Safari ram

hi to everyone.
Is it possible, that safari drains my 4gb memory within not even half hour of use..?
i sometimes leave my iMac on at night...and hear it all night...hard disk working?for what?
like is backing up a terabyte of stuff!
I just leave skype on, and safari with 3-4tabs open..and the next morning to wake him up..
sometimes i have to restart!
I've installed "flush Memory"that brings my ram back to zero..but still don't help that much!
Any suggestions?
thanks in advance..!

.and hear it all night...hard disk working?for what?

  • Safari ram usage always swells and swells

After upgrading to 2gb of ram I started to keep the activity monitor on and couldnt help notice that safari when fresh is like 30mb or so then as it gets used it swells and swells to 300+mb it never gives ram back? Even if I close tabs or switch to just plain google with a plain page....
Is this normal? I would think it would give back the ram as I close pages, etc...
This sure would explain why when I left the machine on with Safari running it seemed to get slower , hence the upgrade to more ram.....
If your at 1gb and never shut your machine down and never close Safari it will swell to a large size so you better quit Safari and then reload it just to get the free ram back.
I have a G5 w/4gb before so I never paid much attention but I'm gonna check it just to see if it behaves like that....

...or alternatively run another browser like Firefox or Camino

  • Safari - RAM Memory Leak?

I have a Macbook Pro Retina with 16GB of RAM.
When I browse the web in Safari and have around 6 tabs open, I see my RAM memory meter going down (I'm using this app called memory clean).
After a while everything goes extremely slow.
What can I do about this?
Thank you for your time and your help!

I would first try un-installing the third party app.
OSX 10.9 is doing a good job of managing memory, best results are to not try and micromanage memory usage.
You can use the activity monitor for a overview.

  • Safari Consuming All CPU Power

I just recently noticed that Safari seems to be taking a lot more processing power while browsing.
When I click on a link, the fans start spinning faster, the little colored wheel cursor appears and I can see in Activity Monitor that the CPU usage for Safari goes to 100%.
This happens every time I click on a link. It even happens if I hit the back button. It happened while I was typing in the post, since My Yahoo web page automatically refreshed on another tab.
As you can see, I have a dual Power Mac G5 2.5 GHz with 4.5 MBytes of memory.
This just started happening yesterday. I've never seen this before. From my previous PC days, I would say that I picked up a virus or some kind of Spyware.

Over the last several weeks, I too have been noticing Safari taking up more system resources than it had in the past. I upgraded to Tiger the day it came out (from 10.2) and only began noticing this problem in early August. Not only have I seen an increase in CPU usage when running Safari, but I've also seen an increase over time of RAM usage. When I restart, RAM usage is under 30% with iCal, Address Book, iTunes, Mail, NetNewsWire, and a weather app running. Later that day after having browsed and done many other actions with only those basic apps running, RAM usage stays at or slightly above 50%. It often pegs out at 65% and again after restarting and re-opening those apps back up with the exception of Safari, RAM usage remains far below 50%. With my meager 800mhz processor, and all the memory leaking and CPU hogging going on, the fan is running much more frequently than it should.

  • Safari is using all my free Ram and resources

Ever since Safari 5.1 and the emergance of "Safari Web Content" safari now takes sometimes up to 2GB of Ram! Thats more than every other program running combined! I am then left with ~10-50 mb of ram to share with Dreamweaver Photoshop and several other programs.
Once it bogs down all my resources it will require me to reload all my pages before I can use any of my pages. Once it returns its still using just about as much resources.
-First of all it is not my extenstions or plug-ins, (I never had any till just recently)
-I am running safari on just a few windows on several desktops.
-I almost never experience this amount of ram usage before 5.1
I have seen others experience this and the only viable solution seems to be "just close down safari and open it back up"
I am developing for the web and keep several pages open on multiple desktops for different reasons, when I close down Safari all my windows from all my other desktops (at least now safari saves my old windows) and opens them all on one desktop and taking sometimes nearly a minute to do so.
It has been two versions now since 5.1 (5.1.1, 5.1.2) and little has been done in regards to (in my opinion) this very serious issue. (there might have been slight decreases in ram usage but if so I dont really notice it)
What can I do (or what is being done) to limit the amount of Ram consumption Safari is allowed to take (adobe programs have this option)

I have the same issue. I see that no one has added to this since March. Does that mean it was address somewhere else? I understand the app is designed to use as much memory as it can grab to make it run better, but when it grabs so much that you start virtual memory thrashing, that's a problem. I have a Mac Mini with 2GB that was barely functional when Safari was running. I just upgraded to 8GB, and it's much better, but Safari still gladly takes half of that memory. I don't see how clearing the cache or history would have anything to do with RAM utilization. I agree this is a real problem.

