Safari (only?) errors with Apple Discussion Pages

I have been having connection problems with my ISP -- intermittent inability to load web pages or Widget updates, etc., or just very slow loading. It is extremely intermittent: over the space of an hour or two it can go from full speed cable to near zero to flat out dead.
Complicating things greatly is that sometimes, during the slow-but-not-dead periods, Safari refuses to load Apple Discussions pages at all, displaying error messages with or without an number number, but always saying the connection was lost. Sometimes this is after a minute or so of trying to load the page, which I attribute to the slowness of the connection, but other times it is immediate. When this happens, retry or going to another page with a link back to the first page & trying that continues to get the error immediately.
IOW, Safari won't even try to reload the page. I have tried emptying the cache, but it doesn't help. Other pages will load, but slowly.
At this point, I can get the page to load by copying the URL into Internet Explorer, so I know the page is available & the connection, although slow, is capable of sending the page to my computer.
Does anyone have an explanation for this behavior? Or better yet, a way to convince Safari to try to reload the page?

well friend, thanks again for all your help. i found a lot of help on another thread if you're interested: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1195713&tstart=0
regardless, here's some things i did that seem to have helped for now... significantly speeding up my web browsing:
    1. I changed from WPA/WPA 2 to just WPA 2 (this seemed to have helped the most)
    2. I added two 'general' DNS addresses in my preferences/network settings (this also seemed to help):
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    3. under my preferences/network settings, I completely turned off Configure IPv6. (I don't know if this has helped but it was suggested and it doesn't seem to have hurt)
Unless I'm connected to a cisco client, I still have very slow to no browsing on the apple discussions pages but all other pages seem to be working now without cisco.
    until next time.

  • HT1528 Why can't I bookmark this page like I can with support.discussions pages?

Why can't I bookmark this page like I can with support.discussions pages?

    Hi UI Guy,
I can't provide the technical reason, however, I'm farilry certain it is a function of Forum structure itself.
Don't know if you are interested in suggestions to meet your need to "bookmark pages within the Apple Support system so you can refer back to them easily", but I use them regularly, and do this one of two ways (I use both):
If it is strictly an Apple Support page that I retrieved from Apple, I bookmark it with clear easy to find names, and put them in my Apple Support Folder in my bookmarks (I use Firefox). That way, when I need to provide a link to someone I'm replying to, I can quickly find the item I want them to be able to link to.
I also bookmark discussions that have links in them that I may want to use, and tag them so I can find them later.
I have to say, however, that for Apple Support Pages, the best solution for me has been to have my Apple Folder with my personally named bookmarks in Firefox. Easy to find, easy to cut and paste into a discussion on a separate window, easy to reference when I need to know something.
Again, don't know if you even wanted to know any of that, but thought I'd share!
    Cheers,
    GB

  • Multi-Touch Touchpad only works with Apple apps?

Hi, I was wondering if the touch gesture on the touchpad only works with Apple apps. I can not get the 3 finger swipe to work on Firefox but it works on Safari. Do you guys know if there is a way to get around this problem?

I can not get the 3 finger swipe to work on Firefox but it works on Safari.
Another reasons to go with Safari as your main Browser. It has ever improving performance too. Firefox is a bit out of date imo now (The Mozilla Foundation is actually going through beta testing and development of an improved browser), so offers little apart from customization of its appearance, not a factor ahead of Safari either imo since it has a neat professional appearance.

Has anyone had the Network time and date error with Apple TV when traveling?

    Jasion,
Maybe a bit beside the question, but it is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky, at least for a while, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
In addition to the (far greater) risk of file corruption, some issues are mentioned here:

My MacBook died and my hard drive was removed, are my existing files only compatible with Apple products? Are the files encrypted with Apple OS or am I able to import my files to Microsoft programs?

The drive as a whole can’t be read on a PC without installing software such as MacDrive on it.
The answer varies for individual document files; some file formats can be read by Windows software, while others can't.

