Safari quits everytime I click "show all bookmarks"

Basically, I'm using OS 10.3.9, and Safari has been updated to the latest. But, since then, it quits everytime I click on the "show all bookmarks" icon.....
I don't know why this is happening, and I don't know what to do...
HELP, PLEASE!!

Hi lost92
when you say safari 'quits' - do you mean it crashes? - or just that the window you're viewing disappears ?
If the 2nd one - that's normal behaviour. If you look at the safari icon in your Dock, you'll probably see an up-arrow below it - this shows that the Safari application is still running, even though there may be no windows open.
If you have just the one safari windows open - there's no need to click the red dot ( close window ) to go to another page. Just click on a link/bookmark to the new page you want - or type the address into the address bar at the top of the safari window. To over-write the existing address, click the icon just to the left of it - & start typing - then press enter when you're done. You can also press Apple-L ( Apple key+L key at the same time) to do the same thing.
If you find that safari has no windows open - either click the icon in the dock, or from the Safari menu, choose File-New window.
You should also read safari help regarding Tabbed browsing, since this is a very useful feature.

  • My bookmarks folder appears in the Bookmarks menu, but bookmarks do not appear when clicking "Show All Bookmarks." Bookmark Manager appears, but shows no bookmarks at all.

When opening the Bookmarks menu, I see my bookmarks folder in the dropdown and can access them from there. However, if I click "Show All Bookmarks" the manager launches, but shows no bookmarks of any kind. No defaults, folders, uncategorized links...nothing.
As such, I can still use the bookmarks while surfing, but I can't organize, delete, or export them since they don't show up in the bookmark manager.

This can be caused by a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Bookmarks do NOT open in a browser window when click "show all bookmarks"

Currently using Firefox 30.0.3 Mac OS 10.9.5. When I tried to edit my collection of bookmarks buy opening the "show all bookmarks" in the pull-down menu., nothing happened. This usually opens a new tab or window with the bookmarks displayed. I then researched HELP and tried all those solutions to no avail. Even where the help topic says a bookmarks window will open, it does not. I have no way of editing or deleting en masse outdated bookmarks. Yes I can do so individually through the bookmark button on the toolbar - what a pain in the _________s.
Is this problem intentional, or a glitch?

Cory MH - Thank you for your suggestions. The bookmarks window DOES open when Firefox is in safe mode. So I went through the troubleshooting process and nothing there helped. Extensions (there are only two) are disabled, I am using the default appearance. All plug-ins are set on "ask to activate". I should mention that this bookmark problem only just began, and never happened before the most recent updates - there were two only a day or so apart.

  • Double click Bookmarks button to open the Library window directly ("Show All Bookmarks" function)

I have a number of folders in bookmarks, and I edit it frequently by clicking "Show All Bookmarks" and opening a Library.
Previously, after clicking Bookmarks button, "Show All Bookmarks" appeared on top of the list, and now it's at the bottom.
Please, add double click function on Bookmarks button so that it opens Library window directly.

  • Bookmarks Toolbar does not appear in "Show All Bookmarks"

I keep all my bookmarks in the Bookmarks Toolbar folder. All are intact and functional. They appear to back up properly (i.e., viewing a newly-created json file with MS Notepad, I find nothing to suggest that anything is missing). BUT, I can't actually view/organize these (or any other) bookmarks in the Library. After clicking "Show All Bookmarks," the main Library pane that opens is empty. In the navigation pane at the left, there is an entry "+ All Bookmarks," suggesting there's an expandable tree there. Clicking on the "+" has no effect; no expanded tree in the Nav pane, no bookmarks in the main pane. In short, I have no way to organize my existing bookmarks, even though they are intact and functional.

    Thanks for the prompt reply.
I tried your SafeMode suggestion. There was no change in the performance of the Bookmark Library; it still opens blank and the "+ All Bookmarks" will not expand.
I skimmed through a few hundred other questions and answers and found a handful of others with what appears to be a similar problem. I'm currently looking at this:
    [[http://kb.mozillazine.org/Bookmarks_history_and_toolbar_buttons_not_working_-_Firefox|Locked or damaged places.sqlite]]
I tried the backup/restore solution. I creating a new backup, verifying that it was current by adding a new bookmark just before backing up, and then checking the json file to be sure it was there. No problem. I did a restore: all bookmarks look like they're still OK, but there was no change in the performance of the Library window.
I'll try CHKDSK next, before I attempt a full rebuild of places.sqlite.

  • Firefox crashes when I "show all bookmarks"

When I click "show all bookmarks" and then select uncategorized bookmarks, firefox locks up and eventually crashes with the Library window open.
This seems to happen every time. I'm using Firefox 5.0. I also tried in safe mode and the same result.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • When NOT using icons on the toolbar, side-bar drop-down for additional toolbar items has disappeared with Firefox 4 and accessing these items requires clicking 'Bookmarks', then 'Show all bookmarks' then 'Toolbar'--ugh, what a pain.

On older versions of Firefox, Toolbar links ran across the top of my screen, with a drop-down to the far right which would show additional Toolbar items for which there was not room on the screen.
With Firefox 4, if I'm not using icons (text only), the dedicated Toolbar drop-down is gone and I have to first click 'Bookmarks' to the right of the Toolbar ribbon, then 'Show All Bookmarks', then 'Toolbar' in order to access my additional Toolbar links. Could anyone have made it any harder?
Why doesn't someone just restore the drop-down at the far right of the Toolbar so that all of my Toolbar items (which I prefer to keep separately from the regular Bookmark items, else I would have just plain bookmarked those items in the first place) are readily accessible?