  • Safari hangs: not enough program memory, while 90G HD and 4G ram, OS re-installed, removed files etc. (mac book pro, leopard)

Safari hangs direct after starting up. Rainbow bol rotates around one hour after which a message is shown: "not enough program memory"
More than 90G free on HD, even removed more files and installed OS and programs again. Nothing helps.
    Help

SIG, thanks for your reaction. After reading my question again I understand it was not clear.
The reason I mentioned the 90G free HD space was the information I found on internet about my problem in which it was assumed there was not enough RAM memory and the processor uses the HD for SWAP files?
In any way my problem is still there and I like to add some information:
    MACBookPro OSX 10.6.7, 2.4 GHz duo, 4GB DDR3 RAM, L2 cache 3MB, 250 GB HD (90 GB free).
What I have done untill now:
    Re-install OSX plus programs
Reboot in safe mode (cold start with shift C pressed)
A number of reports generated after a forced Safari stop were send to Apple. (by the way what are they doing with these? besides not helping me?).
Just today I learned where to find the Safari cache file's which I will empty when I am back from work tonight.
I hope, with this additional information you have some more suggestions. In any way I will come back with the result of emptying the Safari cache.

  • Safari using up all the RAM

if I leave Safari open for an hour just regularly browsing sites, Safari and its other process Safari Web Content will use up all the available RAM on my computer. I have 4GB total, and eventually Safari will use up all the rest, usually 1-2GB. Any idea what's going on here? I have adblockers, such as Glimmerblocker, and extensions in Safari but they didn't affect Safari this much before 5.1/Lion.

Using Lion on 17" MacBook Pro -
I don't know about MDS - don't know what it is - but after seeing available HD space disappear gradually down to nothing when using computer - I tried all sorts of disk cleaning utilities - and have found that ---- AT THE LEAST --- gian swapfiles are engulfing the var/vm folder, taking up that HD space.
I read elsewhere that this is a Safari memory management problem.
Is it also MDS, whatever that is?
    Is there a solution?
Sometimes restarting or doing shutdown and restart helps.
Sometimes the same HD space remains disappeared.

  • Safari 7.0 osx version save caches in the ram?

I can find the caches directory: pwd/Users/wh/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
But I also found that not all caches are saved here, because it's size doesn't grow along with the video playing by using safari.
Safari 7.0 osx version save caches in the ram. Is it right?

    Yes.
If you have problems with Safari, you can delete the Cache.db anytime to see if that helps.
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

  • Safari, Photoshop, others crash after upping ram to 1GB. A mystery. HELP...

Has anyone heard of this problem: I've upgraded my 256mb ram to the max 1gb using two 512mb cards and have been having random crashes of Safari, Photoshop, Limewire and other larger programs. This has never happened before on this computer! The program just disappears and I get a error message that the program quit and asks if I want to send a notice to Apple or restart the program. It seems to be random and hard to reproduce. I even had the first two 512mb ram cards taken out and two different ones put in and the problem is still there.
The person who is a Powerbook expert who put the cards in has never seen this problem before and can't seem to figure it out either.
Please help me with this. Maybe the 500mhz G3 Powerbook Pismo can't handle 1GB? We're really stumped on this one. I really need some help. Thanks.
    Steve
PS: I'm typing fast because I'm afraid that before I get to the end of this message Safari is going to myseriously quit!
    Powerbook G3 (Pismo)

