Safari only goes to one site
Once I open Safari, it opens to a page that says error. Then when you put in an address it goes to the same site (ampedwireless.com) reguardless of the address you enter. Running everything I can think of to clear it up, but so far no luck. Anyone ever seen this? Thanks
It's called a "captive portal," the sign-in page for a wireless network. Any page you try to load will be redirected to that one until you sign in. If you can't sign in with Safari, try another browser.

Hi
Something weird happened in Safari (the latest update). I was bored and on Mac Rumors.com and I just dragged some text to the Font Book icon in the dock. Suddenly all of the text on the page changed to bold. I tried restarting Safari and resetting it, but it didn't work. It is only on that one site but I visit it very frequently. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Safari only goes to 1 internet page, won't go elsewhere
So when I try and use the internet, safari only goes to the Vodafone 3G website, rather than google or anywhere else. Vodafone technical support had NFI about what to do .
The troubleshooting we did included a SIM card change, using a working SIM in the phone, which worked fine - we also used my SIM in another phone, which didn't. So it would seem to be an issue regarding my account, but not one that we could see - there were no blocks or bars on the phone account or anything like that.
I guess it's a long shot, but anyone have anything similar happen to them?Have you tried having the iPhone forget the network and then re-join? Don't know what your Internet setup is, but if it is a Cable Modem with an Ethernet running to the Airport Express; have you tried unplugging the Power from the Cable Modem and the Airport Express ...wait at least one minute and then plug the Modem back in. Next plug the Airport Express back in. Take a look at your Network via Airport Utility and see then click on your Airport Express and see if it is supporting any or all of your WiFi devices. If you only see your "First Laptop" being supported then depress "Edit" on Airport Utility on the Airport Express Balloon. See if your Setup has the Security correct (example: WPA2 Personal). See if the Network Name is exactly right. If you make any changes save them. Then whatever is not connecting should be made to rejoin the network.

Safari Quits Unexpectedly on One Site Only
My wife uses Safari to browse for shoes on the Piperlime website and Safari keeps shutting down while she's doing it. Not a problem for me, big problem for her. Only seems to happen on that one site and doesn't crash my G4 PBook. I've got Safari 2.0.4 (419.3) and here is the extensive error report that accompanied the last crash. I don't really know what I'm looking at/for here so any help would be appreciated!

I updated Safari to the most recent Beta and that seems to have done the trick - maybe the Java component of my old Safari was misfiring?
These type of errors usually indicate a problem with a web site, or a problem with one or more OS X core files.
Thanks for the update. Good to know for similar issues in the forum. I'm going to report this problem to Apple as a "bug", as I've seen this problem surface a number of times.
Relative to Safari 3, in case you use 3rd party items in association with Safari, there are a few compatibility issues of which you ought to be aware:
If you view PDF files "outside" of Safari via Adobe Reader or Acrobat, either of those applications needs to be updated to their most current version. Reader would be 8.1. Acrobat would be 8.
3rd party Safari items, such as PicLens, SAFT, Safari Stand, SafariPlus etc. need to be upgraded to their Safari 3 Beta versions.
SpeedDownload would also need to be updated.
If your Safari is "bare-bones", then nothing is required on your part for its operation.
There are a number of very useful features in Safari 3, including In-line Find (press the Command and F keys), which highlights text on a web page based on what you fill in on the Find-Bar (appears when you invoke the Command keys). Also, as you'll see when you post in this forum, or any page with a text box, you can drag the corner of the box to enlarge it. Also, the spotlight function in the Bookmarks Manager is more functional (Command/F keys will position the cursor in the search panel).
Other features are coming soon in concert with Leopards debut in October. These are noted here.
If for any reason you decide to revert to Safari 2, you must use the Uninstaller found in the Beta Installation package. Otherwise, you'll learn new curse words. -
Tunnel traffic only goes in one direction
I have established the VPN tunnel, verified with show isakmp and ipsec commands as well as watching the real time log in ASDM. The catch is the VPN tunnel can only be initiated from the remote end (Fortigate VPN Firewall) and I can ping from a remote computer, see the ICMP packet enter the tunnel, and see in the log on the ASA the ICMP with the remote source IP and no echo reply is sent back over the tunnel. If I try to ping from behind the local ASA and the tunnel isn't up, it never goes up. I am not sure what the problem is. I setup a different tunnel to my home ASA to ASA and everything works fine between the local ASA (192.168.150.1) and my home ASA (192.168.1.1).
I have been going through the "Most common L2L and Remote Access VPN" troubleshooting doc form Cisco and will turn on NAT-T on both ends, but what else do I need to do?

