Safari on iPad freezes from time to time... Any hints?

We got three iPads at home, excellent machines. I use mine for work and also, sometimes, for browsing.
My wife is extremely happy with hers and doesn't want to use her pc anymore (no wonder): she uses internet to browse, read her newsgroups, upload and download info, copy photos, etc.
But hers sometimes freezes. The URL field starts reading but stops and no progress can be made.
What is the best way to procpeed?
I also hope Apple has a fix for that bug in a coming update.
Thanks

Bugs, by definition, affect everybody, all the time. I'm just not seeing 10 million plus users all complaining about this and, believe me, they would be.
The progress bar can freeze up for any number of different reasons, with who perhaps to blame stretched out all the way from your iPad to your network to your ISP to the net itself to the server that you're connecting to.
As for best way to proceed, boilerplate follows:
A more or less standard sequence of steps is laid out in your User's Guide which you should follow in those cases when either your iPad or an app isn't behaving as it should. They sort of mirror 'The Three R's (Restart, Reset, & Restore) that you use for iPod troubleshooting, with a few extra iPad-specific things added in to the list.
Others here may just print out various parts of that list in their responses. I prefer instead to direct you to p. 170 of your Guide, in the Tips & Troubleshooting section. The directions there will start you out from the quickest and easiest first step, which will often be all you need to do, all the way to your atomic blast fix of totally restoring the iOS and all contents in your iPad.
You can call AppleCare, and they will probably have you do the same things. Or, you can take it I to a Genius Bar, and they will also go through the same steps. Needless to say, if you work through the whole process without being able to correct your problem, then you've pretty much shot your bolt and will have to start talking to Apple or the app developers for a resolution.

  • My new Macbook Air keeps freezing from time to time.

I have a 2 month old 256GB Macbook Air. I still have 140GB free. Yet, my screen freezes from time to time. I don't know what the problem is. Is it with the software or hardware? How do I correct it?

I'm assuming you are running Mavericks. Older versions of OS X have a slightly different interface.
    Open Activity Monitor in Applications/Utilities.
    Select Memory tab.
Monitor your memory pressure (bottom middle window) when you are having problems.
    Green is good
Amber or yellow means that memory resources are getting low.
Red means you’re almost out of memory or it’s completely full.
See this link for more info: http://www.switchingtomac.com/tutorials/osx/understanding-memory-pressure-in-os- x-mavericks/
If your memory is all green then check CPU.
Sort on the CPU tab at the top. This will show you what app is using the most CPU.
You might find you need to quit other apps while watching videos.

  • MacBook freezes from time to time

    Hi there,
I just got a second MacBook (White 1.8GHz) which seems to have some problems. It freezes from time to time, almost impossible to say when exactly it happens. But when it does it freezes completely, no moving cursor, nothing. The only way to shut it down is to hold the power button for a few seconds. When you power it up again, sometimes a screen shows up saying: "Please restart your computer by holding down the power button".
I already replaced the old RAM with new one, it's still happening. I also checked the new RAM using 'memtest', it's fine.
    Please help!
    Thanks in advance!
    greetings

It could be the hard drive, it could be other damage from the drop, and it could be the cable. I know that doesn't help much, but the only way to figure out which is to isolate things. The hard drive is probably most suspect if you're sure that's what's making noise and not the fans. An SSD is a fabulous upgrade, but it may not fix your problem. If you have access to a different hard drive, pretty much any capacity, you could pop that in and see if the problem resolves. If not, it'd down to the cable or some other damage. An SSD will definitely point out a marginal cable, that question comes up often here. Since an SSD is more demanding, it often fails with a borderline cable installed.
If it's some other damage from the drop, that's tougher to diagnose. But my guess is it's not. I hope that's of some help.

