Safari opening a .pdf document

I have a user who has Acrobat 5, 6, & 7 installed on his 10.3 system (don't ask me why - he just does).
If you do a GetInfo on a .pdf document, Acrobat 5 is listed as the default (which is what he wants).
However, if he uses Safari and clicks on a link to a .pdf document, it opens the document (in Safari) using Acrobat 7. He wants it to open the document external to Safari using Acrobat 5.
How can he set this (there doesn't seem to be a setting to control it).?

The reason is that Acrobat 7 introduced the direct integration between Safari and Acrobat by installing a component that automatically displays PDFs from Safari in Acrobat 7. Neither Acrobat 5 or 6 had this feature.
Your user should get rid of Acrobat 5 and 6 and not use three different versions at the same time as this completely confuses the document-application associations that autoconfigure in OS X.

The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

so when i try to open a pdf file, it is said "you need a later version of PDF viewer", so i do not know what is the problem

Please let me know if you have tried converting any other PDF to word with Reader.
Alos, please sign up at "https://cloud.acrobat.com/" using your Adobe ID credentials. Click on 'ExportPDF' tab and upload the PDF that you want to convert to Word.

Can you open the Preview program without loading a file, like by itself?
If it doesn't load then I suspect a corrupt Preview preference file.
Deleting the System Preference or other .plist file
Can you open other files with Preview, like jpg's and images?
How about other PDFs? or is it just that one you have downloaded?

Adobe Acrobat Pro XI is having some issues. When just the base program opens it freezes before I can even do anything with preferences. The same thing happens when I open a PDF document from anywhere. I have cleared the %temp% directory and repair installed the program with no success in finding a resolution to this issue. I have removed Adobe AIR as a thread indicated that this program could be the cause of some issues. I even restarted the print spooler as that was mentioned in a different post on Adobe Support Forums.

I would suggest rebooting (particularly if you have not) and log in as the administrator. Also, it sounds like you can open Acrobat, but then it locks up when you try to do the preferences. So in that case go to Help>Repair and apply that. Then repeat the process with Help>Updates to get current. See if that resolves the issues. Since you mentioned %temp%, I assume you are on a windows machine, but which one?

So I'm trying to open embedded PDF documents in a "parent" PDF document on an iPad.
On a PC the file opens fine.
On an iPad 2 with Adobe's Reader the same file says it's corrupted.
On PDF Pro the file opens, I can see the listing of embedded PDF documents but when I click on them nothing happens.
Is there a way for a PDF file with embedded hyperlinked PDF documents to be displayed on an iPad or Android?

pages on the iOS has access only to the camera roll to embedd pictures , but no external files.
Content from other documents like pdf can be copied and pasted by using Adobe Reader for iOS or the iBooks.app, open the pdf , copy text , then go to pages.app and paste text into the document there.

I have installed adobe reader. the OS is windows 7. When I open any PDF document using Internet Explorer 7, It stops with the message of Ruc time error. In our organisation, the links to the HR Policy documents are provided in our intranet. These documents are in PDF format protected with password. Also these documents are protected from Saving and Printing.We never face any security problems (No Save, No Tool Bars, Menu Bars, No Windows Controls and No Printing) till date using Adobe reader versions prior to ver 9.0. But our organization has recently upgraded the Adore Reader to 9.0. Now the users are able to save these PDF documents in their local systems and do printing also.
We don't want to system to prompt for "Save or Open" where the PDF documents are clicked. It should directly open the PDF document
If anyone of you can provide a solution, it will be a great.

You can't protect PDF documents from saving.

Does this only open on that specific site?
In any case, you may want to:
- instruct Firefox to handle PDF files in a specific way by going into Tools > Options > Applications and selecting the option you want for the PDF files
- reinstall Adobe Reader and its Firefox plugin
- install another reader instead of Adobe Reader. I recommend Foxit Reader ( http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/ ), since it's free, VERY light, VERY fast, safe and also has a Firefox plugin (make sure you don't have both Adobe Reader plugin and Foxit Reader plugin enabled/installed at the same time in Firefox)

How to I stop the Preview Pane in Windows 7 retaining control when I open a PDF document using Adobe Acrobat (Reader is NOT installed)

I have the preview pane active when selecting PDF Documents. When I open a PDF document I am unable to save any changes. the error message I receive:
"The documents could not be saved. The file ma be read-only,or another user may have it open. Please save the document with a different name of in a different folder"
The document is not read only and no other user has it open. If I turn the preview pane OFF there is no problem saving changes. I have also un-installed Adobe Reader.
Other programs (such as Excel, Word) do not experience the same problems as the PDF documents.
Does anyone have a solution?

It sounds like you just need to associate the PDF filename extension with Acrobat, rather than Preview. Please see this document from the Microsoft Help for instructions on choosing the default program for opening a particular file type (in your case, PDF): Change which programs Windows uses by default - Windows Help
