Safari not playing *.WMV flies

Any time I try to view pages with the "windows media player" built into a website to view a movie (or streaming media like on XM radio), the movie doesn't play; rather opens my own separate version to play the WMV file externally.
How do I get my wmv files to play within safari?? The "player" usually shows up as that blue lego piece with the ? on it, then opens the file externally through windows media player.
This is the error box I get:
"Some content on this page requires an Internet plug-in that Safari doesn’t support. The application “Windows Media Player” may be able to display this content. Would you like to try?"
Any thoughts?
Everything works fine in Firefox; any quicktime movies play within Safari
Thanks for the help!

Why is this an issue? As long as I have used Safari, it has opened WMP on it's own. So it does work, and in my opinion, better. Then you can minimize the WMP window, and it's out of the way. Why do you want it to play within the browser?

• Safari not playing embedded midi music clips

I recently noticed that embedded midi music clips in Apple Mail and in Safari do not play. Basically, I am referring to background music one often hears while going to some web sites. Particularly those individual web sites folks have created. Of course, many on this forum, who have never been a Windows user and specifically, Internet Explorer, probably never realized there even was any background music.
This is not necessarily a issue for me, but it is for my Mom ,who, along with many others her age, like animated graphics and music in their emails and web sites.
I still can't believe Apple Mail and Safari can't auomatically play embedded midi files. Especially given that Internet Explorer and Outlook Express can.
Many one option is using Firefox and Thunderbird for a Mac?

Hi,
I still can't believe Apple Mail and Safari can't auomatically play embedded midi files. Especially given that Internet Explorer and Outlook Express can.
Safari can provided the page has been coded correctly. Many sites that add sounds use the <bgsound> tag which is only supported by Internet Explorer and not part of the HTML standard.

• Safari not playing FB message sound files.

In Safari 6.0.5 on Mountain lion, when in facebook, in messages, if someone sends me a sound file when I click it it just flashes but will not play. Other content such as posted video or youtube links in feed will play. If I go to Firefox browser, works fine.

Back to Safari > Preferences this time select the Extensions tab.
If there are any installed, turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension back on at a time, quit and relaunch Safari and test until you find the extension that's causing the conflict and uninstal.

• Why will Safari not play MP3s embedded in my iWeb pages when Firefox can?

One would have thought that if iWeb was going to get picky over the scenarios in which it would behave correctly, it would favour Apple-centric enviroments. But this doesn't appear to be the case when building an iWeb site with embedded MP3 files.
The published site behaves perfectly when viewed in Firefox and yes, even IE's latest incarnation. Files may take a while to download but they play when the download has finished. Safari is a different story. The MP3 files embedded in some pages simply will not play when viewed with Safari.
This page in particular has never worked in Safari -
http://www.whisperycat.co.uk/version_5/sounds/Entries/2011/3/23_Promenade.html
A small blue questionmark appears instead of the 'Play' button.
Any workarounds or is it just the case that Safari and iWeb are incompatible on this fundamental point???

Well it looks as though I answered my own question. A Google search revelas that Safari has had over 2 years' history of reported problems with the mp3 format -
http://www.google.co.uk/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=safari+wont+play+mp3&ie=UT F-8&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&ei=nkulT9_wA82g8gOPj8ntBA
- and the solution is... STOP USING MP3 FILES
Yes, mp3 format is out, mp4 format is in. SO I'll need to upload MP4 versions of my audio files and then retry.

• Safari not playing live audio when tapping the play pause key in IO5

Hi. I just upgraded Ipad 2 to IO5 and now when using Safari to play "listen live" audio from various websites the play/pause button only works one out of 15 taps; I have to tap the reload icon to get it to start and stop...any suggestions? Thanks, Steve

Tap Settings > Safari
Then tap Clear History then tap Clear Cookies and Data
Then restart the iPad.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

• Safari not playing videos on imac

You tube videos not playing after recent software update on Apple.