  • IPad Air 2 freezes from time to time

I had an iPad Air (1) for a year or so .... it never froze up. I moved to a new iPad Air 2 when it came out. It freezes up from time to time. Maybe a couple times a day, then I might go day or so when it doesn't freeze, and then it will do it again. The screen just freezes. I have to reboot it each time it does this. And there's no discernible pattern to what might be triggering it. It can happen in any app, or when I tap on any app.
I know I can try doing a restore (I'd rather not... I really hate doing that... takes forever). I'll do a restore if this becomes a real problem. It's interesting that for the year I owned the iPad Air (1), it NEVER froze -- it was rock solid. In the couple weeks I've had the iPad Air 2, it's freezed up on me probably about 10 times. I'm hoping that perhaps an update will address this (unless, of course, I have a lemon).
I'm wondering if any one else has encountered this.  Thanks....

Same issue here. Have had it since Oct 24th and its happened about 4 or 5 times. No pattern or sequence of events just completely freezes. Only fix is to reboot using Home button and power switch. Hopefully the freeze is captured in the logs and sent to Apple (if you've allowed this in the settings) and Apple are aware of the issue. I've seen a few posts on various forums with similar problem and even a Youtube video showing the exact same problem.
I hope it can be fixed with a software update !

  • Retrieve ipad files from time machine

I have a number of files on my ipad that are stored in time machine.
Is there any way to access and retrieve these without totally rebuilding my ipad?

It depends on which files.  If they are files that can be transferred to the iPad by connecting to iTunes then you can copy the files from Time Machine to your iTunes file sharing then transfer the files to your iPad:

  • U160 Freezes from time to time

    Hi,
I just got my new U160 (German version), and the notebook freezes up once in a while.
The drivers are the current ones.
I also notice some weird pixel artefacts on the screen from time to time, when the notebook reactivates the screen after it went dark for saving enery.
Is there a BIOS update resolving this?
    Thanks,
    Klaus
    - Microsoft MVP -

    Hey yigit,
I have exactly the same issues with my U160 as "loeffel" mentioned them in his query.
My U160 often freezes when I close the lid and the laptop should turn into sleep mode. In case it freezes in this example, it means that the laptop doesn't turn into sleep mode and the screen doesn't turn on if I open the lid again.
Another example of freezing happens normally if I don't use the laptop for a while (it is just running with activated screen) and I use the touchpad then again or press any key. Then the laptop doesn't respond at all, though the screen is still showing windows.
When it comes to the pixel artefacts - this happens on a regular base if the screen deactivates itself after some time or simply after wake up from the sleep mode. It looks like this that I have four to five bars from the top to the bottom of a size of 4 cm which just show weird pixels and stripes, very similar to what you can see when a graphic card is broken but still a bit working. This artefacts disapear if refresh the screen with opening a new program window or something similar. The artefacts still remain in areas where no refresh happens, like the status bar on the right bottom.
Is Lenovo aware of this issue?
My U160 is also a German version, produced in August 2010 and purchased just two months ago. I can send you more details if you need them.
    Thanks in advance

  • Safari fails after Restore from Time Machine

After I restored from a TIme Machine backup on an external hard disk, Safari would not connect to the internet.  How do I repair Safari to connect?  I am not having any problem connecting Mail or FireFox to the internet.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
There are a few possibilities. You've posted in the Leopard Time Machine forum, but your signature says you're running Snow Leopard. If you used a Leopard Install disc to restore a +*Snow Leopard+* backup, that's the problem. Try again with a Snow Leopard Install disc (you can use either disc to restore a Leopard backup).
If not, why did you restore? If you were having, say, internal HD troubles, it's possible that they corrupted your installation of OSX, those changes were backed-up by Time Machine, and restored. If that's a possibility, try the restore from an earlier backup.
If nothing seems to work, do an +*Erase and Install+* of Leopard, if that's what you're running; or start up from your SL Install disc, select +Disk Utility+ from the +Utilities Menu,+ erase your internal HD, quit Disk Utility and install OSX.
When your Mac restarts with only a fresh copy of OSX, +Setup Assistant+ will ask if you want to transfer your data from another Mac or Time Machine backups. Do so -- see #19 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for details.

