Safari not opening pdfs
any idea why?
http://faithcommunity.net/about/beliefs.html
click the pdf on the left column... wont download or open in safari. help!
hi ale - Welcome to Apple Discussions!
first a question - did you ever install the acrobat reader plug-in? look in
Macintosh HD > Library > Internet Plug-Ins and also
HOME > Library > Internet Plug-Ins
but my best guess at a fix for you is to do the following:
1 - quit Safari
2 - open up a terminal window (dbl-click on Applications > Utilities > Terminal)
3 - type (or cut/paste) into that terminal window the following command
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool NO
then hit return
4 - start Safari again and try to load that PDF...
post back w/ the results? cheers

I had Acrobat Pro on Windows laptop. Last weekend switched to MacBook Pro and upgraded to Acrobat X with help from Adobe Tech Personnel (and $215). Now, I can open and create PDFs from Acrobat, but my Safari browser doesn't open PDF files when I click on them the way my Firefox did. In fact, Safari just goes to black screen with little pinwheel in the middle spinning forever. How do I tell my browser to use the Adobe Acrobat X app? Thanks.

I'm sure this is my first of many Mac questions regarding Adobe.

Whitehouse, TXWhat is the version of your Mac OS? Is Safari running in 64 bit (check from Safari->Get Info)? If yes, change it to 32-bit and try again.

Safari is unable to open PDF's anymore. I've been getting constantly frustrated by a black screen whenever i click on pdf links. For some time i assumed it was a download thing...even though there is no progressing blue bar in the address window, the link looks complete. There are never any error messages, all i get is a black safari window. I have checked in firefox and all download fine.
Is this a known bug? If so it's been going on for a particulary long time now.Hi
You may have an Adobe PDF plugin blocking the works. Go to your HD>Library>Internet Plugins folder.
If you see an Adobe PDF plugin, move it to the desktop. Then, go to your Applications folder and open either Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. Open the preferences and uncheck the Internet setting for PDF reading.
Then restart Safari and try a PDF. -
Safari not opening pdf; getting blank screen
Using OSX Lion. When I click on a pdf to open in Safari, I get a blank screen on the browser. No trouble with same pdf using other browser.
Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
/Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again. -
Safari not opening PDF files. All I see is gray screen. Why?
I'm trying to open a PDF file from a very secure website and all I see is a gray screen when I click on the link. Why does this happen? How do I fix it?

It use to work fine, but lately, Safari will not open PDF files from certain sites. It is OK when a site downloads a pdf to open it. It downloads it and Preview then opens it. But for other sites such as my bank web site, it opens the pdf within Safari and I just get a blank page.
It use to work, any idea how I can fix that?Your problem isn't solved, you just added to it. Safari is perfectly capable of displaying PDF files without using any third-party applications or plugins, but you just installed one. Acrobat Reader is bloatware and totally unnecessary, so if you want to use Safari's built-in capability, do this:
1. Quit Safari if it's running.
2. Launch Acrobat Reader and go to Preferences > Internet and uncheck the box for the section at the top labeled "Display PDFs in browser using:".
3. Go to HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins and delete the Adobe Reader plugin.
4. Enter this command in Terminal, press Enter, then quit Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool false
Restart Safari and try dragging a PDF file from your Mac directly into an open browser window; it should render without any problems.

Safari will not open pdf files.
Safari will not open pdf files, instead I get a blank grey screen. How can I get a viewable and downloadable screen/file? Tried Alt/Option to view and it doesn't work either. Firefox and Chrome will not work either.
For Mac check the Safari preferences.
General to set the options for opening links from applications.
Tabs to set the other options.
Hold down the command key to open any link in a new tab.
Sorry, gave up windows several years ago. -

Could not open PDF Files with Safari using Lion - Solution
Two for one solution:
After installing Lion on my Macbook Pro, I could not open PDF files on line via Safari and iPhoto 11 kept crashing.
Well, the solution for bothy problems was to remove the "3ivx" file.
The easiest way to do so is go to Applications > 3ivx folder > run Remove 3ivx app.
OR:
Finder > Library folder > Application Support folder > drag "3ivx" folder to trash and trash.Does Safari - Help - Installed Plug-ins show anything for pdf other than WebKit built-in PDF ?

I've seen an unconfirmed report that the "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you might need to remove it as well, if applicable.

Make sure you have updated Acrobat X to the latest version 10.1.3. They updated the PDF plug-in in 10.1.1: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/837/cpsid_83708/attachments/Acrobat_Reader_ReleaseNote_ 10.1.1.pdf#page=4
