Safari & PDFs

I am unable to read PDFs in Safari. I have Adobe installed, however, it comes up as "grey" and I cannot click on it to read the file. If I try to open a PDF, it just has the circular object rotating and a blank screen. What am I missing here? I know it's not that difficult!
Went to the Apple Store and was told to move Adobe to "Applications", however that did nothing.

Quit Safari and start Adobe Reader. Do you get a message saying that something is missing and would you like Adobe to repair it? Usually, you should have Adobe PDFViewer.plugin in the Internet Plug-Ins folder.

Why won't Adobe reader no longer let me view previously download (from Safari) pdf's? I am running OSX 10.8.5 and have uninstalled and reinstalled latest version of Reader. I get this error message "Adobe Reader could not open 'OD Test Bed Proposals_0.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)."  I have tried changing the 'open with' options too. Thanks

    Try this:
    Go to: Mac HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins
Trash the AdobePDFViewer.plugin and AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin files
    Empty the trash
Relaunch Safari. You can now download undamaged PDFs.

  • Acrobat hijacked Safari PDF's

All PDF's are shown by the Acrobat Reader plug-in. There is a preference in Acrobat Reader 7.0.5 (Prefs/Internet/Dispay PDF is browser using). Unchecking this does NOT stick. Next time I open Acrobat or even enter Preferences, the checkbox is set again. Is there a way to stop Acrobat from taking over Safari PDF's?
    best regards
    Lars

    Lars,
    Quit Safari.
Find and remove the AdobePDFViewer.plugin and archive it into a different folder. It will be located in either: Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins or ~Library/Internet Plug-Ins.
    Restart Safari.

In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin
If a Finder window open with that item selected, delete it, then quit and relaunch Safari. Otherwise post again.

  • Adobe PDF writer has taken over my computer for documents, how do I change it back to Safari PDF ?

How do I change back to Safari PDF viewer and get rid of Adobe?

Find a PDF file in the Finder, select it and go File > Get Info. Find the Open With section and change the application from Adobe Reader (?) to whatever other PDF viewing app you prefer (Safari.app?). Click on the button that activates in that section (Change All...) and say Yes to making every PDF open with the new option your choose.
In my opinion, viewing PDFs posted on websites in Safari is fine, but viewing PDFs downloaded or that reside on your iMac are better suited to being viewed using Adobe Reader (though you might not be used to what it does), or Preview. You should explore what they have to offer.
    Hope this helps.

  • Safari PDF viewer

I download a lot of pdfs. But I don't want to view them in the pdf viewer contained within Safari. Is there any way to turn off the safari pdf viewer so that when I click on a link to download the pdf, it will download it to the folder that I specified?
    thanks, Anthony

What I forgot to mention is that control-click does not work. These pdfs are from science journals that are liscenced to the institution I am at. When I control click it, it downloads something that has the extension .htm and when I click on this, it takes me directly to the web page to view the pdf in the viewer. I just don't like the hasel of opening the pdf in the viewer then saving the pdf to a folder on my computer. Before the viewer was installed in Safari, I used just click on the link and it would download it to wherever I wanted. I was just hoping there was some way to turn "off" the pdf viewer.
    thanks, Anthony

  • HT1338 safari pdf file open error

    Dear. Sir
I have recently downloaded Adobe Reader X, new version. I don't have any problem with this application when I open the stored pdf file in my mac.
However, it has serious problem with opening a new pdf file on safari.
When I download pdf files, the pdf document shows as a black....!!! (No respond at all from Safari)
    Please help me out
    Yours faithfully
    Euna Noh

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Opening Safari pdf documents automatically in Preview

With Lion, Safari opens pdf documents in a Safari tab by default (as it did in OS X 10.6).  I want pdfs to open automatically in Preview (or Acrobat depending on what I have set as the default pdf reader) without having to Cmd-Click/Open in Preview.  This was possible in 10.6 by disabling an adobe plugin.  Is there now an option for opening pdf documents in Preview by default, rather than in a Safari tab?

Also these documents are protected from Saving and Printing.
You can't protect PDF documents from saving.

  • Why does the Safari PDF viewer plugin show up in mission control?

