Safari problems on new machine

Hello. I just bought a Dual-core G5 and am having some issues with Safari (and to a lesser extent, Firefox). I have none of these problems on my G4 Powerbook, and they're both running the very latest OS updates.
Here are the issues:
1. When I log out of Hotmail, it doesn't log out completely and go back to the MSN Homepage. Instead, it gets stuck on an "almost logged out page" with two buttons at the bottom -- "Try Again" and "Done". The same thing happens in Firefox, actually -- but only on this new machine. There must be some browser setting needed to automatically get past this, but I've got cookies fully-enabled, etc. Any ideas?
2. I think that whatever setting is affecting #1 is also affecting my ability to log into FREDMIRANDA.COM. When I try to log in there, it accepts my username & password and tells me I successfully logged in. But I really haven't been logged in because when I go to read a forum that requires login, it tells me to log in again. No matter how many times I log in, however, the site doesn't recognize it.
3. Whenever I start up Safari on my new machine, which happens to have two monitors, the browser window ALMOST goes back to where I'd placed it before -- in the upper-left corner of the 2nd monitor. Why doesn't it go EXACTLY to that loction, which is where it was when the program last shut down.
If you can help me figure out what's going on and how to fix it, I'd certainly appreciate it...
Regards,
ALF

another thing you might try is (after quitting safari) opening up:
/applications/safari.app/contents/resources/english.lproj/brower.nib
in interface builder and ensuring that the browser window is positioned where you want it. save the layout. note that this will affect all users.
on the other hand, this might be a multi-monitor issue (can't help there).
hmm...this other business is peculiar. it'd probably be better to start with firefox, since it's more self-contained. are you sure all your settings are identical on both versions? running:
diff -u g4firefoxprefsfile g5firefoxprefsfle
should give you a quick overview.

  • Safari Problems Since New Version

So I'm someone who actually likes using Safari and I used to experience very few problems with it. Until recently. This started happening as soon as Apple released the new version (can't remember the version number), the one with the improved reader in the side bar (a feature that I love).
For reference: I always update my stuff, so I have the latest versions of everything that the OS will allow on both comptuers that are experiencing the problem.
One machine is my laptop, running the latest Lion (10.7.2) and the other is an iMac at work, funning the latest version of Snow Leopard. I also often run MacKeeper to clean the system cache's etc.
    1. Both computers running Safari exhibit a strage problem in which, at randome times, all the browers reset and reload. I'm trying to find out what causes this, but because it is so random, it's hard to identify the cause.
    2. My laptop, a 2008 MacBook (2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2BG RAM), often shows a spinning rainbow ball when browsing in Safari. This is happnening more frequently with the more recent update and the time it spins is longer.
    3. Flash-based site seems to have more trouble with Safari. It's not that they don't work, they just are a but slower than they used to be. This is more noticeable on my laptop, which makes me wonder if it's processor or memory issue. Though I have a hard time seeing why, as the problem was not there just a few months ago.
In contrast Firefox does not exhibit these problems, though I admit I do not like using it as much, and it has its own problems.
There may not be an answer to this. My hope is that Apple is monitoring these forums and taking note these bugs. I do not seem to be the only one having them. But, of course, if anyone has any advice, it is appreciated.
Oh, before you answer, "Buy more RAM," know that I am considering doing that, but my experience with past laptops and computers in my 15 years of using Macs is that RAM upgrades deliver almost unoticeable improvements and that answer is more often buggy software.

Yes, Bee, I clear the cache and history on a regualr basis, and I clear the cookies, too. And this was my habit when Safari was working fine for me, so it's not that.
Interesting what you say about MacKeeper. Others on this site seem to detest it, though I haven't see it cause any trouble (I don't use their anti-virus stuff or any realtime protection, though, I only use it for cleaning up duplicate files, etc.). I'll read more about it.
And I installed that way before the new versions of Safari came out and had no problems then, either, so I don't think it's the culprit.

  • Spaces and Safari: problem opening new browser windows

I have just installed 10.5 and have turned on spaces. I have put safari into its own space. When I control click on a hyperlink and select 'open in new window' from the submenu the new window does not open. I can open a new tab but new windows do not appear. The windows don't appear in any other space either.
Is this a spaces/safari conflict or a safari problem?

