Safari Redirects & Update / Install / Reinstall Issue

Hello All - I know this topic has been discussed in another thread - but evidently people are still having problems and it has not been solved (granted the question is answered - but not SOLVED). I am having an issue - I get redirects at random and I also have the issue that everyone else seems to be having with a reinstall and the error message of needing 10.5.3 (or whatever version - I got tired of keeping it straight) but it is the same issue.
Can we get this straight - or do we all need to go to Firefox?

Hi Laura
The problem lies in the 1.2 reinstall, which may have altered some of the core OS X files, hence the error message about "localized string not found". I came across this very same problem when attempting to help someone reinstall Safari 1.3.2. That thread is found here. The resolution in that thread was easy because the original poster had Safari Panther installed on a second machine. I'm posting this reference so you'll get a sense why you can't install 1.3+
There are a number of ways to approach this problem, however, the easiest path may be to reinstall the operating system, using Archive & Install.
Do you live near an Apple store? If you do, someone at the Genius Bar can help you with the reinstall process.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean reinstall.
Install the new version that you have downloaded.

  • Safari 5.1.3 Reinstall After 10.7.3 Update

So I downloaded and installed the new 10.7.3 software update which also included the new Safari browser. Everything appeared to go smoothly but when I opened Safari I was unable to go to any web pages. I reset Safari, cleared cache etc. NO LUCK! So I downloaded Firefox 10.0 for Mac on PC then installed it on to my Macbook Air and it worked fine. So I decided to use my AppCleaner to uninstall Safari and THOUGHT I could just use Software Update to reinstall Safari but NO! Eveidently I have completely deleted Safari and when I re ran the software update manually it didn't seem to reinstall Safari at all! When I click on Safari on my dock I just get the question mark over the icon. All I want to do is reinstall my Safari without having to restore my system. Everything else is fine! I hope someone has a simple solution. I'm still not even sure why Safari wasn't working in the first place after the update.

. . . an Apple advisor and he confirm the Safari 5.1.3 problem.. They don't know the estimate before the new update.  Could take days or weeks!
That's just not true.  If it were, none of ours would work either.  I haven't had a minute's problems with Safari, or OS 10.7.3.
Did either one of you reapply the 10.7.3 COMBO update here?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1484
And repair permissions afterward, just in case.
Go to the Hard Drive icon, upper right of your screen.  Double click, go down to Applications folder. In there, find the Utilities folder.  Open Disk Utilities, select your HD icon on the left hand side of that pane, and then select “Repair Permissions.”

  • How do I get the updates that refernce "Install this update to resolve issues in Windows." installed automatically?

On Intune, I'm not certain what to tick off that will install the updates on Windows 7 that reference at the beginning of it's description line... "Install this update to resolve issues in Windows."  The only way that I can get this to prompt
for install is to manually run Microsoft Update.  Equally odd is that when you run MU locally, these updates are detected and referenced as optional -- for example, 17 optional updates are available.  But when you click on that link to review
these available updates, in the right pane detail for each update they are referenced as recommended.

Yes, I know this is an old post, but I’m trying to clean them up. Did you solve this problem, if so what was the solution?

    1. Close all inactive apps in the Task Bar. Double-click the Home button and hold apps down for a second or two and tap the minus sign to close app.
    2. Try a reset. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple Logo

  • Why is safari redirecting to Yahoo Guesthouse

I have a iPhone 5. When I go to Safari to search something it automatically redirects my phone to Yahoo Guesthouse. I have never used Yahoo Guesthouse and have no clue what it is. How do I get my phone to stop doing this!
    Thank you

    Open Terminal and type
    pico /etc/hosts
and press enter, if you see something like this your fine
Use the arrow keys to mouse down and if there is anything below what you see on the image above (below the last two "localhost" lines) you have been compromised. Delete those lines and Exit, it will ask to save which you will need to enter the admin password.
    If that doesnt' work use
    sudo pico /etc/hosts
and perform the same operation, if your in standard user, switch to admin user first as sudo won't work in standard user by default.
Once you've done that use Software Update, it fixes a fake certificate issue.
You should backup your user file folders (Music, Library, Documents etc) to a external drive (not TimeMachine) and hold Command R and boot into the Lion Recovery Partition and install Lion on top of your installed version then Software Update.
Reinstalling Lion without erasing the OS x partition just replaces Lion and Apple's bundled programs, not your third party programs or files (but you backup anyway just in case you have too)
If one of your third party programs is a trojan, you really should replace all with fresh copies.
Also use Firefox with NoScript, Ad Block Plus and Web of Trust (WOT) as these will help protect yur machine and you from being compromised.