SSL afloading only goes to one server
Hi ,
I enabled SSL Afloading when i tried to access the servers by using VIP addres (192.168.11.11) only go to server1 (DB1), i tried with multiple machine and it gave me the same resault. please check the configuration and if it fine or ned to modify.Hi Steven,
The configuration looks fine.
Are all real servers operational? Can you try and shut the server to which all the connections are going, try again and see if the request goes to another server in serverfarm. There shouldn't be an issue if you have tested from different machines since the sticky is based on srcip-destip both.

In Firefox 3.6 the back arrow button to go back a page also had a down arrow button that would let you jump back multiple pages. How can I get that to show in Firefox 4?The arrow to open the tab history of the Back and Forward buttons has been removed in Firefox 4.
Use one of these methods to open the tab history list:
* Right click on the Back or Forward button
* Hold down the left mouse button on the enabled Back or Forward button until the list opens
You can look at this extension:

HT3275 Time Machine only goes back one week!
I've been backing up for well over a year. My backup disk is 1TB and my Mac drive is only 500MB. The backup is still only half full. Why can't I find data from months ago?
Did you upgrade to Mavericks between then and now.. if so the old backups are difficult to get hold of.. you can do it but only by manually accessing the sparsebundle..
See the info in Pondini here.

Try Q15 but it is good to read the whole section on restore from 14-17..
Mavericks has made life that much harder. -
Safari is defaulting to Top Sites when I want to edit my bookmarks
For some reason Safari is going to Top Sites whenever I try to edit my bookmarks, and the same thing is happening randomly when I click a hyperlink in my mail program. This just started yesterday and I have never chosen Top Sites as a default for anything ever. How do I undo it? I don't have Top Sites chosen for any default in my prefs either
They don't install themselves, but you may be tricked into installing them when you think you're installing something else.
1. This is a comment on what you should—and should not—do to protect yourself from malicious software ("malware") that circulates on the Internet and gets onto a computer as an unintended consequence of the user's actions. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the computer, or who has been able to log in to it remotely. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it.
The comment is long because the issue is complex. The key points are in sections 5, 6, and 10.
OS X now implements three layers of built-in protection specifically against malware, not counting runtime protections such as execute disable, sandboxing, system library randomization, and address space layout randomization that may also guard against other kinds of exploits.
2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user. Internally Apple calls it "XProtect."
The malware recognition database used by XProtect is automatically updated; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
☞ It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets.
☞ It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
As new versions of OS X are released, it's not clear whether Apple will indefinitely continue to maintain the XProtect database of older versions such as 10.6. The security of obsolete system versions may eventually be degraded. Security updates to the code of obsolete systems will stop being released at some point, and that may leave them open to other kinds of attack besides malware.
3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been a second layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't necessarily been tested by Apple, but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. That may not mean much if the developer lives in a country with a weak legal system (see below.)
Gatekeeper doesn't depend on a database of known malware. It has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
☞ It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
☞ A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could simply ignore the consequences of distributing codesigned malware.
☞ An App Store developer could find a way to bypass Apple's oversight, or the oversight could fail due to human error.
Apple has so far failed to revoke the codesigning certificates of some known abusers, thereby diluting the value of Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. These failures don't involve App Store products, however.
For the reasons given, App Store products, and—to a lesser extent—other applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed, are safer than others, but they can't be considered absolutely safe. "Sandboxed" applications may prompt for access to private data, such as your contacts, or for access to the network. Think before granting that access. Sandbox security is based on user input. Never click through any request for authorization without thinking.
4. Starting with OS X 10.8.3, a third layer of protection has been added: a "Malware Removal Tool" (MRT). MRT runs automatically in the background when you update the OS. It checks for, and removes, malware that may have evaded the other protections via a Java exploit (see below.) MRT also runs when you install or update the Apple-supplied Java runtime (but not the Oracle runtime.) Like XProtect, MRT is effective against known threats, but not against unknown ones. It notifies you if it finds malware, but otherwise there's no user interface to MRT.
5. The built-in security features of OS X reduce the risk of malware attack, but they are not, and never will be, complete protection. Malware is a problem of human behavior, and a technological fix is not going to solve it. Trusting software to protect you will only make you more vulnerable.
The best defense is always going to be your own intelligence. With the possible exception of Java exploits, all known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "Trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and the scam artists. If you're smarter than they think you are, you'll win. That means, in practice, that you always stay within a safe harbor of computing practices. How do you know when you're leaving the safe harbor? Below are some warning signs of danger.
Software from an untrustworthy source
☞ Software of any kind is distributed via BitTorrent, or Usenet, or on a website that also distributes pirated music or movies.
