Safari opens by itself upon start-up.  Why?

I have had the problem in the past and it is back! Why does Safari open by itself first thing upon starting up my computer? Has my computer been hacked? Is this another problem with Mac OS X 10.4.6? Can somebody tell me?

madboy,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Go to System Preferences...>Accounts>My Account>Login Items, click on Safari and then on the icon.

hi guys I deleted my extension"bitdefender antivirus"but when I switch on my mac safari open up itself asking to instal the extension above what can I do to avoid this pain in the behind? Thanks

Uninstall "BitDefender" completely, not just the Safari extension.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to reboot in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, the uninstallation may have no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • Re: iTunes keeps opening by itself and starts playing music

I have something really strange going on.
My iTunes keeps opening by itself and starts playing music. I cannot figure this out. I turned off the "Sync Via Wireless" on all my gadgets, but this continues to happen. This has woken me up in the middle of the night until I got so tired of it I just shut my Mac down.
Anybody hear of this? Know what to do?

I had the same problem - and as well as opening by itself iTunes was skipping from track to track like crazy. But then I found a post from a few years ago that fixed this.
Connect your iPhone to your iMac and uncheck the box that says 'Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected'. Problem solved!
    Hope this works for you.

  • Safari opens by itself in the same page hundred of time wihout doing anything why.

I have a problem with safari even with google crome it opens by itself many times even when its close do you know why?

Which page is it?  Is it an ad?  Or a link to another site?  Can you coopy the URL address in the menu bar for us?

  • I tunes opens by itself and starts playing.  cnat stand it anymore.  has anyone heard of a solution to this problem yet?

itunes starts playing by itself.  sometimes when I am away or in the middle of the night when no one is around.  it will play and pause itself etc and quitting itunes or safari makes no difference, it is determined to drive me mad.

I'm assuming you have already done the standard troubleshooting steps:
If you get an error when trying to activate iMessage or FaceTime - Apple Support
There is is an ongoing thread in the forum & while some have finally had it resolved, others are still waiting,  There seems to be an issue with Date & more specifically Time not syncing properly.
On one of your devices try resetting by holding down the home & sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears then let go & let the iPad boot up normally,  Try to sign into iMessage/FaceTime again.  You could also try toggling Airplane mode on & off.   Again, some have had success doing this while others have not.

  • Safari opens by itself at login

Hi all, it's a few days that Safari started opening at login, before any other application, even before seeing the menubar. Furthermore, it's unresponsive so I have to force quit it.
I've tried deleting the safari prefs with no avail. Found this in the console log:

    Anybody can help?
    TIA

Same problem (again!). I thought everything was ok, when the problem reappeared. This time I'm pasting here the whole startup/login log. Sorry for the flood and thanks for your help.

  • Safari opens by itself

safari ones it´s star , open several pages at the same time

    Hi,
    Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:  Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
    Restart your Mac. Try Safari.

  • Safari Opening by Itself (in hidden mode)

Out of the blue, while working on various projects, Safari will open in hidden mode, which flips me to the desktop it is assigned to. It is not in the login items and the Lion option to restore windows when quitting/reopening apps is turned off. I have tried clearing Safari's cache and resetting to no avail. Any advise you can give to remedy this is much appreciated.

Try deleting the cache associated with Safari. Sometimes this does a better job then emptying the cache from the Safari GUI.
Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db. Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.appstore folder to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
For Lion:   To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library

  • Safari Opens NUMEROUS Windows Upon Running Program

Whenever I to open Safari, over 80 windows open immediately.  My homepages are two websties and I'll get probably 30 or so windows with my Home "pages" combination, and then another 50 of windows of sites I visted recently.  If I proceed to close the windows out, more open.
Any recommendations? Would reinstalling Safari work? Or does this look like a virus and should I just restore from my time machine backup? My most recent backup is roughly 1 week old and my external has not been connected since this began to happen.
It's worth noting this only happens to Safari--Firefox works perfectly fine. No other odd behaviors (ie. system lag, program crashes, etc.) have appeared.

Try un-checking the "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" option under the General pane of System Preferences and then opening Safari.    This disables the resume feature in lion.   It isn't a permanant soloution but it might help narrow down if the resume feature is responsible for this.
Edit: It might also be worth fiddiling around with the homepage settings such as setting it to only open blank pages in  new windows and new tabs instead of opening your chosen homepage and see if there is any problem there

  • Ios7. Safari opens with tabs i last visited, why?

    Hi there :-)
Can you please please please add a button at the safari preferences that allows us to choose if we want to open safari with the latest opened tabs or not?
IM searching a lot on the net and everytime Me is searching for something else, so it is pretty annoying everytime when i open safari that it opens with the latest tab(s)
Can you give us that choise?
I hope i could make myself clear in my best of the English language since i'm from Amsterdam.
    Kind regards.

