Safari on Windows has huge memory footprint

Running Gmail app:
Safari - 85,304K
IE7 - 33,884K
Firefox - 28,572K
I know it's a beta, but I've noticed that Firefox seems to be the best still. It's the smallest memory footprint, it's as fast (that I can humanly tell) as Safari, and the most standards compliant.
There are still some web pages that use heavy AJAX controls and other JavaScript stuff that Safari doesn't do well with. Hopefully they'll get ironed out in the beta and the memory footprint under better control.

Hmmm... Firefox conservative with memory? Thats a good joke!
The other day, I was surfing the web, and doing little else, when I noticed a marked slowdown in performance (ihave an e67000, and 2gb of ram), so I was annoyed that my system could be faultring just from using Firefox alone.
One look at task manager made my jaw hit the floor! That crafty fox had hogged almost1.35gb of ram!!!! with the optional extras I load up at start, I was left with 34mb to play with! Now thats a ridiculous memory footprint!
Alas this problem has been around since the stone age, the dev guys at Mozilla seem unwilling or incapable of sorting the problem out.

  • Safari extensions window has gone blank

    Hey everyone!
My safari extensions window has gone blank. I have a MacBook Pro running 10.7.4, and I recently downloaded some extensions from the Apple Site.
I've trashed the Library/Safari/Extensions plist folder and re-booted but this has not helped. I can install them but not manage them through the preferences > extensions window. Any advice appreciated.

Have you done disk repair ? Oopen disk utility select the HD then (after turning off all other programs) run Verify Disk, then repair permissions.
I was told when I got my first computer that before installing new, and after installing new software, repair disk permnissions.
    I hope that helps.
You might want to pull stuff out of the trash...

  • Firefox 4.0 RC has huge memory leak + slow down problem

Firefox 4.0 RC Seems to have a huge memory leak issue. After leaving the program open for around half an hour the RAM usage climbs to over 1 gb.
However, I have 12 gb of physical ram, so firefox staking 1 gb for itself is not too big of a problem (and is probably a blessing as it means it's caching more data), but the problem is that the UI begins to slow down and become clunky after about 30 minutes.
Browsing, switching tabs, even typing becomes jittery and not very responsive.
This happens regardless of how many tabs I have open.
Now it's also crashing every once in a while.

Even with Firefox 4.0 (Release) running in Safe Mode, with all add-ons and themes disabled, I'm still inclined to think there's something screwy going on here.
I was watching Page Faults/sec, Page File Bytes and Working Set in Performance Monitor and tailing the Privoxy log for requests. Even with Firefox minimized and "doing nothing" (making no requests, anyway), over the space of a 10 minute period the Working Set grew from 244,375,552 bytes to 274,939,004 bytes (averaging 50,939 bytes/second). This behaviour doesn't seem consistent though - sometimes it doesn't seem to grow at all.
Additionally the Page Faults/Sec went nuts, accompanied by a step in Page File Bytes and Working Set, whenever a request got made to http://safebrowsing.clients.google.com/safebrowsing/downloads which seems to happens on a regular basis (approximately every 30 minutes).

  • Firefox 26 on OS X 10.9.1 still has huge memory usuage (leak) which leads to crash

Hi, The subject is sort of self explanatory but for the last few months (not sure exactly when) i have had regular Firefox crashes, it seems to happen when i'm out of memory and FF has used all the available RAM.
I have a MBP with i7 and 8gig of RAM using the latest OSX 10.9.1 and latest FF 26. I always keep up to date with the software.
Usually i have about 20 or so tabs open and go back and forth between these. I have googled and read allot on this topic and most people recommend starting in safe mode, without add-ons , creating clean profile etc and i have done these but slowly i get back into the same issue even after a clean profile....
It seems for every FF update the memory usage increases....back in the day FF was extremely fast and efficient. Or maybe latest FF just wants to remember so much and save just to much old information which leads to these ridiculous amount of memory usage, i tend to go over 3-4gig RAM after half a day alone before it crashes and all my tabs are lost which is extremely frustrating. Is there a way to limit the memory usage?
Only helpful tips i have found so far that seems to remove allot of garbage from the cache and the footprint is going to about:memory and run the "minimize memory usage", this has been working great and so far after 2-3 hours its steady on 900meg (more or less) with 16 tabs open.
Isnt this something FF needs to do regularly to get rid of old stuff ? i saw youtube and many other old stuff in the cache which i was not using and caused FF to go over 2 gig or so before i run this so why isnt this automated? as a user i shouldnt need to care about such thins really. I also used Safari for a few weeks with same amount of tabs and it never goes over 800-900 meg.
I really hope you guys can explain and give me some tips as to how to limit the memory usage of FF and not the regular make a clean profile and generic tips. I really think the problem is FF and nothing else. I done extensive testing here and i'm using just a few add-ons
    Adblock plus
    All in one Gestures
    Swedish dictioanary
    Downloadhelper
    Screengrab
    Download Statusbar
Sorry if i sound irritated but having to lose my tabs daily and being forced to bookmark my tabs constantly just in case FF crashes has been bugging me for a while now and i'm on the verge to switch browser but frankly there is no other browser as good as FF (offering same amount of plugins/add-ons) so i badly want to use FF if possible.
If you need any more info let me know.
    Cheers

I note that FlashPlayer 12 is now out. When you start testing I guess it would be best to test with that now.

  • Safari on Windows could not accept self-signed certificate

Hi, i am using Safari 5.0.4 on Windows 7 and I am trying to access an https site with a self-signed certificate (internal developing site).
after i install the certificate to the Windows certificate store (i try both Personal store and Trusted Root Certification), when i try to browse the site, Safari asks me to choose a certificate, after i choose it, after a long hang time, Safari displays "Safari can't open the page".
    My questions are:
    1. Any one has configured safari on windows to accept self-signed certificate successfully?
    2. i see some other posts saying "Safari on Windows has bug to use the self-signed certificate", any official document or link saying this if this is true?