☞ Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, doesn't come directly from the developer’s website. Do not trust an alert from any website to update Flash, or your browser, or any other software.
☞ Rogue websites such as Softonic and CNET Download distribute free applications that have been packaged in a superfluous "installer."
☞ The software is advertised by means of spam or intrusive web ads. Any ad, on any site, that includes a direct link to a download should be ignored.
Software that is plainly illegal or does something illegal
☞ High-priced commercial software such as Photoshop is "cracked" or "free."
☞ An application helps you to infringe copyright, for instance by circumventing the copy protection on commercial software, or saving streamed media for reuse without permission.
Conditional or unsolicited offers from strangers
☞ A telephone caller or a web page tells you that you have a “virus” and offers to help you remove it. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
☞ A web site offers free content such as video or music, but to use it you must install a “codec,” “plug-in,” "player," "downloader," "extractor," or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one.
☞ You win a prize in a contest you never entered.
☞ Someone on a message board such as this one is eager to help you, but only if you download an application of his choosing.
☞ A "FREE WI-FI !!!" network advertises itself in a public place such as an airport, but is not provided by the management.
☞ Anything online that you would expect to pay for is "free."
Unexpected events
☞ A file is downloaded automatically when you visit a web page, with no other action on your part. Delete any such file without opening it.
☞ You open what you think is a document and get an alert that it's "an application downloaded from the Internet." Click Cancel and delete the file. Even if you don't get the alert, you should still delete any file that isn't what you expected it to be.
☞ An application does something you don't expect, such as asking for permission to access your contacts, your location, or the Internet for no obvious reason.
☞ Software is attached to email that you didn't request, even if it comes (or seems to come) from someone you trust.
I don't say that leaving the safe harbor just once will necessarily result in disaster, but making a habit of it will weaken your defenses against malware attack. Any of the above scenarios should, at the very least, make you uncomfortable.
6. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it—not JavaScript—in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site.
Stay within the safe harbor, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can practically be. The rest of this comment concerns what you should not do to protect yourself.
7. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" (AV) or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they are all worse than useless. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use one of the free security apps in the Mac App Store—nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial AV products?
☞ To recognize malware, the software depends on a database of known threats, which is always at least a day out of date. This technique is a proven failure, as a major AV software vendor has admitted. Most attacks are "zero-day"—that is, previously unknown. Recognition-based AV does not defend against such attacks, and the enterprise IT industry is coming to the realization that traditional AV software is worthless.
☞ Its design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere. In order to meet that nonexistent threat, commercial AV software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
☞ By modifying the operating system, the software may also create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
☞ Most importantly, a false sense of security is dangerous.
8. An AV product from the App Store, such as "ClamXav," has the same drawback as the commercial suites of being always out of date, but it does not inject low-level code into the operating system. That doesn't mean it's entirely harmless. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
An AV app is not needed, and cannot be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful, if at all, only for detecting Windows malware, and even for that use it's not really effective, because new Windows malware is emerging much faster than OS X malware.
Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else. A malicious attachment in email is usually easy to recognize by the name alone. An actual example:
London Terror Moovie.avi [124 spaces] Checked By Norton Antivirus.exe
You don't need software to tell you that's a Windows trojan. Software may be able to tell you which trojan it is, but who cares? In practice, there's no reason to use recognition software unless an organizational policy requires it. Windows malware is so widespread that you should assume it's in everyemail attachment until proven otherwise. Nevertheless, ClamXav or a similar product from the App Store may serve a purpose if it satisfies an ill-informed network administrator who says you must run some kind of AV application. It's free and it won't handicap the system.
The ClamXav developer won't try to "upsell" you to a paid version of the product. Other developers may do that. Don't be upsold. For one thing, you should not pay to protect Windows users from the consequences of their choice of computing platform. For another, a paid upgrade from a free app will probably have all the disadvantages mentioned in section 7.
9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.
10. As a Mac user, you don't have to live in fear that your computer may be infected every time you install software, read email, or visit a web page. But neither can you assume that you will always be safe from exploitation, no matter what you do. Navigating the Internet is like walking the streets of a big city. It's as safe or as dangerous as you choose to make it. The greatest harm done by security software is precisely its selling point: it makes people feel safe. They may then feel safe enough to take risks from which the software doesn't protect them. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices. -
CrazymacdudeI went through a bunch of font problems today, finally found out what was wrong. But with all the deleting, adding etc. I might have made a mistake. lost track: suddenly a bunch Safari pages come up only in bold (if not heavy or extrabold). For a short while I even had all the light fonts coming up as italics. What's wrong? — All the system fonts are correct.