It should not open with the most recent tabs.
    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
No data is lost due to a reset.
Sometimes force quitting an app can help also > iOS: Force an app to close

  • Lion OS X automatically opens excel/word upon start-up?

I recently upgraded to lion OS X  Seems now when I start up my iMac the MSOffice apps open automatically.  For instance when Excel opens the first pop up says cannot open file due to corrupt file or extension.  Is there a reset available for this?

This is likely to be OS X Lion's 'Resume' feature.
Firstly make sure that none of the MSOffice apps are open when you shutdown or restart and also deselect 'Reopen windows when logging back in' when this window is presented:
Also you could 'untick' this setting: System Preferences>General> 'Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps'.

  • Safari opens websites not using HTML formatting- Why?

Can anyone help? This is what happens on many websites - such that I no longer use Safari : http://screencast.com/t/cmh3eNvkva
    Safari gives me two problems:
    1. Not formatting sites correctly making them unusable
    2. Telling me that Site Certificates are untrusted (when they should be trusted - and are the correct sites)
I have tried everything I can think of - Clearing cashe - uninstalling and re-instaling Safari - upgrading Safari. Everything workd fine in Firefox - thank heaven.
But honestly, what's the point of a Browser - and a Mac one at that, which won't function properly?

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Why does safari re-open my last visited page instead of my homepage? I have the preferences set to always open to homepage in new tabs or windows or upon starting safaring.

Why does Safari open my last visited page?? I have gone into preferences and said to open to homepage when starting safaring or opening a new tab yet each time it opens to the last page I visited.

Hold down "shift" key and launch Safari
or hold down "option" key before quitting Safari to discard saved windows from previous session.
    Disable Resume feature.
    10.7 Lion
    System Preferences > General
Uncheck the box next to "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps".
    10.8 Mountain Lion
    System Prefernces > General
Chckmark the box next to "Close windows when quitting an application".

  • Safari opens with old tabs on start up

Safari keeps opening with old tabs from about 3 weeks ago rather than my home page. On start up safari is showing as open and there is a folder in the right hand part of the dock. This has the old tabs in it and safari opens with these and not my home page. I've seen other threads which advise to ensure preferences are set correctly etc but none of this has worked. All settings are for my home page to open and not previous windows. What confuses me is why these particular old tabs are opening. Any ideas how to get rid of them and for safari to start opening with my home page again. Thanks.

I have been experiencing the exact same issue as eddiethered for the past 2 weeks, I'm having 4 old browser tabs open everytime I launch Safari.  This is not an issue of a settings configuration, it is an issue of a bad .plist or cache from what I can tell.  Like eddiethered, I have ensured the following:
My default homepage is about:blank, so upon Safari launch nothing other than a blank page should appear.
It is not an issue of restarting the OS and having "Reopen windows when logging back in" checked off, when I restart I ALWAYS uncheck that - but in the past week the same apps seem to relaunch automatically when they shouldn't.
This is not an issue of previously closing vs quitting the Safari browser, I Command-Q all my apps when I am finished with them.  Even when I hard-quit Safari, the old 4 browser tabs/websites reappear.
This is not a issue of Login Items as I don't have a single application listed as a Login Item for my Username.
I've also noticed other apps having issues (iChat, Chrome).  As of now Firefox is the only browser that is launching without any issues.  Yes an OS reinstall could be an option but that is a substantial amount of effort I don't want to invest.  Due to the other apps having issues this may be an issue at the OS level and not Safari.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Safari (7.0.1) is non-responsive (spinning pinwheel) upon start up.  It will work in temp user account but not in my main user acct.  I tried reinstall via comman-r prompt on start up but the problem persists.  Any suggestion for reinstall or repair?

Safari is non-responsive after intitial start up.  Before it can load the homepage (google), it will hang and give a perpetual pinwheel until I force quit the program.  Safari works in temporary user account but not in my primary user account.  I have reinstalled osx via the command-r upon start up and the problem still persists.  Any suggestions on how to reinstall or repair safari?

Thanks for thinking about my problem. I've already experimented with creating a new user, a co-administrator. The programs don't crash when that account is running, just as they don't crash when the guest-user's account runs. So it seems that the problem is limited to the default user's account, which is the one that was running when I installed the updates to the OS and the firmware. Another clue is that the programs that crash as soon as they are launched are *probably* the ones that were open at that time in that account. Yet deleting Saved Application States does not keep the programs from crashing when next launched.
So the mystery continues, but these additional facts will help with the diagnosis, I hope.
    Thanks again for your suggestion.