  • Intellimouse Optical momentarily freezes from time to time

My Microsoft Intellimouse freezes for brief moments from time to time. Sometimes it totally freezes and I have to reconnect to make it operable. I have repaired permissions and ran MacJanitor. It is usually less of a problem after this, but gets worse in time. Any suggestions as to a permanent solution.
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   G4

    bossless,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Do you use any drive software for the Intellimouse or do you use it as a generic three-button mouse? Support for three-button mice is built into OS X --- your mouse should work out-of-the-box without additional software.
The most common reason for an optical mouse to momentarily freeze, or to appear to jump from one spot to another, is actually refelction problems with the mousing surface. The mousing surface needs to be reflective, but not too reflective. Also, crud can build up underneath a mpouse; try cleaning the bottom of the mouse, especially the LED opening. Also try using a sheet of heavyweight bond paper as a mouse pad and see if the mouse behavior improves. I've had good behavior for some time now using floor tiles as mouse pads (following up on a suggestion from Ron Jackle); a dull matte finish tile works well. A bright while tile is too reflective, but a tan 8x10 floor tile, tagged 8x10-5202 at Home Depot, costs about US$0.89 and will last effectively forever.
The second leading cuase of jumpy mouse behavior is internal wire fraying in the mouse cord, especially where the cord enters the mouse body. If possible, try your mouse on a different computer; if the freezing continues, you know it's time to replace the mouse.
A final thing to check: do you often have many CPU-intensive tasks running at the same time? You may simply be overloading the computer. I use MenuMeters for real-time monitoring of the CPU load. You can also use Activity Monitor or the like. If you notice the mouse freezing correlates to CPU usage closing in on 100%, you'll at least know why.

  • IPad freezing multiple times a day

Any one else have the problem? Freezes in any app at a random time.  Usually I will have to power off and on but sometimes it acts like its restarting shows the lock screen and jumps back to the apple with the spinning loading circle.
But now that I just updated to ios 5 it will just freeze or restart or shut off on its own
    Is this just defective?

Have you tried closing all your apps completely ? From the home screen (i.e. not with any app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of each app to close them, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Safari on iPad freezes

I have a 1st generation iPad. This week, Safari started freezing when I opened more than one webpage. I've read other discussions suggesting clear the caches and/or reboot.
Reboot -- is that the only solution? Why has this suddenly started to occur? My iPad was problem free until this week. I am bewildered.

    cmw951 wrote:
I wonder -- how many apps are too many apps -- for iPad 1st generation?
I have no clue! I am an iPad 1 user as well. I only have about 65 apps on my iPad right now. I use mine mainly for surfing the web, email, reading news, sports (especially) TV apps ... not much productivity stuff - although I do use Pages for some very light document creation.
I'm not saying that the game app will be your solution but any number of apps that rely on the internet may be causing a problem as well. It's just something else to consider. The best way to know is experiment. You can always download any purchased app again for free, it's the data that you may be "kissing goodbye".
Side note about deleting apps  .... I removed my Pages app just the other day (for experimental purposes) and reinstalled it and all of my documents were gone. BUT - I had just backed up the iPad prior to deleting Pages so then I restored from that backup and all of my documents were back in place just like they were before I deleted the app.

  • Help, everytime I go on safari my screen freeze's on me. Any ideas on how to fix this problem!

I have had know issue's until yesterday. I can check my mail and do everything except for when i go on safari the last page i looked at still comes up and it will not allow to do anything. i WOULD BE SO GRATEFUL FOR ANY IDEA ON HOW TO UNFREEZE IT!  JOY

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Why does a gray screen come over my iPad then the iPad freezes?

When using my iPad a gray screen comes over the screen & the iPad freezes.

First time i heard of this. Is it the same screen that you need to slide to open? Have you tapped it like you need to do when it's going to sleep? Try a reset. Next i'd be heading to the Apple Store.  Good luck. Please report back  with the cure.

this is somethinng like the third post i have read about that update causing troubles...
But if I read this right- it is still in the install? Had you restarted and repaired permissions BEFORE the download? As well as emptying cache in safari first?
The other troubles I read had to do with after install, and caused by...oh what was it...it was early morning...an article at CNET news had it...google 10.7.4 update trouble and read the cnet one.
