Safari only loading selected websites
Hi there.
I am new to Macs and have just recently purchased a imac pentium version.
However only after a few weeks my Safari doesnt work - it displays an error message saying lost connection NSURLErrorDomain:-1005. Randomly it will let me access certain https websites - like my barclays online banking website. My email and ichat work fine. My itunes store doesn't however . All very weird. After hours of time with the apple support people i still haven't found a solution.
I have tried re-installing the operating system twice and it works perfectly for a while but then as soon as i install something else - itunes 7.03 for example - after reboot it won't work anymore.
All very strange,
I have also tried a virus scanner and none were found.
Any help would be welcome before i take it back to the shop and resort back to my trusted PC
Thanks
Semar
Hi
Welcome to Apple Discussions and Mac Computing
In the short term, go to your System Preferences>Network>TCP panel and enter (or copy/paste) the following codes in the DNS servers box: 208.67.222.220 and 208.67.220.222 (separate lines)
Select "apply".
Restart Safari.
If no improvement, please describe your network setup, including cable box, wireless unit (if applicable). Include Manufacture's name.
Also, there is no virus that presently, or in the past, has affected the Mac Platform.

I have turned off my firewall and turned off my cybersitter and it still only loads secure sites.
Any thoughts.

I try to launch Safari and it just spins. I have tried the "reset safari" and still has not worked. It states that " safari could not open the page "http://www.mac.com/" because the server stopped responding."
However, I am working on FireFox so the server is working. Help!
iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.9)the clock which was set to digital displays wrong time...i even set the time zone.
If you open the Date & Time System Preferences, you can select an option to use a Network Time Server. Does selecting a Network Time Server keep the time correctly? (Of course, you will have to be online some time during the day for the time to update itself.)
Also safari wont load any other website but apple start page
What happens if you try to visit any other Web page? Do you see an error message? If you open the "Activity" window from the Safari > Window menu, do you see any activity running?
my iphoto is allowing me to upload photos
Do you mean to say that iPhoto is NOT allowing you to upload photos? Again, do you see any kind of error message? What does happen? Does your camera or memory card appear on the Desktop as a hard drive? Can you open the Image Capture application (from inside the /Applications/ folder) and use that to download some of the pictures to your Desktop or another location?
If you use the Accounts System Preferences to create a new user, log out and log in as the new user, can they import pictures with iPhoto? Does Safari work correctly for the new user as well?

safari has stopped loading certain websites, all software is up to date. Have tried resetting safari with no result. Any ideas?
If you follow the instructions at http://www.opendns.com/start , does the problem go away? If so, your ISP is having DNS troubles.
(Hopefully you can get to Open DNS.) -
Safari Not Loading Selected Sites
Safari is not loading few sites and if it does (like Facebook/Twitter/BBC/Flipkart/Amazon), it is very slow and it turns out to be like the screenshot attached. But opens banking sites, apple.com and other sites absolutely fine (snapdeal.com)
1. Checked and changed the DNS once.
2. Restarted the WiFi router and my Macbook Air.
3. Checked the Firewall & Gatekeeper settings

Please help.
Thanks. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe modeand log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
Help please! Safari keeps loading unwanted websites.
After clicking on certain pages I want to view on Safari, it loads that page as well as pages like www.efix.com for Mac repair which is really annoying. It also capitalises certain words on web pages with links to clean and repair windows errors. I viewed a previous thread by someone called Davis, but this didn't work for me as I presume it's to dated. Is there any current suggestions that you helpful bunch could give me to try and cease this annoyance?
Click here and follow the instructions, or if there’s a type of adware not covered by them on the computer, these ones.

Safari only loads pages if I refresh each time. What is going on? Loading problem
Currently I had to refresh every single page to post this question.
My Safari 5.1.2 is not loading pages correctly. I click on a link or enter in a url to go to any website and Safari goes and tries to obtain waht I asked for, but stops loading after 60-80% is done (based on loading items on bottom info bar). I wait for another 120 seconds, and still nothing.
I hit the stop loading button and press refresh and the page loads automatically perfect. This is frustrating to use right now, and I do not have any other browsers to try anything else on. Why am I having this problem?Delete the cache lately?
Quit Safari.
Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari.
Move the Cache.db from the com.apple.Safari folder file to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari.
If that didn't help, from the Safari menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari
Select the top 5 boxes, click Reset.
BTW, if Safari isn't working at all, having a backup browser installed can help. If you need to re download Safari or support files you can.

