Safari opens at Startup

Wife's G4...on startup, Safari opens for no apparent reason. Trashed Plist,
installed latest Safari update, checked Safari preferences and startup items
folder to no avail. Repaired permissions, ran disk utility which reported and
repaired a minor error. No change in the problem. On the backup clone disk
from two weeks ago, there is no problem.
Any ideas why this might be happening? I think I'd rather wait for a system update than try to re install just to solve a minor problem like this but I am
curious as to what could be causing it.
Thanks
Mike

This is a perfect example of how knowing too much can lead you to
complicated and exotic attempts to fix a very simple issue.
Duh....she mistakenly checked the Open at Login choice in the Safari
dock icon.
yeah, I'm embarrassed.

  • Safari opens an HTML document on startup

To recover from a hard disc problem and minor crashes I created a clone (with SuperDuper) erased and reinstalled. Everything seems OK except for the minor issue that Safari launches on startup and opens an HTML document. Currently it is (file:///usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/html/XtCancelSelectionRequest.3.html) -previously it was a Spanish language file from the Pages application and it changed when I removed the language file. Safari is not set as a startup item in Accounts/Login. This happened on my cloned drive which I then copied back to my main drive. I have cleared Safari histories, caches removed plist and repaired permissions without success
    Any ideas?

Safari's default open page is set in Safari preferences. Open Safari preferences, click on the General icon in the toolbar. You will see the fields for setting the default page.
To stop Safari launching on startup verify that it isn't or some other item is included in the Login Items of Accounts preferences. Then also check /Library/StartupItems/ folder to see if a startup item is there that may be launching Safari.

    Hi there,
I have a 2013 MacBook Pro Retina, 16GB RAM. I have been having difficulties recently determining why I keep running out of memory - then I checked my Activity Monitor and it appears 4 or so gigabytes of my memory is being used with only Safari open! Is there anything I can do to find the source of this and stop it?

As OGELTHORPE stated you do not have a RAM issue. If you are experiencing problems I would look in to whatever app has installed all those kernel extensions. Those kernel extensions are made for older OS X systems and probably aren't compatible with Mavericks.

  • Login Items deleted and still opening at startup

    I deleted every login Item.
I have five programs opening at startup. Mail, Safari, Dictionary, Word for Mac and Online Bible.
I deleted them from SysPrefs/accounts/login Items.
    They still open at startup.
I am trying to switch from FireFox to Safari. If I have FireFox on the computer, even five folders down it opens at startup—all the programs do.
    Any suggestions?
    Blessings

    lightwait,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
There is one more place that you could look for these items.
Look in the Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems folder for any sign of those applications. What do you find there?
You mentioned that you placed Firefox 5 folders deep. This is not generally a good idea, especially with Apple Applications. Have you buried any other applications or utilities?
    ;~)

  • Safari launches on startup

I have a Quicksilver PPC. I gave it to my neighbor who has been having a couple issues lately. First one is Safari launches automatically upon startup and 2nd, is there a way to get Flashplayer installed on Tiger? I did a quick search on Adobe's website and was hoping to look for an older version that would be supported on a non-Intel Mac. I hate the fact that Flashplayer just stopped working. She said she hasn't had that problem before so it's new. Thank you in advance.

With Safari open, right-click (ctl-click) the Safari icon on the dock and uncheck "Open at Login" and that should stop the opening at startup.
With respect to flash, I have used Perian to play flash and a lot of other content through QuickTime.  Since doing that, flash has played nice on most sites at least and I can play FLV files through QT player, for instance.

Using multiple desktops with a 4 finger swipe on a Mac Book Pro running Lion- is there a way that I can allow Safari open on several but not all??  Looks like I can set it for one but not others.  All, one, or nothing

    Hey Eric,
Thanks for taking the time. Unfortunately no that does not solve it. Same as swipe it will get me there and it will show separate programs spaced out. The issue I am having is that all my open word files are bunched up in a pile on top of each other. I can see the edges of each one but I want them to be separated from each other enough that I can visually identify what file is what.
Again, thanks for trying, it is appreciated.

  • Open firmware startup disk by default

I have an iMac which by default always goes to the open firmware startup disk screen. How do I get rid of this? I have tried zapping the PRAM, reinstalling the OS and a different hard drive. There are no problems w/ the functionality of the computer or the software and there are no symptoms to say that there is anything wrong w/ the computer. Just want to get rid of having to hit enter at the firmware startup disk screen every time I turn it on. Any suggestions please.

Mark, it appears that the defauly startup mode has been changed on your Mac.
Probably the easiest way to get back to normal is using a utility. I use the free utility OnyX. In OnyX go to Parameters>Login and at the bottom of the pane you can change your Mac's default startup mode.