  • Can't load Apple Discussion page in Safari

The phone Tech support people have tried to help me with the problem I am having loading the discussion pages on Safari. The only way I can get to it is on Firefox. In the Safari cache, there are several files filled with binary codes, and the last rep I talked to thought the Safari cache might have something to do with it. Also, weird console logs. Any ideas? Thank you very much.

It appears to be fixed I am using Safari right now.
All I had to do was Toss my Cookies.
I could browse Discussions as long as I never logged on but as soon as I logged in I would get Error "The page cannot be displayed" and then I would not be able to get anywhere in the discussions without getting that error. I would have to quit and restart Safari just so I could read Discussions, as long as I never tried to log in.
Just delete your cookies I did not try to figure which one was bad I just deleted them all.

  • Safari 4.1.3 issue with Apple Discussions

Several times yesterday and this morning, and continually this evening, I have got the redirect URL below when trying to get to Apple Discussions (index page, or directly to any of the forums I frequent) using Safari 4.1.3 on my iBook G4, running Tiger (10.4.11).
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=97
"We're sorry, Apple Discussions is temporarily unavailable. We'll be back soon.
    Until then, please visit http://www.apple.com/support"
(This one was collected just now.)
Yet, as is obvious from this post, and a couple I've just made in the numbers '09 forum, Apple Discussions is not 'temporarily unavailable' using Firefox.
And Safari 5.0.3 on the iMac (intel, running Leopard v10.5.8) also connects successfully.
I've cleared Safari's cache, but haven't taken any further steps yet.
    Anyone else experiencing anything similar?
    Regards,
    Barry

Deleting cookies coming from discussions and restarting Safari solved the issue.

  • Safari 4.0.3 - Apple Home Page takes ages to load

    Hi Everyone,
Whenever I start up Safari at its default home page (www.Apple.com/starpage) it takes a couple of minutes for the page to load completely.
Once the page has (finally) loaded, I get the below message in the status bar at bottom of the Safari Window:
One error in opening the page. For more information choose Window > Activity
On opening the Window > Activity Dialog box, the below error message is shown:

I have tried clearing Safari History, cache etc but to no avail.
Any idea how I can get cure this problem?
    Many thanks in advance!

It's a web site error, not a Safari problem. The best you can do is notify the webmaster for Apple.com and ask them to fix that specific error.
    Golden Shoes,
Re your above advice, you were spot on!!
I sent feedback to Apple.com about this problem script yesterday and to Apple's credit, they appear to have fixed it. No more inordinate waiting for the page to load any more!
Thank you so much. My thanks also to everyone else who contributed with their knowledge and experience, it is most appreciated.
BadgerDog, I hope that your problem may also have been resolved by the recent fix from Apple.

  • Changing Apple ID associated with Apple Discussions

I know it's not currently possible to delete a Discussions account nor is it possible to change the alias tied to an existing account. This is most unfortunate and would fix my issue immediately, but I'm sure that this has already been discussed at length. My issue is a little different, though.
A couple of years back I used to subscribe to .Mac and created an Discussions account to use with it. I let that expire a while ago and since signed up for a MobileMe account with the same username. The old one wasn't migrated over so I did have to create an entirely new account with MobileMe. Anyway, this meant that I had to also create a new Discussions account to go along with this new Apple ID (@me.com). The thing is, my old .Mac (@mac.com) is still usable and is what I'm using to post to this board right now.
My question is about migrating the old account. Is there any way that I can somehow migrate this old account to use the new @me.com address as it's Apple ID? If I go to modify my settings through the Discussions page itself, I'm told that I can't change the Apple ID since it's tied to iChat. So now I'm stuck with a Discussions account tied to my old Apple ID but with the alias I'd like to use (this one) and a new Discussions account with my new Apple ID (the one I'd like to use to login to Discussions) but with an alias that I'd really, really, really not like to use (I thought I could change it later and created one I'd rather not have public).
Is my only option to continue using my old Apple ID to login to Discussions to keep the alias I want?
I've now got 3 different Apple IDs and it's not fun. One for Discussions, one for iTunes that I've used for all of my purchases, and now one for MobileMe. Ugh!