    Hi John,
I agree with Adam on the <cflocation> tag. I suspect it is a browser setting.
    Like in FireFox
    Tools/Options/Tabs
[X] Open new windows in a new tab
    Like in IE,ver7
    Tools/Internet Options/General Tab/Tab Section/Settings button
then bottom section "Open links from other programs in"
[X] A new tab in the current window
Try unchecking these boxes and then try your process again. Not
saying this will correct your issue, but does seem like a browser
issue to me as well and not <cflocation>

  • Random Safari Problems on New MacBook

    Hello Everyone,
I just bought a brand new MacBook. Its awesome but i am having two random problems with Safari that i thought people might be able to shed some light on.
    1) My text keeps getting bigger. Every so often i have to go to the view/make text normal size to get it back to normal. its happened randomly about three times in the last few hours.
    2) It dosent seem to happen on all message boards but when i go to www.crackberry.com message boards when i click on a topic it brings me directly to the end of the topic or the middle about post #13 or 14....wierd...
Any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks!
    -KG

    Hi Kevin,
    1) My text keeps getting bigger. Every so often i have to go to the view/make text normal size to get it back to normal. its happened randomly about three times in the last few hours.
Maybe you're accidentally performing gestures on the trackpad? Pinching in will make the text smaller, and the reverse (pinching out? ) will make the text larger.
Not sure about the second question I'm afraid. Can you post an example link where this happens to you?

another thing you might try is (after quitting safari) opening up:
    /applications/safari.app/contents/resources/english.lproj/brower.nib
in interface builder and ensuring that the browser window is positioned where you want it. save the layout. note that this will affect all users.
on the other hand, this might be a multi-monitor issue (can't help there).
hmm...this other business is peculiar. it'd probably be better to start with firefox, since it's more self-contained. are you sure all your settings are identical on both versions? running:
    diff -u g4firefoxprefsfile g5firefoxprefsfle
should give you a quick overview.

Safari problem:  when I switch back into safari from another application, the menu bar comes up but no tabs or windows.  What's going on?  Just started yesterday.  I have found a workaround: when I Command Tab back to safari, I hit command T to open a new tab and Command W to close it, and my other tabs are visible.
I have tried shutting down, closing tabs, with no success.  What's going on and how can I fix it?
    Thanks,
    Cindi B
PS:  I'm not sure of the actual OS level, but I have not allowed it to upgrade to Maverick yet; concerned about it because of a few things I've read...

A Safari extension or third party plugin may be causing the menu bar issue.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
As for which OS X is installed.
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.
    The version is noted there.
v10.6 Snow Leopard v10.7 Lion  v10.8 Mountain Lion
It's your choice whether or not to upgrade to Mavericks. If you decide to do this, make sure your Mac meets the requirements noted here.