Apple has become more stringent, validating applications that run on your Mac. A few moths ago they basically "turned off' Java. The same may have happened to your Flash player. I agree with the previous post, go to Adobe and get the newest version and see if that helps.
Cheers

• Safari not playing Quicktime from new website, all other browsers can

Hi, I have a new web site being created. The developer has most of it done but has not been able to get the quicktime movies working correctly. The movies, animations, and panos, can be selected and play from Firefox on the MAC and PC, and IE on the PC.
Our problem is that these same movies do not show or play on Safari on the MAC. we just get a big "Q". The developer is a pc guy and has no way to get it working, he's tried it for months and everyday it's just a day away. Does anyone have some code or know what is going on and how to fix it. This is most frustrating. I would like to change developers but we are too far into the project to do that now. Thanks in advance for any information.

Hi Krag
I could not hear audio using Safari. However, the audio does work using Firefox.
Some sites are coded in such a way that they may not work on certain browsers. And each browser has a unique way of reading site content. So it's quite a mix. Your situation is a good example why it helps to have more than one browser for surfing the Internet.
Hope that helps.

• Video in Safari not playing -- one specific site only!

I'm having a frustrating time trying to troubleshoot a problem with video content in Safari 5.1 on one particular site -- www.cleveland.com. The problem also occurred in Safari 5.0, but it's a recent thing -- video content on the site worked fine until about three weeks ago. I cannot recall installing an extention or anythning like that, but there may have been a system upgrade in there somewhere (maybe from 10.6.7 to 10.6.8?).
What I get is a blank black box where the video should be playing. Video on all other sites works fine. The cleveland.com video uses a pop-up window for playing, and that window appears whether the built-in Safari pop-up blocker is on or off. The new window/player pops up, and there is content in that window, but the video box remains black.
I've searched discussions here and at Adobe, reinstalled the Flash player, uninstalled, reset permissions, reset the developer web agent, turned hardware accelleration on and off, etc. -- a ton of solutions have been presented to fix the black screen of Flash, but none of them have solved my problems with this site.
BTW, I get the exact same result in Firefox and Chrome. So it's something at the site or my system, right? I have asked the tech folks at the site, and they are not helpful. But they at least confirmed it is Flash content.
Does anyone see something I am missing, or have other solutions to try?
Thanks in advance,
Jonathan
Mac 10.6.8, Intel, Safari 5.1

I'm having this same problem. On mobile websites before 3.0 update in safari, you would click to watch a video and it would open video viewer and i could watch them fine.
Now you click on a video to watch and a bunch of random text starts showing on the screen, like it's trying to stream the video - but the ipod touch doesn't know what to do.

• Safari not playing local flash movie

Hello All,
Below is a piece of html code I am using to view an embeded flash movie. As you can see the file is located on my hard drive - this (the .swf file on the hard drive) is being used to simulate content that will eventually be placed on a CD. Also the code is an html page that is part of a Java program that uses "continue"servlets to advance to other pages.
I know the Flash plugin (8) works because I can view flash files from other sites and I can also view my file by navigating to it through Safari using file open.
The Problem is when I try get the flash movie to play by advancing from one web page to the one below that has the file embeded - Nothing happens.
Any Help is very appreciated. Thank you

Glad that resolved your problem.
Strange things tend to happen in Cyber world. I've seen, albeit infrequently, where my Safari Preferences were reset to default values while surfing. Haven't figured out why that happens, but I have my suspicions. Yet, because it's a rare event, it's not in the top 5 of things to do.

• Safari not playing video after iOS 6

Since iOs 6 upgrade none of our iPhones (4 & 4s) nor our two iPads will play the mpeg video from our ip webcams. Worked perfectly before, now safari just sits there with the little activity circle going round and round. The cameras can be accessed as before from a PC, so they are clearly ok.
iOs6 is a great disappointment, having screwed up several things that worked before (apart from the maps debacle!)

It takes several minutes and tries for me to even get a track playing. Screen locks then goes white and then locks for three minutes then I can change tracks. IOS 6.0 is an utter nightmare. Whoever was behind this at Apple needs to be fired for this utter fiasco!!! Steve would have had this happen!
