Safari opens downloads in new tab instead of saving files

Whenever I click a download link in Safari (or Camino, or Firefox), the browser opens a new tab as if to open a web page. There is no apparent way to force the browser to save the file. This is a problem specific to my work Mac; my home Mac exhibits no such strange behavior.
Please help! Thanks.

Hi Chris
Usually download problems across browsers points to the presence of a 3rd party download accelerator installed in your system.
Do you have a trial version of Speed Download or iGetter? You would find Speed Download folder in your Applications folder. Inside there is an Uninstaller.
Also, look in HD>Library>InputManagers folder. iGetter or Speed Download bundle would be there.
If you have either, uninstall Speed Download to remove all its component parts. If you don't have SD in the Applications folder, but the bundle is in InputManagers, simply drag the bundle to the trash.
iGetter - simply drag the bundle to the trash.
Restart Safari or any other browser for the change to take effect.

  • How to get pages to open in a 'New Tab' instead of a 'New Page'

    Hi there,
I know how to get the pages of my iWeb created site to open as a 'New Page' by using the Inspector. What I want to do however, is to get them to open as a 'New Tab' instead.
I want to do this because I have several pages that open as a 'New Page' and it litters the screen with Safari pages. So instead of a 'New Page', I want them to open as a 'New Tab' within the one Safari window.
This is what I want to happen:
    1: user clicks on link
2: link opens a new Tab
3: Safari switches to the new Tab and makes it the active Tab.
Can someone please tell me how to get this to happen. Just ot be totally clear: I am aware that I can alter [MY] Safari settings to do this on my own Mac. But I want it to happen as default for everyone who visits my site and clicks on the corresponding links.
My site is published to MobileMe

    Window 7.
    Safari.
    Where is iWeb involved?
Right-click > open link in new tab.
Works with all webpages, not only iWeb ones.
And if it drives you crazy, you may want to seek professional help with medication.

  • Safari opens links in new tabs, or in pre-existing tabs without giving me the option of opening the link in the same tab.

Safari opens links in new tabs, or in pre-existing tabs without giving me the option of opening the link in the same tab.
This has never happened before. Normally I would right-click and select open in new tab. How do I fix it? It's really frustrating.

    Safari > Preferences > Tabs
"Open pages in tabs instead of windows:"
Click the box for drop down.
You have three choices, Never, Automatically and Always.
    Pick  your choice.

  • How can I force a popup to open in a new tab instead of opening a new window?

I want to keep any links that I click from opening a new window, ie. if I click on a link in an open tab that opens a new window, I want it to open in a new tab instead. I am on Firefox 5.0.

You can look at the browser.link.open_newwindow prefs on the about:config page.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction (0)
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow (3)
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

  • How do I get Google search bar results to open in a new tab instead of the current tab?

When I use the Google search box, I would like the search results to open in a new tab instead of the current tab.

It turns out there is an about:config setting just for this purpose. Toggle browser.search.openintab to 'true', and all is well.

  • Safari open link in new tab problem

Safari opens links in same tab when it should open each link in a new tab.

When I browse, click on a link, the page opens in the tab I am viewing and also a new tab (about 75% of the time).
If I select automatically, Safari will selectively open the link in the same page and a new tab at the same time, or sometimes just open a new tab.
    What's up, Safari 6?
How can I fix this annoying behavior?

I pulled the plist to the trash, reset Safari, restarted. Everything seems to be working as it should. I'm guessing this was some sort of preference or cache corruption. If the weird behavior returns, I'll report back.

  • Safari open link in new tab is gone

-.the short menu adressing open link in new tab is not at all appearing , at present i m using on keyboard options
-when i enter webpage it opens in the other tab instead of the tab i intend to ,the content from other tab becomes the same as the other, also some of ther options from short menu lke save image , save image as also lost .
-when i reset safari and restart open link in new tab appears in the short menu for 5-10 min (occassionally) and then again the same problem .
i tried setting preferences , updated software ,
but nothing works. .can anyone help me plz

Check Safari / Preferences then select the Extensions tab. If you have any installed, turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
And try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file  (preferences)
    Quit Safari.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari. If that made a difference, move that .plist file to the Trash. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder.
And try resetting Safari. From the menu bar click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset.

