Safari opens slowly OS X 10.7.5
When opening my computer, with Safari already started, I get the spinning beachball.
I am on a Macbook Pro running 10.7.5 and Safari 6.0.5.
If anyone has any ideas, help would be greatly appreciated.
Try deleting the Safari cache ...
Press Command + Option + E on your keyboard.
Quit and relaunch Safari.
If that didn't help, from the menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari
Select only the top six boxes then click Reset.
Quit and relaunch Safari.

Try moving /Users/YourUsername/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist onto your Desktop and then relaunching Safari.
If that works it means the file is corrupt and you can delete it. -
My programs are opening slowly, how do I get them to open quicker?
I have a Mac Pro 2 Ghz PowerPC Gr running OS 10.5.8. I have been having difficulty with programs opening very slowly including Safari and Word which I use most frequently. I have used ONYX to try to speed things up, have cleared the cache in Safari and it still seems to be slow responding when opening or closing programs. What can I do to speed things up?? Thanks a lot!
How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click your MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop then click: Get Info
In the Get Info panel see: Capacity & Available.
Make sure there's a minimum of 15% disk space.
very slowly including Safari
From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab. Deselect: Enable plug ins Quit then relaunch Safari. If Safari opens faster, troubleshooting help here. Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that off, quit, relaunch Safari.
Quit Safari. Open a Finder window select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the Library folder, then the Caches folder, then the com.apple.Safari folder. Move the cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash. Relaunch Safari.
Check for Login Items: Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab. Delete any files or apps you have listed there. And go to /Library/Startup Items. Move any files in the Startup Items folder to the Trash.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset.
Try Safari in another user account. Same problems there, then log back into your admin account, launch Disk Utility. /Applications/Utillities.
Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions). If the startup disk needs repairing, follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks

My MacBook Pro is slow, only safari open
It is 2 years old. 2.26GHz, 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3. Not sure what to do? I only have safari open., My MacBook Pro is slow It is 2 years old. 2.26GHz, 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3. Not sure what to do? I only have safari open, and it will freeze or the spinning rainbow wheel will come up for a long time. Or sometimes it shows that I am scrolling over something a good 5-10 seconds after I already have. Sometimes when I am typing, the letters appear later than when i have typed them. I am not sure what to do. Oh, and my security software is clean and up to date!
I have 85.22 GB of my 148.73 GB capacity available. I feel like it shouldn't be running this slowly!
Please Help!!Boot up from your install DVD and run "Repair Disk" from the Utility menu. When done, restart back to your desktop, repair permissions and restart your computer.

Using multiple desktops with a 4 finger swipe on a Mac Book Pro running Lion- is there a way that I can allow Safari open on several but not all?? Looks like I can set it for one but not others. All, one, or nothing
Hey Eric,
Thanks for taking the time. Unfortunately no that does not solve it. Same as swipe it will get me there and it will show separate programs spaced out. The issue I am having is that all my open word files are bunched up in a pile on top of each other. I can see the edges of each one but I want them to be separated from each other enough that I can visually identify what file is what.
Again, thanks for trying, it is appreciated. -
Safari opens to a page other than what I've defined in Preferences
This has me stumped...
I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.4. When I open Safari (6.0.5), it does not open the homepage (Google). Instead, it automatically opens another website (http://pregnant.thebump.com/pregnancy-week-by-week/25-weeks-pregnant.aspx?MsdVis it=1). However, if I click the Home button on the browser, it does go to my homepage. This happens every time Safari is opened, regardless of the last page or tabs that were open the last time Safari was closed. This only happens with my wife's user, and only in Safari. It does not occur if I open Chrome as her user. Things I've tried...
Resetting the homepage preferences in Safari / Preferences.
When I go to Safari / Extensions, there are no extensions listed. When I go to home folder / Library / Internet Plugins, the only one in there is Picasa.plugin. I tried moving it to the desktop, resetting Safari, closing Safari, and the problem still exists when I open Safari back up.
I tried something similar with the Mac HD / Library / Internet Plugins folder. Took them all to the desktop, reset Safari, closed Safari, opened Safari. Problem still exists.
I've tried the Devolop / Empty Caches menu item. I've tried “sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder” in Terminal to reset the DNS.
The only thing that seems to work is when I hold Shift as I open Safari. Only if I do that does it correctly go to the homepage. I'm out of ideas. Help?Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.Safari.savedState
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash. Relaunch the application and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. -

Memory Used at 4.22GB with just Safari open... Help!
Hi there,
I have a 2013 MacBook Pro Retina, 16GB RAM. I have been having difficulties recently determining why I keep running out of memory - then I checked my Activity Monitor and it appears 4 or so gigabytes of my memory is being used with only Safari open! Is there anything I can do to find the source of this and stop it?

