Safari: Pictures appear too dark

In Safari 8.0 on OS X 10.10.1 often the pics on a page are shown darker as in other browsers.
These pics compare Safari and Firefox 33.1.
Why is that?

  • Exported black/white pictures are too dark

    Hi,
My exported black and white pictures are too dark. I checked the pictures and the exif info contains information about the color profile RGB and sRGB (see below), but still the browsers (firefox and safari) ignore this and display the pictures way to dark. Is there a way to fix this? firefox has color management enabled and safari probably too. As for firefox: there are probably users that do not have color management enabled and it should work for them as well.
Could the problems be due to the reduced 8bit color depth of jpeg?
    Any suggestions are highly welcome.
    Thanks!

Doesn't this include the profile? I use Metadata wrangler and creative commons and morgify as plugins, but these shouldn't interfere with the profile, should they? I also experimented with disabling the metadata wrangler (by clicking disable), but this did not have any effect.

  • Printed pictures are too dark

My pictures printed from Iphoto 5 are too dark, I have tried my home printer, kodak, and Fuji. The results are the identical. However, when I import the same pictures in Photoshop CS they print just fine.
I am now having the Aperture 2.1.1 "trial" and i have the same exact problem with my home printer. In addition, some of the pictures (not all of them)are not sharp, they seem out of focus. I have exported the same pictures to my desktop and printed them with "Graphic Converter". The pictures are much better, but i still get a few which seem to be out of focus. I then took the same desktop images and used Photoshop Elements 6 ( also on trial)to print them. Photoshop is printing the pictures correctly (photoshop elements 6 does not have a printing profile for Mac's and the printing is managed by the printer's HP software). I must be missing a printer setting when using the Apple programs. My Aperture colorsync setting is set to "HP D7300 premium plus".I have a 1.8 Ghz G5, OSX 10.4.11, and an HP D7360 printer. Can anyone give me an idea of what i am doing wrong?

    Hello Donna,
    I use the printer settings:
    roll paper
    premium semigloss photo paper /250)
    color: color
advanced settings: 1440dpi with no other boxes checked
    I turn off color management
in LR the Profile I made for this special paper/printer is selected.
It's the latest 9800 printer driver, downloaded just a few days ago.
I came across the endless threads on maybe the same subject only some hours ago. (
Sean McCormack, "Printing Problems in Lightroom" #70, 26 Feb 2007 6:19 pm) Tried the trick with chosing the 9800 as default printer, but it didn't help. The printer settings tell me the profile used is: *systemstandard* (that's german: some sort of default (standard) of the system. Maybe it's the same as the "generic RGB profile" mentioned, but I'm not sure.
I also print from LR on a G5 to an Epson Stylus Pro 3800 via USB with absolutely no problems.
Here I want to print from Lightroom on an Intel Duo Core to a networked printer, the 9800.
I'd LOVE first of all to get a somehow *canonical* statement that printing on a networked printer from Lightroom is possible, Yes or No. (As I said before, it is no problem from PS CS3)
If the common experience is, that one cannot print from LR to a networked (Epson pro) printer, then I'll surely not go on reading tons of discussions to find the needle in the hay.
@ Donna: I'd be very grateful for any suggestions!
@ Andreas: certainly the printer driver on the networked Mac G4 the Epson 9800 is attached to is older than the one on my Intel Mac. Is that what you mean? I'll try to fix that.
@ dyp: the profile shown in the printer setting is: *systemstandard* (system default, in german). Looked up Color Sync in the library, I find the profiles folder, but nothing to chose any profile as my default. Where do you do that in Color Sync?
Thank you all a lot for helping!

  • Pictures upload too dark?

Well, every time I make something on my Photoshop Elements 4.0, the colors look exactly how I want them on the program itself. But whenever I attempt to upload them anywhere on the web, the colors appear MUCH too dark. So, to remedy I figured I would send them to MSPaint, but then when I uplaod them from a file saved on there, the colors come out much to light. I have no idea what's going on! Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I should do?

Could you explain how are you trying to upload photos to the web using PSE4 ?

  • Key scenes on DVD appear too dark!

I've recently finished a project in which many of the poorly lit but viewable scenes from a wedding appear way darker than on the Mac screen or the cam itself. Having read through the forums I now realise that the Imovie rendering/process to IDvd can lose 10-15% of the brightness (i think that was the quote?) Anyone got any ideas for a work around other than redoing it (or them) in Final Cut, which would be a nightmare! (Does everyone agree that ImovieHD's brightness effect is useless? Are there custom plugin's that are any better?)
    Found this quote below....from http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3189924&#3189924
"This is a by-product of the way the compression works. There are other DVD authoring tools that I have read provide better results in poorly lit scenes but these will start at several hundred dollars."
What are they? Is this really true?
    Thanks in advance.....

