Safari not rendering Arabic text correctly

I have Safari 1.0.3 running on Mac OS 10.2.8 and it will not render Arabic text correctly. Isolated letters appear at about half the correct size, which makes pages readable but only with considerable difficulty and annoyance.
I saw some solutions here that related to removing Microsoft fonts, but I removed all fonts from Home:Library:Fonts and quite and restarted Safari, and the problem persists. I also downloaded Firefox 2.0 and the same issue occurs - with the added feature that the tab titles on Firefox also display this anomaly, whereas tab titles on Safari render Arabic correctly.
And by the way, if this issue can be resolved, can safari and other apps be got to use a font other than the extremely ugly and hard-to-read default?
iMac Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Thanks Tom. The problem though is not that letters
that are meant to be connected are coming out
isolated; letters that are meant to be isolated, e.g.
initial alif, waw, ra and final letters after alif,
waw ra, are displaying way too small.
Sorry I misunderstood the problem.
Do you think it is worth trying your troubleshooting
tip no. 18? And do you have any idea what sort of
issue could be behind it that it would affect Firefox
too?
Yes, you may as well try no. 18. That tip, which really has no logic to it, reflects the fact that voodoo is sometimes required to get Jaguar to display Arabic correctly in browsers. Panther was a tremendous improvement in that regard.

• Safari not rendering a page correctly

A webpage I created in Dreamweaver uses drop down menus that are supposed to display just to the left of the link they drop from. In all other browsers they work correctly, but since the latest upgrade in Safari to 3.0.4 as a part of OS 10.4.11 on my Macbook, they are not rendering correctly. Instead they are appearing much further to the left where it's difficult to move the cursor to them before they disappear. Until I changed the color of the drop downs they were disappearing into the background. Any ideas why Safari is not rendering them correctly? I'd like to keep Safari as my primary browser, but if it won't render my own page correctly, what other pages might it be messing up? Address of the page is http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/woottonhs/ The drop downs are connected to the central column list that has small arrows beside the words. They will probably work correctly for you, but won't for me in Safari. What can I do to fix it?
Thanks,
KWolfrey

Hi,
I'm running 10.4.11 with Safari 3.0.4 and as far as I can see the menus seem to work just fine here.
Do you have a custom stylesheet set in Safaris advanced preferences? (Some Safari enhancer applications set one even if you didn't manually set one so double check to make sure.)
Also, do you use PithHelmet?
One quick test you can do to help narrow down things is to try Safari in another user account. This will help us to know whether your problem is local to your account or system wide. If you don't have another account you can use System Preferences -> Accounts -> \[+\] to create a test one (and \[-\] to remove it if needed)
Lastly, I doubt these [errors|http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.montgomeryschoolsmd. org%2Fschools%2Fwoottonhs%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&g roup=0] have anything to do with your problem since it seems to work fine for me, but you might want to look into them at some point.

• Safari not reading Arabic website correctly

Dear Experts,
Is there a way to add fonts to Safari? Cause when i open some arabic websites i am not able to see the website font displayed correctly. I am using ITouch with the latest update. Your feedback is highly appreciated.
Regards.

Unfortunately, character encoding errors are a significant problem in both Safari and Mail. Apple needs to add a function for users to be able to specify the encoding for a web page or mail message. When Safari or Mail guesses wrong, there is no way for the user to manually select the correct character encoding.

• Safari not displaying web text correctly...

Under my admin account, in Safari, lots of sites displays text inaccurately, namely each letter presents as a capital A in a square box, while what I assume is background/template where text is in effect graphic displays fine...

It looks like you have a problems with the LucidaGrande font.
Here's a Quote from Kurt Lang on this subject:
+A’s with boxes around them is always a sign of trouble with the main system+
+font, Lucida Grande.+
+Quick possible fix is to remove ALL font cache files from the system to see+
+if it's just bad cache data. For that, you need to use OnyX or other utility+
+which will remove both system and user cache files. A Safe Mode boot won't+
+work since it only removes cache data from the user account you do a safe+

+If after that the problem returns, then Lucida Grande itself is damaged and+

• Safari not rendering Correctly

Hi-
Randomly, Safari stopped rendering sties correctly, actually, one site in particular. Gizmodo (www.gizmodo.com) only comes up as a sort of list instead of the correct full version. I've already reset Safari, clear cookies, history, temp files, etc. I also deleted the preference file, but to no avail. I'll attach a screenshot of this incorrect rendering to show you what I mean.
Thanks!!

That would be weird because this only started happening about last week. I'll download the latest webkit and see if that helps any. My ISP is Verizon (FiOS). I am using the built in ethernet connection.

• Safari not displaying Arabic font

In Firefox I am able to change the Fonts and Colors (Preferences>Content>Fonts and Colors) so Firefox will use an Arabic font (e.g. Geeza Pro) that works on pages with mixed English and Arabic text. I can't find how to do this in Safari. Right now it's displaying a default simple font. I've tried deleting duplicate MS Office fonts but that didn't work.

Could you send me a screenshot of what you are seeing (tom at bluesky dot org) and also provide the url? Normally Safari should always use Geeza Pro. Perhaps I can identify what is interfering.

• Why is Safari not displaying some pages correctly?

Safari seems to be messing up again. Had this problem quite a while ago. It's not displaying some pages correctly.
Notice the 2 enclosed screen shots. I went to purchase something (no personal info in the jpgs)
Notice the W-Safari. Little trash cans by the purchase items missing as well as the submit button and a few other things. So I opened Chrome.
Notice in the W-Chrome, everything is displaying correctly.
I've had problems like this some time ago but I thought they were fixed.
Thanks for any suggestions or help.