  • MacBook Pro screen flickers and freezes after Snow Leopard/Safari 5 updates

    Hi guys,
I have a silver 120GB 15-inch MacBook Pro from Summer 2007 with 3GB RAM and 25+GB free space which has recently begun to freeze irrecoverably. The first appearance of these symptoms seems to coincide with my installing the Snow Leopard 10.6.6 update via Software Update.
I'm not particularly well versed in computer technology, but will try to describe my problem as detailedly as possible.
    What happens is this:
    1. I start the computer as per usual, with only a couple of startup items. Everything's fine.
    2. I start working. Use a lot of Safari 5 for browsing websites, often with some kind of Flash or "Flash-type" content such as banner ads, videos, even full Flash designs. I may also have programs such as QuickTime, VLC or an image editor open, if not necessarily "actively" doing anything. Everything's still fine - I'm able to both browse websites and watch videos as usual.
    3. After a while of active working - say, 1-3 hours - I notice browsing websites gets a little choppy. Display features such as the file list view in Finder may or may not appear properly. The rotating wait cursor may or may not appear from time to time.
    4. Immediately after symptom no. 3, the next time I start to watch a video, either via Safari 5 (say for example something on DailyMotion.com) or a file via QuickTime, something goes wrong.
Following no. 4, one of three things invariably happen:
5a) The video freezes and the entire screen flickers from black to the screen view very quickly two or three times, after which the computer or screen appears to freeze. The cursor still moves, but nothing reacts to it - open windows become completely unresponsive, nor does the top or any other menu react in any way to clicking. The "menu row" of application items, which normally appears when I move the cursor to the very bottom of the screen, doesn't appear. Restarting "blindly" by pressing the Off-button once and pressing R doesn't work. I'm forced to do a hard reboot, after which the computer is once again fine until the next two hours of active working. This usually happens ONLY when I try to watch a video in Full Screen-mode.
5b) I notice the video freezing only just in time, and am able to pause it and "esc" out of Full Screen-mode, and the computer remains operational. However, as soon as I again try to play video in Full Screen-mode, everything described in 5a. happens.
5c) The video stops playing, and the screen reverts momentarily to pale blue before switching to the login screen. I login again with my details, and everything appears to be fine again until the next two hours of active working. The computer "starts up" a lot faster than with a hard reboot. This usually happens ONLY when I've tried to watch a video in its original size, i.e. when not in Full Screen-mode.
This happens 1-4 times a day, and it appears to depend directly on how much work I've been doing on the computer. The less I use it in the course of a day, the longer it takes until the next time it freezes.
So, in a way, I'm able to replicate this problem. 95% of the time the screen has frozen while watching or starting to watch (usually already when starting to watch) video footage, but it has also frozen a couple of times just switching between e.g. Safari 5 and an image editor or browsing a website with a Flash banner ad or embedded video content (which however hasn't necessarily been playing); today, the screen froze when I tried to open a website made entirely with Flash.
Although it could be just a coincidence, I believe this issue first appeared when I updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.6 via Software Update alongside some other pending updates, including as far as I recall one for Safari 5. The update process appeared to have gone well at the time, though, and was not interrupted in any way. I have never had this specific problem with the computer/screen before, though.
I've read a couple of threads here regarding very similar issues with newer MBP models than mine, in which it has been suggested that the fault may lie in a malfunctioning NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. Now I've had that replaced already once because my screen went unexpectedly completely blank after a forced reboot 1-2 years ago (I don't remember exactly), but according to my System Profiler info the card still a GeForce 8600M GT. Can it be failing again?
I've also had some kind of a RAM card failure once. As far as I understood it, one of the RAM cards had fried and was preventing the computer from starting up. I replaced the bad 1GB card with a new 2GB one and the problem was resolved. Before the computer died, there were also other symptoms, but they were not similar to these.
I'm also doing the Apple Hardware Test tomorrow. Any other suggestions, though, than the graphics card?
*Could this have to do with Flash or Safari 5?* Just hear me out. Even though my computer has frozen from watching a video in just QuickTime, Safari 5 has always been open in the background at the same time, and more likely than not with websites with "Flash" content open. And come to think of it, before I performed the Snow Leopard and Safari 5 updates, I used to have daily problems viewing Flash video in Safari 5, the video content either suddenly showing up as "Plug-in Failure" or crashing the browser; I've had both Safari 5 and the Safari 5 Flash plug-in "quit unexpectedly" countless times in the past, almost daily. Sometimes the "Plug-in Failure" could be fixed just by refreshing the browser view; at other times, Safari 5 would stop showing Flash content altogether - Flash banner ads (such as Google ads), YouTube and other Flash videos, everything - until I quit and restarted Safari 5. BUT - since the day I updated everything via Software Update, I don't remember this happening; it never gets to "Plug-in Failure" now. Could it be worth trying to use e.g. just Firefox for a while or is there something (e.g. Adobe Flash) that I could try reinstall? Or am I just clutching at straws here?
Thanks for reading this long, long post!

Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, it may be worth making an appointment at the genius bar and having them run the test for the NVIDIA problem. Since your replacement logic board still has the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 M GT video chip, it could be starting to happen to your replacement logic board.
I also agree with all of CMCSK's suggestions. Freezing is often associated with hard drive problems. You might also want to run SMART Utility:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It will give you a very comprehensive view of the physical health of your hard drive. If you still have the original one from 2007, it's getting pretty long in the tooth and may be approaching the end of its average useful life of 3-5 years. I just recently had to replace my original 2007 Fujitsu drive.
If your drive is headed south, and is also too small, it may be time to upgrade to a larger and faster drive.
The software update probably didn't cause the problems, but it may have exposed problems that were already in existence.
    Good luck!

  • Safari, Software Update Crash immediately after opening

    Hi all-
Brand new 2 x 3 GHz Quad Core Mac Pro, 16GB RAM. Trying to install all software needed. Installed Final Cut Suite, it needed to update to a newer version to open up my projects. Used Software Update, and it said there was and update for Safari, so that got downloaded as well. However, now Safari crashes whenever I open it. In fact, software update crashes in the same manner.
I've already repaired permissions, removed preference files, booted from the Leopard disk and repaired the boot drive. I'm coming from the PC world, so I'm at a loss on how to fix this. Is there some way I can "roll back" my version of Safari?
Firefox runs without issue. In fact, that's what I'm working on now.
I am using a Proxy server. Here is the crash report.
    ANY help is appreciated.

    Hi Carl,
For the sake of your sanity, do not install the Security Update (it is optional). No problem installing the 10.5.1 Update, as it was released about a month prior to the update, so it is not included in the 10.5.1 update. If you can't access 10.5.1 via Software update, you can access it here.
I would think this proxy crash issue along with a number of others are addressed in the coming 10.5.2 update. You can send the error report to Apple (using Firefox if necessary) via this page. Apple doesn't usually respond to these reports, however, the information can prove useful for Software Engineers working on OS X issues.
One other piece - it's not as simple as "rolling back Safari" as the Security Update affected OS X files. Hence, the need to reinstall 10.5, then upgrade to 10.5.1.

  • Safari & Software Update Crash...

i don't know if the two are related... the crashing of Safari & Software Updater.
Safari crashes everytime it opens on my website that has an animated gif. It never did this before. i have had to change my start page so that Safari doesn't automatically crash every time it opens.
Software update has not worked in over two weeks... it get half way through, hangs, and then crashes. Is anyone else experiencing this?
i have had a long standing issue with the screensaver... which has yet to be answered as well. Even though i have it set to NEVER come on, the settings are ignored, and it comes on anyway. This has been the behavior of the OS since Jaguar. i am now using Tiger.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    thank you.