The best thing you can do is hook at least an inexpensive TV to the output on your camera so you get an idea of how it looks on a TV while you edit. Depending on your monitor calibration, it is quite possible that an image is darker on your computer screen than on a TV. Of course the better the NTSC monitor (the TV), the more accurate everything will be. I don't know of any iMovie plug-ins, but when clients bring me reception video from say a Canon camera that has a 7 lux rating (very poor in low light), I apply a gamma "filter" in FC to make the scene appear brighter. Maybe there is some sort of gamma plug-in for iMovie?
As far as better encoding software, I would look at Mpressionist, http://www.digigami.com/products.html. I hear it's the best. Others prefer BitVice, http://www.innobits.se/.
And hardware encoders are coming down in price as well... within the range of us mere mortals: http://www.optibase.com/Content.aspx?id=79 which probably yields the best results.
All that said, if you are looking for more professional results, you will need some sort of infrastructure to achieve them. What I mean by that is right now you don't know if the scenes are darker only on your computer monitor or if they are darker on an NTSC monitor. I can say that LCD camera screens tend to be far brighter than the "real" image recorded. And finally, the only way to be sure of anything is to use hardware scopes!

  • Why is my video appearing too dark on FCP?

I just shot a video with a Canon XA10, using the "Night scene" setting. The footage looked dark, but I could still see the images on the screen. (It looked as dark as I wanted it to)  Now, I'm logging and transferring, and the preview window is close to black.
On my camera's viewfinder, it looks great! Is there a setting in Final Cut Pro's Logging and Transferring that is off?
-All my other footage looks normal, Just sequences attempting to be dark, come out different
    -Its a AVCHD camera
    Thanks!

Camera viewfinders are notorious for displaying an inaccurate image. They are often set to show a "bright" more vibrant image.
Equally, FCP shows you a proxy image intended to deal with composition and action. And the third variable is - who knows how well your computer monitor is adjusted?
The only real way to see what you have recorded is to view it on an external TV monitor being fed a TV signal. To do this, you need a qualified i/o device (from Matrox, AJA, Decklink) to convert the FCP output signal then feed it to a properly adjusted TV.
Anything else is just guesswork. Really.

  • Safari Toolbar Still Too Dark

Leopard 10.5.2 did not correct the shade and density of the toolbar. Does anyone have suggestions or solutions to lighten the shade? Perhaps a 3rd party app?
    bolobar

    Hi bolobar,
Welcome to Discussions. It's no guarantee, but I remember SafariStand used to allow you to toggle the shade of the unified window. As it depended heavily on SIMBL, I'm not sure how its implementation has been altered with the advent of Leopard.

  • Pictures too dark - not a monitor calibration problem

I believe this is some kind of color space or EXIF data issue I'm having. The jist of it is this: if I view one of my pictures (they're in jpg format) in Windows Explorer, they look fine. But when Lightroom opens the picture or displays it in the library, it looks too dark. (Important note: this is not a monitor calibration issue. Searching on Google reveals tons of advice along these lines, but that's not what's happening here. Lightroom is simply displaying things differently than anything else.)
Photoshop had this problem also, but Adobe supplied a patch that made Photoshop ignore the color space EXIF data so my pictures would display "correctly". There does not seem to be any such equivalent fix for Lightroom. I'm using Windows XP - perhaps there's something I can do in the OS to fix this issue? I believe most of my pictures are sRGB.
How do I get Lightroom to display my pictures correctly? They are, of course, impossible to edit while they display like this. Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks for the responses. I freely admit I don't understand color management. I also admit I have not calibrated my monitor. I know, therefore, that my colors are not perfectly synchronized across all my devices - and I'm fine with that for the moment, because they are close enough. What comes out of my camera, what is displayed on my monitor, and what comes out of my printer are all pretty close. I will calibrate soon and get even closer, but for now perfect color isn't my chief concern.
My problem is not that the colors don't match, it's that the pictures are too dark when displayed in Lightroom. By "too dark", I mean several stops of exposure too dark. A picture will display a certain way on my camera and in Windows, and the histogram reflects this. Then I load it into Lightroom, and while the histogram looks the same of course, the picture itself is being displayed like I took it at night. Hence, as far as I can tell, it's not a monitor calibration issue. If I were to calibrate the monitor to display the pictures in Lightroom correctly, everything else would look too bright, wouldn't it? Including Lightroom itself. Besides, it wouldn't be possible to brighten my monitor to the point that the pictures looked acceptable - that's how dark they are.
Here's another clue: if I'm at work, and I RDP to my PC at home, and open Lightroom in the RDP session, everything looks great. So, I'm thinking it's a Windows color space issue of some kind. The question is, since I admit I don't know much about color space, what might be the problem and how might I fix it?
So to summarize: incorrect color calibration isn't my problem (though I know it's something I have to do if I ever want to perfectly match output on my monitor and printer). The colors across all my devices are close enough for my purposes. Incorrect color isn't my problem at all. The problem is that Lightroom on my PC displays pictures as if most of the histogram was on the left, even when that's not the case. The pictures in Lightroom look nothing like they look on my camera, in Windows Explorer, or when printed on my printer. Why is that, and what can I do to fix it? Thanks.