  • How do I get Firefox to open in a new tab (instead of a new window) when I click on one of my buttons in my toolbar?

When I click on one of my buttons in the toolbar, Firefox opens that button in a new window. I would like to be able to click on one of my buttons and Firefox open it in a new tab instead.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== When I attempt to click on a button

Right click the FireFox button in your toolbar and look in the properties- middle tab...make sure that it only has "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" with no other link added to the end. I had a similar problem this morning and found a website had attached it's link to the end so it would always pop up first and would only open a new tab.
    Hope that fixed it.

  • How do I get my hotmail to open in a new tab instead of a new window and I've tried the middle click/ctlr option.

MSN is my home page and when I click on the hotmail link in the top left hand corner of the page it always opens in a new window even if I press middle-click/ ctrl keys. The hotmail link is the only link that I have had this problem with thus far. Can you help me correct this problem?

Hotmail opens in a new window because the code or set of instructions on the MSN website tells Firefox to open Hotmail in a new window. I would suggest you right click on the Hotmail button and left click on "Open Link in New Tab". This will open a new tab in the current window.

  • How do I get all hyperlinks to open in a new tab instead of redirecting the open page?

Simply put, when I hit a hyperlink I do NOT want the page I'm on to go to the linked URL -- I want the new URL to appear in a new and separate tab. FF used to do this just fine -- until I "upgraded" to 5.0.1 yesterday.
Between this and the smaller screen size for the FF browser I'm thinking of jumping ship back to Chrome...
    HELP!
    Thanks in advance...

Hotmail opens in a new window because the code or set of instructions on the MSN website tells Firefox to open Hotmail in a new window. I would suggest you right click on the Hotmail button and left click on "Open Link in New Tab". This will open a new tab in the current window.

  • When I open a new URL I want it to open in a new tab instead of replacing the last tab in line.

When I have several tabs open and I open a new URL the new URL replaces the last tab on my bar. I would just like for the new URL to open in a new tab.

Did you have the Google Toolbar installed?

  • Every time I click a link, it opens in a new tab instead of the existing one.

Whenever I left click on any link, Firefox opens the link in a new tab. Previously it would only open a link in a new tab if I either middle clicked, or right clicked and specifically selected 'Open Link in New Tab.'

This may be because the site is instructing the browser to open them in a new tab (I know, it's a big usability issue, but the web is still young...). Can you try it on other browsers and see what happens? If the same happens, yes, it's probably the site that's telling the browser to open the link in another tab.
If you want to eliminate that behavior, and be in full control of where the links open (middle click to open in new tab, left click to open in the same tab - as it ''should'' be), I suggest you install an extension like [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/1122/ Tab Mix Plus], which, among other things (many things, it's an absolutely phenomenal extension) will let you configure "links that open in a new window" to open on the current tab.

  • How can I set pdfs to open in a new tab instead of prompting firefox to open them in Adobe itself?

I use a website with many links to pdfs. In Windows XP (probably an older version of firefox) I could right click on the link to open a new tab, and the pdf would open in the new tab. In Windows 7 (and updated firefox) when I right click to open a new tab, a new blank tab opens and Adobe starts up displaying the document in a new Adobe window. How can I change the settings to have pdfs open within the new tab (without opening Adobe)?

Tools -> Options -> Applications Tab
    Under Content Type find Adobe
Under Action, Left click and select "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)"
    That should do it!

  • Force open images in new tab instead of downloading it.

Some webpages force download of images either with change of the image mime type or (I think) with javascript.
Is there any way to force all jpg/png/gif files to open in new tab when given a direct link to it.

Sounds that you have previously set an automatic download action for the application/force-download MIME type.

  • Safari 5 opens links in new tab instead of new window

So how can I go back to "normal"? Tried with
defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool false
but Safari still opens them in a new tab.
    Thanks

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences and select Tabs from the Menu. Perhaps your settings changed after the update.
Also, if you didn't repair disk permissions after the Safari 5 update, it would be beneficial to do that.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