Any help/advice would be much appreciated! Thanks! As OGELTHORPE stated you do not have a RAM issue. Safari opening linked .zip files directly from DVD instead of downloading
Dear all,
Safari opening linked .zip files directly from DVD (via Windows explorer) instead of downloading it tru browser click - it's working just fine in FF, Chrome IE. Is this a known issue? or something can be done by modifying browser setting/pref.
Expecting more advise on this.
Configurations: Windows XP
Safari: 5.1.7
Note: ensured there is no space in the file path, just linked the .zip file using href attribute!
Also tried with .xls, .doc insted of .zip same issue appearing.
Thanks in advance,
ThirilogHi
appzapper & such are pretty flaky at removing things usefully, imo.
Use the uninstaller for speed download - http://www.yazsoft.com/products/speed-download/faqs/?how-to-un-install-speed-dow nload-properly
or get a hold of FindAnyFile or easyfind & search for Growl & Speeddownload & yazsoft - but from all I hear, the uninstaller works fine.
Failing that, Safari's settings plist file isn't in caches
Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist
is the place
& if you're still stuck, test & maybe download another browser using a New User Account. -
Make Safari open PDF in preview automatically, by default
Is there any way I can make Safari open (download + view) PDF links in Preview?
I know that Safari opens PDFs in its own viewer, and then I can use the semi-opaque 4-button toolbar at the bottom of the window (when the toolbar is visible) to Open PDF in Preview, but that's a fair bit of extra work from a UI perspective.
I click the link to the PDF, and the PDF opens in a new Safari window.
I move the mouse to the bottom of the page, wait for the gray toolbar to appear, then click the Open PDF in Preview.
(This is assuming the toolbar shows itself, which for some reason it has stopped doing on some PDFs.)
Now I've got a Preview window with my document, plus the useless Safari PDF view, plus my original webpage.
It's tedious and cumbersome.
Yes I know I could option-click the PDF link to automatically download the file, but that doesn't automatically open the file after it is downloaded. Either way I have to mess around to open the file as I'd like to.Right-click on the PDF document; select Get Info from the pop-up menu; in the lower half is a section labeled Open With. Select Preview from the choices listed, then click Change All... to make Preview the default appp for PDF documents.

How can I make it so that when Safari opens it takes me to the homepage?
Say I am on youtube and I quit safari, when I reopen safari later, it goes to the page last open, in this case, youtube. How can I make it so that when Safari opens it always takes me to the homepage?
Click on the red button (top left) to close the window before quitting.

Safari 7.0.4. Couldn't find option "Safari opens with:"
I'm using Safari 7.0.4. Couldn't find option "Safari opens with:". I want to enable all my tabs and windows to be restored where I left off when I quit Safari. I can see that option in my iMac which is running at same version level.
It should happen automatically, unless you checked the box marked Close all windows when quitting an application in the General pane of System Preferences.

Clicking on External Link in Safari Opens New Tab
I think it has to do with one of the preferences I've set within Safari but I just can't put a finger on which one.
Basically, I reinstalled Yosemite 10.10.3 on my MacBook Pro 13" (Late 2013) about a week ago. And then I tinkered with Safari preferences.
Since then, whenever I click on an external link, for example, an email address, Safari opens a New Tab instead of launching my Mail app.
Not sure how to do undo this. From the Mail menu bar, select
Mail ▹ Preferences... ▹ General ▹ Default email reader: Mail
If you don't use Mail, you may be able to set the preference in the mail client you do use. -
My school has a website. The professor uploads files in Word. When I click on the link at home using Pages, the download window opens with nothing in it and Safari opens with a blank in the address book. What Could be wrong? Wrong set up?
Hi Jo,
If I'm interpreting this correctly, the Word file downloads correctly, but when you open it in Pages, the link(s) which your instructor has embedded in the Word file are not correctly translated into Pages.
If the link shows the actual address, you should be able to copy that and paste it into the location bar in Safari, press return, and get to the website that way.
An alternate route might be to download one of the open source Office applications, OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice, or NeoOffice. These are written to more closely emulate the behaviours of MS Word than Pages, and may provide better support for links embedded in Word files.

Barry
