than try to use Adobe Reader plugin?

Some websites try to open a pdf file in Safari using the Adobe Reader plugin.  I don't have this plugin (and don't want to), and I would like Safari to download the pdf rather than trying to use the Adobe Reader plugin.  This option exists in Firefox - is there any way to set Safari to do the same thing?

On my machine, OPTION-clicking a link, downloads it or the PDF that it points to. Alternatively, load the PDF and then OPTION-click on the URL and hit the enter key. Sorry, but that's all I have to offer.

  • Why is Safari not displaying some pages correctly?

Safari seems to be messing up again.  Had this problem quite a while ago.  It's not displaying some pages correctly.
Notice the 2 enclosed screen shots.  I went to purchase something (no personal info in the jpgs)
Notice the W-Safari.  Little trash cans by the purchase items missing as well as the submit button and a few other things.  So I opened Chrome.
Notice in the W-Chrome, everything is displaying correctly.
I've had problems like this some time ago but I thought they were fixed.
Thanks for any suggestions or help.

  • 5.1.2 update does not download PDF files

After 5.1.2 update I can no longer download PDF's. Help, need to print shipping labels from USPS

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, monitor, and Ethernet, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account that has the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, perhaps including wireless networking on certain Macs. If you usually connect to the Internet via WiFi, and it doesn’t wohrk in safe mode, connect using an Ethernet cable. If you can’t do that, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and perform a safe login, as follows: Enter your credentials at the login screen, then hold down the shift key and click the “Log in” button. Keep holding the key until the menu bar appears. In this mode, your login items, among other things, won’t load.
In safe mode, test again. Same problem(s) now?
After testing, reboot (if you booted in safe mode) or log out/log in (if you performed a safe login) as usual.

  • Safari not downloading upon click

    Hello,
A friend of mine is running 10.5.8 and Safari 5.0.2. The browser does not download any files upon click of the download link. The link must be right clicked and then "saved as". The same behaviour happens with Firefox as well. This is really surprising as both browsers show the same exact behaviour. Do you have any advice regarding this?
There are no extensions or plug-ins installed with Safari or Firefox.
    Thanks.

    HI,
For the friend running Safari 5.0.2.
There is a Safari update available from the Apple menu / Software Update..
Resetting Safari from the Safari menu may help. Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons, click Reset.
Help here for emptying the Firefox cache. http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/How%20to%20clear%20the%20cache
And since both browsers are having problems downloading files make sure the user can get e-mail. If not, then it might be the internet connection itself causing the problem.
System Preferences / Network. Select the *Assist Me* button then click Diagnostics. If any of the buttons on the left are red, click Continue.

  • Reader X will not download PDFs

Until recently Reader (don't know the version) was able to download PDFs from all of my 3rd party service providers' websites (e.g. banks, Amazon, NetGear, etc.)  After a recent upgrade, it will not do so.  The download, print, up/down, etc. shortcuts on the toolbar and headers are all "dead."  I can right-click on the body of an online PDF and "print" the PDF . . . Not a great solution when you want to keep the PDF on your machine for future reference . . . but downloading is impossible.
I have tried the fixes I found in the Forums (e.g. "display only" in Internet Option).  They do not fix the problem.
Have DOWNgraded to Reader v9.4 and that works properly.
    Any suggestions?

    OK - probloem now solved:
I uninstalled Reader X and Acrobat X Pro.
    Rebooted PC,
    Re-installed my Acrobat X Pro.
And now I ma back to normal - can click on PDFs & they open - hurray!!
Simple - I should have done this a couple of days ago.  But with so many listings saying it didn't work for them I didn't go that route...
Glad I changed my mind & gave it a go now.

  • Preview is not opening PDF's Correctly

    Hi there,
My Preview is for some reason not opening pdf's in the way they should look (for instance the text on a letter has turned into symbols, another has the £ signs as dots etc). It's really weird as it's always worked fine. The problem isn't with the pdf's themselves, as they appear perfectly well on my iphone.
Any ideas? I've searched around various forums and Googled this, but it doesn't appear like anyone's had the same problem.
If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it, as I didn't realise quite how many pdf's I get sent!
    Many thanks
    Simon

I've had the same issue with just one PDF that I got sent. It seemed not compatible (yet) with Preview. I installed Adobe PDF reader and it worked. Afterwards I put Adobe in the trash again, as it took so much space on my hard drive. If you have the issue with just some PDF files, you might simply try Adobe Reader.

  • I want Safari to download PDFs, not open them in the browser

The subject line pretty much sums it up Whenever I try to download a PDF it opens it up in Safari instead.
If I open Safari > Preferences > General I can see that the box for "+Open 'safe' files after downloading+" is checked. It also says "Save Downloaded Files to" - and "Downloads" is selected.
Is there anything that I'm missing? In Firefox if I click on a link for a PDF file then it opens straight away. I've searched the archives on this forum and don't seem to be coming up with anything that works for me.
    Thanks for your help!

    Thanks
Is there a way to have this set as the default? My brain is to weary to remember to do this every time