  • Safari opens to a page other than what I've defined in Preferences

    This has me stumped...
I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.4.  When I open Safari (6.0.5), it does not open the homepage (Google).  Instead, it automatically opens another website (http://pregnant.thebump.com/pregnancy-week-by-week/25-weeks-pregnant.aspx?MsdVis it=1). However, if I click the Home button on the browser, it does go to my homepage.   This happens every time Safari is opened, regardless of the last page or tabs that were open the last time Safari was closed.  This only happens with my wife's user, and only in Safari. It does not occur if I open Chrome as her user.  Things I've tried...
Resetting the homepage preferences in Safari / Preferences.
When I go to Safari / Extensions, there are no extensions listed. When I go to home folder / Library / Internet Plugins, the only one in there is Picasa.plugin.  I tried moving it to the desktop, resetting Safari, closing Safari, and the problem still exists when I open Safari back up.
I tried something similar with the Mac HD / Library / Internet Plugins folder.  Took them all to the desktop, reset Safari, closed Safari, opened Safari.  Problem still exists.
I've tried the Devolop / Empty Caches menu item.  I've tried “sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder” in Terminal to reset the DNS.
The only thing that seems to work is when I hold Shift as I open Safari. Only if I do that does it correctly go to the homepage.  I'm out of ideas.  Help?

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:

  • Photoshop Elements opening on startup, despite having shut it down prior to closure.

I am running Elements 13 on a MacBook Air O SX Yosemite version 10.10.
After installation I encountered the following issues.
    1)       Elements 13 Organiser application opened ok and transferred my photos from iPhoto.
    2)       Elements 13 Application opened o.k
    3)       Elements 13 Editor opened o.k
But latterly, when opening Elements 13 application after 1 second, the screen reverts to another copy of Elements 13 Organiser.
I have attempted to check the Installed files, to check if they are in the right location, cannot see any apparent issues.
Additionally on Start-UP  Elements 13 starts automatically despite having quit the programme prior to closure.
Maybe if I completely re-installed Elements 13 the problems might go away.
Your earliest response would be much appreciated.
    Kind Regards     David A Hullin

    Barbara Hi!
    Thanks for your quick response.
Sorry for the confusion regarding 2 Copies of Elements 13 Organiser.
What I intended to say is as follows:
On my Dock, after installing Elements 13, there are three adjacent Buttons for the Elements 13 Application from left to right:-
    1  Elements 13 Organiser
    2  Elements 13
    3  Elements 13 Editor
    MY ISSUES ARE:
    1  Elements Organiser  opens o.k.
    HOWEVER:
2 Elements 13      (To import work from the Elements Organiser),  the following happens:
This section of the application opens only briefly, (1.5 seconds,  headed appropriately  Elements 1  (But immediately reverts to a repeat copy of the Elements Organiser screen) which is activated by Button 1
    Button 3 Elements 13 Editor (opens) O.K.
P.S   Initially the application was working O.K
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind Regards

the screen reverts to another copy of Elements 13 Organiser.
What do you mean by this? There is only one copy of Elements 13 organizer installed on any mac.
I would start by deleting the preferences and the saved application states for PSE:

  • Safari opening linked .zip files directly from DVD instead of downloading

    Dear all,
Safari opening linked .zip files directly from DVD (via Windows explorer) instead of downloading it tru browser click - it's working just fine in FF, Chrome IE. Is this a known issue? or something can be done by modifying browser setting/pref.
    Expecting more advise on this.
    Configurations: Windows XP
    Safari: 5.1.7
Note: ensured there is no space in the file path, just linked the .zip file using href attribute!
Also tried with .xls, .doc insted of .zip same issue appearing.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi
appzapper & such are pretty flaky at removing things usefully, imo.
Use the uninstaller for speed download - http://www.yazsoft.com/products/speed-download/faqs/?how-to-un-install-speed-dow nload-properly
or get a hold of FindAnyFile or easyfind & search for Growl & Speeddownload & yazsoft - but from all I hear, the uninstaller works fine.
Failing that, Safari's settings plist file isn't in caches
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist
    is the place
& if you're still stuck, test & maybe download another browser using a New User Account.

  • Make Safari open PDF in preview automatically, by default

Is there any way I can make Safari open (download + view) PDF links in Preview?
I know that Safari opens PDFs in its own viewer, and then I can use the semi-opaque 4-button toolbar at the bottom of the window (when the toolbar is visible) to Open PDF in Preview, but that's a fair bit of extra work from a UI perspective.
I click the link to the PDF, and the PDF opens in a new Safari window.
I move the mouse to the bottom of the page, wait for the gray toolbar to appear, then click the Open PDF in Preview.
(This is assuming the toolbar shows itself, which for some reason it has stopped doing on some PDFs.)
Now I've got a Preview window with my document, plus the useless Safari PDF view, plus my original webpage.
    It's tedious and cumbersome.
Yes I know I could option-click the PDF link to automatically download the file, but that doesn't automatically open the file after it is downloaded.  Either way I have to mess around to open the file as I'd like to.

Right-click on the PDF document; select Get Info from the pop-up menu; in the lower half is a section labeled Open With. Select Preview from the choices listed, then click Change All... to make Preview the default appp for PDF documents.

  • Safari 7.0.4. Couldn't find option "Safari opens with:"

I'm using Safari 7.0.4. Couldn't find option "Safari opens with:". I want to enable all my tabs and windows to be restored where I left off when I quit Safari. I can see that option in my iMac which is running at same version level.

It should happen automatically, unless you checked the box marked Close all windows when quitting an application in the General pane of System Preferences.