Whenever I swipe to activate mission control the PDF viewer plugin of Safari shows. This obviously doesn't happen if I do not have a tab with a PDF active in the browser, but why does it show anyway? I have tested Firefox and Chrome and their PDF plugins do not show in the mission control view, so why does Safari's? How can I get rid of this? It makes loading expose' view a little choppy (compared to when I dont have to use a PDF in Safari) and looks weird. I have attached an image of how this looks.

deleting the adobe plugins in Library worked for me:

  • Safari: PDF single page flip/scroll does not work

In previous versions, you could open a PDF file in safari, then right click on the PDF, choose the "Single Page" scroll option - and you could flip from full page to the next full page with just an elegant and simple scrollwheel swipe on the magic mouse.
Upgrade to mountain lion: And this convenient feature is botched. It just doesn't work - give it a try. Now, the page will wiggle, but won't flip, unless you also move the mouse to a different pointer position. So in order to scroll through a 100-page-PDF in Safari, as opposed to elegant slides down your magic mouse with your middle finger, you are now forced to work like a madman, simultaneously wiggling your mouse as you middle-finger swipe the scrollwheel !
Not only does that make you look like a complete moron, it also is annoying, takes you eight times the time, delays the process, sometimes still doesn't work, and is just plain idiocy.
Why this change would have been implemented - I have no idea. But one thing is clear: We need a solution to fix this, I can't downgrade my OS, and I am loosing a lot of time each and every day!
Anyone with a solution: Step forward, please!
    Thanks,
    Me.

  • Fill PDF Forms with Safari -PDF Formulare mit Safari ausfüllen

I have to fill out a PDF form (http://www.experiment-ev.de/sites/default/files/vertrauliches_gutachten_0.pdf). Multiline fields can be completed. Individual fields remain filled invisible. They are only visible if they are active. How do I make it always visible?
I use Safari and Preview. I would not use Adobe Reader!

    Lisa,

  • Opening Safari PDFs in Acrobat

I used to have Safari set to open PDFs in Acrobat. Since updating Safari (5.1) and Lion, all PDFs in Safari open in a new Safari tab.
I used to click on a link to a PDF in Safari, the document would automatically download to my mac, and automatically open in Acrobat. (Not right click or control click, just a regular click on the link.) Since I've upgraded to Safari 5.1 & Lion, a link to a PDF in Safari opens another tab in Safari and the PDF appears there.
I don't want the PDF in a Safari tab; I want the PDF to download and open directly in Acrobat like it used to. I know there was a setting I originally had to change for this behavior. But, I can't remember where the setting was and I can't find anything in Safari preferences or System preferences related to this.
It's possible that this option changed with Safari 5.1 and/or Lion andnow PDFs online only open in Safari, but I don't know; that's what I'm trying to figure out. I'm not using Acrobat Reader, I have a full version of Acrobat. I also checked in /Library/Internet Plug-ins and I don't have either a PDF Browser Plug-in or an Adobe plug in, so those shouldn't be causing the problem.
    Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Sheri

    Hi Sheri
Safari 5.1 now natively supports PDF files, rather than depending upon plug ins from Adobe.  Opening PDFs within the browser is also now Safari's default and currently only way of displaying PDFs.  In the past, you could use tools like TinkerTool or Cocktail to amend this behaviour, but they don't currently appear to work with Safari 5.1.
So you have a choice.  Click on a link to display a PDF in the browser.  With the PDF visible, move your mouse towards the bottom the browser window.  As you get close to the bottom a grey box will appear with 4 options: Zoom in, Zoom out, Display in Preview, Download.  I'll leave you to guess which one will download the PDF for you.
The other option available to you is to right-click on a PDF link and select Download linked file from the menu that appears.
I reckon we just need to wait for Adobe and others to update their plug-ins to reinstate the automatic download of PDFs.

  • In i-Pad's Safari PDF opens in same tab

Hi friends.. In i-Pad's safari browser I want to open PDF in another tab.. right now it's opening in same tab.. Is there any setting for this..?? and one more I am using button for generating PDF..
Also in our application we havent provided the functionality on Back arrow.. means when User clicks on Back option, it should navigate to previous page.. But this is not there in our application..  So I want to open PDF externally.
So Is there any suggestion for this..???

Click here and follow the instructions, or if there’s a type of adware not covered by them on the computer, these ones. If you're willing to use a tool to remove it(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.

  • Safari, PDF's and Adobe Reader

Is there a way of having Safari 5.1 open all PDF's in Adobe Reader?  I get my bank statements opened in adobe reader (and some other files as well) but others open in something I can't figure out with some options that appears if I move the mouse over the bottom of the page.  One of the options is to have the file open in preview.  When I click that option it opens in Adobe reader!  Can anyone help me figure this out?

Thanks for the info, I guess I can't do anything about it until Adobe does.  However, out of curiosity, can you tell me why when I open some pdf"s it immediatley downloads in Adobe reader and others don't.  Example, my bank statements open in reader and some pdf's from a college site opens in something other with option of opening in preview, however, when I use that option i it opens in adobe reader on my desktop!!!

  • Safari PDF download is suddenly very slow

I recently updated my Acrobat Reader to version 8 - which seemed to work wonderfully in Safari (v2.0.4). Starting this week, March 4th, my Safari browser takes severely longer to open PDF files - many times taking so long that I'm forced to Force Quit out of Safari.
I have no idea of what changed - but something must have changed.
    Any ideas?