  • CS2 Quits constantly, new machine, same old problem

    Hello.
my g5 quad was replaced by apple with a 3.0GHz MacPro and while running certain apps hard, like CS2, Adobe Camera Raw, or Adobe Bridge, they will quit unexpectedly just as they did on the defunct g5 we had.
I have tried everything, just as i did with my Quad, to repair the situation. reseating the RAM, resetting the PRAM, deleting the cache, running DU to repair permissions/repair the disk, running AHT in loop, AND starting with a fresh OS install. none of my files aside from my music and my photos are from the g5 i had. this is not an importing anomaly.
i went to the apple store and they told me that this may be because it is running in Rosetta. i also asked them why my 2 year old PC with an single core AMD Athlon64 3500 and 4 GB of PC3200 can run CS2 so much faster than the MacPro (ridiculous to watch but the PC is actually 2 times faster than the apple if set to the same task at the same time), and they said this may also be due to Rosetta and/or leopard not yet being here. i have been assured that Leopard and CS3 will fix all this. i don't know what to do. i don't want to bring the machine back again. i feel so badly because those guys have tried so hard to help us because they know it is (was) our business machine and that we bought it to speed up our work flow. unfortunately, i don't think the machine is capable of that kind of thing, and i don't trust it to do much anymore. Apple has been very kind to us, and so have their people, but the machines we have used have not been quite so kind or helpful once our troubles began.
i'm not into fighting the holiday crowds for parking and lugging a 40 pound machine around... and frankly, i would be pretty upset if i were on the apple team and saw me back at the store with the brand new machine after all the hard work they put in to help us.
i've stopped using the apple machine as i am afraid to push it hard for my business or multi-task. as a photographer, i am certain that i am not pushing it as hard as a videographer would be. but, i can't run more than CS2 and maybe a web browser (firefox 2.0 is very slow and unresponsive on this machine) without it slowing down... or crashing a program altogether and losing all my work. CS2 is what i use...
so, i've resumed work on my windows machine, and basically use the apple as a storage device/paper weight. that was a $5000+ mistake our business has made, and it's tough to recover from that in my business with one PC based machine that works and an awfully expensive apple paperweight.
NED SNOWING wrote back to me and had this to say:
"hey said this may also be due to Rosetta and/or leopard not yet being here. i have been assured that Leopard and CS3 will fix all this.
This is correct. As all PowerPC applications, like Adobe CS2, have to run through a software "translation" layer everything is slowed down for that application. This is why CS2 apllications run no better than the G5s on the Mac Pro. However, once the like of Adobe etc release their applications as Universal or Intel binary applications you'll see the performance skyrocket forward.
Due to Apple's accelerated transition the like of Adobe have in actual fact been caught a little short in their developement timings. Be aware that the use of Rosetta for applications is only temporary.
By the way, there's no reason that you could run Windows under Boot Camp on the Mac Pro in the meantime.
    Mac Pro 2.66GHz 3GB/5x300GB (see bio)/ATi X1900 XT/AE/BT ; Dell 2405FPW Mac OS X (10.4.8) MacBook Pro 15.4" C2D 2.16GHz 2GB/120GB/Glossy ; Mac mini CD 1.66GHz 2GB/80GB/SD"
    My question stands at this:
still, i do not understand why the machine is so dramatically slower than my 2 year old PC with a single core AMD64 XP3500 and 4 GB of PC3200 AND 2 near full 80GB IDE hard drives.
the Quad was ridiculously fast. it was so fast that i thought there was something worng with it. i never wanted to use my windows machine again and then it failed and failed and deleted our data and failed again...
if i am understanding you correctly, you're saying that this machine SHOULD run CS2 at a rate on par at least with the Quad... well, i invite you to show me what i am doing wrong, PLEASE. The failure of the Quad crippled our business, and now this machine has put us at a $5000+ deficit without anything to show for it. It takes me more time to use the Mac than my PC… IN CS2… and your statement is that the MacPro should run at speeds equal to or at least comparable to the g5. Mine doesn’t. and I am not at all happy about having to bring a brand new machine they replaced along with my PC to the store to demonstrate how slow their stuff is when the Quad blew this heap away AND could multitask. The Apple guys at the store have been great, and this just plain stinks to have to bring back a machine that's supposed to be working and isn't, AFTER being replaced. it's pretty damned embarrassing.
no errors in AHT, Mem test is fine. 2 500GB hard drives, primary drive has 400GB free when i am not working on a project. 250GB when i am. all my stuff is backed up on Terabyte Servers. the replacement machine they gave us had 2GB of RAM (4-512 sticks) and the Apple Store installed 2 1GB sticks as the machine we turned in was equipped as such.
    please, please, please help me.

while running certain apps hard, like CS2, Adobe Camera Raw, or Adobe Bridge, they will quit unexpectedly just as they did on the defunct g5 we had.
The I would say that you're installing some software that is problematic else you used the Migration Assistant to get your data from one to the other. Either way, I would clean install the system and install a minimum of software to ensure that the system is stable before adding to it. I find it hugely unlikely that two completely different systems to exhibit the exact same issue.
Additionally, if you have installed Adobe Version Cue 2 then that might well be your problem.
still, i do not understand why the machine is so dramatically slower than my 2 year old PC with a single core AMD64 XP3500 and 4 GB of PC3200 AND 2 near full 80GB IDE hard drives.
Have you ever had a conversation with someone with whom you did not have a common language and had to use a translator? This is the situation that Apple has with Rosetta (where Rosetta is the translator). If you take into account these mechanics you can't expect this scenario to have a conversation as quick as two people talking in a common language, even if one of the parties isn't very good at that language.
if i am understanding you correctly, you're saying that this machine SHOULD run CS2 at a rate on par at least with the Quad
No… I'm not saying that. What I said was that the Mac Pro should perform equivalently to a low end G5. I would expect a 3GHz MP to be roughly equivalent to a 2.3GHz DC PowerMac G5 in the best case. To expect more than that with Rosetta in the picture would be rather delusional.
I am not at all happy about having to bring a brand new machine they replaced along with my PC to the store to demonstrate how slow their stuff is when the Quad blew this heap away AND could multitask.
I wouldn't be best pleased about that either although I don't really know what you're expecting any of us to say. As I said earlier my best advise would be to erase the boot/application drive and then install everything new and from the original CDs/DVDs. If under the simplest setup possible you still experience crashing then I would contact Adobe or which ever software developer for the problematic application(s).
Otherwise, just return the thing, eat the restocking fee and wait until Adobe CS3 is released.

  • Startup problems--time for a new machine?