Safari only loading secure sites
Since applying the recent Mavericks update (10.9.3) which included updating to Safari 7.0.4, I can only access secure sites. I have tried using Chrome and Firefox but the same problem exists. Any advice would be appreciated.
1. This is a comment on what you should—and should not—do to protect yourself from malicious software ("malware") that circulates on the Internet and gets onto a computer as an unintended consequence of the user's actions. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the computer, or who has been able to log in to it remotely. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it.
If you find this comment too long or too technical, read only sections 5, 6, and 10.
OS X now implements three layers of built-in protection specifically against malware, not counting runtime protections such as execute disable, sandboxing, system library randomization, and address space layout randomization that may also guard against other kinds of exploits.
2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user. Internally Apple calls it "XProtect."
The malware recognition database used by XProtect is automatically updated; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets.
It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
As new versions of OS X are released, it's not clear whether Apple will indefinitely continue to maintain the XProtect database of older versions such as 10.6. The security of obsolete system versions may eventually be degraded. Security updates to the code of obsolete systems will stop being released at some point, and that may leave them open to other kinds of attack besides malware.
3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been a second layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't necessarily been tested by Apple, but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. That may not mean much if the developer lives in a country with a weak legal system (see below.)
Gatekeeper doesn't depend on a database of known malware. It has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could simply ignore the consequences of distributing codesigned malware.
An App Store developer could find a way to bypass Apple's oversight, or the oversight could fail due to human error.
Apple has so far failed to revoke the codesigning certificates of some known abusers, thereby diluting the value of Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. These failures don't involve App Store products, however.
For the reasons given, App Store products, and—to a lesser extent—other applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed, are safer than others, but they can't be considered absolutely safe. "Sandboxed" applications may prompt for access to private data, such as your contacts, or for access to the network. Think before granting that access. Sandbox security is based on user input. Never click through any request for authorization without thinking.
4. Starting with OS X 10.8.3, a third layer of protection has been added: a "Malware Removal Tool" (MRT). MRT runs automatically in the background when you update the OS. It checks for, and removes, malware that may have evaded the other protections via a Java exploit (see below.) MRT also runs when you install or update the Apple-supplied Java runtime (but not the Oracle runtime.) Like XProtect, MRT is effective against known threats, but not against unknown ones. It notifies you if it finds malware, but otherwise there's no user interface to MRT.
5. The built-in security features of OS X reduce the risk of malware attack, but they are not, and never will be, complete protection. Malware is a problem of human behavior, and a technological fix is not going to solve it. Trusting software to protect you will only make you more vulnerable.
The best defense is always going to be your own intelligence. With the possible exception of Java exploits, all known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "Trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and the scam artists. If you're smarter than they think you are, you'll win. That means, in practice, that you always stay within a safe harbor of computing practices. How do you know when you're leaving the safe harbor? Below are some warning signs of danger.
Software from an untrustworthy source
Software of any kind is distributed via BitTorrent. or Usenet, or on a website that also distributes pirated music or movies.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, doesn't come directly from the developer’s website. Do not trust an alert from any website to update Flash, your browser, or anything else.
Rogue websites such as Softonic and CNET Download distribute free applications that have been packaged in a superfluous "installer."
The software is advertised by means of spam or intrusive web ads. Any ad, on any site, that includes a direct link to a download should be ignored.
Software that is plainly illegal or does something illegal
High-priced commercial software such as Photoshop is "cracked" or "free."
An application helps you to infringe copyright, for instance by circumventing the copy protection on commercial software, or saving streamed media for reuse without permission.
Conditional or unsolicited offers from strangers
A telephone caller or a web page tells you that you have a “virus” and offers to help you remove it. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
A web site offers free content such as video or music, but to use it you must install a “codec,” “plug-in,” "player," "downloader," "extractor," or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one.
You win a prize in a contest you never entered.
Someone on a message board such as this one is eager to help you, but only if you download an application of his choosing.
A "FREE WI-FI !!!" network advertises itself in a public place such as an airport, but is not provided by the management.
Anything online that you would expect to pay for is "free."
Unexpected events
You open what you think is a document and get an alert that it's "an application downloaded from the Internet." Click Cancel and delete the file. Even if you don't get the alert, you should still delete any file that isn't what you expected it to be.
An application does something you don't expect, such as asking for permission to access your contacts, your location, or the Internet for no obvious reason.
Software is attached to email that you didn't request, even if it comes (or seems to come) from someone you trust.
I don't say that leaving the safe harbor just once will necessarily result in disaster, but making a habit of it will weaken your defenses against malware attack. Any of the above scenarios should, at the very least, make you uncomfortable.
6. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it—not JavaScript—in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site.
Stay within the safe harbor, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can practically be. The rest of this comment concerns what you should not do to protect yourself.
7. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" (AV) or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they are all worse than useless. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use one of the free security apps in the Mac App Store—nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial AV products?
To recognize malware, the software depends on a database of known threats, which is always at least a day out of date. This technique is a proven failure, as a major AV software vendor has admitted. Most attacks are "zero-day"—that is, previously unknown. Recognition-based AV does not defend against such attacks, and the enterprise IT industry is coming to the realization that traditional AV software is worthless.
Its design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere. In order to meet that nonexistent threat, commercial AV software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
By modifying the operating system, the software may also create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
Most importantly, a false sense of security is dangerous.
8. An AV product from the App Store, such as "ClamXav," has the same drawback as the commercial suites of being always out of date, but it does not inject low-level code into the operating system. That doesn't mean it's entirely harmless. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
An AV app is not needed, and cannot be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful, if at all, only for detecting Windows malware, and even for that use it's not really effective, because new Windows malware is emerging much faster than OS X malware.
Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else. A malicious attachment in email is usually easy to recognize by the name alone. An actual example:
London Terror Moovie.avi [124 spaces] Checked By Norton Antivirus.exe
You don't need software to tell you that's a Windows trojan. Software may be able to tell you which trojan it is, but who cares? In practice, there's no reason to use recognition software unless an institutional policy requires it. Windows malware is so widespread that you should assume it's in every email attachment until proven otherwise. Nevertheless, ClamXav or a similar product from the App Store may serve a purpose if it satisfies an ill-informed network administrator who says you must run some kind of AV application. It's free and it won't handicap the system.
The ClamXav developer won't try to "upsell" you to a paid version of the product. Other developers may do that. Don't be upsold. For one thing, you should not pay to protect Windows users from the consequences of their choice of computing platform. For another, a paid upgrade from a free app will probably have all the disadvantages mentioned in section 7.
9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.
10. As a Mac user you don't have to live in fear that your computer may be infected every time you install software, read email, or visit a web page. But neither should you assume that you will always be safe from exploitation, no matter what you do. The greatest harm done by security software is precisely its selling point: it makes people feel safe. They may then feel safe enough to take risks from which the software doesn't protect them. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices. -
After Update, Safari only loads some pages.
Hello,
On my Powerbook G4 (OS 10.4.11), I recently installed Security Update 2008-008 (PowerPC), and since I've installed it, Safari (v3.2.1) is loading only some pages. This is not just Safari, but Firefox will not load some pages either. Pages that will load include Google, Gmail, and Yahoo. Some pages that won't load include Apple, Facebook, YouTube, and most large pages. It seems that
When I ping these sites using Network Utility, the average pings for these pages are as follows:
Google: 100 ms
Gmail: 17 ms
Yahoo: 17 ms
Apple: 100% packet loss
Facebook: 90 ms
YouTube: 85 ms
I have 5 devices on the network: two Macbook Pros, one Powerbook, one Nintendo Wii, and one iPod Touch. Each device works perfectly fine except for the recently-updated Powerbook.
Failed attempts to fix the problem:
- Resetting Safari
- Restarting the computer
- Power cycling the router
- Resetting the PRAM and NVRAM
- Fixing Permissions
Are there any changed settings which could have caused this malfunction?
Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this problem?
Thanks for your help.
Message was edited by: PaviSaysHmmm… then there's some larger-scale corruption with files that we can't pinpoint, so at this point you should do an Archive & Install with the option to Preserve Users and Network Settings. You will not lose any programs or data, just get a new copy of OS X installed and the old one removed. The old copy will be put in a folder named Previous Systems, which you should delete. You will also need to download the 10.5.5 or 10.5.6 Combo Update and install that, as well as Use Software Update to bring your system current.
To do this:
1. Quit all running applications and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.
2. Insert your Mac OS X install/restore disc and restart your Mac from it (hold down the 'C' key until you see the startup screen).
3. Proceed with an install as normal, but choose Archive & Install with Preserve Users and Network Settings; then run the installer.
4. Eject the disc after the Mac restarts.
5. Quit Software Update if it runs and tells you to update things. Instead, download and install the 10.5.6 Combo Update; then run Software Update to bring your system current.
6. Repair Permissions again.