Dear All,
Good Morning,
I am having an issue at work. The problem is with software updates deployement. We have a CAS arcitechture with 2 Primary site and 16 distribution points. When i create an ADR, The Packages arrives at the DPS but only installs on one site but the other site
stays in unkown state. I reviewed the rule engine log but no errors are found except the something fishy which keeps repeating :
"RuleEngine: 12652752 minutes is greater than MAX_TIME of 15 minutes, will sleep for MAX_TIME"
Do you guys have any idea what might be the issue cause am out of ideas here :(
Hoping to have a reply.
Kind Regards,
Mathieu MarioleHello Torsten,
Thanks for taking the time to look into the matter,
Software Distribution is working. Ive just installed an Application through this particular Managment point it installed fine. You can view the screenshot below.

Safari Will Not Download pdfs: On One Site and from One Computer Only
On only one computer, at only one web site (my own creation), I suddenly cannot get pdfs to open in Safari 4.0. What might be happening?
1. I have created 5 web sites for my business. I use RapidWeaver from RealMacSoftware.
2. Each of the 5 sites I’ve created has downloadable pdfs.
3. Two of the sites are password protected, but this does not appear to be the source of the problem.
4. One of these two protected sites (Site A) will not open any pdfs on the site in a Safari browser window on my Intel iMac running 10.5.7. When I click on a pdf link in Safari, I get the gray spinning wheel on a white page (which does not stop after 10+ minutes). If I try to reload the page, a white page results. Trying any other pdf link on this site produces nothing but a white page.
5. If I option-click on the link, the pdf downloads fine, but I then have to open it. It does not open in Safari, but rather Reader.
6. This behavior does not occur on two other Macs in my office. One, a MacBook Pro running 10.5.7 and Safari 4.0, opens the pdfs in Safari just fine. Another, a G5 running Tiger with Safari 4.0, also works fine. (FWIW: No problems on Dell running XP Home, via either Explorer or Firefox.)
7. The behavior also does not occur on the other protected site I have created (Site B) or on any of the other unprotected sites. All computers, all browsers—no problems.
8. I have the latest Adobe Reader version (9.1.2).
9. I have repaired permissions and restarted—no luck.
10. I have republished Site A through RapidWeaver, but there is no change. My web host had a power failure a day or two ago, but all sites were up and running yesterday.
Any clues about what’s going on? I have intentionally not downloaded the apparently available Safari version 4.0.1 because of the several problems reported on the boards.
Message was edited by: Richard SetterbergI tried logging in to the guest account and got a slightly different result: Two of the five websites I've created with RapidWeaver now do not display pdfs using the Adobe Reader plugin.
The common thread now is that the two that don't work are the password protected sites. When I boot back into my main account, the original problem returns: Only one site doesn't work; the other one does.
Still only on one computer.