You see the orange (on Linux gray) Firefox button if the Menu Bar is hidden (View > Toolbars > Customize or right-click a toolbar).<br />
If you need to access the hidden Menu bar then press F10 or hold down the Alt key to make the Menu Bar appear temporarily.<br />
You only see the Bookmarks menu button if the Menu bar is hidden.

  • There is no "import & backup" in "show all bookmarks"

I want to import bookmarks from my safari browser.
My old firefox was corrupted from an "add on" Trusteer thing required by my on-line banking thing.
IBM says that it now has revised its TRUSTEER thing and that I can re-install it.
But now Firefox does not seem to have re-installed correctly or fully.
    What to do?

In the Bookmarks Manager (Library) there is a toolbar with the Back and Forward button and three other buttons (Organize, Views, Import & Backup).
    * The first (gear) button is the Organize button with basic edit menu items for bookmarks
    * The second button is the Views button that allows to change the sort order for viewing purposes (doesn't sort permanently).
    * The third (star) button is the Import & Backup button that allows to backup and restore a JSON backup and import and export an HTML backup and import bookmarks from other browsers.
Hover each button to see the tooltip or click each of them to see what they do.
You can find "Import Data from Another Browser" in the Bookmarks Manager (Library)

  • How do I replace bookmark bar that was lost when a new Mozilla Fox Start page suddenly appeared with a Zone Alarm Community Toolbar, and nothing I have so far tried, working with "Show all Bookmarks", works ("Unable to process the backup file).

My current version is 6.0.2. A box appeared a few days ago informing me of an update to 7 (x?). I declined for the time being.
Then a Start Page just showed up missing the bookmark tool bar. I tried to import a bar from another browser. Nothing showed up. Then, I went to "Help". First, I clicked on "About Firefox" where I was informed of an update. This time, I tried it. When I clicked on "Apply Update", I received a message; 'Update could not be installed" despite there being no other Firefox browsers running.
I went back to "Help" and clicked on "Firefox Help". A page came up with the URL in place, but the page would not load ("Cannot find server at support.mozilla.com"). After several clicks on "Try Again" with the same result, I copied the URL and pasted it into a different browser, from which I am now working.
Before sending this question, I tried the two procedures ("Manual Backup" and "Restoring From Backup") found on Bookmarks/Show All Bookmarks/Import And Backup/Restore, using both "stored backups" from Mozilla's Profile folder and "Choose a file", as well as Bookmarks/Show ... /Backup. In each case, the response was, "Unable to process the backup file".
I had previously tried another method I found on Google which involved copying and saving a Mozilla backup file (this is the file I used in the procedure above - "Choose a File") found in the C:/Documents And Settings/.../Profile Folder, then renaming the original file "backup.HTML" and saving it in a folder one level up from its original location. The Bookmark bar was to show up after shutting down and reopening Mozilla - it never happened. I replaced the original backup file.
It occurred to me to locate the Bookmark File for this browser (Chrome) and using it in the "Choose a File" method, referred to above. But there is no extension included in the file name, and I was afraid to try it.
I'm out of ideas. Is there something else to try?

Check that the Bookmarks Toolbar is visible and that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is still placed on the Bookmarks Toolbar.
If the menu bar is hidden then press F10 or hold down the Alt key, that should make the "Menu Bar" appear.
Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"
    * Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout" (Linux, Windows)
    * Check that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If you do not see the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" or other items that are missing in the toolbar palette or on a toolbar then click the "Restore Default Set" button

Firefox now always stores the old session which you can access by going to the History menu and selecting "Restore Previous Session". There is also an option to restore the previous session on the default about:home home page.
If you always open the last set of tabs, an alternative approach is this:
    # Click the orange Firefox button, then select options to open the options window
    # Go to the General panel
    # Change the setting "When Firefox starts" to "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

Do you have all your bookmarks in the sidebar (Ctrl+B), if you do there is nothing wrong with your places.sqlite as far as bookmarks go, next check to see if you have history in the sidebar (Ctrl+H)
And before you consider deleting or renaming your places.sqlite
If you are using an external monitor with a laptop try moving the library window back to the laptop. Try searching on just a colon ":" in the bookmarks Library List.

Try in Firefox Safe Mode to make sure extensions are not part of the problem.
May fix problem -- not likely but you have a lot to lose if you lose data from places.sqlite so worth the trouble to try first.

  • I don't see "Show all Bookmarks" when I attempt to organize my bookmarks.

The first step to organizing bookmarks is: Click the Bookmarks button and select Show All Bookmarks to open the Library window. I don't see "Show all Bookmarks" when I attempt to organize my bookmarks. My desired end result would be folders followed by individual bookmarks.

    @Cuddlebug27
You clearly won't be able to import from something that no longer exists.
Do you perhaps have two computers? If you had Chrome on both and signed in to synchronize them at some point, then you could get your info over from the second device. Otherwise you really can't import from a browser that isn't there.
Also if you usually ran Chrome signed in with an email account, you could try downloading it again and see if your info comes back when you '''Sign in to Chrome''' with that account.