Safari only opens secure websites
Hello,
I connect to the internet wireless through my Time Capsule. I just returned from vacation, plugged everything back in, and now I can only connect to https sites. For example, http://www.gmail.com hangs up, but https://www.gmail.com loads. Has anyone ever heard of this happening?
I've been messing around with settings for about an hour with no luck. The network diagnostic says everything is working fine.
Thank you for your help in advance.HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Go to the Apple Menu / Software Updates. Make sure your system software is up to date, especially Safari.

Why will youtube on safari only load 1:30 of video?
I have been able to watch every youtube video I ever wanted to in the past on my phone, using safari and 3G on my phone, and now thy I updated to the latest version of iOS7 my phone will sometimes load a video great, but audio will not play, I have checked my speaker and tried using a headset and audio will still not work, or my phone will load 1 minute and 30 seconds of any youtube video, but after that point the image will freeze and audio will stop playing, any idea how to fix this problem?
It is quite common for flash-based players to have a hard limit on the number of files that can be placed in a folder (the root folder included). Try creating some sub-folders off the root and splitting the files between them. That may very well correct your problem.
Since navigating a flat file system on the player is tedious at best (if not nearly impossible) there is an assumption people will break things up into meaningful sub-folders. As such the hard limitations of the flash file system with respect to folder nesting depth and number of files in a single folder are generally not an issue. -
We use Managebac at the school where I teach and the website loads with my password and username on another teachers mac. However, it has stopped loading on mine. Any ideas?

Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