I don't understand exactly WHY you want to change. If it is because your email is now @me.com, then all you have to do is change it in your settings. I use mac.com as my Apple ID sign-in but I use my AOL email address.
I thought I was pretty clear in my initial post, but I guess not. I would like to change it so that I don't have three separate Apple IDs. I have one for Discussions, one for iTunes, and one for MobileMe. It's just annoying to have three separate logins for the same company.
I have already updated my contact email address to reflect in Discussions, but this does not change the login address, which is what I was complaining about.
The Apple ID is just a user name for log-in purposes; you can use just about ANYTHING as an Apple ID as long as it is formatted to look like an email address. This is shown by the fact that you have an @mac.com ID but you DON'T have an @mac.com email address.
I totally understand what it is and that's why I find it annoying that I now must manage 3 separate ones to use with Apple products/services. I never expressed any confusion as to what an Apple ID is or what they are used for. In fact, I went into great detail explaining all of the Apple IDs that I have and what they are used for. I'm beginning to wonder if you even read my post. :\
I do agree with you that the hosts here should allow account info be moved to a new account or at least the alias be moved.
Yes, as this would easily fix my issue. I could at least bring it down to two Apple IDs... I could use the same one for Discussions and MobileMe if I could just change my alias.

  • Printing error with odd/even pages

Apologies if this is the wrong group, I looked for a more
    appropriate one
but there doesn't seem to be one on this server. If there's a
    better place
to ask this question, please let me know.
Anyhow, I'm using Acrobat Reader, latest version (I updated
    off the Adobe
site after first noticing the error just to be sure), and I'm
    having a
couple of serious bugs when it comes to printing odd-only or
    even-only pages
of a multi-page document. (I don't have one of those snazzy
    re-feeder
printers that can do both sides, so if I want to print
    double-sided I have
to do first one then the other.) At any rate, the problems
    are thus: on a
document which has an odd number of pages, if I tell it to
    print all
odd-numbered pages, it will invariably skip the first page.
    This one's not
that serious, as I can just manually print page 1 after the
    fact. The
really annoying problem occurs when I try to print the
    even-numbered pages.
What happens in this case is it prints the first page (i.e.
    Page 2) *twice*.
Once on the back of page 1 and again on the back of page 3.
    Needless to
say, I now have to throw one of them out and redo it. (I've
    taken to
printing the even-pages first now, so I can use the backside
    of that extra
page 2 for scrap paper, whereas previously the extra sheet
    was basically
useless as it was printed on both sides.) The bug does not
    seem to occur
with documents that have an even number of pages. Only those
    with an odd
number. Doesn't matter if I choose back-to-front or
    front-to-back. Doesn't
matter what printer I use, I've tried 3 different ones (and
    made sure I had
the latest drivers for each) and it happens in every case.
    I'm guessing
that there's some confusion in the software as to the number
    of pages it's
supposed to print. If a document has an odd number of pages,
    there's one
more odd-numbered page than there are even-numbered pages,
    and it's getting
it backwards, printing one more even-numbered page and one
    less odd-numbered
page. Anyhow, it's really annoying, and a waste of paper and
    ink as well.
Any ideas how to avoid this? (Seriously considering editing
    the documents
and adding one blank page to the end of every document with
    an odd number,
though it seems like that shouldn't be necessary...)

I am still using Snow Leopard so this fix doesn't work for me as there is no option to restore windows when quitting (I currently cannot upgrade to Lion as my memory isn't sufficient). Since dowloading 5.1, whenever I launch Safari it opens with a blank window instead of my homepage - plus it's VERY hit and miss as to what page I'm going to get when I open a new window or tab.

After a recent security update have been getting a box indicating error with an internet plug-in. This ouccurs with gmail "attempted to load an internet plug-in, but a plug-in error occurred." Close the box and e-mail seems to work fine. Same issue with websites and moving to different pages within the sites. Plug-in error, but afer closing the box can use the page. Strictly as a guess and as two products that have security issues and updates in recent times, maybe there's a down-revision version of Adobe Flash or of Oracle Java around?  Updates to those can be required.