    Cornelius and JPL,
Thanks for your help but I just can't figure it out. Maybe the Pismo 500 really can't handle the extra memory. But somehow that doesn't seem right. I tried all the fixes and looked at the websites, Dr. Smoke etc., that were suggested but nothing helped.
I can't figure out how to read the ram card to make sure it is the exactly right kind but I got it from a reliable dealer who only deals with Powerbooks. The sticker on the chip reads:
    Samsung
    KOREA 0215
    PC133S - 333 - 542
    M464S6453CKS - L7A
And printed on the chip it says:
    SAMSUNG 214
    K4S510832C-KL75
    Whatever.
I brought the cards back to the dealer once already and got new ones and had the same problem with aps quitting.
I tried running the disk permissions program, removed bad fonts, completely zero'd my machine and put os 10.3 back on to see if maybe it was 10.4 that it wouldn't work with. I ran the Apple Hardware test. No luck!
I then tried one old 128mb card in the bottom and one of the new 512mb cards on top and same problem.
Finally tonight I just left in the one original 128mb card and there is no problem at all!
So I guess it's the ram cards, right?
But the question remains: Why is it quitting aps with 1GB memory installed?
Oh well, I'll check and see if the cards are maybe not exactly the right ones but I think the fellow I'm working with knows his stuff. He's been really good about helping me so the next step, he said, was to take back the second set of 512mb cards and get actual "Apple cards" (whatever that means) and see if they work. Does that sound good?
Thanks for your help and if you have any additional comments I would love to hear 'em.

  • How to play Netflix on my Imac G5, it has Safari and Firefox 3, and over 1gb Ram and Mac OS X 10.4.11

How to play Netflix on my Imac G5, it has Safari and Firefox 3, and over 1gb Ram and Mac OS X 10.4.11

You referenced that you had a iMac G5 model?
G5's are PowerPC CPUs and not Intel CPUs.
The Microsoft Silverlight software works with Intel chip Macs only.
And, if I am not mistaken, the software requires OS X 10.5.8 Leopard or greater to install.
So, you need both an Intel Mac with, at least, OS X 10.5.8 as minimum requirements.
Netflix will still not work on your Mac.
    FYI.

  • IMac from 2009, 4 GB RAM. System shuts down when I use safari or make much moves on the trackpath.

I've got an iMac from 2009, 4 GB RAM. System shuts down when I use safari or make much moves on the trackpath. Use Mavericks, installed Mavericks again on clean system. Problem still exist. What now?

The 2009 iMaccan take 8 GB ram, while it should run ok with 4 it might be a rather inexpensive test to put in 8 and see if that clears up the problems.  Mavericks is going to use almost 2 GB itself so, unless you are opening a lot of applications, you should get by with 4 GB.  But I would go for 8 and see how it does.

  • Safari Takes Up 2.5GB of RAM?

Hey guys, I just recently converted to Macs. I bought a 21.5" iMac last wednesday with the upgraded hard drive and graphics card. This thing is a beast. Quite a step up from my four year old HP Pavilion notebook with Windows XP (which is still working for me, but I'll tell you, McAfee Antivirus is so terrible that it practically IS a virus itself...). I've been reading up on Macs a LOT this past week, on the internet and from a book I purchased with the machine. I seem to be finding all the answers to my questions, however, there is one thing I really can't seem to figure out yet. When I try to run this game that uses Java as a platform (Runescape), at first I will note that upon loading this game and just playing for a minute or two, Safari will use about 550-650MB of RAM (which is quite a lot still from what I hear, for Safari, but then again I play on high-detail mode and my old laptop that had 1GB of RAM and a 2.0GHz processor could barely handle this, so 650MB of RAM usage is believable for me). But the bizarre thing is that after a half hour or so, Safari will be taking up 1.5 GB of RAM, and after even more time it will cap at about 2.5 GB of RAM (or at least this is the highest I've seen it go.) The RAM does NOT go to inactive RAM, which is where I would expect it to go at all, but it is indeed active RAM according to my activity monitor application. My computer does not freeze up at all when it does this, neither does the processor bog down (it stays at around 45% inactive throughout). But I'm just wondering...2.5GB of RAM? Seriously? What makes it start so low and go so high? I tried to find an explicit answer for this via google searches but the only thing I could find was that some people were stating Safari has a "memory leak," or whatnot and that hopefully Apple would address this issue in a near-future update. I'm not complaining here, this really doesn't affect my overall experience with the machine since I don't run other memory heavy applications with Safari, but I'm really curious as to why this happens. Does it happen to anyone else out there? Any thoughts at all?
Oh, and I don't open a million other tabs, in case some of you are thinking this might explain it.

