Safari Not Staying Default Browser
No matter how many times I reset my default browser back to Safari, it always changes back to Firefox. This happens if Firefox is opened, or if I restart my computer. Either way, it's very annoying and highly inconvinent.
I read some guy back in 2008 had this problem, and it just randomly got fixed. Any ideas, anyone?
Thanks,
Mark
Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

Every time I open Firefox 4.0.1 it asks would you like FF to be your default browser. How do i make this stay default?
Hi Tylerdowner -
Thanks for your suggestion.
I already tried a Reset, but all that did was lose all my settings , search engines etc. and one or two add-ons - as expected.
I also already tried updating my graphics driver - both manually, and with Windows Update (Automatic Updates is set to ON anyway, and I've checked the optional ones as well, and though there was nothing relevant there, I installed most of them anyway!) Apparently I'm using the most up-to-date and appropriate driver already!
Oh dear........
Going to try turning off hardware acceleration next.... -
Adobe Reader X standalone client does not recognize default browser.
Adobe Reader works fine if I'm on a webpage and open a PDF. It opens in the browser as it should.
I have PDF files on my hard drive. I can start up Adobe Reader from the desktop and read them, but if I click a link inside the PDF, it opens in Internet Explorer which is not my default browser. I use Firefox as my browser.
Reader 9.4 works great but this new one doesn't cut it and Adobe doesn't provide any support for it that I can find.
I am using Firefox 3.6.18 on Windows Vista. I have reset my default browser several different ways now. I've made IE the default and then Firefox again. I've gone into Firefox options and told it to Check to be sure it is default. I've gone into default programs and re-chosen Firefox. Nothing has worked.
I have 2 questions:
1) Does anybody know how to actually contact Adobe about Reader?
2) Does anybody know a setting for Reader anywhere that I can tweak to fix this? I'm not afraid of the registry but I'm not going to experiment in it either.I was able to resolve this by disabling Protected Mode at startup.
Go to Edit > Preferences > select General tab > uncheck "Enable Protected Mode at startup" > restart Reader.
I do not consider this a fix since I have now disabled some of the security given to us with the upgrade. This is merely a work-around.
I submitted a bug report to Adobe. Who knows if they'll respond to it. -
I want to set up Safari as my default browser
I want to set up Safari as me default browser. I also have firefox and somehow firefox is the default browser. It seems that I cannot print things out from firefox?
Try this. In Safari, go to Preferences (in the "Safari" menu). Go to the "General" pane and look at the top for "Default web browser". Use this pull-down menu to set the default ot Safari.
Hope that helps! -
When internet icons on the desktop are right clicked and Firefox is not the default browser, is there anyway to create an "Open with Firefox" option in the right click menu? If not you should create one in future versions.
You will have to create a copy of the Firefox desktop shortcut and add the URL to the target line if you want to open such an internet shortcut with Firefox.
A normal internet shortcut will always open in the default browser. -
How do I make Firefox NOT my default browser and restore Internet Explorer as default browser?
I used to have Internet Explorer as my default browser and when I went to Firefox it asked me if I wanted Firefox as my default browser and I always sad no. I must haves screwed that up somehow and I want to go back to Explorer as default.
== This happened ==
Not sure how oftenTo make Internet Explorer your default web browser, you can click on '''Tools''' from the toolbar at the top and select '''Internet Options'''. Then select the '''Programs''' tab from the top of the window to access the default browser settings. You might want to also choose to be alerted if Internet Explorer is not your default browser. Click '''OK''' to save your changes.
Please also be aware of that Firefox's latest version is [http://getfirefox.com 3.6.4] while you're running 3.5.9. -
Why does Firefox tell me it's not the default browser?
When I start Firefox, or when I go to the options system and check, Firefox 8 tells me it's not the default browser. Yet, if I close it, and go to some program such as Excel and type in a URL then click it, Firefox opens it. Any idea what's wrong?
That means that not all Firefox settings as default browser are set and that some are missing