  • Safari 3.1 installed on 10.3.9, caused problems and proposed solution

    Dear all,
I accidentally installed Safari 3.1 on my G4 10.3.9. Somehow I was confused and thought that it would run on my OS.
    Wrong.
    *Problems caused:*
Various programme's did not run, like, of course, Safari, Mail, Skype, Software Update. Other people have similar problems with different programme's.
    Solution:
    1) Download Pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/
    2) Download the Safari.pkg 1.2 and 1.3.1 versions
    3) Run Pacifist: first install 1.2 followed by 'repair disk permissions' in disk utility
    4) restart
    5) run Pacifist, install via Pacifist safari.pkg 1.3.1.
    *Now the follwing is IMPORTANT*
    6) After installing Safari.pkg 1.2 I got the message that 1.3.1 was already installed which was NOT the case since I checked [APPLE-key]-'I' Safari and it said 1.2. I guess, but I am not a specialist, that this has caused the problem. Old files cause 'erratic' behavior.
Pacifist asks if you want to replace the Safari 1.3.1 files which are already in place. At this point you should enter 'YES'. It will install the correct 1.3.1 files.
    7) after this, restart the computer, repeat the 'repair disk permissions' procedure in disk utility.
In my case it worked and all other programme's work again.
Caution: I lost my bookmarks but this has happened because I deleted the safari library files as suggested in different threads. I did not keep them in a safe place... Mail is working again, no lost data!
I hope it will work for you.
    All the best,
    Thom

    Hi Thom
I shall try this but should I remove safari 3.1 first? I don't mind losing bookmarks - it's mail I want back most. I spoke to Apple support today and they suggested removing safari 3.1 and reinstalling the old safari which is what I guess this is but via Pacifist? Other than that they said it was archive and reinstall which I don't particularly want to try. The tech guy said he would post this as an issue to Apple.
    regards
    Christine

  • Itunes stops working after update install

Anyone have the issue where itunes stops working post the latest update install? Ive even uninstalled itunes and attempted to reinstall and it doesnt work

    Hey Rockettman23,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with iTunes for Windows. I also understand that you have already attempted to reinstall iTunes. You can use the steps in this resource to further isolate the issue to user-specific or system-wide:

  • Security Update Install Error

Help!!! Software Update keeps telling me that I need to load Security Update 2009-005 (Intel) ver. 1.0, but every time I try to install it I get all the way to the end and this message pops up:
The update "Security Update 2009-005 (Intel)" can't be installed" Sorry, an unexpected error occurred. The Installer package has been moved to the trash. To try again, open the package from the Finder.
I have tried about 20 times and get the same result every time! I cannot go to the iTunes store in iTunes because it says I need version 4.0.5 of Safari, but I cannot load that Safari version because it says I need the latest security update.
Can someone please help me and tell me how to get my stupid security update installed? Thanks, in advance.

    Updating
Certain steps appear to minimize the risk of an update producing problems.
Number one is to make sure you have a bootable clone backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again. This is the only guaranteed way of not having to worry about the results of an update.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility. You can verify a drive while booted from the same drive but sometimes this produces spurious errors. Repairing a drive (if necessary) has to be done while booted from another disk.

    [Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751]
You can also go to the step of booting into safe mode to do the install.

[Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
    Repair permissions again afterward.
It helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
The more cautious even like to unplug third party peripherals (see [comment by BDaqua|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9040746#9040746]).
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned (e.g., [Permissons repair|http://www.macworld.com/article/52220-3/2006/08/repairpermissions.html] as to necessity. Probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe?

  • JRE 6 Update 31 upgrade issue

    Hello,
My company uses a database application which is dependent on Java to run Stored Procedures and like from the Database Server. However, when our customers install Java 6 Update 31, the RT.jar file is removed after the restart at the end. When I test all other Java installers they create an RTA#####.pack file, which when restarted, will then become the new RT.jar. Update 31 does not seem to do this. I have taken a video to show this particular problem in its fullest. The starting scenario is Windows 7 32bit with Java 6 Update 26. Our software is installed and working with no issues. (Our Support dept says this is only happening for Windows 7 clients, but this is unconfirmed yet)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pw2093c2Ro
In order to correct this we either have to:
    1. At the time of Install, copy the updated RT.jar and restore it after reboot.
    2. Uninstall and Reinstall java.
    3. Stop our Database Service, perform the update, Start our Database service.
*This only happens when our database service (cTree Ace Server) is running at the time of installation.  This only happens with Update 31.  All prior Java updates install without error or interruption of Database Service.
Is there an open known ticket for this?
I found the following article which describes this issue perfectly, but it shows resolved since Update 10.

I am experiencing the same issue with all versions of the Java updater. Well, actually I only tested the updaters after .25. But the issue exists with them as well. Run the Java updater which says a reboot is required. After the reboot some of the Java files are missing and Java does not work. Have to uninstall Java and reinstall.