Caramby, you are running LP7, no? Juca is asking about Logic Studio.
Juca, your system exceeds the minimum requirements for the program, but you might have some trouble running projects with a lot of tracks/instruments. Post your question in the Logic 8 forum, I'm sure you can find someone with a similar system who can report how smoothly LP8 runs on it.

  • Why is Safari Using up All My RAM?

I've read, and posted various topics related to this issue, and have not yet seen any answers to this.
Some say "why is this a problem"? Well, this is a problem if all I'm basically running is Safari, Mail, & maybe iTunes, and the Activity Monitor shows:
Safari - using 662.30 MB of "Real RAM", & (really) 24.62GB of Virtual Memory (& it's gone as high as 135 GB) which is ABSURD!
Plus, even though I'm using 1.09GB of "Active memory", & 680.14MB is "Inactive", they are added, to show 1.96 GB of Used memory, leaving me a whole 35.86 MB of memory left!
Thus, I get big slowdowns, some programs won't even work, etc.... I empty the cache constantly, use flash only on the windows I'm choosing to activate flash for, thus it forces me to close Safari, or use Firefox if I need to use any other programs! This is very frustrating, and would love to hear if anyone has either a fix for this, or at least a rational explanation as to why Safari is using up nearly all of my available memory. (it would be nice if my iMac could hold more than 2GBs)...

    HI,
If an application freezes or crashes, and you need to Force Quit, use the Activity Monitor.
Safari VM on my iMac runs about 146MB. Are you absolutely certain it says: 135GB and not MB?
Just emptying the Safari cache isn't the only maintenance available.
    Troubleshoot third-party plug-ins
If you're using the latest versions of any third-party plug-ins yet Safari still unexpectedly quits, try disabling plug-ins:
    Open Safari.
From the Safari menu, choose Preferences.
    Click Security.
    Deselect "Enable plug-ins".
Use Safari for a while until you are reasonably certain it is no longer unexpectly quitting
    Go to:
    /Library/InputManagers
    ~/Library/InputManagers
If there are any files in the Input Managers folders, move them to the Trash.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
It's always possible there's an underlying issue.. perhpaps a problem with the Mac OS X itself.
Go here for help Maintaining Mac OS X

  • Safari 5 uses up all my RAM

    Safari 5
    G5 iMac 1.9GHz, 2.5GB RAM
    Leopard 10.5.8
Safari loads using 287MB of RAM (on account of the number of open tabs). Gradually over the next hour or few, it increases to the point where it's used all my dynamic RAM, the machine starts doing swap outs and page outs and slows down really badly. I have to quit Safari and relaunch.
What's going on? I'm at the point where much as I like Safari, I'm going to abandon it for a slower, uglier, less greedy browser.

Locate the plug-in. Plug-ins are usually installed in one of these folders:
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/(To find this folder, open the hard disk icon, and then open the Library folder.)
~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/(This folder is in your home folder (represented by the tilde ~). To find it, open the hard disk icon, open your home folder, and then open the Library folder.)
I can't see Glims in either (my own folder is empty, and in the top level folder, the only two items can't I identify are npdivx.xpt andnsIQTScriptablePlugin.xpt. The second of those is vaguely the right date as to when I might have installed Glims but I'm not certain of it.)
Remove any plug-ins you’ve added. You may need to enter the account name and password for an administrator account on your computer.
I would be very reluctant to remove all plug-ins - many of these are old, essential, and long predate this problem (Flip4Mac, RealPlayer, Flash, DivX etc). I'd be lost without them and they were never a problem before. Glims is the only one I'd want to uninstall if I could only identify it.
IMPORTANT:Removing a plug-in might prevent Safari from doing certain tasks, such as playing movies.
    Quite!