• Firefox is not rendering/displaying websites correctly.

Started today, never had problems with any site I visited until now. Every webpage I vist will not load/render/display correctly. I have not done anything to firefox in ages and have had no problem like this before.

If you use extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extension) like Adblock Plus or NoScript or Flash Block that can block content then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.
* "Clear the Cache": Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
* "Remove the Cookies" from sites that cause problems: Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

• Safari not rendering CSS and javascript correctly

There seems to be a bug in Safari when dealing with CSS display property and javascript.
I've created a form that hides certain fields when the right circumstances are met, those fields become visible. However, when they become visible, through the use of javascript, they don't display in the flow of the document. For example:
[field 1]
[field 2]
[field 3]
Assume that [field 2] is hidden on initial page load. And when [field 1] is clicked, then [field 2] should appear and it should appear after [field 1]. Safari, however, displays [field 2] above [field 1] and strips it of any styles. I spent 2 hours trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, but it turns out I wasn't doing anything wrong. It's Safari that can't render this correctly because when I test it in Firefox it works fine. Just as I expected it to. I hope this gets fixed in the next update.
If anyone has any explanation or solutions or reasons for this peculiar anomaly please tell me.

If you have not done so already, make sure you also tell Apple by using the Bug Reporting item in the Safari menu.

• Not Rendering Some Pages Correctly

My site has been working correctly for several years. Yesterday, when trying to update only a couple of the pages, iWeb made me republish the whole site. I did it overnight by publishing to a folder, then using Cyberduck to upload the folder.
Now my Welcome page looks normal but some of the other pages do not render correctly. Appears to be related to the photo template pages (click on the "Bills Photos" link on the Welcome page to see the problem).
When I publish to a folder and open with Safari all pages render normally. When I compare the html on the PhotoGallery page in the folder with the one on my iDisk, they appear to be the same.
I've been changing things and retrying with no success. Can anyone tell me what's going on and how to fix it.
My URL is: http://web.mac.com/billspaulding/BillsHome/Welcome.html
Thanks for any help.
Bill

Bill-
First of all I am noticing that you are using non-web safe fonts (futura comes up in safari and something serif, maybe a Garamond? in firefox). So that could be one reason why your type is off...
I can see the type redrawing as the page renders. I have also found that when you adjust with the type character spacing settings in iweb it renders differently on different browsers. Also be careful of overlapping text boxes. That can mess up your type as well.
As far as the gallery photo pages... just a guess... but your site is very narrow. Did you make sure all files (including the gallery pages) fall within the page width you have set up? I noticed when I click 'back to album' the page corrects itself to view the slideshow but you lose the other options to download, etc. Weird but it almost looks like you have 2 copies of the gallery on each page.. with 2 buttons for each (play slideshow)
Have you checked all your links?
Hope some of this helps. I have been working with iweb recently, teaching myself and viewing forums.

• Safari not rendering Verdana

I cleaned up my fonts today when Font Book flagged several fonts were duplicates or had other problems. I removed the fonts as suggested by FB and there were no immediate problems anywhere, not even Safari.
This morning, without having logged out or restarted Safari, it is rendering what appears to be Verdana with all characters as Cap A in a box.
I checked in Firefox if those pages rendered correctly, which they did, using Helvetica. So that indicates the standard CSS selection of fonts is being applied.
If I copy the wrongly rendered fonts from Safari and paste them into TextEdit they appear as normal text, no errors.
If I go into Appearance in Safari's preferences and choose +Standard font: Verdana+ it is substituted by odd ball Unicode boxed glyphs like TM or square root in the font field.
I tried switching to Lucida Grande or Lucida Sans but the font rendering problem remains. So it looks like the Verdana it is attempting to render is somehow misapplying Unicode characters.
Safari's Default Encoding is Western (ISO Latin 1). Switching to Unicode (UTF-8) is not fixing the problem either.
I can see no way of reinstating the fonts that were disabled.
This really has me scratching my head.
Any ideas?
Peter

Kurt Lang has been an Apple Discussions helper for years. He wrote the link that "baltwo" posted also.

• Safari not displaying web pages correctly

I dont know if its my inexperieince, something to do with settings or what but I am finding some of the web pages I am receiveing are not displaying correctly. For example a card company sent me an online form to complete but when I tried to read it some of the information was displayed on top of more information making the whole thing garbled and indeciperable, on another website there was an area with a list of information held in a box but when I tried to read the information it would periodically jump about yet I was no where near the mouse. Both pages are fine on my husbands windows PC. There have been other incidents like this making the transition from windows to Mac very painful. Is this something that can be remedied or are we stuck with it?

When I experience the problem, I sometimes have to zoom in or out, to get the text to be readable.

PC or Mac? When I preview my sites with PC Safari 3.0.3 Beta
all the fonts are way too heavy, seems that its got rendering
problems, but since its a Beta I don't worry about these things
until its a full release.
Your website looks fine on Firefox 2.0.0.6 on my XP Pro SP2.
IE7 and IE6 look ok, apart from the linked image borders are now

• Firefox not rendering italic text

I can't pinpoint specifically when this began, but this is an issue I've only seen after doing a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04. Firefox isn't rendering text that appears between <i> and <cite> tags (there may be others that would render as italicized text by default, but I haven't checked), but is correctly rendering text between <em> tags. The text is literally just gone but is taking up space in the layout.
Chrome on the same machine isn't having the same problem

It seem that in the latest versions of (k)ubuntu only ttf-dejavu-core is installed by default. If you install ttf-dejavu-extra [ sudo apt-get install ttf-dejavu-extra ] that fixes the problem for me