Mozilla and IE7 were working fine but since upgrading IE7 will not remain the default browser. Everytime I launch IE7 it states it is not the default browser. How do I resolve this issue.
Do you have IE as the default, and then, when you open Firefox, do you have it set to check if it is the default?
To check it, Inside Firefox, click on Tools, then Options. Go to Advanced. Look at the Default Browser option in there. Make sure the Checkbox to always check if Firefox is the default is unchecked if you don't want to use Firefox as your default (If you want it as default, leave it checked).
Then, you can op[en up IE, and make it your default. -
After installing the safari update for windows, outlook is now not opening email hyperlinks. I have set safari to be my default browser but outlook won't open it when I click a link. I get the following message: "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." Please help.
Hi mcclausky, you may need to manually remove a policy setting from the registry. You also should scan for malware that might have created this problem.
This article lists scanning and cleaning tools other Firefox users have found helpful: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
To check your Windows registry for policy settings that might affect Firefox or other programs, I suggest consulting a Windows forum or Microsoft's forums. For example:

Bex Query Designer not using default browser
hello all, i have disabled my Internet Explorer from being my default browser, however, when i use the Bex query designer and test, it initiates my Internet Explorer, and not my default Safari browser.
does anyone know where this setting is made ?
thanks
gSkype uses IE ("Internet Explorer") as the browser interface on Windows based systems, this currently includes many windows such as the logon screen and add Contacts screen. This is fairly normal when a program uses browser logic internally, it is not changing what you use as a default browser.

Make firefox handle URLs from other applications, when not the default browser
I know there is a preference for this SOME WHERE because I saw it. Now I want to change it.
I want to toggle whether clicking on a URL in some other app (like my email) will be handled by the Macintosh Default Browser (Safari) or by FirefoxOnly the default browser can handle links automatically.<br />
That is handled by the OS and can't be affected otherwise.
If you do not want to change to default browser to Firefox then you need to drag the link in a Firefox window or otherwise open the link in the preferred browser. -
On 03/13/2011, I could not use an interactive photo gallery in the New York Times website. I had a slide on each picture which showed the before and after the tsunami damage, in Japan.
I had to use Google Chrome, though Firefox is my default browser.
I had the same problem with the photo gallery of dresses during and after the Oscar event. That site relies upon JavaScript to use the before and after feature. Make sure JavaScript is enabled, to do that open the Options window, go to the Content panel and make sure "Enable JavaScript" is selected.
If you have an add-on such as NoScript that blocks JavaScript, you need to set it to allow scripts to run on that site. -
Can't set Safari as true default browser in windows xp
I'm running WindowsXP, and I installed the latest version of Safari. No matter what I do, it won't become the true default browser. I tried using the Safari preferences approach which only has one effect - it changes the icon at the top of the start button task bar to Safari. However, all my links from the desktop, from start...run <type url>, and from MS Outlook all lauch IE. I've also tried changing all the settings in the start...set program access and defaults and nothing will make Safari my default browser.
I don't have access to "Set Programs and Defaults" on my machine. Safari's ability to set itself as web browser, at least on Windows XP, seems to be broken. But I found a workaround. Install Firefox, let it set itself as default browser. Your hyperlinks and such should open in Firefox. Uninstall Firefox. Open up Safari, go to preferences and make sure Safari is set as default browser. Then, at least for me, the hyperlinks started opening in Safari. If you go into Safari and set Internet Explorer as default, you'll probably hose the setup and have to do it again.

Skype not using default browser
I recently uninstalled Skype to revert to an older version to get rid of the horrible "Skype Home" splash screen. While I found "Skype Home" useless and irritating, it was nothing compared to what I found out when I finished uninstalling.
These days it's quite common that when you're uninstalling a program, a browser window is launched to take you to the program's website, usually to show you some generic "we're sorry to see you leave" message. That's fair enough. However, most programs have the common courtesy to respect the user's default program settings and personal preferences and launch his default browser. This doesn't seem to be the case with Skype, for after uninstalling Skype I was shocked to see an Internet Explorer window opening.
Really, owned by Microsoft or no, there can be no excuse for such an insult to your customers, not to mention compromising their privacy and security by force-launching the unsafest and most disliked browser out there.
I am expecting a formal apology.Skype uses IE ("Internet Explorer") as the browser interface on Windows based systems, this currently includes many windows such as the logon screen and add Contacts screen. This is fairly normal when a program uses browser logic internally, it is not changing what you use as a default browser.