    Hi folks,
Just wondering if there is a way to change the bookmark background "dark" grey to a lighter grey (similar to google Chrome). On my Macbook, the current setting appears too dark. I would like to adjust it to my taste. Is there a tool to do this ?
    Regards,

    HI,
I don't thing there's a way to change the Safari GUI (graphic user interface).
    Open System Preferences/Displays
Check your Brightness settings. Make sure the Brightness slider is all the way to the right.
Open System Preferences/Universal Access then select the Seeing tab.
Under Display; Move the slider next to: Enhance Contrast That may help.

  • Rented movies are too dark

As I'm typing this I'm watching Gran Turino on my TV from my iPod classic. But the movie picture is too dark. I can't see any of the faces of the actors. I turned my TV brightness all the way up and it doesn't help. Is there a setting on my iPod to fix this? I've had this same problem on others movies in the past. I just can't seem to brighten them up. Thanks in advance!

I've been trying the tip given by the above poster. I have looked through my whole iPod and I can not find what they are talking about. When I double click the center wheel it comes up with a progress bar for the movie and nothing to adjust the brightness.
    Any other ideas?

  • IPhoto too dark, Preview & Mail OK

Recently all my photos appear too dark when I 'magnify' them (double-click) or try to edit them in iPhoto '08. However, when I export them from iPhoto and open them in Preview or send them to Mail with iPhoto they appear fine. (The iPhoto thumbnails also appear fine even when I use the slider to enlarge them in iPhoto.)
    Thanks for your suggestions.

Try this simple fix: trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Video Playback general too dark on the Z10

Maybe, if I would sit in a completely dark room, it might look good, but under normal conditions if you playback a video stream on the Z10, the picture is too dark. Hard to watch if it is not a news broadcast. Anything like a movie is IMHO not unusable. Even, with the backlit set to 100%
I compared this to a 9700, same stream, backlit set to 10%. and, this is (besides the small screen of the 9700) a lot better.

I do have mine set at 100 % as well.  It is ok for everything including youtube videos.   I am inside all day but I could see there being an issue in the sun.

  • Photos too dark in PE 7

    I've recently updated from PE4 to PE7.
Photos I've uploaded to PE7 appear too dark. When I lighten them up they appear to light (underexposed) in
other Photo programs...including my old PE4. Same happens when I send the edited photos via email to others.
I'm using Vista 2 with all updates.
    Jack Mac

    Thank you for your message.
I take most of my photos with a Canon Rebel XT but I also use a
Canon SD1100IS but the result in PE 7 is the same.
    Always JPG format.
After taking the photos I download them to a 300MB internal Hard drive.
I then open PE 7 in the Quick edit mode. Before I make any adjustments
is when the photos show up dark. The photos usually (using PE 4 for
    instance) need very little adjustment.
To lighten the dark image in PE 7 I adjust using under "Lighting" the
slider "Lighten Shadows". I adjust that until it appears about right.
    Then I save it.
Now if I email that to someone and they look at it, it's too light...like
underexposed. It's the same after I've saved it and I open it in PE 4
or another photo editing program.... it's still too light.
The computer is a Dell XPS 420 with 3 GB of ram and an Intel
Core 2 Quad 2.4GB processor. Vista SP 2 is the operating system.
I was completely happy using PE 4 but decided it was time to update.
Thank you for attempting to help.