I have an imac G5 that I bought last February. In the last few weeks I've been experiencing serious startup problems. When turned on, the screen goes gray and the lines and pixels fragment and shimmer. It takes a long time to go to the main screen and often the screen isn't stable and freezes. It takes me eight to ten startups to get the system stable.
I've repaired disk permissions, repaired h-drive, reset Pram. Still a mess. My husband wants me to just get a new one and get something that is not an Apple this time. I'm resisting that.
I don't want to lose all my data and I've backed up what I can but I'm worried the data is corrupted and if I load it on to a new machine, I will experience the same problems.
Any advice? I'm not even sure if this is a hardware or software problem. I'm out of warranty so I am on my own, but I'm frustrated to be having these problems with such a new machine.
    Thanks for any advice,

Cassandra, in addition to Barbara's excellent suggestion: looking to see if you qualify for the program, please make sure that you have an external FireWire drive and clone your drive, (SuperDuper is an excellent choice for backing up, cloning and making scehduled backups).
Let us know how you made out,

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • Problem re-activating CS3 on new machine

I want to install CS3 on my new machine. Have de-activated it on old machine.
Have installed CS3 on new machine with no probs. it works just fine.
It asks me to activate software which I expected and went through procedure.
It would not activate online but directed me to phone activation.
I followed procedure and entered the serial # and the Activation #
After approx 30 seconds told could not activate the software and redirected to agent
    who redirected me to adobe.com/go/activation.
Tried direct chat with adobe service agent who suddenly told me to go to this forum.
    I am using OSX 10.8.3
Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks
    Peter

    Hi
The problem is that the phone # has only 2 options. The 1st is where you
key in the s/n and activation # when this fails you are directed to 2nd
option where you get recorded message. This tells you that activation
problems are no longer dealt with on phone and you are directed back to
website. I am going to try and find dome other phone numbers for Adobe in
    UK.

  • Moving Safari bookmarks, address book info and mail messages to new machine

I recently got a new powerbook and would like to transfer my safari bookmarks, mail messages and address book information over to the new machine. What would be the best way to do this? I'd like to keep the old information on the desktop and simply add the information to the new machine.

Yeah - but the kicker is, I don't want to transfer everything, just the safari bookmarks, the address book information and selected mail folders that are "On My Mac"

  • Problems moving a mobile user to a new machine

    Hi there,
the subject already points it out roughly.
    Situation is as follows:
I've got a OS X 10.8 server providing several services (mail, contacts, File server etc.). I have some clients attached, those are dedicated to one user with a mobile home which is synching between server and client (set via Workgroup Manager). Clients also have 10.8 or 10.9 respectively. One remark: These systems have evolved from 10.6 to their current version, especially te server was 10.6 originally.
I now want to replace one MBP with a current MBPr. Both have the same OS (10.9). I tried it with doing a 'last' sync back from the MBP to the server, and afterwards an initial sync to the new MBPr. After doing this I was able to create a mobile home on the new machine (at least I thought), but the sync was done in a second and nothing was transferred. The situation didn't change after some more tries. If I log in in an do NOT create a mobile home and start the user from the server, this comes up with all data.
Any idea how I get the data over the the new machine? Do I have to use the new "Profile Manager"? I am just curious as it is working like a charm in the "old" setup, but does not work with the new MBPR.
    Hope you can help!

Well, it seems that I at least have an idea what the reason might be. The FileSyncAgent.log on the client shows the following entries that hint to a Permission Error (see below).
Any idea which permissions are meant? I think there might be an issue with the filesystem - any idea what rights are required to allow proper synching?

I do backup with iCloud.  I can't wait until the new iMac is available so that I can once again have my files in more than 1 location without needing to rely solely on the cloud.
I also rely on iTunes and my MacBook and Time Machine as well as backing up to iCloud. I know many users know have gone totally PC free, but I chose to use iCloud merely as my third backup.
I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever.  Is that right?
In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever.

  • Safari randomly opens new windows

Safari keeps opening new browser windows on its own at random times (not startup) when I'm using the computer. It doesn't matter what I'm doing - there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. For example, I could be playing WoW and get lag spikes that have nothing to do with the server or my ISP. If I close WoW or window it to check what is going on with my desktop, I find several  blank Safari windows open (I've found up to 8 of them at a time!). It doesn't matter if I'm using the internet or not, it does it anyway. I've gotten 3 of them just during typing up this question!
I've had this problem since I got my MacBook Pro (it was originally a display model from Fry's) a few years ago. However, when I was running 10.6, I was unable to uninstall Safari and just use Firefox instead. I just upgraded to 10.8 and it won't let me uninstall it - says Mountain Lion NEEDS it.
I've done everything I can think of - it's not my default browser; it's not listed as a startup item; I've run MacScan; cleared all history and cookies. Anyone have any suggestions?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Leave the machine running overnight in safe mode. Don't launch any applications. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
