Safari quit and screen went black

Was browsing the internet, then Safari quit, then screen went black and system froze.managed to start up again, by unplugging power, but my question is why that should happen ?.
Any help?

When the screen went black and froze, was the power still on to the eMac or did it shutdown on its own? I'd first check the simple stuff: check the power cord is fully plugged in. Kind of hard to do that after unplugging the computer, I know. But check that both ends of the power cord are fully seated --- some people have noted being surprised that the power cord on the eMac end goes as deeply into the socket as it does. Is your eMac plugged into a surge protector under your desk or table and by your feet when you're using it? It's not unknown for people to bump their foot aginst a surge protector's reset button. Related to that, check all the cables attached to the eMac and make sure they're fully seated.
You may also want to run the Apple Hardware Test as a check.