That was from tossing the /internet explorer import self-signed certificate/ query at Google, and some poking around.  StackOverflow and Microsoft Technet and the Microsoft KBs have more details on Microsoft platforms and products and permutations, too.
The usual best fix with this stuff is to create your own certificate authority (CA) root certificate and to configure that within your chosen platforms and browsers, but I do not know (off-hand) how to do that on Microsoft Windows boxes.  Google or some KB probably has details of loading your own root cert.  This approach means loading one cert, and the rest of what you create that's signed from that cert will now automatically be trusted.  Basically you become your own CA provider, load your root cert into each of your clients, and then issue your own certs chained from your own root cert, and Bob's Your Uncle.

  • Trying to install Safari on windows 8.1

I can't download Safari on a windows 8.1 Toshia laptop. I've used chrome and explorer 11 and both start and then stop after about 5% of the download.
I'm not sure if this is related but when running apple update it tells me that there is a new version of icloud to download. same problem but I get an error message about the signature being unidentified or something like that. I've tried to disable the Norton firewall with no luck.  Any ideas?

You're wasting your time.  Safari for Windows has not been updated in many years, and never will be.

  • Memory footprint is HUGE

I just wanted to see if anyone else has a concern with the memory footprint and when/if this will be addressed. We have an ADF web app and now when we try to run under jdeveloper 11G the combination of jdeveloper and the weblogic java process is over 900M and grows when you do any clicking around. Under the previous TP4 release this was less than half.
I have windows XP with Firefox, OracleXE, jdeveloper/weblogic and the memory footprint is at 2G. We already had to upgrade our systems, do we need to upgrade yet again???

It seems that the commandline for starting the embedded weblogic has two instances of the -Xmx and Xms parameters. I think the last one is the one that is used, and it is set to 1024M, which is large for a large portion of development projects.
The parameters are present in setDomainEnv.sh/cmd. It is situated in <JDEV_HOME?>system11.1.1.0.31.51.56/DefaultDomain/bin
I've seen this directory show up in funny places so search for it if you can't find it.
I've set the second set of parameters to the same as the first ones -Xms256m -Xmx512m.

    Hi Mike ..
Reinstall OS X. That will also reinstall a new copy of Safari for you.
Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you should be able to access the built in utiliities to reinstall OS X using OS X Recovery.

  • I'm on iTunes 11.0.0.63 for Windows. iTunes used to display the total number of songs in my library, along with total playtime and memory footprint, at the bottom of the window. How can I make it display this information like it used to?

Hello! Thanks in advance for reading my question.
so, I updated iTunes to 11.0.0.63 on Windows, and the new layout looks nice, but iTunes no longer gives my total song count, memory footprint, and total play-time at the bottom of the window, the way it used to. I just want to know how to get that info back. Thanks so much!

Ctrl / or View > Show Status Bar should do it.
Weirdly having turned mine on the menu is not there to hide it again and the shortcut doesn't work.

  • My Safari window has "zoomed in". I can't get it back to the regular size. How do I do this?

I have a 27 inch new iMac.My Safari window has "zoomed in" and I can't get it back to the regular size. I am using Lion 10.7.3. Can anyone help?
    Thank you.

If it's just the Safari window, Press Command -
    several times to reduce.
If it's the whole screen, including menubar and dock then Hold down the Control key while you scroll down.
    Regards,
    Captfred
Also, If you're using a Magic Mouse, a double tap on the mouse with one finger will zoom, do it again to unzoom.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
    "Clear the Cache":
*Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • Will Installing more RAM improve performance, IF laptop has "available memory" not being used?

My laptop has 2x 1GB of RAM.
Right now, and usually, The Physical Memory shown in Task Manager, shows that there is "available memory" (currently it's 500megs worth). (And "system cache" says 300megs.)
There is also, right now, 2.5GB of page filing being used.
If I were to replace the 2GB of RAM with 4GB (of the same Mhz), would there be a noticable increase in performance?
    (windows XP 32bit OS)

A matched set of DDR2 ram will perform a lot faster one memory not matched. Its required for the double data rate to work. Hence 2+2 is the max you'd need/want in a 32bit machine. Windows 7 was built for large memory footprints. XP was built to run just barely in 64MB but really needed a min of 128MB to support a network connection and printing. It was never enable to truely go a whole lot further than a few machines built capable of 1GB. There was even a bug which was patch causing problems if a !GB or more was available. Just because it can see it does not mean it actually uses it !! The kernal by default is swapped in/out of ram even in larger memory systems. Why, it was is not aware of the extra memory and does not change its behavour from a 512MB machine.
As for the 1333Mhz ram the timing may be faster than the other memory used. Hence it flow the data faster on the bus. Fewer delays in various cycles including the RAS/CAS etc but thats all under the hood so to speak.

  • Downloading Safari via Windows computer

    Hi all
I want to download the standalone installer of Safari 3.1 for Mac via a Windows computer, but all the links take me to the Windows download page.
    Does anyone have another link?
    Thanks
    Stefan

I have the opposite problem I am trying to download Safari for windows from a Mac but apple has introduced this block now so you can only download files relating to the operating system you are using!
direct links for Windows simply load the mac version on a mac and direct links for the mac version download a windows version on a mac.
This restriction is frustrating at least, some of us like to have flash memory with BOTH verions on so we can use it on whatever version of machine we have and diret downloads is not often possible due to firewalls. Please Apple remove this OS specific restriction give us back our links to the other operating system
